How do I get bazel to use a specifc VC++ toolset? - windows

I have a C++ project which uses Bazel as the build tool, and I am primarily developing on windows.
The latest visual studio toolset (VC++ 2017 version 15.9 v14.16 latest) no longer compiles my C++ code correctly (causes an internal compiler error) in the meantime I would like to continue using the previous toolset (VC++ 2017 version 15.8 v14.15 toolset). I am unsure of how to tell bazel which toolset it should use.
To be more specific. My BAZEL_VC variable is set to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Community\VC. There are three folders in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Community\VC\Tools\MSVC, one of which is the latest version, two of which are previous versions. I would like to tell Bazel to use one of the previous version folders somehow.
I also can't seem to revert entirely back to the previous toolset. Nor can I remove the latest toolset while still having the older one function. Since windows views this as a responsibility of the build system, I turn to bazel.

Visual Studio 2022: Cannot open include file: 'ctype.h'

I've got the infamous error message in C++ build: "Cannot open include file: 'ctype.h'". I know a similar question was already asked multiple times, but my case seems different because I am using the latest Visual Studio 2022 and seems to behave differently.
I have a bunch of existing C++ projects, they use plain 32-bit Windows API with DirectX 6, and I used VC++ build tools 2015 and Windows SDK 8.1 to compile it without any issues in previous versions of Visual Studio. Everything was fine in Visual Studio 2019, no special setup was needed, until I uninstalled it and installed Visual Studio 2022.
Now I can open my solutions, it nicely shows they are using C++ build tools 2015, which I installed together with VS2022, and the solutions also shows correctly that they use Windows 8.1 SDK. But Windows 8.1 SDK is not present in VS2022 installation, I installed it separately. I also tried to "repair" VS2022 installation, but that only deleted all my UI preferences, but not fixed anything in build. Also, I tried to reinstall Windows 8.1 SDK, but it said it is already OK.
When looking to Visual Studio, I can't see any place where I can set default include and lib directories, I can only list what is being used right now. VS2022 shows this list:

The actual error message I receive is this:
c:\program files (x86)\windows kits\8.1\include\um\winnt.h(31): fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'ctype.h': No such file or directory
So it says that winnt.h from windows kits 8.1 cannot find ctype.h. And yes, there is no ctype.h in that folder or anywhere around, I can see it only in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\2022\Professional\SDK\ScopeCppSDK\vc15\SDK\include\ucrt
which I think is the folder with VC++ 2015 build tools. So this seems correct, but I am wondering why this folder is not a part of default include directories when VC++ 2015 build tools are set in project settings. Because it seems that VS2022 is correctly picking my Windows 8.1 SDK, but not picking correctly the older C++ compiler.
When I try to add the folder where ctype.h resides to include folders, I receive another type of errors saying that other files are incompatible with these include files. Of course, this system of directories needs to be in sync. So please what is the correct way of using this?
Also, I tried to switch the VC++ build tools to 2022 version. Unfortunately, that also does not fix the issue. And Windows 10 SDK is not installed, the software wants to stay compatible with older Windows, so I don't need it.

Although Microsoft staff declined to accept it as a bug, it is happening for me as well. When I install only Windows 8.1 SDK, no project can be compiled with it. I even tried to create a new Windows API project in VS2022, the project was created, but failed to compile with the same error.
So I tried to install Windows 10 SDK (from VS2022 installed, but that is probably not important) and this added some missing files which now help to compile Windows 8.1 SDK projects. Problem seems to be solved, my old C++ code can now be compiled with Windows 8.1 SDK and both C++ build tools 2015 and 2022.

