Apache Hive - Single Insert Date Value - hadoop

I'm trying to insert a date into a date column using Hive. So far, here's what i've tried
INSERT INTO table1 (EmpNo, DOB)
VALUES ('Clerk#0008000', cast(substring(from_unixtime(unix_timestamp(cast('2016-01-01' as string), 'yyyy-MM-dd')),1,10) as date));
AND
INSERT INTO table table1 values('Clerk#0008000', cast(substring(from_unixtime(unix_timestamp(cast('2016-01-01' as string), 'yyyy-MM-dd')),1,10) as date));
AND
INSERT INTO table1 SELECT
'Clerk#0008000', cast(substring(from_unixtime(unix_timestamp(cast('2016-01-01' as string), 'yyyy-MM-dd')),1,10) as date);
But i still get
FAILED: SemanticException [Error 10293]: Unable to create temp file for insert values Expression of type TOK_FUNCTION not supported in insert/values
OR
FAILED: ParseException line 2:186 Failed to recognize predicate '<EOF>'. Failed rule: 'regularBody' in statement
Hive ACID has been enabled on the ORC based table and simple inserts without dates are working.
I think i'm missing something really simple. But can't put my finger on it.

Ok. I found it. I feel like a doofus now.
It was as simple as
INSERT INTO table1 values ('Clerk#0008000', '2016-01-01');

Loading Data into an empty Impala Table with account data partitioned by area code

I'm trying to copy data from a table called accounts into an empty table called accounts_by_area_code. I have the following fields in accounts_by_area_code: acct_num INT, first_name STRING, last_name STRING, phone_number STRING. The table is partitioned by areacode (the first 3 digits of phone_number.
I need to use a SELECT statement to extract the area code into an INSERT INTO TABLE command to copy the speciļ¬ed columns to the new table, dynamically partitioning by area code.
This is my last attempt:
impala-shell -q "INSERT INTO TABLE accounts_by_areacode (acct_num, first_name, last_name, phone_number, areacode) PARTITION (areacode) SELECT STRLEFT (phone_number,3) AS areacode FROM accounts;"
This generates ERROR: AnalysisException: Column permutation and PARTITION clause mention more columns (5) than the SELECT / VALUES clause and PARTITION clause return (1). I'm not convinced I have even the basic syntax correct so any help would be great as I'm new to Impala.
Impala creates partitions dynamically based on data. So not sure why you want to create an empty table with partitions because it will be auto created while inserting new data.
Still, I think you can create empty table with partitions like this-
impala-shell -q "INSERT INTO TABLE accounts_by_areacode (acct_num) PARTITION (areacode)
SELECT CAST(NULL as STRING), STRLEFT (phone_number,3) AS areacode FROM accounts;"

add partition in hive table based on a sub query

I am trying to add partition to a hive table (partitioned by date)
My problem is that the date needs to be fetched from another table.
My query looks like :
ALTER TABLE my_table ADD IF NOT EXISTS PARTITION(server_date = (SELECT max(server_date) FROM processed_table));
When i run the query hive throws the following error:
Error: Error while compiling statement: FAILED: ParseException line 1:84 cannot recognize input near '(' 'SELECT' 'max' in constant (state=42000,code=40000)
Hive does not allow to use functions/UDF's for the partition column.
Approach 1:
To achieve this you can run the first query and store the result in one variable and then execute the query.
server_date=$(hive -e "set hive.cli.print.header=false; select max(server_date) from processed_table;")
hive -hiveconf "server_date"="$server_date" -f your_hive_script.hql
Inside your script you can use the following statement:
ALTER TABLE my_table ADD IF NOT EXISTS PARTITION(server_date =${hiveconf:server_date});
For more information on the hive variable substitution, you can refer link
Approach 2:
In this approach, you will need to create a temporary table if the partition data you are expecting is already not loaded in any other partitioned table.
Considering your data doesn't have the server_date column.
Load the data into temporary table
set hive.exec.dynamic.partition=true;
Execute the below query:
INSERT OVERWRITE TABLE my_table PARTITION (server_date)
SELECT b.column1, b.column2,........,a.server_date as server_date FROM (select max(server_date) as server_date from ) a, my_table b;

How to use insert statement for a Hive partitioned table?

