I need to open the dialpad linked to the ongoing call. Lets say if you call an answering machine and need to "press 2".
I need to emulate this for the user.
I know how to open the normal dialpad for calling, but I need the other one.

I am going to write an application which runs in the background on windows platform. If user is working on any browser (IE, Firefox, Chrome, etc) and any of the user action results in downloading activity, the background program should take control. The background program pop-ups a window asking user, if they want to download. If user proceeds with OK, then background program sends signal to browser to stop its download process and the background program will do download. If user rejects download by the background program, then default download of browser can go on.
For this please suggest if any working model is there in c#/VB.NET/C++ or how to achieve this activity.

I don't think you understand the whole notion of downloading. Any resource you get from the Internet is downloaded. Hence, anything would trigger your application. You can, however, try to "parse" URL to see the extension but this does not have to mean nothing, since you can give any file an arbitrary extension (well not exactly arbitrary, but you know.. ). Another option is detecting FTP downloads ( i assume this might be of more interest ). This way you'd "only" have to check for a specific protocol. The reason i quoted only in the last sentence is that none of these tasks is a simple one.
You basically want to write a Proxy, or use an existing one.
You might wanna take a look at WinPcap
Finally, none of this options really give you the infromation whether user is going to download a file. But if you write a proxy, you could stop the endpoint application of obtaining that file once you download it.
How can I abort a Windows Installer using VB Script that when it choose a certain option, the installer will force end?

It might help if you said something about what the incorrect option is. It might be something in a dialog (like TextBoxes) that you've added to the UI and you can't validate it because VS setups have no support for custom actions to run during the UI to validate entered data.
Either way, all custom actions in VS setups run after all the files are installed and the setup is virtually complete. In other words the only place to validate your data is after the install has finished when it's too late to stop the installation. All you can do is return an error from the VB Script and have the whole setup abort and roll back, and I don't think that's what you want.
If you really need this kind of functionality you need a tool that has support for it, somewhere in the dozens of tools that can create MSI files.
In a more functional tool I don't think you'd use a dialog choice like that. The dialog that offered the choice would have a custom action validate the data when the Next button is clicked. If the data is incorrect then the Next button stays disabled. If it is potentially incorrect a warning can appear on the dialog, but there is a Cancel-type button on every install dialog I've seen, so you don't need to abort anything - tell the user to cancel. But most dialogs have a back button to go back and change data too. In other words your UI flow isn't typical of most wizard-type flows in installs and therefore could be confusing.
I'm trying to build an terminal application that, when started, will take the user away from their prompt and present them with a screen with an interactive menu. I would like the user to be able to interact with it in the following way:
They will start the application by running my_app from the terminal. This will start the application and present them with the root menu.
They will use the cursor keys to navigate around the menu and use the [ENTER] key to make a selection.
When they make a selection, they will be presented with another screen/menu when they will do some work. When they are finished this work, they will press a key that will take them back to the root menu.
The key thing I'm after is for it to not be a scrolling view that just adds more information to the end. I'd like it to have distinct, encapsulated views with a navigation hierarchy. My problem is that I don't know how to produce such a view and present it to the user, and then dismiss it again once they're done. If someone could give me some kind of design pattern for this kind of application, I'll be able to take it from there.
FWIW, I'm using Ruby and would like the app to be cross-platform. If that's too much to ask, then Windows will suffice.

I'm new to programming and have taken some classes in it so I'm not sure if this is possible. I want to use a COTS software called 010 Hex Editor and write a script for the program to automate a couple tasks. These tasks can be run from a batch file according to their documentation.
Then I want to instruct the user to eject the device and reinsert it to clear the cache. (This I want done just with a simple pop-up window.
Then I also want to format the device which I assume can be done in a batch file as it can be done through dos on Windows.
My question is, with these 3 steps, can I build a simple GUI that has a button that says, "Start" or something like that, then the pop up window comes up to eject and reinsert, and then another button to format, and another button to exit. I'm not really familiar with what language this could be done in, and how to do this as the C++/Java classes I've taken have been more about syntax and OOP. Thanks!
You can use the windows messenger service to put up an alert - but on newer windows (vista/7) it's a pain to set all the permissions to allow this.
There are lots of free utilities that will popup a dialog from the command line, with a given message and wait for a response.
They are generally called messagebox or msgbox - sorry can't recommend any in particular
I'm confusing how to write good messages for my SW. like this below:

But I think it's really useless, Do you have any comment about how to write meaningful messages?
Personally I like messages that don't have to explain much. Number one mistake on windows applications is having buttons with standard texts instead of the operation that is performed when pressing it.
Example: Instead of this:
Do you want to save the changes before closing?
- To save the changes press Yes
- To discard the changes press No
- To cancel and keep the application open press Cancel
[Yes] [No] [Cancel]
I like
Do you want to save the changes before closing?
[Save] [Discard] [Cancel]
If this is a prompt, then I would use a question and answer style:
Save changes to this project?
[Yes] [No]
Don't state the obvious
But don't assume that what's obvious to you is obvious to the user.

Emulate the Mac: Many prompts have a "Huh?" link that leads to further help.
When in doupt, add a help option.
So instead of:
"Enter S for save of C for Cancel"
use
"Enter S for Save, C for Cancel or H for help"
Another big feature is if your application is consistent, particulary with it's operating environment. For example for virtually all Windows applications pressing the F1 key brings up a help screen. Similarly pressing F5 usually causes the current view to be refreshed.
What really drives users crazy is an inconstinent interface. Think about an application wehere sometimes pressing F1 would bring up help while in other parts of the application pressing F1 would mean "delete this document"
For this reason vendors (Apple, Microsoft) often publish style guides on how an application should interface with the user on their platform. For example Microsoft has the Windows User Experience Interaction Guidelines which:

Answer your specific user experience questions.
Make your job easier!"
If you are talking about error messages then it would be great when you let user know why this error occured.
For example if user see page 404 then you don't need to write a whole article for him BUT you should make reference "Why I see this page?"
If user made simple mistake in URL then he wouldn't open that reference but if your project changed its structure and a week ago it was correct URL and now it's not then user will certainly open reference and read nessecary information. It's a good style.
Describe the choices in terms of the user's actions. Be terse. "Omit needless words." Ideally, the buttons will describe the actions, and you don't need text to slow down the user. Assume that the user hates to read anything on the screen; even if the user is highly literate, and using your application to write deathless prose, the user is interested in what he or she has written, and not verbose text about what the system is doing.
If you're really helping them understand what the buttons do, tell them what will happen after they click them.
So don't say "click save to save" because they might not know what "save" means. Say "click save and your information will be stored for later" or "if you click cancel all the information you put in will be lost".
Keep it short!
Users will not read a paragraph that explains all the ins and outs of which button to press. You only get about 2 sentences max that the user will read. How many people actually read this second paragraph?