Qt 5.8 msvc 2015 compile error

I have installed Qt using an offline installer qt-opensource-windows-x86-msvc2015_64-5.8.0. I have visual studio community edition 2017 installed with c++ build tools. because it's compiler was incompatible with the qt version, then I installed visual c++ build tools 2015 from http://landinghub.visualstudio.com/visual-cpp-build-tools . When I try to compile a project it gives an error :-1: error: LNK1158: cannot run 'rc.exe'. Heres how my qt kit looks like,

I've fixed this both on my own machine and on several co-workers machines.
It tends to happen when you have both Visual Studio 2015 and VS 2017 installed. Or more precisely, multiple versions of the Windows SDK installed. When that happens, the vcvars32.bat script (located in your Visual Studio install dir) does not correctly add the location of the resource compiler (rc.exe) to your PATH. Thus, QT Creator runs vcvars32.bat (as specified in Qt Creator under Option->Build&Run->Compilers, but the tools directory for the Windows SDK Kit isn't properly added to the PATH environment.
The simple fix is to add the appropriate version of RC.exe to your path.
Do this from the command line:
cd "c:\program files(x86)"
dir /s rc.exe
You'll get several versions (x86 and x64) and for several versions of the SDK. Add the PATH for where rc.exe lives for the version that corresponds to the SDK and build flavor to your vcvars32.bat startup script.
For example:
PATH="C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\bin\10.0.15063.0\x86";%PATH%
Restart Qt Creator and that should fix it.
Another fix that worked for me is to uninstall all versions of Visual Studio (and all those side installs of SQL, Windows SDKs, dev tools, etc...). Reboot. Then cleanly install VS 2017 again. Then cleanly uninstall and re-install all of Qt again. That seemed to work for me. A wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
If you update to Qt 5.9 it supports MSVC 2017. However, if you want to get it working with 5.8, I believe you might be missing the Windows SDK. You can download the SDK from Microsoft for Windows 7, 8 or 10, just get whichever version is appropriate for you.
With some googling I found a couple of other somewhat related solutions here, & here, and I've summed them up below:
If you've already got the SDK or installed it and it still doesn't work, it appears that copying rc.exe and rcdll.dll from the WindowsSDK folder to your MSVS installs \VC\bin folder may fix the problem. You might also try copying those same two files to Qt's \Qt*version number**compiler version*\bin.

PVS Studio not working with MSVS not installed in default location

Due to disk size constraints, I installed MSVS 2017 to D:\Program Files\Visual Studio.
I then installed PVS-Studio v6.14. When I tried to run it, I get the following error messages:
Error was encountered while opening project 'MIDI2LR.vcxproj'. 0
Exception message: 0
Could not find a part of the path 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\VC'. 0
It also appears that PVS-Studio did install its extensions into the D:\Program Files\Visual Studio\Common7\IDE\Extensions\3ci0fu2p.p0x directory, so it appears that the installer found the executable.
How do I point PVS-Studio to the correct directories?
If I have understood correctly, we are talking about /Builds/VisualStudio2017/MIDI2LR.vcxproj from your repository (develop branch). If you're talking about another project, please specify it. The information is based on the analysis of the project I mentioned before.
Does this project compile on your machine? If a project does not compile, PVS-Studio does not guarantee the analysis. Otherwise, the analysis should be performed correctly. I also note that for the compilation you have to have the components Visual C++ Build Tools 2015 installed (in this context we use the contents of the directory C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\VC).
In this case, such behavior occurs because of your project's file structure – the PlatformToolset property is set with a value v140 before the import of Microsoft.Cpp.Default.props, thus this import is performed based on this toolset. This causes MSBuild to use the compiler from Visual C++ 2015, and not from Visual C++ 2017.
To compile using the compiler from VS2017 (V141 toolset), you need to modify the project file (see example of a console application project file that is created in Visual Studio 2017). Then the compilation should be done with a correct compiler and the analysis with PVS-Studio performed correctly.

