Working on solution with 2 WEBAPI projects, and 1 MVC/Angular UI project
all 3 are docker enabled.
The problem is when I try to run my docker-compose project with my .yml files i get this error msg:
**Visual Studio Container Tools requires Docker to be running before building, debugging or running a containerized project.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Community\MSBuild\Sdks\Microsoft.Docker.Sdk\build\Microsoft.VisualStudio.Docker.Compose.targets 311**
and when I start Visual Studio Elevated/admin, I get the following error msg
Its as if visual studio is not recognizing docker for windows is installed

I am using windows self hosted agent with VS 2019 build tools installed. But in the build pipeline, I am unable to build ".vdproj" (.net framework 3.5) project. Please let me know whether installing of visual studio is the only option or any alternative approach available.
Thanks.
To build the .vdproj project, you will have to use devenv command to build the project.
Devenv.exe is the central Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for Visual Studio.
So you need to install the Visual Studio to get the Devenv.exe to build the project.
In Azure DevOps, you can add the Command Line Task and run the following command to build the .vdproj project.
For example:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2019\Enterprise\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" MyProjectDir\MySolution.sln /Rebuild Release
Step 1 - I have installed visual studio build tools by downloading
vs_BuildTools.exe from this site (you will require to login to microsoft account to browse this URL)
Step 2 - I created offline installer by following various articles particularly this one
And created zip file offlineBuildTools17.zip
Step 3 - Copied offlineBuildTools17.zip file to Build server which doesn't have internet connection.
Build server is Windows server 2012 R2.
Step 4 - Extracted Zip file on server and installed Build tools. Installation goes smoothly.
I could see installation files in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\BuildTools\MSBuild\15.0
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\BuildTools\MSBuild\Microsoft
Step 5 - I have simple DLL and Console application (.exe) project in my solution. These are simply 'hello world' application NOT USING DOT NET CORE. I am using .net frameowrk 4
Problem: I am unable to create release mode dlls and exe
Same thing is working on my laptop where I have installed visual studio 2017 community edition.
On laptop where visual studio 2017 installed
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Community\MSBuild\15.0\Bin\MSBuild" <optional project.csproj> /p:Configuration=Release
This creates dlls and exe in bin\Release folder of project
But the same doesn't work on Build server.
Always creates dlls and exe in bin\debug folder.
My final goal is to create 'publish' folder
This is weird but it is solving my problem.
if i ran following command - msbuild is always generating Debug binaries. which was my original problem. it doesn't generate release mode binaries at all
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\BuildTools\MSBuild\15.0\Bin\"msbuild /p:Configuration=Release /t:publish /p:OutDir="./Publish"
But if i write following command , (note how msbuild is placed in double quote along with mbuild full path) it is working fine. it generates release mode binaries and also publish folders.
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\BuildTools\MSBuild\15.0\Bin\msbuild" /p:Configuration=Release /t:publish /p:OutDir="./Publish"
thanks
I have had to do a few update of Visual Studio on my Windows 10 machine (after some licensing issues).
I use to have Visual Studio Enterprise 2017, which I uninstalled. I now have Visual Studio Professional 2017, and Studio Enterprise 2019 (which I recently installed). I also installed Visual Studio Build Tools 2019 (2).
Now, when I try to build my Ionic project via the command I have always used...
ionic cordova build windows --prod --release -- --archs="x86 x64 arm" --buildConfig=platform_build_files\\windows\\build.config
I now get the error...
Building project: D:\dev\myapp\platforms\windows\CordovaApp.Windows10.jsproj
Configuration : release
Platform : x86
Buildflags : /p:AppxBundle=Never,/p:UapAppxPackageBuildMode=StoreUpload
MSBuildTools : C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Enterprise\MSBuild\15.0\Bin
buildProject spawn: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Enterprise\MSBuild\15.0\Bin\msbuild [ 'D:\\dev\\myapp\\platforms\\windows\\CordovaApp.Windows10.jsproj', '/clp:NoSummary;NoItemAndPropertyList;Verbosity=minimal',
'/nologo',
'/p:Configuration=release',
'/p:Platform=x86',
'/p:AppxBundle=Never',
'/p:UapAppxPackageBuildMode=StoreUpload' ] { stdio: 'inherit' }
The system cannot find the path specified.
No valid MSBuild was detected for the selected target: Error: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Enterprise\MSBuild\15.0\Bin\msbuild: Command failed with exit code ENOENT
Of course I no longer have a folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Enterprise as I uninstalled it.
I have removed and readded the windows platform for my Ionic app, but this did not help.
Also, I am not sure if this is related, but when I try to open the CordovaApp.sln in Visual Studio 2019, I get the following...
Not sure if related.
My question is, how can I reset this MSBuild path? I cannot see any environmental variables anywhere for this, I just can't get rid of this old path
Edit 1
I added the env var as suggested:
Opened a new command prompt, but it is still looking for the non-existent path
No valid MSBuild was detected for the selected target: Error: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Enterprise\MSBuild\15.0\Bin\msbuild: Command failed with exit code ENOENT
In Visual Studio 2019, creating UWP apps using Javascript is no longer supported, if you want to build UWP apps using web technologies like Cordova. You need to use Visual Studio 2017.
My question is, how can I reset this MSBuild path?
Visual Studio will choose the version of MSBuild without explicit settings, but you can change this by setting environment variables.
Please add the path of MSBuild to the system environment variable, like:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Community\MSBuild\15.0\Bin
Best regards.
When I try to use the TFS 2015 Build process to deploy the Test Agent, I am receiving the following error:
‘The running command stopped because the preference variable
“ErrorActionPreference” or common parameter is set to Stop: Cannot
find path ‘C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio
14.0\Common7\Ide\DTAExecutionHost.exe.config’ because it does not exist.’
I have Visual Studio Professional 2015 Edition installed on D drive and using TFS 2015 Test agent is getting installed on C drive.
As VS2015 Professional is installed on D driver so “DTAExecutionHost.exe.config” exists in D driver.
Is there any means by which we can configure Test Agent on D driver using TFS 2015 as I cannot uninstall VS2015 Professional on server.
There is no such setting to configure Test Agent on D Driver in step Visual Studio Test Agent Deployment.
I have a dev machine and a build machine, both of which have Visual Studio 2012 Premium Update 3 installed (Version 11.0.60610.01). Both machines are 64 bit and are running Windows Server 2012 Version 6.2 (Build 9200)
The Dev machine has the following folder which contains MSTest.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE
On the build machine, that folder doesn't exist and searching for mstest.exe shows that it isn't on the build server anywhere.
Opening Control Panel > Programs and trying the Change operation doesn't provide any option to install mstest. All options shown in that Change window are identical on each machine.
The build server is also installed as a TFS agent
I've tried re-installing VS but no change.
Why isn't MStest.exe installed on the build machine and how can I get it installed?
I am using VS2017 and I was facing the same issue and I found it in here.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual
Studio\2017\Community\Common7\IDE
Anybody using the VS2017 and facing the same issue can search the directory I have mentioned above to search MSTest.exe
Problem solved - the test components were on the F drive for some reason
This sounds like you did what I did.
If you install the update "2012.3" it will only install minimal components and not the full IDE. Try installing Visual Studio from the ISO (~2GB) and then apply the Update...
I found on a different directory:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Enterprise\Common7\IDE\MSTest.exe
EDIT: I came upon this page because I am trying to make the transition from Visual Studio to the Jetbrains Rider IDE and they assisted with some other questions on where to find dependencies for their command line Justmock runner here
