Classic ASP code opens in Visual Studio 2012 but not 2015 - visual-studio

I'm trying to migrate from VS2012 to VS2015. I have a need to edit Classic ASP code.
The code opens just fine in VS2012. It will not open in VS2015. Or, more accurately, when I open it in VS2015, I don't see any code; all I see is a tab with the file name and a big blank blue field where the code should be.
What do I need to set in order to view it? I can't seem to find this anywhere.
Thanks in advance...

have you tried reinstalling VS? I'm running VS2017 without any problems, having just upgraded from VS2015, which I ran without issues as well. I'd try a reinstall and see if that resolves the problem.

'VSPackage' package did not load correctly

I'm having this error pop up once I start Visual Studio professional 2013 with update 3.
I don't know whats going on and also when I created a web form and try to put items from the toolbox into a table in my code it doesn't let me. the items are dim and can't select them any more. before I would make a table and try to add Labels, textbox, etc and it wasn't a problem.
Visual Studio 2013 Update 4
Tools -> Extensions and Updates
Disabled "Release Management for Visual Studio 2013 v2.1".
That worked for me.
I got the same issue today, but the error message should be giving you some guidance.
Take a look at mine, it tells me to check the "ActivityLog.xml" for more information.
After looking at the entry my error showed me that it ocured the evening before around 5:30pm and I know I was installing the Visual Studio 2013 Update 4 at this time. So it seems I had a problem with my Update installation.
(Sorry maybe someone can school me on how to properly load an image for viewing)
So I realized my problem was an install issue I created, yours might be an add-on or something similar that you just updated your Visual Studio with that corrupted your VS.
So a little more researching and asking some buddies at work and we tried doing this step in another SO article, which should have the same effect of fixing our package loading problem also.
the Provider package did not load.
After running the steps listed there my Visual Studio started up without any obvious issue.
Hope this helps.
Open ActivityLog.xml in a viewer (I've used Microsoft Edge) and you'll find the error. VSPackage is the "Developer Analytics Tools" extension for me.
The error is gone after uninstalling that package. You can obtain the package and attempt to reinstall from the Developer Analytics Tools page in the Visual Studio Gallery.
I uninstalled and reinstalled Visual Studio and the problem went away for a little bit. It eventually came back complaining about different packages.
Then I noticed my home directory was encrypted. I decrypted the directory and the problem went away.
If it is not an encryption issue, I'd try just uninstalling and reinstalling VS 2013.
Message could be shown in case of "Path" environment variable longer than 2048 characters. In that case, system doesn't work proply with system paths like %windir%.
If it's your case, shorten "Path" environment variable and everything works again.

the service microsoft.visualstudio.shell.interop.iselectioncontainer already exists in the service container

I recently installed Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate version on my machine. I'm just trying to create a sample windows form project and trying to open the designer / form by double clicking on Form1.cs and I'm getting this weird error message:
"the service microsoft.visualstudio.shell.interop.iselectioncontainer already exists in the service container"
My system is already having Visual Studio 2010 which is working smoothly from a long time. I then installed Visual Studio 2012 which was giving the same problem as above. So I went ahead with installing VS 2013 hoping that I might be able to get rid of this issue, but no use.
Once I click OK on the error windows, I can see the following "message" in the bottom Error List window:
"The file 'C:\Users\ABCD\Documents\Visual Studio 2013\Projects\WebSite1\WindowsFormsApplication1\Form1.cs' does not support code parsing or generation because it is not contained within a project that supports code."
I have spent 2-3 days searching various blogs like these, all of which talk about previous version of Visual Studio like VS 2005 / VS 2008:
https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/311949/the-service-microsoft-visualstudio-shell-interop-iselectioncontainer-already-exists-in-the-service-container
Form inheritance in Visual Studio 2008 doesn't work
I have even tried uninstalling and reinstalling VS 2013, again no use.
It would be really great if someone can help me out in fixing this.
I've just had the exact same error message.
After compiling the solution(F6 or Build->Build Solution) it worked fine for me.
To deal with your issue, please first make sure that you installed latest updates on your Windows 8 machine, and then repair VS2013.
During your repairing process, please temporally turn off your anti-virus/antispyware software and repair VS2013 with the Administrator privilege.

The problem got resolved finally, after so many days and various frustrating tries to resolve the issue. I should thank Tim Atkins from Microsoft for helping me with resolving this issue.
Fix: When we tried 'gacutil /l system.design', we found that there were 3 variants of system.design; One from .Net 2.0 targetting MSIL, second from .Net 4.0 targetting x86 and last one also from .Net 4.0, but targetting MSIL.
On a working machine, there were only 2 entries, the .Net 4.0 one targetting x86 wasn't there. Hence we uninstalled this version using gacutil which did the magic. I was so relieved seeing the win forms popping up without any errors anymore :)
I changed the target framework from 4.5 to 4.6.1 and it fixed it for me. My assumption is sometimes when you change target framework back and forth and the process does not go through all the way (cancelling in the middle of changing it) - something happens that leads to this error. Hope that helps
I solved this be closing VS, deleting contents of the .vs folder where my solution is, restarting VS and recompiling.
Seems like one of those file/settings/caching problems that pop up now and then, might be after switching source branch.
VS2019, .net fw 4.6.2.
If your C drive (Where you are installing Visual Studio) does not have enough space, try moving some files from the C drive to another drives.

