I didn't use TortoiseSVN much in university and hasn't used it since graduation until recently. The first and only time I touched it at work, I was trying to remember how to use it. I don't remember what I did but now TortoiseSVN is tracking my Desktop folder so I can see a red icon on my Desktop in the File Explorer (you know, that icon that indicates the folder is not synced with the repo).
It was never intended for the Desktop to be part of my project team's repo, I was just messing around. So I want to remove that icon i.e. stop TortoiseSVN from tracking my Desktop permanently. How do I do that?
Just delete the hidden .svn folder from your desktop
Delete hidden folder ".svn" on your Desktop.

Since this is my first app I naively have all my xcode files (swift code, assets, and storyboard) all saved to my desktop. Is there someway I can move it (or duplicated backups) to another location like github or google drive without messing up all the references?
There is nothing wrong with saving stuff to the desktop. But what should be on the desktop should be a project folder, with an organization like this:
Desktop
MyProject (this is the project folder)
MyProject.xcodeproj (this is the project)
MyProject (this is a group folder)
[everything else]
That is the situation that Xcode will create for you by default. And if that is indeed the situation, then all is well. You can just drag the project folder elsewhere and nothing will break. You can put it under git control and upload it to github and nothing will break. You can clone from github to another computer and nothing will break. This is how people operate every day, all the time.
(Don't put it on google drive, that's the kiss of death.)
If that is not the situation, then the situation is so bad that you would be better off starting all over again. It is possible to move stuff into the project folder, but then you have to alert the project to what you've done, and that can be an error-prone task for a beginner.
I'd like files downloaded via browser to also appear in "Recent" in Finder, as well as the normal content there. I really miss this functionality from Ubuntu and am aware of how much time and clicks it costs to not have it. How can that be achieved?
Recent folder is not connected with download folder. But you can drag download folder to the dock, then right click on folder and choose your settings you want.
I am working with the deployment feature to easily upload files to a server. So opening a specific project folder for which I have already set up deployment gives me the opportunity to work with the project files instantly and also upload them without any problems.
The problem is with opening the right folder. When setting up deployment for a project you choose a folder as the 'root' folder for this one project and when one wants to load this settings he has to choose the right folder when opening a project. Sometimes there are some differences which folder is chosen as root (most of the time the folder is 'domain', but sometimes it's another folder).
When I now want open a project folder to work with the files and have the deployment ready, I can not recognize in the popped up window which folder is the right one. Friends of mine (win8/Linux) tell me that they have a phpStorm icon instead of the standard folder icon.
On the other hand I told OSX to show me the hidden files on my system which results in following:
As you can see Finder shows me the .idea file, so at least I know the folder I am at right now is the project folder. But I in the future I don't want to check first in Finder, which folder the right one is and then open phpStorm to open it there.
I hope anybody understands my problem :). Thanks for any tips, really annoying topic.
Update:
Maybe the problem comes with the fact that phpStorm on OSX uses Finder as the explorer when trying to open a project folder. The explorer on Windows looks similar
I posted on the jetbrains helpforum, the 'answer' was:
Relates to: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-100279
Duplicates: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-131303
Nothing anybody could have find out themselves, there does not seem to be a better answer than "give the folders related to PHPStorm the right icon, manually".
I copied a repository (whole folder) from one computer to another and added the repository to the TortoiseHG workbench through File->Open Repository.
Everything works fine, except no overlay icons are showing in windows explorer in the directory of the copied repository (for whether the file has been modified, or it's up to date, etc).
Does anyone know how I can fix this?
Thanks
I found the answer https://bitbucket.org/tortoisehg/thg/issue/3933/overlay-icons-not-showing-properly - see Shea Martin's reply near the bottom about windows only allowing 11 overlay icon registry entries
Update: So, this turns out to have nothing to do with Tortoise SVN. I use Mozy.com for off-site backups and their new version includes these icon overlays. They can be disabled via the config options...or see here http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?p=1385433. Thanks #OS for the answer.
Been using Tortoise SVN for some time on my Vista box. Within the last few days (and after recently upgrading to 1.5.4) the icon overlays are displaying on all files.
My exclude path is:
*
My include paths are:
C:\Users\jw\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\SVNProjects*
C:\Users\jw\Documents\VB Projects\SVNProjects*
I haven't touched those settings in months. Any ideas? Help. Thanks.
Something like that happened to me a few days ago and it turns out it's not related to Tortoise... I'm using Mozy to backup files automatically and their latest update includes icons very similar to Tortoise to mark backed-up files.
Icons usually appear for folders for files in a folder that have a hidden .svn subfolder. It sounds like your icon cache is corrupt though. You might also want to check the Icon Overlays section in the Settings dialog. If it's using the default icon cache, try killing the TSVNCache.exe process. If it's using the chell cache, kill explore.exe, in a cmd window go to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local, type "attrib –h IconCache.db" and then "del IconCache.db" and re-start explorer.exe.
The icons can disappear because there is a limit to the number of overlays Windows will support.
See http://tortoisesvn.net/faq.html#ovlnotshowing
agree with marxidad,
you can also try to rebuild the tortoisesvn icon cache using
TortoiseProc.exe
/command:rebuildiconcache
from the command line.
