I am using kafka + spark streaming to stream messages and do analytics, then saving to phoenix. Some spark job fail several times per day with the following error message:

You are trying to process dirty data.
That error comes from here:
https://github.com/apache/phoenix/blob/master/phoenix-core/src/main/java/org/apache/phoenix/util/DateUtil.java#L301
Where it's trying to parse some string that is expected to be a Date in ISO format and the provided String is empty ("").
You need to prepare+clean your data before attempting to write it to storage.

The problem occurs only when I run it on more than one machine, so it works fine on EMR cluster with master and 1 instance in core group, but fails like that with 10 instances in core group
This turned out to be problem within Magellan WholeFileReader. It was getting default FileSystem.
It was solved with this pull request
The solutions was like so:
- val fs = FileSystem.get(conf)
+ val fs = path.getFileSystem(conf)
If you are running on EMR, you can just use "s3://bucket/path" instead of "s3n://...."

Spark Streaming with large messages java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space

I am using Spark Streaming 1.6.1 with Kafka0.9.0.1 (createStreams API) HDP 2.4.2, My use case sends large messages to Kafka Topics ranges from 5MB to 30 MB in such cases Spark Streaming fails to complete its job and crashes with below exception.I am doing a dataframe operation and saving on HDFS in csv format, below is my code snippet

I have used Snappy and Zlib with the same command and it is working fine. But problem is only with LZ4. I do not know the reason why?
The compression we can use in addition to ORC columnar compression is either of one of NONE, ZLIB, SNAPPY.
The default compression codec is ZLIB.
The compression codecs other than above are not allowed.
In general to get an idea about error, read the error log completely to find the issue to some extent. The error log said -
"org.apache.hadoop.hive.ql.metadata.HiveException: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: No enum constant org.apache.hadoop.hive.ql.io.orc.CompressionKind.Lz4"
Now you can manually substitute the jar file for lz4 on official spark repo.

Error Invalid format: [ISO8601] when indexing logs in ElasticSearch

I see an exception when I try to index my logs into ElasticSearch (1.3.4). The root cause of the exception I see is the following (edited my initial post to provide the full stacktrace)

I am using logstash (1.4.2) to send my logs to ElasticSearch. My grok filter is pretty simple and is as follows. I am keeping the timestamp as a string "logts".

match => [ "message", "%{DATA:logts}%{SPACE}\[%{LOGLEVEL:level}%{SPACE}]%{SPACE}\[%{DATA:thread}]%{SPACE}\[%{DATA:classname}]%{SPACE}%{GREEDYDATA:details}" ]

A sample line from my log file is:
2015-01-09 14:53:07,035-0800 [ERROR] [pool-1-thread-2] [LogGenerator] invocation count=101,time=95840107816543,metric=6688916707300087716
I ran logstash with '-vv' flag and I don't see any "[ISO8601]" in the output.
Does anyone know where the invalid format is being introduced?

I deleted my Elasticsearch installation (this was a test environment) and reinstalled and this started working again.
I suspect if I had deleted my index it would have solved the problem as well.