VS2013 Javascript Debugging

Does any one know how to enable in page JavaScript script tag debugging?
In vs2012 i can go to the page in visual studio which is running in the debugger and create a break point however in vs2013 i get "A breakpoint could not be inserted at this location"?
Thanks
try to keep your scripts in separate files and put the breakpoints in that files. I had the same problem but when I moved java scripts from my views to script files I was able to debug. It may not be a solution but at least you should be able to work.
There was a known issue in Visual Studio 2013 that caused breakpoints to not work correctly inside script blocks. A fix was made and is included in the recently released Visual Studio 2013 Update 2 RC, which you can install from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42307.

Visual Studio 2010 SP1 crashes when opening web page

As the title says, my Visual Studio 2010 SP1, running on Windows 7 x64, is crashing whenever I try to open a .html, .aspx, .cshtml, etc. file. I noticed this problem some weeks ago. Since then, when I open one of these kinds of files, it opens, freezes for a few seconds and then crashes. I tried using the repair function provided with the installer, but it didn't work. The only solution right now is to reinstall the os, but I don't feel like doing such thing.
Has anyone else encountered this kind of problem? Thank you!
I've been having this problem when using the default Web Form Editor and still haven't found a solution that works. I haven't a clue what's causing it, and the only plugin I have is Resharper.
I solved it temporarily by right-clicking the ASPX file, clicking Open with and choosing HTML Editor as the Default editor. Seems to be a problem with the Web Form Editor for a certain kind of files.

DataTable visualizer disappeared from my Visual Studio

A while ago I noticed I don't have a magnifying-glass next to my datatables. I used to have it, and somehow, sometime, it disappeared...
Has anyone seen this happen? Do you know how to help me view my datatables again?
Update: I'm still clueless about this. Could anyone point me in some direction, where should I even start looking for an answer? Thanks a lot.
Update: I changed to a new computer, and still the same problem. But I pinpointed it to being only in Visual Studio 2005. On Visual Studio 2008 I have perfectly normal DataSet and Datatable visualizers.
So I tried re-installing VS2005, to make sure all the components were installed, nothing left out - but Nada. Still no visualizer.
Update: Found the solution to my problem: My answer
I was really bothered by the problem, so I turned to Microsoft support, and they solved my problem! The short solution is that apparently one of the DLL's in the My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Visualizers folder was corrupted. I deleted all the contents of the folder, and the visualizer came back.
The long answer can be found in this post written by Faruk Celik - the person from Microsoft who solved my problem.
Create a new clean project, does the Visualizer show up there?
Check if this file exist: "\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8.0\Common7\Packages\Debugger\Visualizers\Microsoft.VisualStudio.Debugger.DataSetVisualizer.dll"
Check if the dll is loaded in Visual Studio, Open your project, then open anther Visual Studio, attach the debugger into the first Visual Studio (Make sure that managed debugger is selected). Inside the debugging Visual Studio open Debug/Windows/Modules to see if the DataSetVisualizer is loaded.
try devenv /ResetSettings from an admin console.
I know this is an old post, but I have been fighting this same issue. Nothing solved my problem... I finally figured out that I had been running Visual Studio in compatibility mode (Windows 7 os). Once I ran devenv.exe without compatibility mode set, the visualizers showed up again.
Give devenv /resetskippkgs a try...
I am using Visual Studio 2017 and I had the same issue. I realised the visualizers folder is missing in my documents. I think this is something to do with the recent windows upgrade on the office computer. I have resolved it by creating an empty Visualizers folder.
I have the same problem and it drives me crazy. Finally, I have it works after trying many advice from Googling and trail and error.
\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe /resetuserdata at the command prompt.
I rename Microsoft.VisualStudio.Debugger.DataSetVisualizer.dll to Microsoft.VisualStudio.Debugger.DataSetVisualizer.dll.test on both
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\PublicAssemblies
And
\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Visualizers
I was having the same problem, nothing would appear when I hovered over my dataset variable. I was finally able to see the dataset visualizer when I added my.forms in front of my dataset variable in the Watch window
Execute Visual Studio as administrator. Right click and execute as administrator and the magnifying-glass appears next to datatables.
I tried everything in this post but nothing worked for me. I am running Windows 7 64-bit. Eventually I was able to find a solution in this post
I tried everything here but the only thing that worked for me was to overlay 2 folder using someone else VS 2019 that had the visualizers working.
C:\Users\XXXXXXXX\Documents\Visual Studio 2019\Visualizers --< XXXXXXXX = the user folder
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2019\Professional\Common7\Packages\Debugger\Visualizers
