Specs: React Native, xCode, iOS Simulator
I'm currently running xCode and just trying to start my hello world however despite numerous approaches I cannot get the dev menu in the iOS Simulator to open. The hotkey CMD + D will not work.
I have tried:
I checked and unchecked the simulator keyboard settings, “Connect
Hardware Keyboard”. Reference
I have tried “Reset Content and Settings” in the simulator menu.
Switching between scheme settings for the project. “Check your
scheme settings. The current scheme shows at the top of Xcode. Click
on it, then Edit Scheme. Under "Run", make sure the build
configuration is set to Debug. If it's set to something different,
you won't get the dev menu.” Reference
Restarting the simulator and restarting my mac.
Let's you try command + control + z
I also faced the same issue and after searching a lot I finally got a solution.
Create a fresh project by react-native init and see if it(dev menu) works or not? If it does, just upgrade the react-native version of your project. In my case, creating a fresh project worked.
I faced a similar issue when the default launch device as iPhone 11. But when I ran the command to run with iPhone 11 Pro developer menu came back. May be specific to a device on my machine.

I have update my xcode to 14.1 and macOS to Ventura 13.0.1.
When I run my app from xcode on a simulator iPhoneSE 3rd generation (iOS 16) it works fine a few times. After that xcode is unable to launch app on simulator.
The number of time I try to run it keep adding Launching [App Name] to process .
If I restart simulator it start working again but same thing happens after few runs.I also created new simulator and same thing happens to it as well.
Note: I'm facing same issue for different projects so I think it's not related to my project.
I was facing this issue on an M2 Macbook Air, every build would open the simulator the first time, but on a second run it would hang on a black screen during "Launching app." It turns out the "fix" was to disable "Open using Rosetta" (Applications > Xcode > Right click > Get Info) which I had turned on because of a third party dependency in a work project that didn't create a proper universal binary, which broke using the simulator on M1.
I think people updating to the new version are installing separately, which has the same effect of disabling the rosetta setting if they were using it already.
Somehow when I run npm run log:ios (react-native log-ios), I get the following error:
No active iOS device found
I have the simulator up and running with the app open.
Any idea why, or how can I start to investigate this issue?
PS: I recently installed Xcode 9.1-beta2 as I wanted to check something inherited from this upgrade. Not sure what role it would/could have played in this case.
The issue with react-native log-ios has not been resolved yet due to some other priorities. There is a simple workaround using Console.app. To open Console.app: ⌘ + space > type console, press enter.
Simulator log can also be seen under Debug > Open System Log

Open Safari, Go preferences -> advanced -> Show Develop menu in the menu bar. Once done, build and run in Xcode and then in safari go Develop -> iPhone Simulator -> Your App Name.
I have been building mac app on my mac mini and it always worked well but today i faced this error, searched a lot but no luck.
Message from debugger: unable to attach
What i tried:
Clear derived data
Quit Xcode
Restart machine
installation directory set to blank and also to /Applications
Tried Skip Install No / Yes
Using developer Signing certs
M using only Developer certificates and not provisioning profile to sign my cocoa app
Xcode 8.2
OSX 10.12.1

This is what fixed it for me, perhaps it will help others but I do realize the question was for 8.2. I had it set to Xcode 9 "New Build System" disabling this and switching to "Standard Build System" in the Project Settings under the File Menu. I had tried all the other things like killing DerivedData, clean build, restarting Xcode. I also verified that my dependent libraries were set correctly. The only thing that worked was disabling new "New Build System"
I just had this problem today. I have little demo code in a mac project(created with Xcode 9.4). This error just started to occur after I upgraded system to macOS Mojave 10.14. However, in Xcode 10 this project runs no problem(without changing anything). If you can use Xcode 10 it will probably be fixed.
Unfortunately, the above solutions didn't work for me (although I am sure they work for some people).
Here is what worked for me, in case this helps anyone else:
Close Xcode
Open Xcode and Create a new Xcode project
In the iOS template, select Single View App then click Next
yes, I know you are trying to get a macOS app attaching to the debugger :).
Give the iOS app any product name and organization identifier you would like and click Next
Create the new project anywhere you would like (I saved it to my desktop)
Build and run (cmd + r) the iOS app on a simulator like the iPhone 8 (starting a simulator and running the iOS app will take a little time, so have patients)
After the iOS app runs in the simulator, click to stop it from running (the stop button is next to the run button)
Open your macOS app that you are having trouble connecting a debugger to, and build and run it (cmd + r)
This, for some reason, allowed me to connect to the debugger with my macOS app...
Xcode version: 10.1, macOS Mojave version: 10.14.2
Using Xcode 5 GM, anytime I switch to the 5.1, 6.0 or 6.1 simulators to test, I get the error "iOS Simulator failed to install application." When I reset the simulator it works, but this is getting very tiring.
Anybody have a permanent fix or workaround?
Looks like this is a known issue. From the Xcode 5 release notes:
After switching the minimum deployment target of an application from
iOS 7.0 to a release prior to iOS 7.0, building and running the
application may fail with the message “iOS Simulator failed to install
the application.”
Go to the iOS home screen, click and hold the application icon, then tap the hovering “X” button to delete the application. 13917023
Another release note:
iOS Simulator
If an iOS app is detached, relaunching the same app from Xcode will
result in a black screen in the Simulator even though the new app is
launched. Terminate the app in the Simulator or relaunch it for the
second time. 14648784
Delete the old version app in your simulator (usually iOS 6.x).
Alternatively, header over to iOS Simulator - Reset Content and Settings.
This can be easier when you have a lot of apps on the simulator and can't remember which one you're currently working on.
You need to do this for every iOS Simulator version that causes the problem.
None of the other suggestions worked for me. However, after comparing my existing app settings to a new vanilla project, I noticed that the "Build" field for my Target was blank. Once I put something in that field, the app installed just fine!
if you have already developed project and you used xib to develop views then
X-Code > Inspector Selector Bar > Interface Builder Document > opens in > and change from Xcode Default(5.o) to Xcode 4.6 .
Build and Run your app it will run successfully, if it won't run again then, header over to iOS Simulator - Reset Content and Settings. delete old app from simulator then Run again.
i got the same problem but solved by following way....
Launch the iOS Simulator
Go and click "iOS Simulator" menu
Click "Reset content and settings"
Close simulator and rebuild your app.

