My XPath expression appears to be slightly wrong. Here is a snippet of my XML..

<wd:ID wd:type="Document_ID">VALUE 2</wd:ID>

I am looking to extract 'VALUE 2' as a single output.
The current XPath I am is not working:
/wd:Repository_Document_Reference/wd:ID[#wd:type='Document_ID']
Does my XPath need a slight tweak?

Your XPath selects
<wd:ID wd:type="Document_ID">VALUE 2</wd:ID>
from the XML you've shown. In a context where this is evaluated as a string, it will indeed be
VALUE 2
If you wish to force it to be evaluated as a string, you can explicitly take the string value of your XPath:
string(/wd:Repository_Document_Reference/wd:ID[#wd:type='Document_ID'])
However, there's a chance that the rest of your document, which you've not shown, is causing other complications. Your XPath might be selecting multiple elements or no elements. You have to make sure that your XPath is specific enough to only be selecting the element you want. You also have to make sure that you've defined the namespaces prefix, wd properly. Without knowing more about your actual example, we can't say.
Try;
/wd:Repository_Document_Reference/wd:ID[contains(#wd:type,"Document_ID")]

I have a certain XPATH-query which I use to get the height from a certain HTML-element which returns me perfectly the desired value when I execute it in Chrome via the XPath Helper-plugin.

However, when I use the same query via the Get Element Attribute-keyword in the Robot Framework

... then I got an InvalidSelectorException about this XPATH.

So, the Robot Framework or Selenium removed the #-sign and everything after it. I thought it was an escape -problem and added and removed some slashes before the #height, but unsuccessful. I also tried to encapsulate the result of this query in the string()-command but this was also unsuccessful.
Does somebody has an idea to prevent my XPATH-query from getting broken?
It looks like you can't include the attribute axis in the XPath itself when you're using Robot. You need to retrieve the element by XPath, and then specify the attribute name outside that. It seems like the syntax is something like this:
Get Element Attribute xpath=(//*/div[#class="BarChart"]/*[name()="svg"]/*[name()="svg"]/*[name()="g"]/*[name()="rect" and #class="bar bar1"])#height
or perhaps (I've never used Robot):
Get Element Attribute xpath=(//*/div[#class="BarChart"]/*[name()="svg"]/*[name()="svg"]/*[name()="g"]/*[name()="rect" and #class="bar bar1"])[1]#height
This documentation says
attribute_locator consists of element locator followed by an # sign and attribute name, for example "element_id#class".
so I think what I've posted above is on the right track.
You are correct in your observation that the keyword seems to removes everything after the final #. More correctly, it uses the # to separate the element locator from the attribute name, and does this by splitting the string at that final # character.
No amount of escaping will solve the problem as the code isn't doing any parsing at this point. This is the exact code (as of this writing...) that performs that operation:
def _parse_attribute_locator(self, attribute_locator):
parts = attribute_locator.rpartition('#')
...
The simple solution is to drop that trailing slash, so your xpath will look like this:
//*/div[#class="BarChart"]/... and #class="bar bar1"]#height`
I've been hacking away at this one for hours and I just can't figure it out. Using XPath to find text values is tricky and this problem has too many moving parts.
I have a webpage with a large table and a section in this table contains a list of users (assignees) that are assigned to a particular unit. There is nearly always multiple users assigned to a unit and I need to make sure a particular user is assigned to any of the units on the table. I've used XPath for nearly all of my selectors and I'm half way there on this one. I just can't seem to figure out how to use contains with text() in this context.
Here's what I have so far:
//td[#id='unit']/span [text()='asdfasdfasdfasdfasdf (Primary); asdfasdfasdfasdfasdf, asdfasdfasdfasdf; 456, 3456'; testuser]
The XPath Query above captures all text in the particular section I am looking at, which is great. However, I only need to know if testuser is in that section.
text() gets you a set of text nodes. I tend to use it more in a context of //span//text() or something.
If you are trying to check if the text inside an element contains something you should use contains on the element rather than the result of text() like this:
span[contains(., 'testuser')]
XPath is pretty good with context. If you know exactly what text a node should have you can do:
span[.='full text in this span']
But if you want to do something like regular expressions (using exslt for example) you'll need to use the string() function:
span[regexp:test(string(.), 'testuser')]
I am trying to automate some tests using selenium webdriver. I am dealing with a third-party login provider (OAuth) who is using duplicate id's in their html. As a result I cannot "find" the input fields correctly. When I just select on an id, I get the wrong one.
This question has already been answered for JQuery. But I would like an answer (I am presuming using Xpath) that will work in Selenium webdriver.
On other questions about this issue, answers typically say "you should not have duplicate id's in html". Preaching to the choir there. I am not in control of the webpage in question. If it was, I would use class and id properly and just fix the problem that way.
Since I cannot do that. What options do I get with xpath etc?
you can do it by driver.find_element_by_id, for example ur duplicate "duplicate_ID" is inside "div_ID" wich is unique :
driver.find_element_by_id("div_ID").find_element_by_id("duplicate_id")
for other duplicate id under another div :
driver.find_element_by_id("div_ID2").find_element_by_id("duplicate_id")
This XPath expression:
//div[#id='something']
selects all div elements in the XML document, the string value of whose id attribute is the string "something".
This Xpath expression:
count(//div[#id='something'])
produces the number of the div elements selected by the first XPath expression.
And this XPath expression:
(//div[#id='something'])[3]
selects the third (in document order) div element that is selected by the first XPath expression above.
Generally:
(//div[#id='something'])[$k]
selects the $k-th such div element ($k must be substituted with a positive integer).
Equipped with this knowledge, one can get any specific div whose id attribute has string value "something".
Which language are you working on? Dublicate id's shouldn't be a problem as you can virtually grab any attribute not just the id tag using xpath. The syntax will differ slightly in other languages (let me know if you want something else than Ruby) but this is how you do it:
driver.find_element(:xpath, "//input[#id='loginid']"
The way you go about constructing the xpath locator is the following:
From the html code you can pick any attribute:
<input id="gbqfq" class="gbqfif" type="text" value="" autocomplete="off" name="q">
Let's say for example that you want to consturct your xpath with the html code above (Google's search box) using name attribute. Your xpath will be:
driver.find_element(:xpath, "//input[#name='q']"
In other words when the id's are the same just grab another attribute available!
Improvement:
To avoid fragile xpath locators such as order in the XML document (which can change easily) you can use something even more robust. Two xpath locators instead of one. This can also be useful when dealing with hmtl tags that are really similar. You can locate an element by 2 of its attributes like this:
driver.find_element(:id, 'amount') and driver.find_element(xpath: "//input[#maxlength='50']")
or in pure xpath one liner if you prefer:
//input[#id="amount" and #maxlength='50']
Alternatively (and provided your xpath will only return one unique element) you can move one more step higher in the abstraction level; completely omitting the attribute values:
//input[#id and #maxlength]

