Asset Catalog doesn't open in visual studio - visual-studio

I have a xamarin project that it didn't have any problem in visual studio. I don't know why but now I couldn't open the asset catalog to add new images for iOS in visual studio.
Can any body help me please?

I had the same problem and my solution was:
Exclude Assets.xcassets folder from project.
Uncheck readonly mark from Assets.xcassets.
Restart visual studio

I have had issues with the Asset Catalogs in Visual Studio, the issue for me was two things that both caused the Asset Catalogs not to open:
1 Missing/wrong entry in the .csproj file:
In the Contents.json there was specified a file (i.e. image#2x.png) however there was no entry in the .csproj file, this also includes cases where there was an entry in the csproj file but it was the wrong path:
Solution
Add the following (or edit the appropriate) line to the csproj file:
<ImageAsset Include="Resources\Assets.xcassets\image.png.imageset\image#2x.png">
<Visible>false</Visible>
</ImageAsset>
2 Slashes/Backslashes (seriously?!?)
In the csproj file for the iOS project, the ImageAsset tag for the image was with the wrong kind of slashes (which is probably why it sometimes works with Xamarin Studio on MacOS / Linux)
This will look like this when it does not work:
<ImageAsset Include="Resources/Assets.xcassets/image.png.imageset/image#2x.png">
<Visible>false</Visible>
</ImageAsset>
Solution
Reverse the slashes
<ImageAsset Include="Resources\Assets.xcassets\image.png.imageset\image#2x.png">
<Visible>false</Visible>
</ImageAsset>

I solved this problem by removing duplicates in my .csproj file.
By reading Peter's answer it helped me resolve this problem which I have been struggling for quite some time.
I had to create other assets files to hold new images since I couldn't reuse/open the assets files in Visual Studio any longer.
For instance, I had this as a duplicate:
<ImageAsset Include="Resources\Media.xcassets\LaunchImages.launchimage\Contents.json">
<Visible>false</Visible>
</ImageAsset>
Everything is working as it should now.

I had this issue.
Am using Xamarin Forms in Windows.
My fix:
Click 'Show All Files' in top menu bar of Solution Explorer
My 'Assets.xcassets' file was grayed out
Right-click on that file and selected 'Include in project'
Did a Clean, then a re-build, and all is well

Asset catalogs are supported by Visual Studio but if you need reliable support, manage your asset catalogs in Xamarin Studio and don't edit with Visual Studio.
There are so many issues with Visual Studio (Xamarin Forum) If you want a stable solution open solution in Visual Studio for Mac (former Xamarin Studio) , edit asset catalogs, save and open solution in Visual Studio to work again.
Works for me over a year stable now, but I wish there was a better solution for this.

In my case, it was the ios.csproj file got a little bit corrupted though the app is still compiled and running well. Luckily I have the other iOS app with the editor opened normally. Through comparing, I had seen some redundant entries of json files and png file listed in csproj, as siblings of AppDelegate.cs in the same ItemGroup. Removing these redundant entries in csproj and restarting VS 2017 had resolved the problem and the Assets.xcassets editor is opened normally again.

Type Script is not generating JavaScript in my Visual Studio Community edition 2015

I am using Visual Studio Community edition 2015 for development, I have added *.ts file to my project but its not automatically compiling. Also it does not show JavaScript preview pane. This post How do I enable the preview panel for TypeScript files in Visual Studio 2015? says that it's not supported anymore. That's fine, but why it's not compiling?
I referenced Missing Typescript Options in Web Essential for Visual Studio 2012
It says Split panes have been reintroduced in the latest version of web essentials http://vswebessentials.com/features/typescript but I can not see it
I do have typescript exe in following folder
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\TypeScript\1.5
I do have settings in Project Properties as follow
I do have settings as follow in Visual Studio
I see comment in http://www.typescriptlang.org/ as below
"Visual Studio includes TypeScript in the box, starting with Visual Studio 2013 Update 2. You can also edit TypeScript in VS Code, WebStorm, Atom, Sublime Text, and Eclipse"
What may be issue?
Solution
My "typings" file for jquery was out dated, I upgraded it and it resolved other errors and build was success, then JS files got generated.
Below post helped
JQuery definition screwed up with TypeScript 0.9
I can not close this question because I am still not able to get 'Preview Pane"
I regularly encounter this issue in VS 2015 and VS 2013. My solution is not a pretty one, but it works for me...
Close Visual Studio
Go to your scripts folder, delete all JavaScript files that have corresponding TypeScript files (only necessary to do this for TypeScript files that you have created for your project)
Open Visual Studio, clean, and build
If this doesn't work, open each TypeScript file, change one character, Save, re-build... hopefully the file will re-compile.
If this still doesn't work, open a Node.JS command prompt, change directory to the scripts directory, run;
tsc "yourfile.ts"
If this doesn't work, you've got bigger problems.
Make sure that you highlight the project in the solution explorer and then click the icon at the top that says "show all files" after you have compiled the project. You will then see the .js and maybe a .js.map file (greyed out). Select the files and then right click and 'include in project' and things should be good from there.
Some false-errors in my ts caused the issue, fixed by uncheck "Do not emit outputs if any errors are reported"
(The false error is from an outdated DefinitelyTyped file, the generated js file does not have any error.)
Maybe not having the option to expand the .ts file and see the generated .js can cause a confusion here.Try to compile your solution. Click on Show All Files and you must see all the .js generated in the same folder of your .ts files. Include your .js in the project if you want to have them visible as part of the solutions. Hope this helps
I know you say you added the .ts file but did you right-click and select 'include in project'. This will add it to the list of files that Visual Studio will check for TypeScript transpiling.
You need install Web Essential then restart the Visual studio -> clean Solution -> Rebuild it should work.

