Spring's persistence exception translation not working with Hibernate 5 - spring

I am using Spring 4.3.10 and Hibernate 5.2.10 (I've migrated from Hibernate 4 since which moment got into below problem). The following post-processor is declared in order to take advantage of Spring's translation of Hibernate exceptions in my #Repository-marked service.
#Bean
public PersistenceExceptionTranslationPostProcessor persistenceExceptionTranslationPostProcessor() {
return new PersistenceExceptionTranslationPostProcessor();
}
My code violates a DB constraint, so Hibernate will throw a org.hibernate.exception.ConstraintViolationException which I expect to translate into Spring's generic org.springframework.dao.DataIntegrityViolationException. However, what was working in Hibernate 4 does not in 5.
As I see from the source code, Hibernate 5 uses internally its ExceptionConverter which wraps the ConstraintViolationException with a JPA's javax.persistence.PersistenceException. Here's how Spring's LocalSessionFactoryBean's translateExceptionIfPossible() (inherited from HibernateExceptionTranslator) looks like:
#Override
public DataAccessException translateExceptionIfPossible(RuntimeException ex) {
if (ex instanceof HibernateException) {
return convertHibernateAccessException((HibernateException) ex);
}
return null;
}
An instance of PersistenceException instead of a bare Hibernate exception comes here, so translation won't happen.
I still admit the problem is mine as I couldn't find anyone facing this problem with such a popular usage. Any Ideas? Thanks!

It was a configuration issue. The problem was in spring-orm library which was of version 4.3.1 while the rest of Spring components were of 4.3.10. In the newer version, HibernateExceptionTranslator.translateExceptionIfPossible() looks upgraded:
#Override
public DataAccessException translateExceptionIfPossible(RuntimeException ex) {
if (ex instanceof HibernateException) {
return convertHibernateAccessException((HibernateException) ex);
}
if (ex instanceof PersistenceException) {
if (ex.getCause() instanceof HibernateException) {
// this is my case!
return convertHibernateAccessException((HibernateException) ex.getCause());
}
return EntityManagerFactoryUtils.convertJpaAccessExceptionIfPossible(ex);
}
return null;
}
Now it works as expected.

How to configure the ObjectMapper for Unirest in a spring boot project

I am using Unirest in a project which is working fine for me. However, I want to post some data and do not want to escape all the JSON as it looks ugly and is just a pain in the neck.
I found a few links on how to configure the ObjectMapper for Unirest and it gives this code.
Unirest.setObjectMapper(new ObjectMapper() {
com.fasterxml.jackson.databind.ObjectMapper mapper =
new com.fasterxml.jackson.databind.ObjectMapper();
public String writeValue(Object value) {
try {
return mapper.writeValueAsString(value);
} catch (JsonProcessingException e) {
throw new RuntimeException(e);
}
}
public <T> T readValue(String value, Class<T> valueType) {
try {
return mapper.readValue(value, valueType);
} catch (Exception e) {
throw new RuntimeException(e);
}
}
});
But, no examples show where it is best to do this in a Spring Boot API project.
I tried to set it up in the main class method, but I am getting an error that 'setObjectMapper' cannot be resolved. I also tried to do this in the controller but I get the same error.
My Gradle deps for these two libraries are:
// https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/com.mashape.unirest/unirest-java
compile group: 'com.mashape.unirest', name: 'unirest-java', version: '1.4.5'
compile 'com.fasterxml.jackson.core:jackson-databind:2.10.1'
Can anyone show me how to use the Jackson object mapper with Unirest in a Spring Boot API project as I have been googling and reading docs for two days now. Would appreciate some help.
Thank you in advance
You have several issues here:
The version of unirest you're using (1.4.5) does not contain the feature to configure object mapper. This feature was added later (github PR). So you should update to the latest version available at maven central - 1.4.9. This alone will fix your compilation problem.
You can keep your Unirest configuration code in the main method. However if you want to use not default jackson ObjectMapper(), but the one from the spring context, then it's better to create something like a fake spring bean to inject ObjectMapper:
#Configuration
public class UnirestConfig {
#Autowired
private com.fasterxml.jackson.databind.ObjectMapper mapper;
#PostConstruct
public void postConstruct() {
Unirest.setObjectMapper(new ObjectMapper() {
public String writeValue(Object value) {
try {
return mapper.writeValueAsString(value);
} catch (JsonProcessingException e) {
throw new RuntimeException(e);
}
}
public <T> T readValue(String value, Class<T> valueType) {
try {
return mapper.readValue(value, valueType);
} catch (Exception e) {
throw new RuntimeException(e);
}
}
});
}
}
Other than that it looks this library changed the package name. Now it's com.konghq. You might want to consider updating, but library API might have changed.
Upd: for the latest version
compile group: 'com.konghq', name: 'unirest-java', version: '3.1.04'
the new API is Unirest.config().setObjectMapper(...)

Spring Boot logging - Don't log ConstraintViolationExceptions

Here's my problem. I call a service method in the controller which is annotated with #Transactional. If this is comitted, a ConstraintViolationException occurs. I would like to catch it and put it into my own exception. Now I have the problem that I can catch the TransactionSystemException, but an error has already been logged. Can I prevent this somehow?
public ResponseEntity<T> update(String id, T obj) {
try {
return getResponseEntity(service.update(id, obj));
} catch (TransactionSystemException ex) {
System.out.println("CATCHED");
throw new InternalErrorException();
}
}
During my research I found out that I can disable logging for certain packages like
logging.level.org.springframework.dao.DataIntegrityViolationException=OFF
or
logging.level.org.hibernate.TransactionException=OFF
But that didn't help and I don't want to disable logging completely with logging.level.org.hibernate=OFF.
Please try to use #ControllerAdvice.

Spring #transactional with #async Timeout value is not working

I have created an asynchronous service for a long running stored procedure call. Things work good but the transaction is not getting timed out after the specified value given in the timeout attribute of the transactional annotation..The structure of the code is given below (not the real one...just skeleton...ignore semantics/syntax)
//asynchronous service
#override
#async("myCustomTaskExecutor")
#Transactional(rollbackfor=Exception.class,timeout=600)
public void serviceMethod(){
//repository method is invoked.
repository.callStoredProcedure();
}
//Repository method in the Repository class
#Transactional(rollbackfor=Exception.class,timeout=600)
public void callStoredProcedure(){
//Stored procedure is called from the private method using hibernate doWork implementation.
privateCallmethod();
}
private void privateCallmethod() throws ApplicationException{
Session session = null;
try{
session = entityManager.unwrap(Session.class);
session.doWork(new Work(){
#Override
public void execute(Connection connection) throws SQLException {
OracleCallableStatement statement =null;
try{
//using hibernate 4.x and ref cursors are used...so went on with this approach..
//suggest if there is some better approach.
String sqlString =“{begin storProcName(?,?)}”;
statement = connection.prepareCall(sqlString);
statement.setInt(1,5);
statement.setString(2,“userName5”);
statement.executeUpdate();
}
catch(Exception e){
throw RunTimeException(e.getMessage);
}
finally{
if(statement != null)
statement.close();
}
}
}
});
}
catch(Exception e){
throw ApplicationException(e.getMessage);
}
//Not using Final block to close the session.Is it an issue ?
}
delay is happening in the stored procedure side(Thread.sleep(700) are not used) yet transaction is not timed out...
Questions :
I guess #Transactional is enough on the service method alone...give little bit insight on correct approach of using #Transactional annotation
for this code setup.
Will the #Transactional works for the JDBC calls inside the doWork Interface implementation...is that whats the issue is ?
Some article suggest to use oracle.jdbc.readTimeout or setQueryTimeout in the CallableStatement... Is it the right way to achieve this.
Kindly point out the mistakes and explain the causes
If #Transactional Annotated method is not the entry point to the class, it will not be transactional unless you enable load time weaving (Spring default is Compile time weaving) https://stackoverflow.com/a/17698587/6785908
You should invoke callStoredProcedure() from outside this class, then it will be transactional. If you invoke serviceMethod() which in turn invokes callStoredProcedure(), then it will not be transactional
I used setQueryTimeout() approach to resolve the issue as #Transactional timeout does not work with the hibernate dowork() method...I guess its due to the hibernate work executes in different thread and it low level JDBC methods to invoke the store procedures...
NOTE: This particular application uses very spring 3.x version and hibernate 4.x with JPA 2.0 spec...little outdated versions

Spring Beans constructed multiple times?

