I am wondering how I can use a dynamic variable in the Path field of a HTTP request . I am able to use User Defined Variables, but they are static, I need to use a variable that extracts some unpredictable value from the response of a previous HTTP request. I.e. the URL in the below scenario resolves literally to /this/and/that.jspx?param1=${testvar} , so you can see ${testvar} is not being substituted. How do I get ${testvar}, a variable created during regex extraction in a previous HTTP Request, to be substituted?
FYI I am using JMeter 2.11 and upgrading may not be an option (corporate policies... )
JMeter Variables resolution/substitution works normally no matter of JMeter version, I can think of 2 possible reasons:
You're looking into wrong place. You should be inspecting Request tab of the View Results Tree listener in order to see the actual URL
Your ${testvar} variable is not defined, i.e. Regular Expression Extractor fails to extract the required value. You can double check it using Debug Sampler:

I do a POST request using Jmeter and I parse the JSON response using the JSON extractor. When i use the debug sampler I could see the Variable is assigned with the value properly but that value goes as null in the subsequent request
Below is the request URL for the next sample /XXX/XXX/XXX/XX/${recordingjobid}
but this value recordingjobid is not substituted with the value.
I can only think of not proper placement of the JSON Extractor.
For example if you have it at the same level as several samplers - it will be run after every of them (including the Debug Sampler) and each next one will be overwriting the value set by the previous one as JMeter Variables are local to the thread and don't allow duplicates.
So my expectation is that if you move the JSON Extractor to be a child of the request which returns the JSON - it should resolve your issue.

I'm trying to extract variables returned from one HTTP request, use them in a second HTTP request then extract the variables returned from the second HTTP request.
I then need to use both the first extracted and second extracted variables in a third HTTP request.
I can extract the variables from the first HTTP request and use these in the second HTTP request but cant seem to get the variables extracted from the second HTTP request to then use in the third HTTP request.
Is it even possible to do this?

It should be straightforward and possible as long as both extractors are going into unique variable names. The Debug Postprocessor will show you the values stored in each variable after a test run. What do you see in those in the context of the third http request?

Most probably your Regular Expression Extractor fails as your quotation marks look utterly suspicious. You can double check if the token variable really has the anticipated value using Debug Sampler and View Results Tree listener combination. Also check out jmeter.log file for any suspicious entries, if your Beanshell script fails - the cause will be printed there.
The response data of the Login Page seems to be JSON therefore it makes sense to use the JSON Extractor instead of the Regular Expression Extractor. It allows using JSON Path language in order to extract "interesting" bits of data from the responses. In your case the relevant JSON Path expression would be $.access_token
Since JMeter 3.1 it's recommended to use JSR223 Test Elements and Groovy language for scripting so consider migrating to the JSR223 PreProcessor and Groovy language (you can re-use the same code)
You don't even need the scripting, you can add Authorization header (as well as any other header) using HTTP Header Manager
Could you add debug sampler and try first to confirm your regular expression extractor working as expected? It should provide you the required value of token.
If your token has the required value, I will suggest you to add HTTP Header Manager config element by right clicking on HTTP sampler
HTTP Request => Add => Config Element => HTTP Header Manager
In this config element, you can visually add the Headers as below:

My task is to make a request and save some data from the headers in a variable and use it later in another requests.
So I've added an http request and added an regular expression extractor. Here is my setup:
And then I've created another request and I'm using the LocationToken variable, but there the variable has the default value (dd). here is the response:
So, as you can see, the pattern patches on the headers. So what have I done wrong?
In Regular Expression Extractor, under Apply to section, you should select Main sampler and sub-samplers option but not JMeter Variable.
Regular Expression Extractor saves the value into the variable which we specified in Reference Name field.

I have a series of interconnected pages to test using JMeter. The problem is that the initial page has a Javascript variable in source section which is more of a session variable. This variable is passed in the URL for subsequent pages.
So basically I would like to fetch this javascript variable when I load the initial page from the source section and pass it to next URL(s).
Is there a way I can achieve this using JMeter.
Are you able to see the session variable in the response of initial page?

If yes, then correlate this value and pass the variable in to next request (use regular expression extractor for fetching the value, still if you are finding some issue in correlating the value than please share the response of first request over here so that I can provide you regx for that)
People mostly Regular Expression Extractor to fetch dynamic values from previous responses, in general the process looks like:
Add Regular Expression Extractor as a child of the request which returns desired data
Use Perl5-style regular expression to match what you're looking for
Provide a template to choose match group - ususally $1$ if you looking for a single value
Provide a reference name to refer the extracted value, i.e. foo
Use extracted value as ${foo} where required
You can visualise JMeter Variables using Debug Sampler and View Results Tree listener combination.
The easiest way to debug your regular expressions is using View Results Tree listener in "RegExp Tester mode"