How can I open a Visual Studio solution without loading all of its projects?

I have big solution in Visual Studio that has some Android, Windows Phone and iOS Xamarin projects. Unfortunately, Visual Studio hangs (for hours) when it tries to load the whole solution. It worked fine as long as I usually only loaded either the Android or the iOS project (and plug-in project), but not both at the same time.
Unfortunately, I changed it and now I can't load the solution anymore. I read that settings like these are stored in the .suo file, but I have no idea how I change it (and disable loading the Android projects for example). How can I close certain projects without doing this after the whole solution loaded?
Thank you!
You can open the sln file in notepad and just delete the projects you dont need.
But to make sure you don't mess things up I would suggest making a backup of your sln file.
You could just open the PRJ file that you're interested in all by itself.

Unity Project doesn't have solution file

I just started learning unity and I created a project. But my project doesn't have a sln file included in. Every time I create a C# script and open it in Xamarin Studio I can't have any intellisense.
Is it normal not to have sln file in unity project?
If not, how can I add solution file to project?
Why that happened?
If "Open C# Project" doesnt create the .sln file, try updating your external tools first.
In Unity, go to Edit > Preferences, and make sure that Visual Studio is selected as your preferred external editor.
This created the sln file for me.
I finally found the answer.
I closed Xamarin and inside Unity went Assets > Sync MonoDevelop Project Doing this created the two .sln projects: -csharp.sln and .sln
For people looking for answers on newer versions of Unity you may have to build your C# project.
To do this go into File > Build Settings then select the option Create Visual Studio Solution. Then build that and your file explorer will ask you for which folder you want your visual studio solution to be placed into. Then Visual Studio should behave correctly.
For people looking for answers on newer versions of Unity you may have to build your C# project.
First install windows build also in unity hub then select target platform to windows. and now you can see visual studio solution checkbox.
To do this go into File > Build Settings then select the option Create Visual Studio Solution. Then build that and your file explorer will ask you for which folder you want your visual studio solution to be placed into. Then Visual Studio should behave correctly.
Like the post by SSchmid suggests, go into preferences and have Visual Studio as your preferred editor.
I was having a sync issue and the Solution wasn't showing the name of the unity project, ultimately interrupting intellisence.
Found in my settings that the code editor was set to General and not Visual Studio specifically.
Setting it to VS solved it for me.

Visual Studio Cannot Open File

I'm working on my first project in Visual Studio and I haven't used Windows much since '05, so please bear with me.
I've got my project open in Visual Studio 2008, and I'm trying to open a particular file for editing, but I get an error that says
"c:\path\to\file
Cannot open file.
I've verified that the file exists, and I can open it from Windows Explorer, but nothing from inside Visual Studio, any ideas?
I'm not familiar with Visual Studio, so my terminology might be incorrect.
The file appears in the tree in the Visual Studio Explorer pane, so I double clicked it, and got the error. The error said nothing more than the file path: Cannot open file.
How can I check permissions/ACLs in Windows? I assumed that since I could open it in Windows Explorer, I would be able to open it in Visual Studio.
And it's a .cpp file.
You may want to right-click on the file in the tree, and delete it from the project.
Then, add back an existing item.
Hopefully that will fix the problem.
Though I'm not familiar with this specifically, if you just want to move forward, I'd recommend creating a new project type and just adding all the existing files to it. Should be quicker and easier than diagnosing what could be many issues.
Other things to check: encoding type of the project file, permissions/ACLs (can you open that actual file from an unelevated VS prompt, for instance), etc.
Additionnaly to the other answers, I found out that this problem may arrise if the target .Net framework version specified in the project file isn't installed.
This seems to prevent visual studio from opening all the files contained in the project, and showing the "Unable to open file " message.
Correcting the version (in the csproj file or in the settings), saving and reloading the project fixes the problem.
I had same problem, my project were build on (.Net 4.5), which I uninstalled on my PC and replaced by (.Net 4.8), so just replacing project's target framework to the one which is installed "in my case (.Net 4.8)" should fix it.

Why does it say "Project with that name already opened in the solution"?

