I'm not sure when it disappeared but my structure visualizer is not displaying. I tried unchecking the box in options, Show structure guide lines, and rechecking. I also tried resetting all settings to default, changed the color for the guidelines, rebooting and they are still missing.
I do have Reshaper installed so I suspended that to see if there is a difference and they still won't show.
The only other thing I did recently was install other templates such as Xamarin for mobile development but I'm not sure it is related of if that is when they disappeared.
Does anyone have any other ideas short of reinstalling VS? I have 15.4.5.

This error started showing from yesterday, I remember installing Web development packages and updates windows. Before that if was working fine.
If I reload project same error shows up.
The application which this project type is based on was not found.

I tried uninstalling Xamarin packages and reinstalling.
It did not solve the issue.
Now I am doing complete uninstall of MS Visual Studio 2017
Please note that no changes have been made to csproj or solution file.
I get the "xamarin project type incompatible" frequently. (VS2015)
The solution for me:
Close down VS.
In the src project folder delete the .vs folder.
Restart VS.
Complete uninstall of Visual Studio along with C++ distributables from Control Panel > Programs and Features and then re-installing Visual Studio fixed the issue. Seems its caused by errors in installation
Microsoft should code properly and let programmers know if there were errors and 'repair' option is supposed to fix them. I don't know why these things are missed out in roll-outs.
While using Visual Studio 2015 with the latest updates, Intellisense and CodeLens do not work properly. Syntax highlighting, code completion, and property/method references (not sure the exact name for this) are shown very inconsistently, or not at all. These work for some things, and don't for most others. Errors do not show up at all without an explicit build, and even then, they show up one at a time, which is very time-consuming.
I should note that this is not happening in XAML, just my .cs files. I was not able to reproduce these issues in either a WPF project or a Windows Forms project; I'm only seeing this in my Xamarin.Forms solution.
I've tried restarting VS, closing the solution and restarting VS, restarting my machine, resetting the "Statement Completion" settings in VS options, deleting the solution's .suo file, resetting settings via the Import and Export Settings Wizard, but nothing has changed. I would appreciate any suggestions.
Update: Uninstalling all Xamarin-related VS extensions and NuGet packages, then reinstalling seems to have fixed things, at least for now.
Further update: I ended up seeing this problem again not long after my first update. It turns out the path for one of my projects had too many characters (???), so I moved the whole solution folder to the root of my C drive. I haven't had any problems since.
For those, having xaml intellisense problem and you are using Resharper;
Disable ReSharper!
Visual Studio > Tools | Options | ReSharper | General : Suspend
Update:
When I install the latest ReSharper version (2017.2), the problem is solved.
I'm having this error pop up once I start Visual Studio professional 2013 with update 3.
I don't know whats going on and also when I created a web form and try to put items from the toolbox into a table in my code it doesn't let me. the items are dim and can't select them any more. before I would make a table and try to add Labels, textbox, etc and it wasn't a problem.
Visual Studio 2013 Update 4
Tools -> Extensions and Updates
Disabled "Release Management for Visual Studio 2013 v2.1".
That worked for me.
I got the same issue today, but the error message should be giving you some guidance.
Take a look at mine, it tells me to check the "ActivityLog.xml" for more information.
After looking at the entry my error showed me that it ocured the evening before around 5:30pm and I know I was installing the Visual Studio 2013 Update 4 at this time. So it seems I had a problem with my Update installation.
(Sorry maybe someone can school me on how to properly load an image for viewing)
So I realized my problem was an install issue I created, yours might be an add-on or something similar that you just updated your Visual Studio with that corrupted your VS.
So a little more researching and asking some buddies at work and we tried doing this step in another SO article, which should have the same effect of fixing our package loading problem also.
the Provider package did not load.
After running the steps listed there my Visual Studio started up without any obvious issue.
Hope this helps.
Open ActivityLog.xml in a viewer (I've used Microsoft Edge) and you'll find the error. VSPackage is the "Developer Analytics Tools" extension for me.
The error is gone after uninstalling that package. You can obtain the package and attempt to reinstall from the Developer Analytics Tools page in the Visual Studio Gallery.
I uninstalled and reinstalled Visual Studio and the problem went away for a little bit. It eventually came back complaining about different packages.
Then I noticed my home directory was encrypted. I decrypted the directory and the problem went away.
If it is not an encryption issue, I'd try just uninstalling and reinstalling VS 2013.
Message could be shown in case of "Path" environment variable longer than 2048 characters. In that case, system doesn't work proply with system paths like %windir%.
If it's your case, shorten "Path" environment variable and everything works again.
I am having an issue with my context menu in Visual Studio 2010 that is driving me nuts. I think it started when I installed the Code Snippet Designer Extent ion but I am not 100% sure about that. I didn't notice it until after I uninstalled that extension with a few others.
I have tried reinstalling and then uninstalling the extension again but that didn't work either. I am left with these extensions on my machine DevExpress Tools, Dpack, PowerCommands for VS, Productivity Power Tools and the VS10x Code Marker.
I have another system that has all the same extensions installed but doesn't have the context menu problem and I never loaded the Snippet Designer on that machine, which is why I think the problem was caused by something in that particular extension.
Here is what it looks like.
http://www.mydatafish.com/contextmenu.png I tried to post a picture but I need more points to do so and it is hard to explain without a picture so please take a look at the link.
Anybody have any ideas of how I can remove these phantom mene items? By the way I did try resetting the context mene through the the customize menu item in the Tools menu.
OK I am not sure how it got in the condition that it was but I found the program that was causing the problem. It was something called "Code Helper" and it was an add it that I used with VS 2005. It was listed as a AddIn for Visual Studio 2010 but wasn't inside the Addin directory for 2010.
To get rid of the problem I removed the program from the Programs and Features (Add/Remove).
I am developing my minor and major project in VS2008. Suddenly tools have started to go missing from my toolbar. I have visited several forums but am not able to solve the problem.
Basically I have silverlight 2.0 installed with SDK, and tools and all.
Now when I need to access the media element control from silverlight it does not display.
Further more on listing all controls I can see those controls but they are disabled.
Please Help Me out.

try it:
Reset all setting in tools -> Import and Export Setting menu
Or
2 You should update your VS 2008 SP1 with . NET 3.5
Hope this help,
I am not too sure, but it has something to do with the references in the project. I have the same problem with some of my projects when i started adding references to many assemblies.
When you reset the toolbox ,does it work ? On my computer, whenever I reset the toolbox, the icons come back only to disappear some time later after rebuilding the application many times.
Icons should not disappear from anywhere other than your toolbox.
Had the same problem:
Reset all setting in Tools -> Import and Export Setting menu
helped nicely))
It's weird but I was able to solve the problem by simply removing USB Mouse .:)
When i checked this out with some others developing on their laptops it came to me that it happens with very few of us in VS 2008 but still can drive on mad.
