Forward and Backward Fast Fourier Transform, shuift by half period - fftw

I have a simple problem that i'm not managing to solve.
I am simply taking the dft of a periodical sequence of numbers (using the fftw3 in fortran), and I noticed that, when taking the inverse transform, the output is the initial sequence, but shifted by exactly one half of the period. Can someone tell me what is the problem? I think I am missing something in the functioning of the fftw3

How to Scale SPICE Matrix so LU-decomposition doesn't Fail

I am implementing a SPICE solver. I have the following problem: say I put two diodes and a current source in serial (standard diodes). I use MNA and Boost LU-decomposition. The problem is that the nodal matrix becomes very quickly near-singular. I think I have to scale the values but I don't know how and I couldn't find anything on the Internet. Any ideas how to do this scaling?
In the perspective of numerical, there is a scale technique for this kind of near-singular matrices. Basically, this technique is to divide each row of A by the sum (or maximum) of the absolute values in that row. You can find KLU which is a linear solver for circuit simulations for more details.
In perspective of SPICE simulation, it uses so-call Gmin stepping technique to iteratively compute and approach a real answer. You can find this in the documents of a SPICE project QUCS (Quite Universal Circuit Simulator).
Scaling does not help when the matrix has both very large and very small entries.
It is necessary to use some or all of the many tricks that were developed for circuit solver applications. A good start is clipping the range of the exponential and log function arguments to reasonable values -- in most circuits a diode forward voltage is never more than 1V and the diode reverse current not less than 1pA.
Actually, look at all library functions and wrap them in code that makes their arguments and results suitable for circuit-solving purposes. Simple clipping is sometimes good enough, but it is way better to make sure the functions stay (twice) differentiable and continuous.

issue with Ramer–Douglas–Peucker algorithm while drawing a line

I am developing a painting application for the iOS and to get smooth lines i apply the Ramer–Douglas–Peucker algorithm of the samples points.
The algorithm works on the whole vector of points and the result changes as points are added. It causes the result curve to "jump" while user paints.
Is there a known solution to this problem?
I've never implemented or used this algorithm, but I can think of two possible solutions:
Apply the algorithm to discrete sections of the line. That is, wait until the user has drawn 10 points, then run the algorithm on points 0..9. Then wait until the user has drawn the next 10 points and run the algorithm on points 10..19, and so on. One possible caveat is that it could create side-effects at points 10, 20, etc., but I really don't know if it would be noticeable to the user.
Wait until the user is done drawing, then run the algorithm once on the whole line. I've seen this approach used in apps before.
Both of these have the advantage that you're running the algorithm on each point no more than twice (and exactly once in the latter case), whereas if you run the algorithm every time a point is added you end up running it on every previous point every time you add a point, which could have a performance penalty.
Like I said, this isn't an area of expertise for me, but I hope it gives you some ideas.
I doubt this can be avoided at all, for a simple reason: the algorithm cannot guess the future points.
Imagine that you draw the first two points; obviously you will keep them. Now move to a third point. If R-D-P tells you to discard the middle point, you may not because that would cause a jump. And so on. Disallowing the jumps implies that you disallow any deletion !
Maybe you can lessen the psychological effect by drawing both the raw curve, which remains stable, and the smoothed one.
This said, R-D-P maybe not be the best approach for smoothing.

Comparing 2 one dimensional signals

I have the following problem: I have 2 signals over time. They are from the same source so they should be the same. I want to check if they really are.
Complications:
they may be measured with different sample rates
the start / end time do not correlate. The measurement does not start at the same time and end at the same time.
there may be an time offset between the two signals.
My thoughts go along Fourier transformation, convolution and statistical methods for comparison. Can someone post me some links where I can find more information on how to handle this?
You can easily correct for the phase by just shifting them so their centers of mass line up. (Or alternatively, in the Fourier domain just multiplying by the inverse of the phase of the first coefficient.)
Similarly, if you want to line up the images given only partial data, you can just cross correlate and take the maximal value (which is again easy to do in the Fourier domain).
That leaves the only tricky part of this process as dealing with the sampling rates. Now if you know a-priori what the sample rates are, (and if they are related by a rational number), you can just use sinc interpolation/downsampling to rescale them to a common sampling rate:

If you don't know the sampling rate, you may be a bit screwed. Technically, you can try just brute forcing over all the different rescalings of your signal, but doing this tends to be either slow or else give mediocre results.
As a last suggestion, if you just want to match sounds exactly you can try using the cepstrum and verifying that the peaks of the signal are close enough to within some tolerance. This type of analysis is used a lot in sound and speech recognition, with some refinements to make it operate a bit more locally. It tends to work best with frequency modulated data like speech and music:

Fourier transformation does sound like the right way.