just wanted to add that this happen only if I open xib that created in xcode 4.6

in my case nothing have worked for me , after resetting the content simulator also , i am not able to install the app on simulator . after that i just changed my project location . i just moved the project to other location . then it installed successfully.
None of the above things worked for me. I just reinstalled xcode and it worked.
Ran into this issue today. Found it was an empty Reference Folder (blue folder) causing this. Removed the folder from Resources in Build Phase... cleaned build folder for the heck of it, and it went away.
/Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Developer/Xcode/ --> remove all contents of this folder, then simply launch the app from Xcode.
To check your Executable file settng ex.$(EXECUTABLE_NAME)

I have different issue when getting error message “iOS Simulator failed to install application”, the reason is because I have added a property in App-Info.plist without any value. For instance, [Application Category] with no value. Thus the error will show up as well.
When I got this error, the image of the phone actually appeared, but the image of the app I wanted to test did not. Instead, I was on the main page of the phone that shows the apps you have. I fixed this problem by deleting the many icons that appeared on the start screens - about 30 of them. These had been created when I testing apps over the months. So, not saying its a solution, but it started working after I deleted the old app images.
For me it was -framework XCTest.
It made the app die with iOS Simulator failed to install application
and on the device Could not inspect the application package.
Removed it and now works.
You are using Xcode GM which is under beta stage. Use latest Xcode 5.1.1 available.
Also, these error occur while switching between simulator (32 bit and 64 bit).
Quit the simulator and re-build the application. OR
Reset simulator from "iOS simulator" -> "Reset content and settings.."
I changed my app name and bundle id midway. I happened to delete the Executable File name in my plist. I changed it back to "${EXECUTABLE_NAME}" (no quotes) and I'm back in business.
I upgraded my iPad device OS version recently to 5.1.1 (9B206). From that my Xcode is not detecting my device. Am just getting iOS Device and simulator options in my Xcode. But am getting my device in older version of Xcode and iTunes. For this i updated my MAC OS version to 10.7.4 and Xcode version to 4.3.3. But still am facing the same problem. Now how to make my Xcode to detect my device?
This Worked for me.
Quit Xcode.
Disconnect the device.
In a terminal window, type: sudo pkill usbmuxd (it will be restarted
again automatically)
Restart Xcode
Connect the device
Your device should now be visible again in Xcode!
Open the Organizer in Xcode, go to devices, find your device and click the option to use for development
I just plugged into another USB port and it detected by device.
In another case, check the "iOS Deployment Target" in "Build Settings",
if the target iOS version number is great than the version of device,
then the device will not show in the list.
Say that, the "iOS Deployment Target" == 7.0, and the version of device is 6.0,
to solve the problem by change the "iOS Deployment Target" to 6.0 or lower.
If the chosen answer still does not work for you try this:
Select the project in project explorer
Select the target on the main window
Select Build Settings
Select Deployment
Select iOS Deployment Target. Change it to the version of your device. (e.g. iOS 5.1)
I was also faced the same issue in Xcode, my device was not detected after update the Xcode latest version(7.3.1)
Done so many things what suggested in the web-search but still the device was not detected.
Finally, I just quit and open the Xcode my device was detected(oh my bad).

sudo killall -STOP -c usbd
did the magic.
Well later I had to unplug/plug in again at occasions, but that 'killall' really solved the original issue.
Most recently, Xcode 8.3 and iOS 10.3 seems to have more security around Xcode accessing the iPad/iPhone. My sequence:
Rebooted the machine,
Attached the iPad,
Gone through a "trust this computer" security cycle on both iMac and iPad
Xcode can now see the device
Sometimes restarting Xcode helps. Give it a shot.
In my case, restarting Mac worked and no other solution.
I updated my iPad (it's in Settings -> General -> Software Update, near the top) and restarted my computer and Xcode sees it now.
FWIW I tried all the tips in this thread and nothing would work: from reboots, command line statements, unplugging, different USBC ports, etc. I also tried something not mentioned here (yet) by going to "Settings > General > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy" ... however even this didn't work.
Later on in the evening I was in a different room of the house and out of nowhere I got the "Trust This Computer" prompt on my iPad. I of course tapped "Trust" or whatever and then magically my Mac laptop finally sees my iPad.
I realize I'm not really giving a helpful tip/fix here - just sharing how things went for me in case anyone finds useful.

Recently (2022) I've noticed that the iPad prompt to "Trust this Computer" won't appear unless using an Apple USB-C cable. Apple reps assure me they aren't doing any funny business here, but I have tried every cable I can find, including several thunderbolt 3 and 4 cables and Anker cables. Worth trying an Apple cable if still having problems.
Just simple, close the project on your XCode. Just right-click on the XCode in the taskbar and give a quit option. After open the XCode from the directory, it will detect your device. It also work on Xcode version 11.2.1
close your project or XCode.
Give Right click on the Xcode in MAC tabbar and give the Quit option.
Reopen the project from your finder(project place).
The device will be automatically detected.
Open the Windows in Xcode, go to devices. If Device is visible in Left side, Right click and select "Show in Destination Menu".
