I have a image of ubuntu that I have used before on a USB flash drive. On my laptop, a MSI GE72 6QD Apache Pro, I am unable to boot from it. When I reboot into the recovery tools, no option to boot from external media is available. I am unsure how to do this. Thank you!

The boot issue from other devices is usually in the wrong BIOS setting. Go to the BIOS configuration. When you turn on your computer and when you see the BIOS-POST tests (white text on the screen), press the DEL key on the keyboard (a different keyboard shortcut on each computer - in your case, the DEL key), and then check the BIOS settings for booting from different devices. Check the boot device order and set up as the first USB device.
Simply search for the "boot" text in your manual for your motherboard or your notebook. The problem may also be the UEFI mode, not all boot devices are formatted to work with the new UEFI mode, so it may be better to activate the "UEFI with CSM" instead of the "UEFI" mode.
English manual (including the BIOS configuration) for your notebook:
http://download.msi.com/archive/mnu_exe/1795+1794+16J5+16J4_G_English.zip
You can also use the Quick Boot Menu, but instead of pressing the DEL key to enter the BIOS configuration, press the F11 key. In a fast BOOT-MENU, you select the USB device. But first you may need to switch from "UEFI" to "UEFI with CSM" to make the USB device visible in BOOT-MENU.

You can check this Installing Ubuntu 14.04.3 + Windows 8.1 (Dual-boot) on MSI GE72 2QD Apache
or Installing Ubuntu 16 Linux On A GE62 6QD Apache Pro MSI Notebook
Hope this helps

My laptop used to come with windows 10, but then I decided to install ubuntu on it instead. Now I would like to install windows 10. Is there way to get windows 10 back?
First you will need a bootable USB - a USB flash drive that has at least 16GB of space (there are free programs that you will find available on internet to make the USB bootable), download Windows 10 ISO file and add to the USB.
Alter the BIOS sequence on your PC so your USB device is first. In most instances, the BIOS will usually not be automatically set to your device. If you skip this step, your computer will start regularly from your hard drive instead of getting boot information from your USB device, then follow the steps to install the windows OS.

apologies in advance in case someone answers this already (but looks like have tried everything)
Just build my first pc recently:
AMD® Ryzen 5 3600 6-core processor
ASUS Prime X570-P ATX Motherboard
burn Ubuntu to USB from my MacBook and it's all working fine. ( Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS )
The problem is that I wanna install Windows 10 into PC also.
Have done partition on SSD (have just one SSD + HDD).
But no matter what I try can't seems to install everything right.
It's one of these:
Or pc just can't find my flash drive ( probably something is wrong with the way I burn iso to it)
Or if it does found it I get an error somewhere in the middle of installing, that there is no file for the next step or something like that. ( iso downloaded from Microsoft official page)
I have tried it with various programs (on ios and ubuntu) or even a command line. Even changing settings in BIOS to boot any external drive.
The easy way is to format your Ubuntu partition and install Windows first. Then the Ubuntu installer will automatically detect Windows and and you should be fine.
The hard way is to keep Ubuntu and install Windows. Then you will need to restore grub (Ubuntu's boot loader).
You have to run and install both OS with in (U)EFI mode and adjust some settings in UEFI. This could be the reason for the flashdrive not being found. If you have used tools like Rufus for creation of the bootable USB drive it could also be broken. It is enough to format the flashdrive with FAT32 and copy the contents of the ISO into its root.
Maybe this and this will help

Dual boot Vista/Win7. Can I install VMware and run the Vista OS already installed from the physical HDD? [closed]

This is part of a migration from Vista to Windows7. I now have a dual boot computer, with Win7 the preferred OS. From time to time I might need to go back to Vista to see how the things were configured there and then I will need to go back to Win7 to configure/install the same app there.
This is a computer that had very complex settings and it was difficult and risky to upgrade in place, to install Win7 over Vista.
In order to avoid countless reboots I would like to be able to always run Win7 and when I need I would like to be able to fire up VMWare Workstation and to start a Vista Machine that would have as HDD the physical HDD where currently Vista resides. I would expect the VMWare machine to run the OS installed on that HDD and I would expect Vista no to see that the hardware changed. My apps are not hardware dependent.
Is this possible?
Its possible and there are a few ways you could go about doing this.
The Easy Way
VMware Desktop allows you to use your existing partition/Disk to boot from only if its an IDE Disk.
https://www.vmware.com/support/ws5/doc/ws_disk_dualboot.html
The hard way
You can capture the Windows Vista OS as an .wim image with Windows Deployment Tool ImageX.exe. Then use other tools to create a bootable ISO. You would have to update the image though every time you feel there are a lot of changes made in Vista you want to see in VMware.

My operating system is window 8 and I am running mac OS in a Virtual box.I have successfully install the Mac OS on oracle Virtual box but when I used my Pen drive it's not detect in mac OS. I have install external software for USB devices for virtualbox extension pack 4.2.16 but my problem not solved.
Please check my screenshot's. Please Help me and solve my problem...
Thanks you.
I click on Add Filter form device option and select my USB then virtualbox automatic detect this information. Then I ok and run mac OS.
Mac Os start when i go to virtualbox menu and click option on Devices->USB Devices->kingston Data Traveler G3[0100]. when i faced that type of error.
Please solve my problem.
Thanks you.
First of all format your USB device as fat32. Then open virtual box and go to USB option and uncheck the box that says ENABLE USB 2.0 (ECHI) CONTROLLER. And then open mac and connect USB...
It works for me..:)
If a USB Mass Storage device is still claimed by the host OS will not be available for your virtual operating system. I'd recommend right-clicking the drive and select Eject. Then, try to mount the drive on your virtual OS.
I have Oracle Virtual Box installed on my Windows 8 system. I run Windows XP in the Virtual box and occasionally have trouble with it loading my USB thumb drive. The only thing I have found that works it to remove the thumb drive and plug it into a different USB port.
I have also founnd that some USB drives work better when plugged into a USB port on the computer its self rather than plugging it into a USB hub.

I am mostly interested in developing for windows (primary) and a mac.
I have a normal PC and a mac mini, and I want to be able to use a single keyboard, mouse and a monitor with both.
Which kvm software do you recommend?
I was looking for hardware kvms but I am using a 30" lcd which is only supported by 1 belkin kvm and people report it as not working.
http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/
Synergy is a software based KVM. It might take you some time to get it set up, but once you do, you'll love it.
In your case, I think the best software solution is to physically connect the Mac to the monitor, and using Remote Desktop to connect to the PC. You'll have very little display lag and almost zero input lag, compared to VNC.
As an added benefit, you can resize your Remote Desktop window to sit side-by-side with a window on your Mac, so you won't lose context when switching between Mac & Windows.
The only downside is that you'll have to crawl under the desk and swap the DVI cable if the Windows machine fails to boot when something goes wrong. That said, at my office we have a test machine that we've been using exclusively via Remote Desktop/VNC for about 3 or 4 years.
Every machine I use is running in a VM. I connect to the Windows machines via Remote Desktop, and I connect to the Linux machines via the VMware Remote Console.
I use VMWare in spaces, but if I had two boxes like you had I'd use a remote desktop connection.
If what you want is to have one monitor for two machines, then you probably need to either use a hardware DVI switch, or use a VNC/Remote Deskop client to pop in to the other desktop when you need to get there.
Personally, I have a 3 monitor, two machine setup. My main box has 2 monitors, the mouse, and the keyboard. The other box has the third monitor. As mentioned above, I use Synergy to share the keyboard and mouse between machines. In general it works very well.
Keyboard switching hotkey is Scroll Lock twice then up arrow.
