How to clear cache in Yarn? - yarnpkg

I am doing some benchmark tests for Facebook's Yarn. For this, I need to clear my global Yarn cache.
Is there a command available for this? I have force-removed my ~/.yarn-cache folder, but this seems to be quite manual.

Ok I found out the answer myself. Much like npm cache clean, Yarn also has its own
yarn cache clean

Run yarn cache clean.
Run yarn help cache in your bash, and you will see:
Usage: yarn cache [ls|clean] [flags]
Options:
-h, --help output usage information
-V, --version output the version number
--offline
--prefer-offline
--strict-semver
--json
--global-folder [path]
--modules-folder [path] rather than installing modules into the node_modules folder relative to the cwd, output them here
--packages-root [path] rather than storing modules into a global packages root, store them here
--mutex [type][:specifier] use a mutex to ensure only one yarn instance is executing
Visit http://yarnpkg.com/en/docs/cli/cache for documentation about this command.

Also note that the cached directory is located in ~/.yarn-cache/:
yarn cache clean: cleans that directory
yarn cache list: shows the list of cached dependencies
yarn cache dir: prints out the path of your cached directory

In addition to the answer, $ yarn cache clean removes all libraries from cache. If you want to remove a specific lib's cache run $ yarn cache dir to get the right yarn cache directory path for your OS, then $ cd to that directory and remove the folder with the name + version of the lib you want to cleanup.

How does yarn find a module installed as a dev-dependency

script object in the package.json files is the modern replacement for Gulp or a similar build tool. Assume that Vuepress is installed with yarn add -D vuepress (meaning that the vuepress is installed locally in the node_modules folder.
Further, assume that the package.json file contains the following script object:
"scripts": {
"docs:dev": "vuepress dev docs",
"docs:build": "vuepress build docs"
}
How does the command yarn docs:dev executed in the terminal resolve the vuepress object? More often than not a similar invocation results with the error vuepress not recognized ...
P.S. Since I do not have vuepress in the path environment variable the only place where it can be resolved is in the root level node_modules folder.
I guessed correctly - both npm and yarn (invoked from the terminal) have the ability to inspect all environment variables, as well as search the folder node_modules. In my concrete example, running the command
npm run env | grep scripts
results with
npm_config_ignore_scripts=
npm_config_scripts_prepend_node_path=warn-only
npm_package_scripts_docs_build=vuepress build docs
npm_package_scripts_docs_dev=vuepress dev docs
npm_package_scripts_env=env

graphql-codegen not running with config file

In my package.json file I've got script entry that runs graphql-codegen but it complains that the --config argument is invalid:
$> yarn gen
yarn run v1.21.1
$ graphql-codegen --config codegen.yml
Error: Unknown argument: config
...
error Command failed with exit code 1.
info Visit https://yarnpkg.com/en/docs/cli/run for documentation about this command.
Since I believe the default file name is codegen.yml anyway, I try to run it with out that argument and nothing gets generated:
$> yarn graphql-codegen
yarn run v1.21.1
$ /home/aaron/projects/my_app/node_modules/.bin/graphql-codegen
Done in 0.17s.
Any ideas?
for me this solved the issue
Yarn
yarn add -D #graphql-codegen/cli
npm
npm i -D #graphql-codegen/cli
installation guide doc
Ok, I'm not sure exactly what I did to fix this. I believe that I had also installed graphql-codegen globally and tried to uninstall it with sudo npm uninstall graphql-codegen which removed a bunch of packages but the executable still exists:
$>which graphql-codegen
/usr/bin/graphql-codegen
However I decided to run yarn graphql-codegen init on a whim to see if init was valid and because I couldn't remember if I hadn't tried that already. I got the set up questions like normal so I ctrl+C'ed and just ran yarn graphql-codegen and it worked! Then I ran yarn graphql-codegen --watch to test that it took options and that also worked.
If anyone gets this issue, I hope these tips help you.
Try it: rm -rf ./node_modules && npm install
rm http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/trusty/man1/rm.1.html
remove files or directories
-f, --force ignore nonexistent files and arguments, never prompt
-r, -R, --recursive remove directories and their contents recursively
node_modules https://docs.npmjs.com/cli/v7/configuring-npm/folders
You can think of the node_modules folder like a cache
for the external modules that your project depends upon. When you npm
install them, they are downloaded from the web and copied into the
node_modules folder and nodejs is trained to look for them there when
you import them (without a specific path).
npm install https://docs.npmjs.com/cli/install/
This command installs a package and any packages that it depends on.
If the package has a package-lock, or an npm shrinkwrap file, or a
yarn lock file, the installation of dependencies will be driven by
that, respecting the following order of precedence:
npm-shrinkwrap.json
package-lock.json
yarn.lock
Might also be that you have apollo's graphql-codegen package installed, which also exposes a binary called graphql-codegen, which accepts args schema and output, but not config.
For me the solution was to install #graphql-codegen/cli.
graphql.config.yml
schema: http://localhost:8081/graphql
extensions:
codegen:
generates:
./schema.graphql:
- schema-ast
package.json
{
"codegen": "graphql codegen --config graphql.config.yml"
}
I've fixed the problem by using graphql-code-generator instead:
"scripts": {
"graphql:generate": "graphql-code-generator"
}