If you are working with a linux box and the waveforms that need to be processed have already been recorded, you can try to use the file command to display details about the recording. It gives you the sampling rate when it is invoked on a wav file, though I am not sure what format you are recording in.
If the signals are time-shifted with respect to each other, you may try to convolve one with a delta function with increasing delays and then comparing. On MATLAB, conv and all should be good enough.
These are just 'crude' attempts (almost like hacking at the problem). There may be algorithms that are shift-invariant that may do a better job.

FFT Algorithm: What goes IN/OUT? (re: real-time pitch detection)

I am attempting to extract pitch data from an audio stream. From what I can see, it looks as though FFT is the best algorithm to use.
Rather than digging straight into the math, could someone help me understand what this FFT algorithm does?
Please don't say something obvious like 'FFT extracts frequency data from a raw signal.' I need the next level of detail.
What do I pass in, and what do I get out?
Once I understand the interface clearly, this will help me to understand the implementation.
I take it I need to pass in an audio buffer, I need to tell it how many bytes to use for each computation (say the most recent 1024 bytes from this buffer). and maybe I need to specify the range of pitches I want it to detect. Now it is going to pass back what? An array of frequency bins? What are these?

Performous extracts pitch from the microphone. Also the code is open source. Here is a description of what the algorithm does, from the guy that coded it.
PCM input (with buffering)
FFT (1024 samples at a time, remove 200 samples from front of the buffer afterwards)
Reassignment method (against the previous FFT that was 200 samples earlier)
Filtering of peaks (this part could be done much better or even left out)
Combining peaks into sets of harmonics (we call the combination a tone)
Temporal filtering of tones (update the set of tones detected earlier instead of simply using the newly detected ones)
Pick the best vocal tone (frequency limits, weighting, could use the harmonic array also but I don't think we do)
But could someone help me understand how this works? What is it that is getting sent from the FFT to the Reassignment method?
The FFT is just one building block in the process, and it may not be the best approach for pitch detection. Read up on pitch detection and decide which algo you want to use first (this will depend on what exactly you are trying to measure the pitch of - speech, single musical instrument, other types of sound, etc. Get this right before getting into low level details such as the FFT (some, but not all pitch detection algorithms use the FFT internally).
There are numerous similar questions on SO already, e.g. Real-time pitch detection using FFT and Pitch detection using FFT for trumpet, and there is good overview material on Wikipedia etc - read these and then decide whether you still want to roll your own FFT-based solution or perhaps use an existing library which is suitable for your particular application.
There is an element of choice here. The most straightforward to implement is to do (2^n samples in) complex numbers in, and 2^n complex numbers out, so maybe you should start with that.
In the special case of a DCT(discrete cosine transform), typically what goes in is 2^n samples (often floats), and out go 2^n values, often floats too. DCT is an FFT but that takes only the real values, and analyses the function in terms of cosines.
It is smart (but commonly skipped) to define a struct to handle the complex values. Traditionally FFT's are done in-place, but it works fine if you don't.
It can be useful to instantiate a class that contains a work buffer for the FFT (if you don't want to do the FFT in-place), and reuse that for several FFTs.
In goes N samples of PCM (purely real complex numbers). Out comes N bins of frequency domain (each bin corresponding to a 1/N slice of sample rate). Each bin is a complex number. Rather than real and imaginary parts, these values should generally be handled in polar format (absolute value and argument). The absolute value tells the amount of sound near the bin center frequency while the argument tells the phase (at which position the sine wave is travelling).
Most often coders only use the magnitude (absolute value) and throw away the phase angle (argument).

Smoothing values over time: moving average or something better?

