Getting a MS build fatal error during Visual Studio Install - visual-studio

I tried to install Visual Community and it hung so I uninstalled what components were out there and re-installed. Now I am getting this error: Installed could not continue because required component failed. Any help is appreciated. I did reboot and re-installed and still get the message. Thx. This is my log:

I had the same problem as you, especially with the last message
"Error writing to file: Microsoft.Build.Conversion.Core.dll. Verify that you have access to that directory."
The error message is completely wrong and misleading.
The real cause is a missing installation of Microsoft .NET 4.5.2
which you can download from
https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=42642
After I downloaded and installed that (choose the language you need, of course),
installation completed.

I find out the error was caused by privman64.dll[from power broker windows client] certificate is un-trusted by virtual box because the installed version privman64 certificate is valid only 2012-2015.
Unfortunately i could not uninstall power broker software,
So i updated new version which have valid certificate, then issue gone.
Otherwise downgrade virtual box to V 4.1.12 then issue not occurs.

Breaking when LastError changes

Is there a way to break windbg or visual studio debugger execution when the value of LastError value changes?
Edit:
Found a way by setting a breakpoint in ntdll!RtlSetLastWin32Error.
Does anyone know another way or it's the best way for that?
set a write breakpoint on the address of teb->LastErrorValue
ba w4 ##c++(&(#$thread->LastErrorValue))
happy breaking whenever error value changes
you can add conditions to the bp to break only when you want too
0:000> ba w4 ##c++(&(#$thread->LastErrorValue)) "!gle;gc"
breakpoint 0 redefined
0:000> g

How to fix WixCloseApplications: Error 0x8007064f: failed to open view on database?

I am new to Wix. While installing a msi, I would like to use the util:CloseApplication to detect if notepad.exe is running. My simple code.
<Wix xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/wix/2006/wi"
xmlns:util="http://schemas.microsoft.com/wix/UtilExtension">
<util:CloseApplication CloseMessage="no" Target="notepad.exe" RebootPrompt="no"/>
<InstallExecuteSequence>
<Custom Action="WixCloseApplications" After="InstallInitialize"/>
</InstallExecuteSequence>
Failed to in both Wix 3.10 and 3.11 toolsets. Any suggestion?
Have also tried to execute the WixCloseApplications Before="InstallValidate". Same result.

I think I have found out the root cause of the problem I experienced.
If I put the complete ClosApplication codes inside a <Fragment></Fragment>, the whole fragment of code is skipped (simply due to lack of reference).
<Fragment>
<util:CloseApplication ID="StopNotepad" CloseMessage="no" Target="notepad.exe" RebootPrompt="no"/>
<InstallExecuteSequence>
<Custom Action="WixCloseApplications" After="InstallInitialize"/>
</InstallExecuteSequence>
</Fragment>
The problem I saw earlier was slightly different. My fragment just contain this
<Fragment>
<util:CloseApplication ID="StopNotepad" CloseMessage="no" Target="notepad.exe" RebootPrompt="no"/>
</Fragment>
The required custom action was included via an external wxi file. The final msi contains the call to custom action but missing the Util:CloseApplication declaration. As a result, the msi failed to deploy and I saw the weird log entry stating WixCloseApplications: Error 0x8007064f: failed to open view on database
Solution:
By moving the <util:CloseApplication fragment code inside the <Product><\Product> or other existing <Fragment> that has a reference to the outside world. For example, Directory Id=etc will resolve the problem.
Unless there is a way to include <util:CloseApplication reference (that I am not aware of), don't put the <util:CloseApplication code in its own fragment!

Refer to the error message “Error Message Id: 1606 ErrorMessage: Could not access network location \psf\Home\Desktop\”, you can have a look at this similar issue with the same error message and try with following workaround:
Hale: I solved by running the vm in parallels isolation mode, rebooting then running the vs install again.
Anystone: This fixed it for me - re-installed Win 10 preview and ensured that the Parallels settings were such that it wasn't mapping the user directories (music/documents/downloads/desktop etc to the Mac side). I then installed it from the ISO no problem.
This issue is about the Paralles, you can also check this related error issue.
