Visual studio for Mac missing Toolbox items - macos

Hi I've just installed Visual Studio for Mac. I've created a new solution/project (ASP.NET Core Empty Web Application), but for some reason I'm missing drag/drop items from the Toolbox. Any suggestions why its empty?
Thanks :)

Happened to me too. I installed the latest updates, closed VS and re-opened it. Suddenly the tools were there.

Now there are just small icon that says nothing useful. I've tried to reinstall vs but without any success. It happened with Unity solution but it doesn't seem issue has something to do with Unity, since I've also checked it by creating new solution as a "console application" with the same result.
I've tried to update/reinstall Visual Studio.
Visual Studio community 8.10.25(build2). Mac OS Ventura 13.0.1
I've managed to solve it by downloading installer of vs directly from the site, without Unity Hub. It installs non "community" version of vs instead of what hub does.

Visual Studio 2017 15.7 Preview 2 Hangs While Opening Solution

I've been using Visual Studio 2017 15.7 Preview 2 since it was released -- and Preview 1 prior to that. My experience has been pretty good with it.
All of a sudden today, I just can't get into my project any more. When I click the solution open, I get the "Preparing Solution" message and it just hangs there.
If I try clicking anything in Visual Studio, I get the following message but it doesn't really solve anything.
Anyone else is having this issue? Any idea how to fix it? I just can't work on my project because of this issue.
P.S. I've been using the preview version because I wanted to work in ASP.NET Core 2.1 which requires the preview version of Visual Studio 2017.
Found the answer here. In my case, deleting the .vs folder fixed the issue.

How can I fix PreEmptive Dotfuscator (VS2013)?

I have Visual Studio 2013 which included "PreEmptive Dotfuscator and Analytics".
It's always worked fine for me until recently.
Suddenly it will not open from Visual Studio, icon or commandline.
Even when I manually open it, it does not show up in the task manager.
It simply does nothing.
There's nothing in the Event Viewer logs.
Visual Studio shows no error.
Basically, I can't even begin to find the problem.
I tried to find a download to attempt to reinstall it but all I've seen on the website for this version is that it's included in VS2013.
There's other sites in search results which claim to have the installer but none I trust.
Has anyone had this issue in the past?
It's Visual Studio 2013 Professional on Windows 8.1.
I'm not sure how to address this so I would greatly appreciate any possible input.
Thanks in advance!
You can try uninstalling, wiping the settings, and reinstalling. Dotfuscator Community Edition is uninstallable via the Windows control panel. Once uninstalled, delete %LOCALAPPDATA%\PreEmptive Solutions. You may be able to reinstall it as a component via the Visual Studio installer. If not, it is actually a standalone installer, so if you have a Visual Studio disc or .iso, it will be in \packages\Dotfuscator.

Install Xamarin on Visual Studio 2015 with Xamarin on Visual Studio 2013 already installed

I have Xamarin installed on the Visual Studio 2013 on Windows Operating System. It works fine.
There is Xamarin tools in VS2013 as follows:
My problem is as follows:
I have recently installed Visual Studio 2015 on my desktop on Windows operating system. I thought when I opened the VS2015, I expected to see the Xamarin in it, but it does not. Then I installed the Xamarin again, and again and again, but still Xamarin does not show up in VS2015.
I wonder what is wrong? What am I missing?
By the way, I still have VS2013 on my desktop.
No Xamarin tools in VS 2015 as follows:
I even tried the following approach, still no luck.
Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features Choose Xamarin
Click Change -> Next -> Click the desired drop down for each items in the tree view and select "Will be installed on local hard drive."
Click Next
I am even getting the following screen when installation is completed, but still I could not able to see Xamarin in VS2015.
I have installed Xamarin in my Visual Studio 2015 two days ago and it showing Xamarin under Tools. Below I have described the approach which I have followed to install Xamarin in Visual Studio 2015.
Go to Contol Panel >> Program Features >> Visual Studio
2015 >> Change>> Modify
1. Select C#/.Net(Xamarin) under Cross Platform Mobile Development
2. Check if these three red marked items are checked or not.
3. And then press update. It will download all the required packages to run Xamarin on VS 2015.Hope it helps you!!
I recently had horrendous problems trying to install Xamarin on VS2015 + Win10. (I don't have any other VS versions installed.) Even a full install and reinstall left huge holes in the installation. I tried repeatedly and each time the whole dev environment seemed to get itself in a different unusable state.
The fix for me, which is probably hitting a nut with a sledgehammer, was to:
Uninstall Xamarin (via Control Panel|Uninstall).
Uninstall Visual Studio (via Control Panel|Uninstall).
Follow Xamarin's manual uninstallation procedures Full Xamarin Uninstall.
Perform full reinstall of Visual Studio, being sure to tick the boxes shown in the answer by Parth Patel above.
This resulted in a faultless, fully functioning Xamarin environment for me. Overkill, maybe, but worth a go if all else fails.
Here is the solution:
I have deleted all the existing versions of visual studio ( 2010, 2012, 2013) except Visual Studio 2015 and then installed the Xamarin, and then I could able to see Xamarin on Visual Studio 2015.
It is not required to delete previous versions of VS. I have Xamarin Studio, VS 2013 and now VS 2015 and working perfectly. I moved to VS 2015 due to recent purchase of Xamarin by MS and that VS 2015 has Xamarin included.
I believe the issue with this question is was that your VS 2015 install did not include the add ins as pointed out in another answer in this question.
After the VS 2015 install -the only caveat was projects created initially in Xaramin Studio and then Opened in VS 2015 to needed to have the build configuration in the project tweaked. If not you could not get the project to build and then be deployed to an emulator or device for debug testing.
We have a few troubleshooting steps on our Knowledge Base that you can find here:
https://kb.xamarin.com/customer/en/portal/articles/1643349-missing-visual-studio-extensions-after-installation
Note: Some of these steps have older versions listed in the respective paths. You should use the latest version number available.
Before any install or uninstall actions. Try open some sample Xamarin project, in most cases during opening project in VS 15, it will show you, what needs to be installed or what is missing / corrupted.
Xamarin samples
I had some problems with my emulator best way to fix the problems is to uninstall everything (emulators, android sdk, vs, xamarin) and reinstall it.
It is also important to delete other or older versions of visual studio. Then you should probably see you options.
First try to uninstall all the other versions of Visual Studio (VS) 2013 in this case. Then try to reinstall Xamarin.
Visual Studio 2015 is little bit different from 2013 version, I am also using xamarin on visual studio 2015. But that is not listed under tools menu like 2013.
Maybe developers had changed that, you can go to "start a new project"(just like you start new app development), there you can find xamarin/android projects list, there you can start new android projects.
This is strange, I did not have any problem with Xamarin & VS 2015 (community).
You said,
I will see the Xamarin in it
Did you try to create a project or/and add your account in the new VS Installation ?