Yarn failing to start service based on "path/" argument must be of type string, Vue application, windows10

I am using a template, Vue cli3 application and it stopped working and I don't recall why. The error I am receiving is when I try to start the application I get this error.
yarn run serve
yarn run v1.16.0
error An unexpected error occurred: "The \"path\" argument must be of type string. Received type object".
info If you think this is a bug, please open a bug report with the information provided in "C:\\node\\TradeTriggers\\yarn-error.log".
info Visit https://yarnpkg.com/en/docs/cli/run for documentation about this command.
I can delete the node_modules and package.json.lock
I cannot do anything with yarn. No yarn install, yarn run serve, nothing and npm doesn't seem to want to run the application. I'm sorry there are a lot of tools to know in the JS world!
The machine is a windows10 machine and I cannot find yarn in my env variables, so the issue may lie there. I even tried installing the Yarn MSI but my version is still the one I installed through npm a while ago, still nothing.
I had problem that was caused by yarn looking at first the global settings file, ie global registry. It might be similar. On Windows, first check your yarn config path:
yarn config bin
Windows shows the path. Then in that folder, check whether you have a "rc" file, ie that is yarn configuration.
Try move this file out of the folder, for test. Have it as a copy somewhere else, where you can restore it if this does not help.
Then, once file is out, run your yarn commands again like you used to.
Sideline: on Linux, I had to remove a leftover buggy .yarnrc file in
/usr/local/share/.yarnrc
to get similar things working again. It was not a Vue app, but similar kind of error.
This error can occur when you are using Yarn Workspaces and have incompatible directories in the packages/ directory.
In my scenario, I used git subtrees to pull another repo into my project's packages/ directory. This directory had a package.json file, but it did not have compatible values for the fields required by Yarn Workspaces.
Moving the problematic package out of packages/ should fix this issue.

Specify cache directory for Go-Glide

Is there a way to specify a cache directory in Glide command ?
glide install --strip-vendor
Above command uses ~/.glide/cache directory as cache by default.
Is there a way to specify custom directory to use for cache or is there a way to avoid considering cache directory itself.
I do not want to use glide cache-clear command since multiple glide install command might be running in my environment. So this may affect working of another glide install command.
I use GLIDE_HOME=XXX to change it.

Yarn - remove package best practices

If you want to remove a package using Yarn should you:
run yarn remove [package]
or
delete it from package.json and run yarn install
Do both work the same? Will #2 update yarn.lock?
If you run yarn remove [package] it will remove the package from node_modules and also from the yarn.lock file.
If you manually delete from package.json and then run yarn install, the deleted package is not installed and the yarn.lock file is not updated.
When you remove with Yarn by running the first approach (#1).
yarn remove [package]
Both your entries from lockfile and package.json are removed. Look out for this message in the terminal.
$ yarn remove x2js
yarn remove v0.27.5
[1/2] Removing module x2js...
[2/2] Regenerating lockfile and installing missing dependencies...
success Uninstalled packages.
Done in 2.34s.
The new file won't have the package.
If you follow the second (#2) approach and delete it from package.json and run:
yarn install
There will we no effect on your lockfile.
So it is better to remove packages using the first approach (#1).
If you have deleted some package(s) directly from package.json and don't know what was there then your lockfile is not up to date.
I would suggest you delete the yarn.lock file . and then run yarn install. This way, you will get an updated yarn.lock file.
Automatic Deletion
yarn remove <package-name>
Manual Deletion
In case of manual removal of package from package.json ,
delete yarn.lock file and run yarn install
Best way to remove any package is
yarn remove "your package name"
Your package name should be same as your package.json file