I recently migrated a VSS database to TFS 2008. Using Source Control Explorer, I got the latest version of a solution with 12 projects.
When I opened the solution in VS 2005, two of the projects were not found. I am not sure why these two projects were not found, but thought it easiest to just delete and re-add them to the solution.
When I do this, VS gives me a "A project with that name is already open in the solution." The project doesn't appear in solution explorer, and is not listed in the .sln file.
Any ideas?
I had this problem and I was able to solve it using the following steps:
Remove the project from the solution.
restart visual studio.
add the project to the solution as an existing project.
I had the same message... Seems like it comes from (.csproj) project file. Under first propertygroup there is a section named
<ProjectTypeGuids>...</ProjectTypeGuids>
which generally tells Visual Studio to handle that project in some specific way. Some Guids can be found here.
First make a backup copy of that file. Then removing that section can help you open the project as usual project. As it seems that the Visual Studio thinks that the project is not the type that is specified in the ProjectTypeGuids.
This did it for me:
remove the section <ProjectTypeGuids>...</ProjectTypeGuids> in each project
reopen each project, then save to overwrite the existing project file, finally exit
reopen the solution file
pray (optional)
If anyone uses AnkhSVN instead of TFS, it's also possible, that the .sln-file need the following lines:
GlobalSection(SubversionScc) = preSolution
Svn-Managed = True
Manager = AnkhSVN - Subversion Support for Visual Studio
EndGlobalSection
in the "Global" section.
Before anyone tries tempering with their solution- and project files, figure if you may have project dependencies outside the solution, such as IIS - and you forgot to start Visual Studio in Administrator-mode
For me, the project not loaded was because it was configured to use IIS on the local machine and I needed to start Visual Studio as an Administrator.
I have to say that removing the section <ProjectTypeGuids>...</ProjectTypeGuids> could create some problems.
In fact, such a section defines the type of the project and, if removed, could disable some features.
For example, if your project was originally defined as Smart Device (C#), after removing the aforementioned section the on-device debug may not working properly.
Delete .suo file. Build solution. Add Projects.
Unfortunately I don't know the why behind the obtuse error message, I can merely provide what steps I took to get it to go away.
In my case, I had reconfigured my local IIS (<UseIIS> not <UseIISExpress>) and it was no longer hosting the URL that was in the csproj <IISUrl> field.
Editing the .csproj file in another editor and changing that field to the new URL, followed by closing and opening the solution in VS resolved the issue.
I would try hand editing the project/solution files, they are text and pretty easy to read. You can edit the file in notepad. To open up the file as text in visual studio you need to first close the solution. Then do file->open and select the sln file, but instead of hitting the open button, press on the right side where there is an arrow and select open with.. from there you can select source code editor (text).
Somehow VS 2022 doesn't create a virtual directory anymore. I had to manually create the website in IIS
I had the same problem when i migrated a website to a web app project.
Unload the web app.
Add the existing website.
Reload the web app.
The following worked for me when I moved a project running vs2010 to another laptop.
I removed exactly the following and it worked:
<ProjecctType>Guid of sorts</ProjectType>
<SccProjectName>Svn</SccProjectName>
<SccLocalPath>Svn</SccLocalPath>
<SccAuxPath>Svn</SccAuxPath>
<SccProvider>SubversionScc</SccProvider>
For those looking for this while dealing with VSTO projects...
Be sure to have the Office Tools for Visual Studio installed in your machine before opening the project.
I solved it by changing Windows' regional settings. Instead of "English (Europe)", I used "English (United States)". Others have reported similar behaviors with changing for example from "Russian (Ukraine)" to "Russian (Russia)", etc.

In my case it was corrupted vbproj file. First line was missing:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
After adding this line I had to close the solution, delete .vs folder and open again.
I got it in Visual Studio 2022 version 17.4.4.
You may also see:
Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM
component.
when you try to reload your project.
One way to load the project (and deal with IIS directories later) is to edit the .csproj file and set UseIISExpress to true.
Replace:
<UseIISExpress>false</UseIISExpress>
with
<UseIISExpress>true</UseIISExpress>
Then you need to close your solution and open it again and the project should load.
I encountered this issue with web application projects.
When I tried to reload the projects, the VS2022 output said something like :
"The project is configured to use IIS. Unable to find the server
'{site_url}' on the local computer. Ensure that the local IIS is
configured to handle secure communications."
Which is pretty clear. Indeed, in my case, this was caused by my website https binding that just vanished for no reason (it happened to me several times, looks like a bug with Windows 11 & IIS 10). Things got fixed when I got my https binding back (projects could load norammly).
In VS 2022 to open a legacy web project I had to:
Remove from Solution
Change framework version from 4.6.x to <TargetFrameworkVersion>v4.7.2</TargetFrameworkVersion> in from csproj
Remove <OutputType>Library</OutputType> from csproj
Close Solution and open it again (!!!)
Add project to the sln again.
