unable to run a gem through terminal - ruby

I uploaded my first gem into rubygems. The code is tested and the gemspec is fine. It is in rubygems and rubydoc. I installed it on my machine via gem install [gem_name]. gem list lists it. However [gem_name] command yields gem_name: command not found.
YET: gem '[gem_name]','~>[version_num]' yields: ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::CommandLineError)
Unknown command gem_name,~>version_num
(aside: I could've sworn when I first published I played with it and gem_name worked flawlessly to run my gem...)
what can I do to diagnose this problem? Please advise.
EDIT: require '[gem_name]' works flawlessly in IRB. It runs smoothly (interacts with user). Once finished, it returns true. When I require other gems, eg require '[another_gem]' true is returned immediately. The code doesn't actually run. Perhaps this shed some light?

gem gem_name or gem_name is not a command. If you are trying to check if the gem installed properly, try gem_name -v. Also, depends on what flags and args your gem takes.
You are getting that error becausegem gem_name is not a command.
For eg: You do a gem install rails. Then you don't just do gem rails to run it. You do rails some_command or flag, etc. Like rails new blog.

Do other gems run properly? If not, the issue may be with your path. If you run the gem from the folder it is located in, does it still yield problems? Hope this helps!

Trying to put bundle in PATH

I'm working on a Ruby project that requires the use of a few gems. I'm a bit confused, since I thought I already had bundler installed on my Mac. I tried installing it just now and got the following error:
Leias-MacBook-Pro:spec leia$ gem install bundler
ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::FilePermissionError)
You don't have write permissions for the /Library/Ruby/Gems/2.3.0 directory.
I then tried using --user-install, a trick I picked up from browsing Stack Overflow.
Leias-MacBook-Pro:spec leia$ gem install bundler --user-install
WARNING: You don't have /Users/leia/.gem/ruby/2.3.0/bin in your PATH, gem executables will not run.
Successfully installed bundler-2.0.2
Parsing documentation for bundler-2.0.2
Done installing documentation for bundler after 5 seconds
1 gem installed
Now, I kind of need the gem executables to run, so I opened my .bash_profile and dropped the following code in:
export PATH=/Users/leia/.gem/ruby/2.3.0/bin:$PATH
But no matter how I try to fix it, bundle still won't run. The gem I'm installing is rspec, and I definitely need to be able to run those executables. Am I doing something wrong here? I've tried to follow tutorials and Google similar issues, but I can't figure out what the problem is. Any pointers or suggestions?

Error message when trying to create Gemfile

Can someone please break down the very very beginnings of how to run a Gemfile. I've read the Bundler webiste and it says I have to type "Gem Install Bundler" then source "https://rubygems.org". Everytime I do that I get an error message saying "Source is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I've tried creating an empty gemfile first by typing "bundle init" but when I type my source, I get the error message. I also found some literature about telling it to look in github and tried to direct it to the actual project in github but it gave me the same error message.
I am completely new to coding but have to run some gems off a file in github to test my answers on some questions I've been given. There's a gemfile on the github page with this in it:
source 'https://rubygems.org'
gem rspec
gem pry
Any help for an absolute beginner is much appreciated.
You need to use source 'http://rubygems.org' not https:// which isn't supported yet
Run
gem install bundler
then you can author a Gemfile like
source 'https://rubygems.org'
gem 'rspec'
gem 'pry'
after this, you may run
bundle install
and as an outcome rspec and pry gems will be installed in your system.
You have more information about Gemfiles in Bundler official documentation.
Also, bear in mind that you are installing those gems system-wide, this might cause dependency problems and/or version problems if you have more projects where those gems are required. If that is the case, I recommend you using something to control Ruby versions and gemsets, for example RVM.

Ruby rspec test command: could not locate Gemfile

I just installed Ruby 1.9.3 on Windows 7 and I also installed rubygems. I'm trying to work with rspec so I ran:
gem install rspec
It seemed to work well and everything installed. SO I went on to try the example on this page. But anytime I run the rspec command I get this error message:
"Could not locate Gemfile".
According to the example, I should get: "./bowling_spec.rb:4:
uninitialized constant Bowling"
I've googled it and it was suggested I try bundle exec rspec but it still yielded the same results.
I have also tried the suggestion on this page but it yields the same results. What am I doing wrong? Thanks
Create the Gemfile with this content. Gemfile can have no extension or .gem extension
source 'https://rubygems.org'
gem 'rspec'
so you have
app/
Gemfile or Gemfile.gem
spec/
bowling_spec.rb
Also you might need to execute this commands after
gem install bundler
and then, in the app directory
bundle install
gem install rspec in the same directory as your app and
change require statement to require './bowling.rb'

What is the easyest way to use gems in a macruby application, in XCode?

I need to include a rubygem in a simple macruby application i am creating in XCode. Using require 'rubygems' does not give an error, but the next line to require any other gems has a load error. I installed the gems using macgems. Thanks in advance.
The load error might be an indication that the gem doesn't work on Macruby. Post the error and someone might have more info on that gem or that error.
Did the gem actually install correctly? If it did install, does it work from the command line? Try creating a simple script that requires rubygems and your gem and run that on the command line outside of xcode and see if the problem is compatibility with that gem.
A while back in the 0.5 days I had this problem with a gem (miniexif iirc) that would install via macgems but not load or run. This might be a similar problem.

Error installing gems that use native extensions on Ubuntu, Ruby 1.9.2 via RVM

I get an error while trying to install the ffi gem:
~ - 16:54>gem i ffi
Building native extensions. This could take a while...
ERROR: Error installing ffi:
ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension.

Gem files will remain installed in /home/mdemare/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p136/gems/ffi-1.0.6 for inspection.
Results logged to /home/mdemare/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p136/gems/ffi-1.0.6/gen/gem_make.out
I'm getting frequent errors of all kinds while installing gems with native extensions, so I assume that there's something broken with my Ubuntu installation, but I've no idea what. I'll post any information you need to diagnose the problem.
EDIT: When I cd to the ffi gem (mentioned in the second but last line), and run the rake line in line 6, I get "Could not find RubyGem rake-compiler".
After gem i rake-compiler, and run rake again, I get this:
configure: error: source directory already configured; run "make distclean" there first
make: *** [/home/mdemare/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p136/gems/ffi-1.0.6/build/x86_64-linux/ffi_c/1.9.2/libffi/.libs/libffi_convenience.a] Error 1
rake aborted!
Command failed with status (2): [make...]
Update:
These are my rake gemspecs:
~ - 10:59>find ~/.rvm/ -name 'rake-0.8.7.gemspec'
~/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p136/specifications/rake-0.8.7.gemspec
~/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p136#global/specifications/rake-0.8.7.gemspec
~/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.2-p136/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/specifications/rake-0.8.7.gemspec
The last one is where gem looks, but that gemspec is different from the first one, and doesn't include the executable. Copying the long one doesn't quite solve the problem though - I get a file not found for the rake executable.
This caused me a ton of aggravation at the Boston Hack Day when trying to install Vagrant (for which FFI is a dependency). I ended up wasting so much time that I switched machines to work around the problem.
After the fact, I found a hack that works (although I'm sure there's a better solution). The file that the error message is complaining about
~/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/bin/rake
differs from other similar copies in that it's missing path setup stuff at the head, so I copied these lines from one of the files that had them:
[genericized per #danv's answer below. Thanks for the improvement!]
ENV['GEM_HOME']=ENV['GEM_HOME'] || '~/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180'
ENV['GEM_PATH']=ENV['GEM_PATH'] || '~/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180:~/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180#global'
ENV['PATH']='~/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/bin:~/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180#global/bin:~/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.2-p180/bin:' + ENV['PATH']
That fixed it for me. This was a new Ubuntu 10.10 install with no default Ruby installation (which could be part of the problem) and Ruby 1.9.2 installed using RVM. Lots of other gems installed fine, including those requiring native compilation, so the problem is something specific to FFI.
I had a similar problem, and a workaround at http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=529663 helped me.
In short, try to install the gem with:
$ rake=/usr/bin/rake gem install ffi
#Tom Morris - Tried your method and it worked fine.
I inserted your path specs (modified - see below) into ~/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/bin/rake after line 12.
I modified the path specs so they are generic using ~ for the user home:
ENV['GEM_HOME']=ENV['GEM_HOME'] || "~/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180"
ENV['GEM_PATH']=ENV['GEM_PATH'] || "~/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180:~/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180#global"
ENV['PATH']="~/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/bin:~/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180#global/bin:~/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.2-p180/bin:"+ ENV['PATH']
Thanks for finding this fix!
Thanks #Tim Morris and #danv, your answers / comments helped. I adjusted for my setup, which is based more towards a superuser environment. Now this is what /usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/bin/rake looks like on my server:
require 'rubygems'
version = ">= 0"
ENV['GEM_HOME']=ENV['GEM_HOME'] || "/usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180"
ENV['GEM_PATH']=ENV['GEM_PATH'] || "/usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180:/usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180#global"
if ARGV.first =~ /^_(.*)_$/ and Gem::Version.correct? $1 then
version = $1
ARGV.shift
end
gem 'rake', version
load Gem.bin_path('rake', 'rake', version)
The installer attempts to run rake but fails when it isn't found:
can't find gem rake ([">= 0"]) with executable rake (Gem::GemNotFoundException)
You need to install the rake gem: gem install rake.
