I know this may sound weird - maybe like search for "google" using google - but I'm fighting with a problem using the standalone feature of bundler.
Background:
I'm creating a rpm for "single click" installation of a rails application. What I don't want is to build all the necessary gems on the target server - I want to deliver them within the rpm file.
So I did the "hack" using
bundle install --standalone default --binstubs bin/
But rails require bundler. Shure there are ways to remove bundler from rails - but this isn't easy in an grown application. So I don't have a problem with using bundler in my production setup.
But bundler won't install bundler to the standalone folder - and I couldn't figure out how to do this
Is there a way to work arround this? Or is there a better way without building the gems locally and without refactoring the rails app?

I am trying to make an CLI tool with ruby.
My tool require some library in bundle (log4r, ...). So problem appear when i switch my ruby version (2.0.0 -> 2.1.2) or when switch gemset, some gem are not install in new ruby environment.
So how can i make my app work like vagrant, which work in every version of ruby i am using?
If you package your application as a Gem, you can include a Gemspec that describes your application. One of the things you can specify is its runtime dependencies; when the user runs gem install myapp, then the gem command will make sure it includes everything you specified (like log4r).
It will be harder to make this happen without Rubygems. You can package your application along with a defined version of Ruby and all its requirements - that's what Vagrant does - but that makes your application a larger download and means you have more to maintain. It's going to be hard work if you want to install your app system-wide and have it work with every single Ruby environment. It's far better to let the gem application install your app (whether systemwide, or via rbenv/rvm) and let that manage your dependencies for you. There's the default gems plugin for rbenv and rvm gemsets to help manage this.
I am new to Ruby but I really enjoyed it.
I used Aptana Studio 3 as an IDE, but I feel it lacks support (even though I installed the undle). When I created a Ruby project, there were no files inside it.
I added a test.rb file and started playing with it.
Now I hav a simple project in which I needed to install some gems. To do so I opened the CMD, navigated to my project's folder and issued the command "gem install xxxx". On my test.rb I include the gems using require 'xxxx'.
What is the best practice to add gems?
If I ever wanted to deploy this application, I would need to add the gems to my production server. Is there any way I can list the required gems so that the server intalls it automatically when I run deploy the application?
thanks!
Put them in a Gemfile, it is used to manage the gem required by an application.
http://bundler.io/v1.3/gemfile.html
It might depend on where you are deploying to but I like to use Capistrano for deployment. Capistrano will install the gems for you by running bundler which reads your Gemfile.
Also checkout bundler. It will read your Gemfile (create one if you don't have one). To install your gems it is as simple as:
$ bundle install
I started a new rails application project with rubymine.
After that Rubymine ran a bundle install.
project did not succeed in running
on one project - with no mysql definition the error is
gemnotfound - could not find gem sqlite
on one project - with mysql definition the error is
gemnotfound - could not find gem mysql2
Does someone have an idea what are those ?
shouldnt bundle install brought me those?
How can I start a simple rails project using rubymine?
Is there a good tutorial with all these issues ?
Thanks you.
RubyMine may not be able to install these gems automatically as they depend on native libraries that may not be available on your system. You also need DevKit installed and working in order to install native extensions.
I suggest you to read related posts:
Cannot install mysql2 gem
Installing SQLite 3.6 On Windows 7
You can also use sqlite-ruby instead, as for the above gems you need sqlite3.dll and libmysql.dll in PATH.
Google is your friend, it's not that hard to find various installation guides.
Pretty fundamental question but I'm trying to understand how best to use Bundler in a deployment situation.
I'm working on a Sinatra application that has about 20 dependent gems. During development, I'm using RVM with a custom gemset for the application, and I run bundle install to update the gemset in accordance with the gemfile.
When it comes to deployment (manually for now, so I can understand how it all works before using a tool like capistrano), I need to do bundle install --development right? This downloads the gems and places them in vendor/bundle.
My question is what else do I need to do? I'm using Unicorn on the server - do I just bundle exec unicorn ... and everything just works? (i.e. bundler finds the vendor directory and uses the gems from there?)
Should unicorn be a vendored gem in the application or a separate 'system' gem on the server that all applications share?
You need --deployment key, not --development: http://gembundler.com/man/bundle-install.1.html#DEPLOYMENT-MODE
On first run bundler creates config in .bundle directory. You can check it by running bundle config or just cat .bundle/config in project's directory. So bundle exec unicorn is enough since bundler knows where gems are installed. On development machine you can also install gems to arbitrary directory using --path key. For more details see manpage for bundle install (link above or bundle help install).
I tried searching for this several times, but if this question has been answered already I didn't find it.
So, let's say I've developed a plain old gem (not a Rails app). I already know how to use Bundler for development, so I have a Gemfile and everything in my repository. However, I want this gem to use Bundler for dependency resolution when I install it, not just when I work on it.
Is there a way to do so, or would I have to resort to running its commands from a git checkout with bundle exec?
Bundler resolves dependencies not only for development. Just run bundle install on production server after deployment and it will install all needed gems there too.
If you need to install gems from several repositories, add row in you Gemfile:
