JUnit test case error: "Address already in use: bind" - spring

I have a JUnit test case for my Project which is developed using
SpringBoot (1.3.5) & JDK 8. When I run my project as JUnit test in STS, all
test cases pass, but gives error at the end of each test cases, which
is: I am trying to run JUnit Coverage:

...2o more test cases....

In Spring Boot < 1.4 you can annotate your test class with #IntegrationTest({"server.port=0"})
In Spring Boot >= 1.4 you can use #SpringBootTest(classes = Application.class , webEnvironment=WebEnvironment.RANDOM_PORT).
Both approaches have the same effect, namely; Spring will assign a random port (and will magically update the application properties in your test context to reflect this test-specific port).
More details in the docs ...
If you need to start a full running server for tests, we recommend that you use random ports. If you use #SpringBootTest(webEnvironment=WebEnvironment.RANDOM_PORT) an available port will be picked at random each time your test runs.
The #LocalServerPort annotation can be used to inject the actual port used into your test. For convenience, tests that need to make REST calls to the started server can additionally #Autowire a TestRestTemplate which will resolve relative links to the running server.
Update 1: based on your updated question I can now see that you are using #WebIntegrationTest. In this case you could simply add the randomPort parameter to that annotation e.g.
#WebIntegrationTest(randomPort = true)

How to mock ElasticsearchOperations (spring-data-elasticsearch v.4.0.3) when unit testing

I am working on a project that uses Spring 2.3.3, spring-data-elastic-4.0.3, ElasticSearch 7.9.0 and mockito-core 3.3.3
I'm trying to mock ElasticsearchOperations when writing unit tests, this is the Service I would like to test (where it's used ElasticsearchOperations):
#Service
public class SearchByLabelServiceImpl implements SearchByLabelService {
private ElasticsearchOperations elasticsearchTemplate;
public SearchByLabelServiceImpl(ElasticsearchOperations elasticsearchTemplate) {
this.elasticsearchTemplate = elasticsearchTemplate;
}
public SearchPage<TagResponse> searchByLabel(String query, List<String> labelsToExclude, boolean shouldIncludeDescription, Pageable pageable) {
....
enter code here
var result = elasticsearchTemplate.search(nativeSearchQuery, TagResponse.class, IndexCoordinates.of(tagIndexName));
}
And this is the Test class:
#RunWith(SpringRunner.class)
#SpringBootTest
#ActiveProfiles(profiles = "test")
public class SearchByLabelServiceImplTest {
private ElasticsearchOperations elasticsearchTemplate = mock(ElasticsearchOperations.class);
private SearchByLabelService searchByLabelService = new SearchByLabelServiceImpl(elasticsearchTemplate);
#Test
#Ignore
public void shouldReturnTheTagsBasedOnSearchRequestIncludingDescription() {
...//Arrange
when(elasticsearchTemplate.search(queryArgumentCaptor.capture(), eq(TagResponse.class), IndexCoordinates.of(tagIndexName))).thenReturn(searchHitsResponse);
var searchResponse = searchByLabelService.searchByLabel(testSearchQuery, testLabelsToExcludeList, true, PageRequest.of(1, 1));
....
//Assertions
}
And the error I get is this one:
org.mockito.exceptions.base.MockitoException:
Mockito cannot mock this class: interface org.springframework.data.elasticsearch.core.ElasticsearchOperations.
Mockito can only mock non-private & non-final classes.
If you're not sure why you're getting this error, please report to the mailing list.

Many thanks in advance.
You are using Spring Data Elasticsearch 4.0.3 which was built with Elasticsearch library 7.6.2, but during the runtime you are providing Elasticsearch 7.9.0.
Elasticsearch had a little breaking change in their code between 7.6 and 7.9:
The class org.elasticsearch.cluster.metadata.AliasMetaData was renamed to org.elasticsearch.cluster.metadata.AliasMetadata - please notice the change from D to d in Metadata.
So what can you do? Why do you need to use the Elasticsearch libs in 7.9? If you cluster is running on 7.9, you could probably still access it with client libs from 7.6.
Or you update your application to use Spring Data Elasticsearch 4.1 which was released yesterday.
You could wrap the ElasticsearchOperations in a new class you could create (eg ElasticsearchOperationsWrapper) where you would expose the methods you need and in your code, wherever you invoked ElasticsearchOperations replace it by ElasticsearchOperationsWrapper and then you could mock it normally. ;)

spring boot and camel throws direct.DirectConsumerNotAvailableException

I'm trying to get simple example of springboot and camel working but come undone. Not sure what i'm doing wrong. in the gradle build i've included so far
dependencies {
compile 'org.apache.camel:camel-spring-boot-starter:2.18.4'
compile 'org.apache.camel:camel-groovy:2.18.4'
compile 'org.apache.camel:camel-stream:2.18.4'
compile 'org.codehaus.groovy:groovy-all:2.4.11'
testCompile group: 'junit', name: 'junit', version: '4.11'
testCompile group: 'junit', name: 'junit', version: '4.12'
}
i've create a DirectRoute component like this
#Component
class DirectRoute extends RouteBuilder{
#Override
void configure () throws Exception {
from ("direct:in") //tried stream:in also
.to ("stream:out")
}
}
I then have a driver bean that try's to invoke the route
#Component
public class HelloImpl implements Hello {
#Produce(uri = "direct:in")
private ProducerTemplate template;
#Override
public String say(String value) throws ExecutionException, InterruptedException {
assert template
println "def endpoint is : " + template.getDefaultEndpoint()
return template.sendBody (template.getDefaultEndpoint(), value)
}
}
lastly in the springboot application class i added a command line runner like this, that gets my bean from the spring context, and invokes the say method. I'm using groovy so i just passed a closure to the command line runner.
#Bean
public CommandLineRunner commandLineRunner(ApplicationContext ctx) {
//return closure to run on startup - just list the beans enabled
{args ->
println("Let's inspect the beans provided by Spring Boot:")
String[] beanNames = ctx.getBeanDefinitionNames()
Arrays.sort(beanNames)
for (String beanName : beanNames) {
println(beanName)
}
println("call the direct:start route via the service")
Hello service = ctx.getBean("helloService")
def result = service.say("William")
println "service returned : $result "
}
}
when i run my application i get all the bean names printed out (that's ok), however when i invoke the direct:in via producer template i get this error (org.apache.camel.component.direct.DirectConsumerNotAvailableException) see below.
I was expecting the route to be triggered the name sent to see that arrive in the output stream - but this is what i get.

What have i done wrong - and why does the producer template invocation on 'direct:in' (also tried stream in with same problem) not work? I thought that .to("stream:out") would be a consumer.
any pointers or advice gratefully received at this point
I have an update on my problems:
I had a subpackage with the application class annotated with #SpringBootApplication. So yes, unadorned it only scans subpackages.
you can add scanBasePackages= or scanBaseClasses= parameter, however when I tried doing a scan for single class, it seemed to scan the whole directory any way and grabbed the others as well.
I refactored the app to have a single root package with subpackages and elected to set the 'scanBasePakages to the new root package. but left the Application class in its own subpackage (personal preference only - documentation suggests leaving the Application in the root package)
you can now add other classes annotated with #Configuration to generate beans or use the basic #Component.
if you create Camel routes annotated with #Component they will be auto configured in the camelContext for you.
it appears by default that Spring isnt not starting the camelContext for you. When I checked the status of the context it shows as starting and not started. so in my commandLineRunner I had to start get the spring injected camelContext and had to start it myself, and exited it when I finished. I was slightly suprised as I thought SpringBootStarter would auto start the camelContext, but it appears not.
once you have Spring component scanning etc working and you start the camelContext, then problems with the org.apache.camel.component.direct.DirectConsumerNotAvailableException exception went away and things started to work - at least the baby examples I'm trying.
So revised structure now looks like this:
The revised ApplicationClass now looks like this with some simple println output to see the state of the context, and beans in the spring ctx. The helleoService bean is still the proxy I use to setup the producer template to call the DirectRoute.
package com.softwood.application
import groovy.util.logging.Slf4j
import org.apache.camel.CamelContext
import org.springframework.beans.factory.annotation.Autowired
import com.softwood.services.Hello
/**
* Created by willw on 07/06/2017.
*/
import org.springframework.boot.CommandLineRunner;
import org.springframework.boot.SpringApplication;
import org.springframework.boot.autoconfigure.SpringBootApplication;
import org.springframework.context.ApplicationContext;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Bean
#Slf4j //inject logger
#SpringBootApplication (scanBasePackages = ["com.softwood"]) //forces scan at parent
// same as #Configuration #EnableAutoConfiguration #ComponentScan with 'defaults' e.g. sub packages
public class Application {
#Autowired
ApplicationContext ctx
#Autowired
CamelContext camelContext
public static void main(String[] args) {
SpringApplication.run(Application.class, args)
}
#Bean
public CommandLineRunner commandLineRunner(ApplicationContext ctx) {
//return closure to run on startup - just list the beans enabled
{args ->
println("Let's inspect the beans provided by Spring Boot:")
String[] beanNames = ctx.getBeanDefinitionNames()
Arrays.sort(beanNames)
for (String beanName : beanNames) {
println(beanName)
}
/* when component scan is working - bean routes are added
automatically to camel context via springBoot, however you do have to start
the camel context, yourself
*/
println "camelCtx has following components : " + camelContext.componentNames
println "camelCtx state is : " + camelContext.status
println "starting camel context"
camelContext.start()
println "camelCtx state now is : " + camelContext.status
//log.debug "wills logging call "
println("call the direct:start route via the service")
Hello service = ctx.getBean("helloService")
def result = service.say("William")
println "service returned : $result "
println "sleep 5 seconds "
sleep (5000)
println "stop camel context"
camelContext.stop()
println "camelCtx state now is : " + camelContext.status
}
}
}
That proxy is just registered as a simple bean like this in the spring context
package com.softwood.services
/**
* Created by willw on 07/06/2017.
*/
import org.apache.camel.Produce;
import org.apache.camel.ProducerTemplate
import org.springframework.stereotype.Component;
import java.util.concurrent.ExecutionException
#Component
public class HelloImpl implements Hello {
#Produce(uri = "direct:in") /* ?block=true */
private ProducerTemplate template
#Override
public String say(String value) throws ExecutionException, InterruptedException {
assert template
println "def endpoint is : " + template.getDefaultEndpoint()
//Future future = template.asyncSendBody(template.getDefaultEndpoint(), value)
//return future.get()
return template.sendBody (template.getDefaultEndpoint(), value)
}
}
The TimedRoute just sorts itself out with no template required to invoke in
package com.softwood.camelRoutes
/**
* Created by willw on 07/06/2017.
*/
import org.apache.camel.builder.RouteBuilder
import org.springframework.stereotype.Component
#Component
class TimedRoute extends RouteBuilder {
#Override
void configure () throws Exception {
from ("timer:foo")
.to ("log:com.softwood.application.Application?level=WARN")
}
}
My simple no-op file route isn't working (yet) and not sure why. I suspect I've not got the file config right somehow; some playing is required.
package com.softwood.camelRoutes
import org.apache.camel.builder.RouteBuilder
import org.springframework.stereotype.Component
/**
* Created by willw on 08/06/2017.
*/
#Component
class FileNoOpRoute extends RouteBuilder{
#Override
void configure () throws Exception {
from ("file:../com.softwood.file-inbox?recursive=true&noop=true&idempotent=true")
.to ("file:../com.softwood.file-outbox")
}
}
However the basics are not working and least camel is doing something whereas before I just had the exception and nothing.
I have found another question on Spring config highlighting some of the above also.

How to make Weld lookup class on generated-sources

I have a maven project which i'm using MapStruct to generate mappers to help in the job of translating entities into DTOs and vice-versa.
This mappers are generated during the generate-sources phase of maven, and stored into target/generated-sources and target/AppName/WEB-INF/classes folders.
For example, I have this Mapper
#Mapper
public interface RuleMapper {
RuleDto ruletoDto(Rule rule);
//other cool stuf
}
I configurated MapStruct to use CDI, so it will generate the following:
#Generated(
value = "org.mapstruct.ap.MappingProcessor",
date = "2016-12-19T23:19:36-0200",
comments = "version: 1.1.0.CR1, compiler: javac, environment: Java 1.8.0_112"
)
#Singleton
#Named
public class RuleMapperImpl implements RuleMapper {
#Override
public RuleDto ruletoDto(Rule rule) {
ruleDto ruleDto = new ruleDto();
if ( rule != null ) {
ruleDto.setIdRule( rule.getIdRule() );
}
return ruleDto;
}
}
It works perfectely when running on Wildfly server, the problem is that I'm trying to junit test this class, for this, I implemented a custom runner as shown bellow:
import org.junit.runners.BlockJUnit4ClassRunner;
import org.junit.runners.model.InitializationError;
public class WeldJUnit4Runner extends BlockJUnit4ClassRunner {
public WeldJUnit4Runner(Class<Object> clazz) throws InitializationError {
super(clazz);
}
#Override
protected Object createTest() throws Exception {
final Class<?> test = getTestClass().getJavaClass();
return WeldContext.INSTANCE.getBean(test);
}
}
And:
import org.jboss.weld.environment.se.Weld;
import org.jboss.weld.environment.se.WeldContainer;
public class WeldContext {
public static final WeldContext INSTANCE = new WeldContext();
private final Weld weld;
private final WeldContainer container;
private WeldContext() {
this.weld = new Weld();
this.container = weld.initialize();
Runtime.getRuntime().addShutdownHook(new Thread() {
#Override
public void run() {
weld.shutdown();
}
});
}
public <T> T getBean(Class<T> type) {
return container.instance().select(type).get();
}
}
These implementations were taken from here.
Finally, the test:
#RunWith(WeldJUnit4Runner.class)
public class RuleMapperTest {
#Inject
private RuleMapper ruleMapper;
#Test
public void coolTestName() {
Assert.assertTrue(Boolean.TRUE);
}
}
When I try to run, this is the console output:
log4j:WARN No appenders could be found for logger (org.jboss.logging).
log4j:WARN Please initialize the log4j system properly.
log4j:WARN See http://logging.apache.org/log4j/1.2/faq.html#noconfig for more info.

Like Weld wasn't abble to lookup the generated class.
The beans.xml is already created under src/test/resources/META-INF/beans.xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<beans xmlns="http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/javaee"
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xsi:schemaLocation="http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/javaee
http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/javaee/beans_1_1.xsd"
version="1.1" bean-discovery-mode="all">
</beans>
Can anybody point me a solution to this problem? I've already searched something simillar, but no success.
Here's a full explanation to your problem and why what I wrote fixes it.
In Maven, you have at least 2 classloader. Your test classpath and your main classpath each have their own classloader. You can have others depending on your dependency structure. CDI identifies each classloader as a separate bean archive when running this way. src/main/webapp is explicitly for your WAR file. The beans.xml there does not give you a bean archive. Adding one to src/main/resources does. This problem is specific to how you're instantiating weld.
There are other projects that do this correctly - CDI-unit and Arquillian, specifically the Weld Embedded container. If you were to use one of these, this would not be an issue.

