How to paginate a list of object (not mapped domain object) using custom pagination with spring data - spring

I have a repository called BananaRepositoryImpl that contains a function that return a list of BananaDTO ( the legacy code can't return the mapped entity ( Banana.java ),it's a constraint and I can't change this behavior :( )

Knowing that the BananaDTO object is a DTO for Banana.java class which looks like this :

What I should do is to implement pagination over the findAllBananes() method so that I can return a Page using spring Data ( or another approach ).

Assuming the attributes of the BananaDTO is a subset of the Banana entities attributes you can use class-based projection support of Spring Data JPA, i.e. you just add a Pageable as a parameter to your method and return a Page<BananaDTO>:

Class based projections using a DTO in Spring Data Jpa is not working

In my Spring Boot application, I am trying to implement a class based projection using DTOs as described at:

I have a domain class that looks like:

The first method, findAllByHandle works as expected, but when running the second method, findAllByHandleDTO, which I had hoped to return the projection, my application throws the error:
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Couldn't find PersistentEntity for type class path.to.my.package.domain.MetadataDTO!
I have also tried extending from JpaRepository with the same result. In another attempt, I tried using an Interface based projection which resulted in an almost identical stacktrace, with an internal class substituted for my class.
My project is spring-boot 2.3.0 with Spring Web, Spring Data JPA, Rest Repositories, and PostgreSQL Driver.
Can anybody help me understand what I am doing wrong and set me in the right direction?

Update on this question: (I have added the tag spring-data-rest). Experimenting, I have learned that I can successfully call my method, for instance, in the run() method of my application class. It's only when I call the method as a rest endpoint that I see the error. Is this simply an issue of incompatibility with Spring Data Rest?

Spring Data JPA - findBy mapped object

In my legacy application, I have a country table, state table and a mapping table for country and state with few additional columns.
I have created an entity class like this.

I would like to check if the state exists in the mapping table. Both of the below approaches do not work.

What is the right way?
Its not the correct way i feel.The correct way for doing this will be

This implies two things
By extending JpaRepository we get a bunch of generic CRUD methods to create, update, delete, and find
2.It allows Spring to scan the classpath for this interface and create a Spring bean for it.
Also you need some configuration.For that you need to create a configuration class to be used with your data source.You can find many examples to do the same and one such is https://www.baeldung.com/the-persistence-layer-with-spring-data-jpa.
You can also use custom queries and simple queries using the #Query annotation.

Spring Boot Controller endpoint and ModelAttribute deep access

I would like to know how to access a deep collection class attribute in a GET request. My endpoint maps my query strings through #ModelAttribute annotation:
Given that:
public class MyEntity
{
Set<Item> items;
Integer status;
// getters setters
}
public class Item

String name;
// getters setters
}
And my GET request: localhost/entities/?status=0&items[0].name=Garry
Produces bellow behavior?

Looks like there is some problem with the Set<Item>.
If you want to use Set for the items collection you have to initialize it and add some items:
e.g. like this:
public class MyEntity {
private Integer status;
private Set<Item> items;
public MyEntity() {
this.status = 0;
this.items = new HashSet<>();
this.items.add(new Item());
this.items.add(new Item());
}
//getters setters
}
but then you will be able to set only the values of this 2 items:
This will work: http://localhost:8081/map?status=1&items[0].name=asd&items[1].name=aaa
This will not work: http://localhost:8081/map?status=1&items[0].name=asd&items[1].name=aaa&items[2].name=aaa
it will say: Invalid property 'items[2]' of bean class MyEntity.
However if you switch to List:

private List<Item> items;
}
both urls map without the need to initialize anything and for various number of items.
note that I didn't use #ModelAttribute, just set the class as paramter

Offtopic
Mapping a complex object in Get request sounds like a code smell to me.
Usually Get methods are used to get/read data and the url parameters are used to specify the values that should be used to filter the data that has to be read.
if you want to insert or update some data use POST, PATCH or PUT and put the complex object that you want to insert/update in the request body as JSON(you can map that in the Spring Controller with #RequestBody).

You can create a custom constructor and use that to select only some fields in JPA query.

And the use this constructor in JPA query. Make sure you use complete path of class with package.

works dut to you select Know objects with fields that are mapped correct into Know class (and after wrapped into Page).
with query :

returns some custome bean/object that spring data can't map in correct way into Know class (as you declared it as expected return class wrapped into Page). add counstructor into Know with idKnow,SubjectKnow fields , or you can wrap it into some DTO with idKnow,SubjectKnow fields.

NamedEntityGraph Returns All Columns and Objects

I am trying to utilize a NamedEntityGraph to limit the return data for specific queries. Mainly I do not want to return full object details when listing the object. A very simple class example is below.

No matter what I do to plyId and player are always returned. Is there any way to only return the requested columns (intId) ?
As for the collection Hibernate does not do the join for the player object but it still returns player as null. So that part is working to an extent.
I am using a JPARepository below to generate Crud Statements for me

Please use the Example 47 on this page and use repositories accordingly.
In essence, hibernate is right now loading all the feilds in the class and for collections it will work if you follow the example stated above.