This returns a list of all elements with the duplicate ID.

you should use driver.findElement(By.xpath() but while locating element with firebug you should select absolute path for particular element instead of getting relative path this is how you will get the element even with duplicate ID's
How would I test for the following expression in Selenium?
not(//select[#id='ddlCountry']/#class) or
not(contains(//select[#id='ddlCountry']/#class,'invalidValue'))
true if the class attribute doesnt exist, or if it does, the attribute doesn't contain invalidValue.
I've tried using the verifyElementPresent command, but it errors out, I assume because I'm returning a boolean rather than a node.
I'm happy with an alternative to this if theres no way to do the above using xPath.

I'm not very familiar with xpath. But I was working with xpath expressions and setting them in a database. Actually it's just the BAM tool for biztalk.
Anyway, I have an xml which could look like:

I was wondering if there is a way to use an xpath expression of getting all the SubElements concatted? At the moment, I am using:
/*[local-name()='File']/*[local-name()='Element3']/*[local-name()='SubElement']
This works if it only has one index. But apparently my xml sometimes has more nodes, so it gives NULL. I could just use
/*[local-name()='File']/*[local-name()='Element3']/*[local-name()='SubElement'][0]
but I need all the nodes. Is there a way to do this?

I need the one line because I set this xpath expression as an xml attribute (not my choice, it's specified). I tried string-join but it's not really working.

/File/Element3/SubElement will match all of the SubElement elements in your sample XML. What are you using to evaluate it?
If your evaluation method is subject to the "first node rule", then it will only match the first one. If you are using a method that returns a nodeset, then it will return all of them.
You can get all SubElements by using:
//SubElement
But this won't keep them grouped together how you want. You will want to do a query for all elements that contain a SubElement (basically do a search for the parent of any SubElements).
//parent::SubElement
Once you have that, you could (depending on your programming language) loop through the parents and concatenate the SubElements.
