gnome-terminal -v -- $SHELL launches a new bash shell just as expected.
gnome-terminal -v -- $SHELL -c 'cd /' does nothing at all. A window briefly flashes, and that's it. Tried many other commands, like echo with the same result.
journalctl -f reveals Failed to start VTE child process 11350 launched by gnome-terminal-server process 7182. and that's it.
How do I debug this further?
this may not be the exact solution you need, but if you make a new profile for the terminal, and change the property "when command exits" to "hold terminal open"
then include the following argument:
gnome-terminal --window-with-profile=[new profile name here]
the new window will not briefly flash, and may allow more detailed debugging from whatever processes are called in the new window
I am trying to open multiple tabs and execute a series of commands in each tab. Lets say I open 3 tabs tab1, tab2, tab3. Then in each tab I would like to execute following:
ssh user#address (PublicKey Authentication is setup and
hence no need to enter password)
Launch python scripts (python some.py)
Hold the tab open after executing the commands to see the outputs.
I went through some threads and have a rough outline for Bash script.

When I run the above script, a new terminal opens and I can see that I have ssh-ed into the target address but the other command uname -a didnot execute.
I would like to build upon this to implement the following:
Open multiple tabs and run commands. Ex : gnome-terminal --tab -e
"bash -c \"ssh user#address; python file1.py; exec bash\"" -tab -e
"bash -c \"ssh user#address; python file2.py; exec bash\""
Wait for one of the python file to start executing before opening
another tab and repeating the process for another python file.
Also is there a better way to implement the same task ?

You should consider using screen or tmux or a similar terminal multiplexer for this.
Example usage:
screen -d -m bash -c 'ls; bash'
to initiate a screen session in which ls was executed and then a shell started, and then
screen -X screen bash -c 'date; bash'
to create a new window in the existing screen session, run date therein and then start a shell in that window.
Mind that the programs are run without you seeing their output right away on your controlling terminal. You can then attach to the screen session using
screen -x
Which attach you to the running session and will show you one of the screen windows (the virtual terminals of your two running programs). Typing Ctrl-A n will switch through the windows, Ctrl-A d will detach you again, leaving the programs running, so you can attach later with screen -x.
You can attach from several locations (e. g. from two different Gnome-terminals) to the same running windows. Both will then show the same contents.
Another advantage of using screen is that you can log out and the programs keep running. If you later login again, you can still attach to the running sessions.
Only a direct attack like a reboot, a kill-signal or an interaction (like pressing Ctrl-C while being attached) will terminate your programs then.
I'm writing a simple menu using the dialog utility in a bash script.
The idea is that the menu script will run in a screen session which I can connect to over SSH (or whatever else).
I want to then use the menu to start/stop applications running on the machine. For example there might be a menu item called "Start/Stop gEdit". When it's selected, one of two things could happen:
If gEdit is not currently running, it starts it
If gEdit is currently running, it stops it
My question is, what is the best way to launch (and close) applications from my bash script? This is on Debian.
Edit: Is upstart the right choice here? It seems weird to write an upstart script for something like gEdit.

You can run/stop applications from bash script the same way you do it from command line.
./ to run
kill -9 pid to close.
Debian now is using systemd Not upstart.
If you want to see if gedit is running in order to start/stop you can do something like pgrep gedit:

When I'm done with Terminal, I want to exit it. Right now, I have three options:
killall Terminal. It will end the process, but rather abruptly. I don't think this is the best idea.
Call exit. I've changed the settings so exit closes Terminal. The app still appears open in the Dock though, and doesn't do what I want it to do.
Right click>Quit. However, this isn't a Terminal command to exit it.
So now, what is the way I should exit and close Terminal? I've heard something about osascript but I'm not too sure. I want to exit and close, so that Terminal is no longer open, both as a window and as a process.