I'm coding something at the moment where I'm taking a bunch of values over time from a hardware compass. This compass is very accurate and updates very often, with the result that if it jiggles slightly, I end up with the odd value that's wildly inconsistent with its neighbours. I want to smooth those values out.
Having done some reading around, it would appear that what I want is a high-pass filter, a low-pass filter or a moving average. Moving average I can get down with, just keep a history of the last 5 values or whatever, and use the average of those values downstream in my code where I was once just using the most recent value.
That should, I think, smooth out those jiggles nicely, but it strikes me that it's probably quite inefficient, and this is probably one of those Known Problems to Proper Programmers to which there's a really neat Clever Math solution.
I am, however, one of those awful self-taught programmers without a shred of formal education in anything even vaguely related to CompSci or Math. Reading around a bit suggests that this may be a high or low pass filter, but I can't find anything that explains in terms comprehensible to a hack like me what the effect of these algorithms would be on an array of values, let alone how the math works. The answer given here, for instance, technically does answer my question, but only in terms comprehensible to those who would probably already know how to solve the problem.
It would be a very lovely and clever person indeed who could explain the sort of problem this is, and how the solutions work, in terms understandable to an Arts graduate.
If you are trying to remove the occasional odd value, a low-pass filter is the best of the three options that you have identified. Low-pass filters allow low-speed changes such as the ones caused by rotating a compass by hand, while rejecting high-speed changes such as the ones caused by bumps on the road, for example.
A moving average will probably not be sufficient, since the effects of a single "blip" in your data will affect several subsequent values, depending on the size of your moving average window.
If the odd values are easily detected, you may even be better off with a glitch-removal algorithm that completely ignores them:

The first graph is the input signal, with one unpleasant glitch. The second graph shows the effect of a 10-sample moving average. The final graph is a combination of the 10-sample average and the simple glitch detection algorithm shown above. When the glitch is detected, the 10-sample average is used instead of the actual value.
If your moving average has to be long in order to achieve the required smoothing, and you don't really need any particular shape of kernel, then you're better off if you use an exponentially decaying moving average:
a(i+1) = tiny*data(i+1) + (1.0-tiny)*a(i)
where you choose tiny to be an appropriate constant (e.g. if you choose tiny = 1- 1/N, it will have the same amount of averaging as a window of size N, but distributed differently over older points).
Anyway, since the next value of the moving average depends only on the previous one and your data, you don't have to keep a queue or anything. And you can think of this as doing something like, "Well, I've got a new point, but I don't really trust it, so I'm going to keep 80% of my old estimate of the measurement, and only trust this new data point 20%". That's pretty much the same as saying, "Well, I only trust this new point 20%, and I'll use 4 other points that I trust the same amount", except that instead of explicitly taking the 4 other points, you're assuming that the averaging you did last time was sensible so you can use your previous work.

There's really no reason a moving average should be inefficient. You keep the number of data points you want in some buffer (like a circular queue). On each new data point, you pop the oldest value and subtract it from a sum, and push the newest and add it to the sum. So every new data point really only entails a pop/push, an addition and a subtraction. Your moving average is always this shifting sum divided by the number of values in your buffer.
It gets a little trickier if you're receiving data concurrently from multiple threads, but since your data is coming from a hardware device that seems highly doubtful to me.

An exponentially decaying moving average can be calculated "by hand" with only the trend if you use the proper values. See http://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/e4/ for an idea on how to do this quickly with a pen and paper if you are looking for “exponentially smoothed moving average with 10% smoothing”. But since you have a computer, you probably want to be doing binary shifting as opposed to decimal shifting ;)
This way, all you need is a variable for your current value and one for the average. The next average can then be calculated from that.
there's a technique called a range gate that works well with low-occurrence spurious samples. assuming the use of one of the filter techniques mentioned above (moving average, exponential), once you have "sufficient" history (one Time Constant) you can test the new, incoming data sample for reasonableness, before it is added to the computation.
some knowledge of the maximum reasonable rate-of-change of the signal is required. the raw sample is compared to the most recent smoothed value, and if the absolute value of that difference is greater than the allowed range, that sample is thrown out (or replaced with some heuristic, eg. a prediction based on slope; differential or the "trend" prediction value from double exponential smoothing)
