How do I add opacity to the series-chart, in the similar way that it exists in scatter-plot and splom?
Primarily, I have the brush in the series chart similar to the one that exists in scatter-plot but cannot seem to get the opacity of the excluded points sorted out.

There are many ways to accomplish this. The way I typically do this is to create a series of SVG elements -- such as circles or rects -- using the same scale and data as the paths.
You can make these objects visible or invisible. Either way, you can attach mouseenter, mouseleave events to each to render and populate the tooltip.
New to D3 here. I am attempting to combine brush and zoom(ex1) with multiple brushes(ex2).
The idea is that the user will be able to create multiple brushes on top of Ex1's focus chart to make annotations on the data. Which I am able to do. However, I am only able to update one(the first) annotation brush position on the chart after zooming using this on ex2's zoomed function:

Where t is the zoom transform and lastSelection is the selection from the last brush that was created. Very hacky, I know, but at least behaves as expected.
I would like to be able to update all the brushes that are stored in the brushes array after zooming and panning in a way that can be called from the zoomed function. Help!

I am trying to modify Bullet Charts example of dimple.js with each bullet chart being in a child-svg of the parent-svg. Purpose of having individual svg for each bullet chart is to make their management (show/hide/remove) easier. Also, this makes the recursive definition of a chart complete - That is, a chart is contained by an svg.
The fiddle for the modified version is here....
As you can see, from 2nd chart onwards, on mouse hover, tool tips go out of place!!! Please note that, for child-svg, I've set the style overflow: visible without which tool-tips were not visible at all.
Want to know if I am missing anything in handling the attributes of child-svg elements or is it a bug in dimple.js. Also, please let me know if you know of any workaround.

One of the first questions I have is why do you want child svg elements? What are you trying to accomplish?
The only difference I see in your code and the example is the height / width swap at the top and the sub svg + bounds.
Keep in mind that the origin changes with each sub-svg. This might be why you are having trouble with the tool-tips. Maybe you have that worked into your add-bullet calls.
I think nagu has the right approach here if you really want separate svg elements.
If I add this style (.style("opacity", .2) to a rectangle the gridlines appear in front of the rectangle, in this example http://bl.ocks.org/bunkat/1962173. Is there a way to bring shape to front or send gridline back?
The elements in an SVG are displayed in the order in which they are added to the DOM. That is, anything you want displayed on top of everything else should be added last. In your case, you need to add the rectangle after adding the grid lines.

If you back the shapes with identical shapes of the background color, the grid lines will not show through.
Simpler solution: do the shapes really need to be transparent?
Problem :
Trying to create a layout looking like this one below where each portion is clickable and has separate entity.
Tried solution and problems with it :
create arc with canvas. Have to add the arc with stroke. Stroke is not clickable. Tried hacks from other answers but they don't seem to work.
Click Event on a Stroke of the Shape(arc) doesn't work
Instead of drawing with arcs, how about this:
use Wedges instead of Arcs
Draw the 3 outside shapes as Wedges and put them on a layer#1.
Draw the 10 inside shapes as Wedges and put them on another layer#2 above layer#1.
Draw the center circle as a Circle and put it on another layer#3 above layer#1 & layer#2.
Attach on.(“click”) to each individual wedge.
Layering will give you the visual "nesting" effect your looking for.
Layering will give you proper click control over each wedge-piece.