Actually, you should set a config on your Terminal, when your Terminal is up press ⌘+, then you will see below screen:
Then press shell tab and you will see below screen:
Now select Close if the shell exited cleanly for When the shell exits.
By the above config each time with exit command the Terminal will close but won't quit.
In the Terminal app, Preference >> Profiles tab.
Select the Shell tab on the right.
You can choose Never Ask before closing to suppress the warning.
You could use AppleScript through the osascript command:
osascript -e 'tell application "Terminal" to quit'
In a terminal window, you can type:
kill -9 $(ps -p $PPID -o ppid=)
This will kill the Terminal application process, which is the parent of the parent of the current process, as seen by the kill command.
To close a Terminal window from within a running script, you need to go up one more level in the process hierarchy like this:
kill -9 $(ps -p $(ps -p $PPID -o ppid=) -o ppid=)
I 've been using ctrl + d. It throws you out into the destination where You've started the sqlite3 command in the first place.
osascript -e "tell application \"System Events\" to keystroke \"w\" using command down"
This simulates a CMD + w keypress.
If you want Terminal to quit completely you can use:
osascript -e "tell application \"System Events\" to keystroke \"q\" using command down"
This doesn't give any errors and makes the Terminal stop cleanly.
You can also use this convoluted command, which does not trigger a warning about terminating its own process:
osascript -e "do shell script \"osascript -e \\\"tell application \\\\\\\"Terminal\\\\\\\" to quit\\\" &> /dev/null &\""; exit
This command is quite long, so you could define an alias (such as quit) in your bash profile:
alias quit='osascript -e "do shell script \"osascript -e \\\"tell application \\\\\\\"Terminal\\\\\\\" to quit\\\" &> /dev/null &\""; exit'
This would allow you to simply type quit into terminal without having to fiddle with any other settings.
Use the osascript command in your code as icktoofay mentioned: osascript -e 'tell application "Terminal" to quit'
Then, open Terminal preferences, go to Settings > Shell, and set "Prompt before closing:" to "Never." Terminal should now quit completely (not remain open in your dock) and ignore the prompt before quitting. If you have only one Terminal window open and the osascript command is your last line of code, it should wait for whatever command you ran before to finish.
This would not be ideal if you are running scripts in the same window or other windows in the background (for instance, you may run a command in the background and continue using the current window for other commands if the first command is followed by an ampersand); be careful!
If you wrap the osascript code in a shell script file, you can probably call it with whatever pithy file-name you give it---as long as it is in Terminal's search path (run echo $PATH to see where Terminal looks for scripts).
I've been using
quit -n terminal
at the end of my scripts. You have to have the terminal set to never prompt in preferences
So Terminal > Preferences > Settings > Shell
When the shell exits
Close the window
Prompt before closing
Never
Create a script:

This is what I did for a command I just wrote. I wanted to be able to create a "shortcut" to the Backup directory for Apple Configurator that worked on different computers, but since it's relative to the user's home directory, I needed to make it a .command file. Here are the contents:

I tried several variations of the answers here. No matter what I try, I can always find a use case where the user is prompted to close Terminal.
Since my script is a simple (drutil -drive 2 tray open -- to open a specific DVD drive), the user does not need to see the Terminal window while the script runs.
My solution was to turn the script into an app, which runs the script without displaying a Terminal window. The added benefit is that any terminal windows that are already open stay open, and if none are open, then Terminal doesn't stay resident after the script ends. It doesn't seem to launch Terminal at all to run the bash script.

my bash script reads in a few variables and then runs airodump on my home network. I would like to keep the window with airodump running and open some new terminals to run other commands for network discovery while the airodump screen is open (so i can see the results).
right now what i have looks like this (edited for brevity):

the first command that uses the whole terminal (airodump) starts up fine and i can see the network, but then it just stays on that screen. If i ctrl+c then it goes back to prompt but i can see the error : Usage: terminator [options] error no such option
i want the netstat and nmap commands to appear and stay in their own terminal windows, how can i do this?
The terminal window is generated by a separate program from the command running inside. Try one of these variations:
xterm -e airomon-start wlan0 "$channel","$channel" &
gnome-terminal -x airomon-start wlan0 "$channel","$channel" &
konsole -e airomon-start wlan0 "$channel","$channel" &
Pick the command that invokes the terminal program you like. You'll have to do this for every command that you want run in its own window. Also, you need to use a single & at the end of each such command line -- not a double && -- those do totally different things. And the last line of your script should be just
wait
that makes it not exit out from under all the terminals, possibly causing them all to die.
Obligatory tangential shell-scripting nitpick: ALWAYS put shell variable uses inside double quotes, unless you know for a fact that you need word-splitting to happen on a particular use.
If the script is running in the foreground in the terminal, then it will pause while an interactive command is using the terminal. You could change the script to run airodump in a new terminal as well, or you could run the background commands before you start airodump (maybe after sleeping, if you're concerned they won't work right if run first?)