Pure JerseyTest without letting Spring messing with services

I am having hard time with JerseyTest and Spring. Previously in non-Spring Java projects what I usually did for my REST APIs was to extend my Test from JerseyTest, mocking the Service classes and simply (unit)testing my REST API. Now I'm using spring in my project where in my REST resource classes the Services are annotated with #Autowired. Now that I'm using the same scenario. Spring jumps in and nags about stuff like lack of applicationcontext.xml. I do want to use spring in my production but for my unit test I don't need my test know anything about Spring and all its autowiring and classpath annotation processing! How can I get this right? The classes look like this:
public class RESTResource{
#Autowired
MyService service;
#GET
public Response getSomeStuff(){
...
service.getStuff()
}
}
And here is the Test class
public class RESTResourceTest extends JerseyTest{
private Service service;
#Override
public Application configure(){
RESTResource resource = new RESTResource();
service = Mockito.mock(Service.class);
resource.setService(service);
ResourceConfig config = new ResourceConfig();
config.register(resource);
return config;
}
}
This is the stacktrace:

P.S. I'm using spring boot.
What you can do is to simply exclude the jersey-spring3 using the the sure-fire plugin for test phase.
<plugin>
<groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId>
<artifactId>maven-surefire-plugin</artifactId>
<configuration>
<classpathDependencyExcludes>
<classpathDependencyExclude>
org.glassfish.jersey.ext:jersey-spring3
</classpathDependencyExclude>
</classpathDependencyExcludes>
</configuration>
</plugin>
Here is some code snippets that might help in your case :
Option 1. Your REST resource class :
#Component
#Path("/api/helloworld")
public class RESTResource{
#Autowired
MyService service;
#GET
#Produces(MediaType.TEXT_PLAIN)
public String helloMessage() {
return "Hello World Jersey Way!";
}
}
Your test config class :
#Component
public class JerseyConfig extends ResourceConfig {
/**
* In constructor we can define Jersey Resources & Other Components
*/
public JerseyConfig() {
register(RESTResource.class);
}
}
3.Your test base class :
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#SpringApplicationConfiguration(classes = Application.class)//NOTE : Application is a spring boot main class,or if you have specific configuration class similar to test config class above use #ContextConfiguration(classes = MyServiceSpringConfig.class)
public class RESTResourceTest extends JerseyTest {
#Override
protected Application configure() {
return new JerseyConfig();
}
#Test
public void contextLoads() {
}
#Test
public void someTest() throws Exception {
// Very useful test
}
}
Option 2 :
#Priority(value = 1)
public class MySpringWebInitializer implements WebApplicationInitializer
{
#Override
public void onStartup(ServletContext container)
{
//Tell jersey-spring3 the context is already initialized
container.setInitParameter("contextConfigLocation", "NOTNULL");
AnnotationConfigWebApplicationContext appContext = new AnnotationConfigWebApplicationContext();
appContext.register(RESTResource.class);
container.addListener(new ContextLoaderListener(appContext));
}
}
Also,for spring boot you can run test cases using an active profile or a config name ,pass runtime VM args with -Dspring.config.name=test for running test cases etc..
Hope this help and the rest is self explanatory.
The better way to integrate JerseyTest with Spring
No inheritance from JerseyTest in junit test class
No dependencies on Jersey in junit test class, just pure jax-rs dependency
perfectly integrate SpringJUnit4ClassRunner and #ContextConfiguration
My solution is hosted on github. Hope this help for you.

Why the cryptic MultipleFailureException error message with the SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.withAfterClasses method

Update -- September 2015
Spring Framework 4.2.2 throws a more meaningful exception if JUnit 4.9 is not in the classpath. See SPR-13521 for details.
The following is an excerpt from the class-level Javadoc for SpringJUnit4ClassRunner:
NOTE: As of Spring Framework 4.1, this class requires JUnit 4.9 or higher.
The class in question, MultipleFailureException, was introduced in JUnit 4.9.
So that's why your test is failing with the ClassNotFoundException.
Upgrading to JUnit 4.9 (or preferably 4.12) will therefore solve your problem.

Sam (author of the Spring TestContext Framework)