Visual Studio thinks `Microsoft Web Developer Tools` is installed

Symptoms
Visual Studio syntax highlighter and Intellisense for Javascript and Razor views are not working.
There is no Web templates installed when creating a new project.
When I try to uninstall the web developer feature:
Add or remove Programs > Microsoft Visual Studio Professional 2015 > Modify
Microsoft Web Developer Tools is always checked. Even when I uncheck it and uninstall it, then restart the computer; the next time I still see it's checked:
What I did to solve this:
Running devenv.exe \resetuserdata Command to reset the user data.
Running devenv.exe \installtemplates to install the templates.
Repairing the Visual Studio.
Trying to uninstall and re-install the Web Developer Tools feature through the Visual Studio installer.
None have worked so far.
What I guess
I think Visual Studio thinks this feature is installed (through some registry keys probably) but the files are actually not installed.
Because whenever I try to Modify the installation of Visual Studio, the Microsof Web Developer Tools check box is not checked for the first second, then it is checked again after 1 second.
Question
Any suggestion on fixing this without uninstalling Visual Studio itself?
I was having the same problem and this is what worked for me:
Uninstall ASP.NET Web Tools from Control Panel
Download and install "Microsoft ASP.NET and Web Tools" extension from: https://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/c94a02e9-f2e9-4bad-a952-a63a967e3935
Try this (in order):
Find Microsoft ASP.NET 5 RC1 ... in control panel / programs &
select modify
Select repair
Run devenv.exe /installvstemplates as administrator
Run VS as administrator
I had the same problem with Visual Studio 2015. I tried several things, but simply updating Microsoft ASP.NET seemed to do the trick.
Install ASP.NET 5 RC1, restart, and the issue should be resolved.
I didn't know I had this problem until I opened an MVC project with Razor views and didn't have syntax highlighter and Intellisense. I was lucky to read your question because the symptoms are the same and so is the conclusion. And unfortunately none of the answers solves the problem. But it did help me to find the answer, or what worked for me.
What did the trick was installing .NET Core 1.0.0 (DotNetCore.1.0.0.RC2-Runtime-x64 and DotNetCore.1.0.0.RC2-VS2015Tools.Preview1). I am pretty sure that this is enough to solve the issue. But since I tried all kinds of things, it is possible that another action is required. In that case, continue reading below the images.
When I start a new project this opens the following dialog:
Selecting ASP.NET Web Application (.NET Framework) opens the dialog with the projects I was looking for.
The syntax highlighter and Intellisense are also working for Razor views.
I do not know what caused the problem in the first place. Is the installation incomplete, is there a conflict with other software or did I do something that caused this?
Visual Studio 2012 is installed on my machine as well. I installed and uninstalled VS2015 (pro and community version) and then installed vs2015 Community on multiple volumes. On uninstalling I did use /Force and removed several folders manually.
Microsoft ASP.NET 5 RC Update 1 is also installed, but repairing this did not solve the issue. Also installing Asp.Net Web Framework tools 2015 didn't change anything. I copied templates to all template folders I could find (perhaps an issue with installing on multiple volumes?), ran devenv.exe with different parameters and deleted the '14' folder in my profile. None of this worked. Finally I installed .NET Core 1.0.0.