Specific the Visual C++ compiler in cmake [duplicate]

After installing Visual Studio 2015 and running CMake on a previous project, CMake errors stating that it could not find the C compiler.
The C compiler identification is unknown
The CXX compiler identification is unknown

I went searching for cl.exe in the Visual Studio folder,C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0, and could not find it.
How do I set up CMake to work on Windows with Visual Studio 2015?
I have found the solution. While the Visual Studio IDE installed successfully it did not install any build tools and therefore did not install the C++ compiler.
By attempting to manually create a C++ project in the Visual Studio 2015 GUI I was able to prompt it to download the C++ packages. CMake was then able to find the compiler without any difficulty.
Here is the solution that worked for me:
Open Visual Studio command prompt tool (as an administrator). On windows 10 it might be called 'Developer command prompt'.
Navigate to where you have the CMake executable
Run Cmake.exe
Proceed as usual to select build and source folder
Select the appropriate Visual Studio compiler and hit the configure button
Hopefully it should run without problems.
I looked in CMakeError.log file and found an error about cannot run 'rc.exe'
I searched and found this answer to copy RC.Exe and RcDll.Dll from the Microsoft SDKs bin to the VC bin, and then CMake worked.
Edit: The top answer to another question suggests that it's a PATH issue, so it could be enough to ensure the Microsoft SDK bin is in your PATH.
Those stumbling with this on Visual Studio 2017: there is a feature related to CMake that needs to be selected and installed together with the relevant compiler toolsets. See the screenshot below.
Make sure you are using the correct version of Visual Studio in the generator. I had incorrectly selected Visual Studio 15 when Visual Studio 14 installed.
If none of the above solutions worked, then stop and do a sanity check.
I got burned using the wrong -G <config> string and it gave me this misleading error.
First, run from the VS Command Prompt not the regular command prompt. You can find it in
Start Menu -> Visual Studio 2015 -> MSBuild Command Prompt for VS2015 This sets up all the correct paths to VS tools, etc.
Now see what generators are available from cmake...
cmake -help

Then chose the appropriate string with the [arch] added.
mkdir _build

Running cmake in a subdirectory makes it easier to do a 'clean' since you can just delete everything in that directory.
I upgraded to Visual Studio 15 but wasn't paying attention and was trying to generate for 2012.
For me, I checked the CMakeError.log file and found:
[...] error MSB8036: The Windows SDK version 8.1 was not found. Install the required version of Windows SDK or change the SDK version in the project property pages or by right-clicking the solution and selecting "Retarget solution".
This is despite using Visual Studio 2017 on Windows 7. So it appears that CMake is trying to build its detection project with the Windows 8.1 SDK.
I used the Visual Studio installer to add that component and now CMake is happy as a clam.
Menu → Visual Studio 2015 → MSBuild Command Prompt for Visual Studio 2015. Then CMake can find cl.exe.

Change the upper path to where your Windows SDK is installed.
CMake can find rc.exe.
cd to the path of CMakeLists.txt and do:
md .build
cd .build
cmake .. -G "Visual Studio 14 2015 Win64" -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release
cmake --build .
The param after -G should be fetched by CMake. Use --help; you may or may not have the generator.
I ran into the same issue and fixed it by relaunching the Visual Studio Install and checking the following option:
Windows and Web Development / Universal Windows App Development Tools / Windows 10 SDK
It contains the standard C++ headers used in most applications and therefore it is often necessary to install it as well.
I had this issue under Windows 10 when using Visual Studio 2015 Professional, while Visual Studio 2015 Express worked! Under Windows 7, both Visual Studio versions used to work.
New projects created from the Visual Studio 2015 Professional IDE successfully compile, but CMake would fail to find the compiler reporting:
The C compiler identification is unknown
The CXX compiler identification is unknown
I upgraded CMake from 3.4.1 to 3.11.4, and now the problem is gone.
If you are on Visual Studio 2017 you need at least CMake 3.8!
I had a similar problem with the Visual Studio 2017 project generated through CMake. Some of the packages were missing while installing Visual Studio in Desktop development with C++. See snapshot:

Checking CMakeErrors.log in CMakeFiles returned:
C:\Program Files
(x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft.Cpp\v4.0\V140\Platforms\x64\PlatformToolsets\v140_xp\Toolset.targets(36,5): warning MSB8003: Could not find WindowsSdkDir_71A variable from the
registry. TargetFrameworkVersion or PlatformToolset may be set to an
invalid version number.
The error means that the build tools for XP (v140_xp) are not installed. To fix it I installed the proper feature in Visual Studio 2019 installer under Individual Components tab:
I was running old cmake version (i.e. 3.8) and I'm using visual studio 16 - 2019. After updating my cmake version, it did detect the compiler.
In my case there was an environment variable set which was the reason for this error.
The problem was solved after deleting cxx_flags from the environment variables.
I got this problem with CMake 3.12.1, after an update of Visual Studio 2017. I simply re-ran CMake and it worked.
In my case I could see in the CMakeError.log that CMake could not find the Windows SDK (MSB8003: Could not find WindowsSDKDir variable from the registry).
The version can be specified on the commandline on the first CMake run using:
-DCMAKE_VS_WINDOWS_TARGET_PLATFORM_VERSION=
I got further after setting that, but I hit more issues later (so I assume my environment is messed up somehow), but maybe it will help someone with this issue.
A couple of tips:
Try to set the path manually by checking 'advanced' and modifying CMAKE_LINKER and CMAKE_MAKE_PROGRAM
Delete the cache - in the CMake with GUI go to:
File → Delete Cache.
My problem was a combination of previously stated: I have set the compiler version to 15 instead of 14 and when corrected, I had to delete the cache.
I also started the Visual Studio command prompt as an administrator and from there I ran the cmake-gui.exe
Then everything worked as it was supposed to.
In my case the issue was that the parent project, which is including googletest via
add_subdirectory(gtest_dir)
was defined as
PROJECT( projname CXX )
Somehow, CMake does not recognize
PROJECT(sub_project_name CXX C)
since the C compiler is not set in the parent.
I solved the issue by using
PROJECT( projname CXX C)
in my main CMakeLists.txt file.

None of the previous solutions worked for me. However I noticed that although I installed Visual Studio version 15 (not to be confused with Visual Studio 2015) the directory created on my computer was for Visual Studio 14.
When I specified Visual Studio 14 when I pressed the configuration button it worked.

if you have a windows 10 OS, doing the following steps will fix the problem:
1) go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.1A\Bin
2) then copy RC.exe and RcDll from this file
3) go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\VC\bin and paste the two files you have copied into it.

Look in the Cmakelists.txt if you find ARM you need to install C++ for ARM and as well vcvarsall.bat use for ARM bin folder.
It's these packages:
C++ Universal Windows Platform for ARM64 "Not Required"

Visual C++ Compilers and libraries for ARM64 "Very Likely Required"
Required for finding Threads on ARM

Then the problems might disappear:
No CMAKE_C_COMPILER could be found.
No CMAKE_CXX_COMPILER could be found.
If above does not resolve your problem?
Optionally you can remove the options C and CXX in cmakelists.txt by setting # infront of where the enable_language(C) is. And avoid Android ARM processor compilation.

I had a related problem: the Visual C++ generators were not even on the list when running cmake --help.
I ran where cmake in console and found that cygwin also provides its own cmake.exe file, which was being used. Changing the order of directories in PATH fixed the problem.
I had this issue with CMake GUI and the VS 21019 Community Edition. I think I may have installed CMake before Visual Studio - certainly after I updated CMake 3.15.2 to 3.15.3 the problem went away.
Check name folder too long or not.
This question is old, but none of the solutions here were working for me. I'm using Visual Studio 2019, and in my case, C++ compilation was working but just broke one day.
However, I noticed that there was an update ready to be installed in the Visual Studio Installer.
After installing that update, rebooting my computer, and relaunching Visual Studio, all of the C++ CMake problems disappeared. I'm not quite sure why this fixed it, and I can only speculate, but I can only assume that one of two things occurred. Either installing that update fixed a broken installation, or the update was quietly downloaded and prepared in the background, breaking things in the process.

Where can I find the TypeScript version installed in Visual Studio?

