I have 2 environments. The first one is a mac where I have installed Tomcat 8 by extracting the .zip file downloaded from Apache's homepage. The second one is a virtual machine on this mac which runs Ubuntu 15.04.
I have my web application as a war-file and can deploy that on my mac's Tomcat without any problem. Now, I want to do exactly the same deployment on the Ubuntu. So I copy the Tomcat-folder over to my Ubuntu along with my war-file and try to do the same deployment there. Before I do this I check so that JRE_HOME and JAVA_HOME is set the Java 8 installation I installed via PPA. I then start Tomcat and it seems to work so far. I go to localhost:8080 and Tomcat is running. I look at the JVM version at the status page and it reads 1.8.0_91_b14, seems good right? But then I try the deployment and I get this error:
FAIL - Application at context path /app could not be started
FAIL - Encountered exception org.apache.catalina.LifecycleException: Failed to start component ...
I tried with a very simple web app as well, one that only contained a index.html file. That is working. But this one, with compiled java classes and jsp and stuff does not. Here is more from the tomcat log files:

What is different from my mac that causes this?
UPDATE:
I can run a simple war with a jsp file, a servlet class. I think it's very strange and confusing.
UPDATE:
Ok, now I have tested with Glassfish on the virtual machine and the application is running there, but instead I get sql exception that no connection to database could be created.
I went back to my mac and noticed that I get no exceptions, but no items from my database are shown in my page. The only time they are shown is when started with Eclipse. So I let eclipse build the war file and do manual deployment, but same thing, no items loaded.
My hypothesis is that the database (driver, config, ect) are not enough/corrupted when I manually deploy to the server. ANYONE KNOWING A BIT MORE ABOUT HOW SERVERS WORK?? And still, why does deployment work on mac but not Ubuntu?
UPDATE:
Apparently the logging with log4j doesn't work either when I deploy manually. Somehow all my external resources and communication gets fucked up when I deploy manually. Why doesn't the log files tell me what is the problem??
UPDATE:
I changed eclipse tomcat server installation location to the same location as my tomcat home. Now I can se how Eclipse changed the Tomcat folder. I copied over that tomcat installation to Ubuntu and tried, but same failure..
UPDATE:
Now, I recognized the log-files for the virtual host called localhost, and it gives me a much more precise cause of the problem:

UPDATE:
There was another post on this new error and it turned out that I had duplicate jar files of type javassist-xyz.jar of different versions. I removed one of them and now I get this instead:
com.mchange.v2.resourcepool.CannotAcquireResourceException: A ResourcePool could not acquire a resource from its primary factory or source
Another with the exact same problem now: com.mchange.v2.resourcepool.CannotAcquireResourceException: A ResourcePool could not acquire a resource from its primary factory or source
SOLVED:
I finally solved it! Apperently the port on which my tcp database server runs on was not closed when Tomcat started, so it could not start a new one from the old state. The situation evolved when the application context couldn't be destroyed properly on all my attempts to get it working. I added some more logging to my AppContextListener class and that did spot this problem. The only real severe problem I had in the end, was a duplicate of two jar files!

In Intellij, the Spring initializr option is available, but the pane where the options for adding dependencies reside is blank. I tried upgrading my IDE to no avail. This is true when either creating a new project or a new module. This was not an issue until my work issued me a PowerMac (was on Windows before).
When I try to access Initializr, idea.log shows the following stacktrace:

How can I fix this?
It looks like a Java bug specific to your NTLM proxy.
It may help if you use IntelliJ IDEA 2019.1 EAP version with JetBrains Runtime 11 version where this issue should be fixed.
i have the following problem: we raised our application from java6 with tomcat6 to java8 with tomcat8. Starting the application on our local machines with Oracle Java 8 worked witouth problem. But on our server we get

We investigated the problem and the ReflectionUtils.makeAccessible() Method is provided by spring-core-2.0.8.jar and org.springframework.core-3.0.4.RELEASE.jar
Our server is running OpenJDK 8 instead of Oracle Java 8 and it seems like the application tries to use makeAccessible() from the spring-core-2.0.8.jar instead of the org.springframework.core-3.0.4.RELEASE.jar. When we delete the spring-core-2.0.8.jar in our lib Folder the application starts without a problem. Unfortunately the spring-core-2.0.8.jar comes as a maven transitive dependency from a maven hibernate dependency, therefore we need this jar.
Do you have any ideas how to solve this?
Thanks in advance, best regards

I assume this is referring to javax.servlet.ServletException. However, if I force one of the servlets to throw a ServletException (which I can test because it loads fine on my machine), it can find that class with no problem.
My build file looks something like this (full source here):
providedCompile (
"org.apache.tomcat:tomcat-catalina:$tomcatVersion",
)
compile (

"org.springframework:org.springframework.web.servlet:$springVersion",

Is there another ServletException that I'm missing a .jar for? Or is it that the .jar might not have loaded during server startup, but gets loaded later? The app is currently configured to use servlet API 2.4. I've seen some other threads saying to upgrade it, but changing it to 2.5 didn't help.

OK this is embarrassing: there must have been some stale files hiding in my colleague's source tree, maybe masked by .gitignore. Doing a clean checkout of the repository has "fixed" the problem.
I say "fixed" because we never really got to the bottom of it: the error was saying that it couldn't find ServletException. I implemented my own ServletException in the default package (thanks Thilo for the tip), but it just showed another similar error. Anyway it works now, so chances are it was just a classpath problem involving a file that shouldn't have been in the source tree.
I am getting this strange error while trying to start Spring Boot application in Servlet container.
The same WAR starts normally in standalone Tomcat server, but gives the error seen below if started using Gretty Gradle plugin
Any ideas that it means?

Apparently there is a bug in Gretty related to classloading.
Starting Gretty with WAR e.g. gradlew appRunWar allows to work around it.
There are multiple bugs opened for it:

Any help will be appreciated.
it may be because of previous applications are not properly undeployed from tomcat container.
Stop the tomcat, and then
go to the tomcat conf directory /<Tomcat root>/conf/Catalina/localhost and clean the xml files in that directory. and restart the tomcat
Note:
1. make a backup of those xml files before deleting, so that if this not works then you can restore it.
To do the same in Netbeans IDE
In Netbeans menu go to Window->Services ,
In the listed Services expand Servers->->web applications-> right click on each application and choose Undeploy
Note: the tomcat need to be in running condition for this
I had exact the same problem and because Eclipse Tomcat was using the same working directory as Tomcat standalone I cannot started the standalone Tomcat properly. The solution was to change the Eclipse-Tomcat Config - Arguments - Working directory to something different than Tomcat/webapps.