I have a hive table dynpart.
id int
name char(30)
city char(30)
thisday string
# Partition Information
# col_name data_type comment
thisday string
It is partitioned by 'thisday' whose datatype is STRING.
How can I insert a single record into the table in a particular partition. I know there is load command to load an entire file data into hive table. I just want to know how an Insert statement can be written for a partitioned table. I tried to write command like below but this is taking data from another table.
insert into droplater partition(thisday='30/03/2017') select * from dynpart;
The table: Droplater has the same structure as dynpart. But the above command is to insert the data from another table. What I'd like to learn is to write a simple insert command into a partition, like: insert into tabname values(1,"abcd","efgh");into the table.
This will work for primitive types only (no arrays, structs etc.)
insert into tabname partition (thisday='30/03/2017') values (1,"abcd","efgh");
This will work for all types
insert into tabname partition (thisday='30/03/2017') select 1,"abcd","efgh";
P.s.
By all means, partition your table by date ((thisday date) )
insert into tabname partition (thisday=date '2017-03-30') ...
or at least use the ISO date format
insert into tabname partition (thisday='2017-03-30') ...

how to insert uniontype in hive

I read the famous example about union type in hive
CREATE TABLE union_test(foo UNIONTYPE<int, double, array<string>, struct<a:int,b:string>>);
SELECT foo FROM union_test;
{0:1}
{1:2.0}
{2:["three","four"]}
{3:{"a":5,"b":"five"}}
{2:["six","seven"]}
{3:{"a":8,"b":"eight"}}
{0:9}
Ok.. great.
what is the syntax in hive sql to insert these lines ?
I tried insert into union_test values (1.0)
SemanticException [Error 10044]: Line 1:12 Cannot insert into target table because column number/types are different 'union_test': Cannot convert column 0 from string to uniontype,struct>.
On the other hand, if I create one table with a double, how can I feed it with union_test table ?
Surely there is a tip.
Thanks
Did you consider looking at the documentation?
Straight from Hive Language Manual UDF, under "Complex type constructors"...
create_union (tag, val1, val2, ...)
Creates a union type with the value that is being pointed to by the tag parameter.
OK, that explanation about the "tag parameter" is very cryptic.
For examples, just look at the bottom of that blog post and/or at the answer to that question on the HortonWorks forum.
CREATE table testtable5(c1 integer,c2 uniontype<integer,string>);
INSERT INTO testtable5 VALUES(5,create_union(0,1,'testing'));
SELECT create_union(if(c1<0,0,1),c1,c2) from testtable5;
INSERT INTO testtable5 VALUES(1,cretae_union(1,1,'testing'));
SELECT create_union(if(c1<0,0,1),c1,c2) from testtable5;

How do you insert data into complex data type "Struct" in Hive

I'm completely new to Hive and Stack Overflow. I'm trying to create a table with complex data type "STRUCT" and then populate it using INSERT INTO TABLE in Hive.
I'm using the following code:
CREATE TABLE struct_test
(
address STRUCT<
houseno: STRING
,streetname: STRING
,town: STRING
,postcode: STRING
>
);
INSERT INTO TABLE struct_test
SELECT NAMED_STRUCT('123', 'GoldStreet', London', W1a9JF') AS address
FROM dummy_table
LIMIT 1;
I get the following error:
Error while compiling statement: FAILED: semanticException [Error
10044]: Cannot insert into target because column number type are
different 'struct_test': Cannot convert column 0 from struct to
array>.
I was able to use similar code with success to create and populate a data type Array but am having difficulty with Struct. I've tried lots of code examples I've found online but none of them seem to work for me... I would really appreciate some help on this as I've been stuck on it for quite a while now! Thanks.
your sql error. you should use sql:
INSERT INTO TABLE struct_test
SELECT NAMED_STRUCT('houseno','123','streetname','GoldStreet', 'town','London', 'postcode','W1a9JF') AS address
FROM dummy_table LIMIT 1;
You can not insert complex data type directly in Hive.For inserting structs you have function named_struct. You need to create a dummy table with data that you want to be inserted in Structs column of desired table.
Like in your case create a dummy table
CREATE TABLE DUMMY ( houseno: STRING
,streetname: STRING
,town: STRING
,postcode: STRING);
Then to insert in desired table do
INSERT INTO struct_test SELECT named_struct('houseno',houseno,'streetname'
,streetname,'town',town,'postcode',postcode) from dummy;
No need to create any dummy table : just use command :
insert into struct_test
select named_struct("houseno","house_number","streetname","xxxy","town","town_name","postcode","postcode_name");
is Possible:
you must give the columns names in sentence from dummy or other table.
INSERT INTO TABLE struct_test
SELECT NAMED_STRUCT('houseno','123','streetname','GoldStreet', 'town','London', 'postcode','W1a9JF') AS address
FROM dummy
Or
INSERT INTO TABLE struct_test
SELECT NAMED_STRUCT('houseno',tb.col1,'streetname',tb.col2, 'town',tb.col3, 'postcode',tb.col4) AS address
FROM table1 as tb
CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS sunil_table(

"state","haryana","city","fbd","pincode",4500);???