Maybe it's obvious, but I checked everywhere (besides the right place) and googled it. Nothing.
If you only have TypeScript installed for Visual Studio then:
Start the Visual Studio Command Prompt
Type tsc -v and hit Enter
Visual Studio 2017 versions 15.3 and above bind the TypeScript version to individual projects, as this answer points out:
Right click on the project node in Solution Explorer
Click Properties
Go to the TypeScript Build tab
Two years after the question was asked, using Visual Studio Command Prompt still did not produce right answer for me. But the usual Help|About window seems working these days:
UPDATE (June 2017):
VS 2013 does NOT show this info. (Later note: VS 2017 Enterprise edition does not show this info either).
VS uses Microsoft Build Engine (MSBuild) to compile Typescript files. MSBuild can support several major releases of Typescript, but About window shows only the latest one.
Here is how to get to the bottom of it:
A. To check which versions of Typescript are installed with your Visual Studio/MSBuild, inspect contents of C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\TypeScript folder. For example, I have versions 1.0, 1.8 and 2.2:
B. Check which version of Typescript is requested by your project. In *.csproj file, look for <TypeScriptToolsVersion> tag, or you can add it if it is missing, like this

<TypeScriptToolsVersion>1.8</TypeScriptToolsVersion>

</PropertyGroup>
C. Finally, you can check, which version of Typescript is actually used by MSBuild. In TOOLS | Options | Projects and Solutions | Build and Run set MSBuild project output verbosity to Detailed:
Then build your project and inspect the output: you should see the reference to one of Typescript folders described in (A).

If you update your Visual Studio to a new version of Typescript as 1.0.x you don't see the last version here. To see the last version:
Go to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\TypeScript, there you see directories of type 0.9, 1.0 1.1
Enter the high number that you have (in this case 1.1)
Copy the directory and run in CMD the command tsc -v, you get the
version.
NOTE: Typescript 1.3 install in directory 1.1, for that it is important to run the command to know the last version that you have installed.
NOTE: It is possible that you have installed a version 1.3 and your code use 1.0.3. To avoid this if you have your Typescript in a separate(s) project(s) unload the project and see if the Typescript tag:

is set to 1.1.

TypeScript version 1.4, 1.5 .. 1.7 install in 1.4, 1.5... 1.7 directories. they are not problem to found version. if you have typescript in separate project and you migrate from a previous typescript your project continue to use the old version. to solve this:
unload the project file and change the typescript version to 1.x at:
<TypeScriptToolsVersion>1.x</TypeScriptToolsVersion>
If you installed the typescript using the visual studio installer file, the path to the new typescript compiler should be automatically updated to point to 1.x directory. If you have problem, review that you environment variable Path include

SUGGESTION TO MICROSOFT :-) Because Typescript run side by side with other version, maybe is good to have in the project properties have a combo box to select the typescript compiler (similar to select the net version)
The tsc -v command run technically reads the TypeScript compiler version within the SDK directory set within the Windows Path variable. This doesn't necessarily reflect the latest version installed as the Path variable is not updated with subsequent installations.
The version that VS.NET uses to compile the TypeScript is what's in the project's configuration:
<TypeScriptToolsVersion>1.5</TypeScriptToolsVersion>

I also added a feature request on Microsoft Connect to make viewing and switching the TypeScript targeted version in VS.NET easier. This isn't really a TypeScript feature request as much as it is a VS.NET IDE enhancement.
Allow switching TypeScript configured version from Project Properties IDE
The TypeScript team sorted this out in Visual Studio 2017 versions 15.3 and later, including the free Community edition.
How to See Which TypeScript Versions are Installed in Visual Studio
All you now need do is to go to project properties of any TypeScript Visual Studio project (right-click the project file in Solution Explorer/Properties), then go to the TypeScript Build tab on the left-hand side. This has a 'Typescript version' dropdown that shows you the version the project is using, and if you open it the dropdown shows you ALL versions of TypeScript currently installed in Visual Studio.
The actual installs are currently at C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\TypeScript and then subfolders by version number, at least on Win10 on my computer. If you want to see the exact version (e.g. 2.8.3 rather than just 2.8) you can find the appropriate tsc.exe in here and look at its properties (Details tab in right-click/Properties in File Explorer).
How to Install Specific TypeScript Version
If you want to install a specific version of TypeScript then these can be found on Visual Studio Marketplace, although specific version numbers can be a little difficult to find in that list. A Google search for, for example, 'visual studio marketplace typescript 3.3.1' will usually find the exact version you want. If you install from here and restart Visual Studio the version will appear in the dropdown. Note also that some of the latest versions of TypeScript (e.g. 4.2) will refuse to install if there's a more recent version installed.
Node.js Console Applications
This answer does not apply to the 'Node.js Console Application' project type, which doesn't have a TypeScript Build tab in project properties. This is because it uses a version of TypeScript installed in the project folder using npm. The version can be seen and changed in the package.json file, and when installed appears under the npm entry in Solution Explorer, and in the node_modules/typescript folder on disk.
On Visual Studio 2015 just go to: help/about Microsoft Visual Studio
Then you will see something like this:

You can run it in NuGet Package Manager Console in Visual Studio 2013.
As far as I understand VS has nothing to do with TS installed by NPM.
(You may notice after you install TS using NPM, there is no tsc.exe file).
VS targets only tsc.exe installed by TS for VS extension, which installes TS to c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\TypeScript\X.Y.
You may have multiple folders under c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\TypeScript.
Set TypeScriptToolsVersion to the highest version installed.
In my case I had folders "1.0", "1.7", "1.8", so I set TypeScriptToolsVersion = 1.8, and if you run tsc - v inside that folder you will get 1.8.3 or something, however, when u run tsc outside that folder, it will use PATH variable pointing to TS version installed by NPM, which is in my case 1.8.10.
I believe TS for VS will always be a little behind the latest version of TS you install using NPM. But as far as I understand, VS doesnt know anything about TS installed by NPM, it only targets whateve versions installed by TS for VS extensions, and the version specified in TypeScriptToolsVersion in your project file.
I have VS2015 and I have to run a build with TypeScript 1.7, although I have 1.8 installed via npm install typescript -g there are two ways (at least for me they worked):
Go to your .proj file and add <TypeScriptToolsVersion>1.7</TypeScriptToolsVersion> as up as possible. Rebuild, re-run. If it doesn't work try 2.
Go to Control Panel -> System -> Advanced System Settings -> Enviroment Variables. Make sure you add your desired TypeScript version first: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\TypeScript\1.7;C:\Users\serban\AppData\Roaming\npm
This will also affect your CLI:
$ tsc -v
message TS6029: Version 1.7.5
First, make sure you have the following address in your Environment Variables Path
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\TypeScript\2.0
Then open your Command Prompt and type the following command:
tsc -v
You can do npm list | grep typescript if it's installed through npm.
Open a (normal, not the VS) command prompt or a PowerShell prompt.
tsc.exe -v
tsc.cmd -v
tsc -v
If you installed the same version of TypeScript for Visual Studio and using npm, the output from the above three commands should be the same.
If not, check your System PATH to see where in the path hierarchy and which typescript directory is listed. For PowerShell users, the easy way is:
$env:path -split ';'
Be careful of having nothing or multiple TypeScript directories listed in your System PATH variable. As of June 9, 2017, my System PATH looked like this (just the top part, which is all that matters in this situation):

Notice that only the 2.3 directory is included in the PATH, not multiple versions.
In the command prompt, simply type 1 of the following command then hit Enter :
tsc -v
or
tsc -version
or
tsc --version

For a non-commandline approach, you can open the Extensions & Updates window (Tools->Extensions and Updates) and search for the Typescript for Microsoft Visual Studio extension under Installed
If you'd like to find out what version of Typescript is being used on a particular project, go to your package-lock.json file. You will find something like this:

"version": "3.5.3"

As of Visual Studio 2022, there is a new TypeScript/JavaScript project type for Angular/React/Vue, the TypeScript SDK is deprecated (but still installable through the VS installer with warnings), and Visual Studio supposedly provides IntelliSense and language support based on the TypeScript version you're using for your project (npm is the preferred way to specify the version of TypeScript you're using, via your package.json file).
Per this answer, though, there are still questions about how to control/discern what specific TypeScript language version Visual Studio 2022 is supporting at any given moment.