I am teaching myself how to use REST Assured and Spring right now. I am running into a few problems with the Spring Beans. Below is the System.println output from the REST Assured gets every time a bean is created. As of now, it should actually only be created once per use of the beans (I would imagine or at least that's what I want).
Top of Cucumber Steps
private BasicApi guideBox;
private ApplicationContext context = new AnnotationConfigApplicationContext(BaseApiConfig.class);
It is important to note here that the Application Context is used in each scenario to give guideBox what it needs for each scenario.
The output below is currently generated for each cucumber scenario indicating that the 3 beans I am currently using are created and initialized before each scenario is run. This output occurs three times meaning the beans are created three times; once before each of the three scenarios. As you can see from the first result giving an error for too many API requests, this is all happening too fast and too often. Is there a way to stop bean creation until that specific bean is needed, or is every bean going to be created every time? Is there a way to create all the beans just one time instead of before every scenario?
Output During Each Scenario
{"error":"You are sending API requests too quickly. You are limited to 1 API request per second. Please refer to the API docs for more information."}

#Given("^that the database contains \"([^\"]*)\"$")
public void that_the_database_contains(String title)
{
showTitle = title;
try
{
guideBox = (BasicApi) context.getBean("provideArrestedDevleopmentSearch");
}
catch (Exception e)
{
guideBox.basicHandle("Init Error: ", e);
}
}
#When("^the client requests a database search for Arrested Development$")
public void the_client_requests_a_database_search_for_Arrested_Development()
{
try {
guideBox.searchJson("results.title");
}
catch (Exception e)
{
guideBox.basicHandle("Json Search Error: ", e);
}
}
#Then("^the title should be visible in the search results$")
public void the_title_should_be_visible_in_the_search_results()
{
try
{
Assert.assertThat(guideBox.getJsonResults(), CoreMatchers.containsString(showTitle));
}
catch(Exception e)
{
guideBox.basicHandle("Assertion Error: ", e);
}
}
UPDATE 1
I managed to fix the problem in a general sense. I made the BasicApi parameterized constructor less busy, resulting in a bit more code in the step defs to manually control some requests. This got rid of the too many API request error.
That being said, although the program now works as expected, my question does still stand, as I think (or hope) that there is probably a better way to do this than using the ApplicationContext the way I am using it.

Exception handling using hibernate template in Spring framework

I am using Spring with Hibernate in my project.There are many methods written in DAO implementation java file and every method is using the same try/catch/finally lines of code which seem redundant to me.
I am told to optimize/refactor the code since the file LOC exceeds 10k.I read somewhere that using HibernateDaoSupport we need not to worry about exceptions or closing the session. It will be taken care of by Spring itself.
Could somebody please help me how to proceed or do the needful or any better way to handle exceptions?I am pasting below code of one method in DAO layer.
public class CSDDaoImpl extends HibernateDaoSupport implements CSDDao {
public Deal getDealStructure(long dealId) throws CSDServiceException {
Session session = null;
try {
session = getSession();
Deal deal = (Deal) session.createCriteria(Deal.class).add(
Restrictions.eq("dealId", dealId)).uniqueResult();
return deal;
} catch (DataAccessResourceFailureException darfex) {
String message = "Failed to retrieve the deal object.";
CSDServiceException ex = new CSDServiceException(message, darfex);
ex.setStackTrace(darfex.getStackTrace());
ex.setErrorCode(Constants.DATA_ACCESS_FAILURE_EXP);
ex.setMessageToUser(message);
throw ex;
} catch (IllegalStateException isex) {
String message = "Failed to retrieve the deal object.";
CSDServiceException ex = new CSDServiceException(message, isex);
ex.setStackTrace(isex.getStackTrace());
ex.setErrorCode(Constants.ILLEGAL_STATE_EP);
ex.setMessageToUser(message);
throw ex;
} catch (HibernateException hbex) {
String message = "Failed to retrieve the deal object.";
CSDServiceException ex = new CSDServiceException(message, hbex);
ex.setStackTrace(hbex.getStackTrace());
ex.setErrorCode(Constants.HIBERNATE_EXP);
ex.setMessageToUser(message);
throw ex;
} finally {
if (session != null && session.isOpen()) {
try {
session.close();
} catch (HibernateException hbex) {
log.error("Failed to close the Hibernate Session.", hbex);
hbex.printStackTrace();
CSDServiceException ex = new CSDServiceException(
"Failed to close the Hibernate Session.", hbex);
ex.initCause(hbex.getCause());
ex.setStackTrace(hbex.getStackTrace());
throw ex;
}
}
}
}
}
The best approach of handling exceptions is i believe through writing an Exception Interceptor to intercept all your DAO calls and you can catch the ones you only need in your application and wrap it with your own custom application specific exceptions.
You definitely do not need to work directly with session once an exception is thrown. That would defeat the purpose of using HibernateDaoSupport and Spring.
Have a look at this link : http://static.springsource.org/spring/docs/current/spring-framework-reference/html/classic-spring.html
Hope that helps.
