I am trying to integrate BEM into my sass. I am also using Gulp. When I don't use BEM my code works fine. When I include BEM, the code no longer works.
Here is my HTML with out BEM.
<div class="wrapper">
<ul class="stage">
<li class="scene">
<div class="movie">
<div class="poster"></div>
</div>
</li>
</ul>
</div>
Here is my SASS
.wrapper{
margin: 100px auto;
max-width: 960px;
.stage{
list-style: none;
padding: 0;
.scene {
width: 260px;
height: 400px;
margin: 30px;
float: left;
perspective: 1000px;
}
}
}
Here is my HTML using BEM
<div class="wrapper">
<ul class="stage">
<li class="stage__scene">
<div class="movie">
<div class="poster"></div>
</div>
</li>
</ul>
</div>
Here is my SASS with BEM
.wrapper{
margin: 100px auto;
max-width: 960px;
.stage{
list-style: none;
padding: 0;
&__scene {
width: 260px;
height: 400px;
margin: 30px;
float: left;
perspective: 1000px;
}
}
}
I am new to BEM so I am pretty sure I am missing something obvious. Please let me know.
I'm unsure what "no longer works". But your CSS / SASS code doesn't conform to BEM. BEM deliberately limits the use of cascading. Because blocks are independent, a block (.stage) shouldn't be styled as a descendant of another block (.wrapper).
Here is a BEM-compliant SASS code:
.wrapper{
margin: 100px auto;
max-width: 960px;
}
.stage{
list-style: none;
padding: 0;
&__scene {
width: 260px;
height: 400px;
margin: 30px;
float: left;
perspective: 1000px;
}
}
See also: the official BEM methodology.
I don't think this is a BEM issue, but an "issue" with SASS compiler. I don't know that you can do class concatenation like that. The way you have the sass written is looking for a div with 2 separate classes, stage and __scene on the same element, not a single class called stage__scene on a nested element.
Your sass should look like this:
.wrapper{
margin: 100px auto;
max-width: 960px;
.stage{
list-style: none;
padding: 0;
.stage__scene {
width: 260px;
height: 400px;
margin: 30px;
float: left;
perspective: 1000px;
}
}
}

I placed in a code that works perfectly in dreamweaver into the source code area of Buildfire and for some reason the image is not showing up. I need help with this The code is below:
Your code seems to run just fine, screenshot below:
Maybe a problem retrieving the image? I'd check the network traffic in Safari or Google Chrome and see if the image being requested or not.
If it is being requested then check if you're getting any status code errors. If it is not being requested try adding more information.
I have a section on a site that I have multiple image blocks. I have two columns with multiple rows. For some reason the margin and width are not being applied to these images. I have the following code in my media query for a viewport of 640px or less. Whenever you drag the corner of the page, the images do not scale in size at all. Also the left images stay in place instead of moving with the margin.
It is under the part called Site Sponsors in a viewport of 640px or less.
What is causing the images to not scale in height and width as well as the margin?
As you can see I have the images width defined in a percentage basis:
.b_250 img {
width: 55%;
height: auto;
}
.b_250 iframe {
width: 55%;
height: auto;
}
As well as the margin defined:
.sponsors {
width: 100%;
margin: 0 2.5%;
}
Does anyone see what I am doing wrong?
<div id="sponsor-left">
<div class="b_250">
<img src="images/Contractor Images/PMC spray foam equipment for sale.jpg">
</div>
<div class="b_250">
<img src="images/Contractor Images/Green Insulation Technology 300x200.jpg">

#latestnews {
width: 100%;
text-align: center;
}
#latestnews .latestnews h2{
margin: 10px 5%;
font-size: 1.3em;
width: 90%;
}
#latestnews ul, #latestnews li{
text-align: center;
}
#latestnews li{
margin: 0 auto;
}
.latestnews img{
margin: 0 auto;
text-align: center;
}
#latestnews div.latestnews{
float:none;
width: 100%;
}
#latestnews p {
padding: 20px 10px;
clear: both;
}
#latestnews p.readmore{margin-top:10px; text-align:center;}
.column .sponsors {
width: 100%;
}
.column {
clear: both;
width: 100%;
margin: 0 auto;
}
.column .sponsors .b_250{
border: none;
}
.b_250 img {
width: 55%;
height: auto;
}
.b_250 iframe {
width: 55%;
height: auto;
}
.sponsors {
width: 100%;
margin: 0 2.5%;
}
.sponsors h2{
margin: 10px 5%;
font-size: 1.3em;
width: 90%;
text-align: center;
}
#sponsor-left {
float: left;
width: 45%;
}
#sponsor-right {
float: right;
width: 45%;
}
}
To center the ads, add this(although I prefer to avoid using ID's in selectors):
#sponsor-left a > img { margin: 0 auto; }
At which point you can then increase the width of the images to 100% to fill the width you declared for the left and right columns.
Also as I noted in the comments remove the float: right; and change to display: inline-block;
try display:block max-width:100%; height:auto;
for image to be center
You must use display:block or display:inline-block by default image is display:inline
How to center?
if your image is display:block use margin-left:auto; and margin-right:auto;
and for display:inline-block give text-align:center to image parent element
Note
Be care full your image css does not have float:left or float:right
i'm creating this base structure :
<ul>
<li>
<a>
blabla
</a>
</li>
</ul>
with css :
ul{
height: 100%;
list-style: none outside none;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
}
ul li{
height: 25%;
text-align: right;
width: 100%;
}
a{
display: block;
float: right;
height: 75%;
padding-right: 2%;
position: relative;
width: 98%;
padding-top:25%;
}
i can't manage to simply put the a at the bottom...
i thought giving the A a height of 25% and a padding of 75% would work but it takes 75% of the UL and not 75% of the LI.
anyone has an idea how come?
thanks a lot
What exactly are you trying to achieve?
If I am assuming correctly you want an <li> that is 25% the height of its container and the <a> to sit at the bottom-right of the <li>
If that is the case you could use this css
updated RE comment In this case we could use a <span> inside the <a> to position the text and set the <a> to fill the <li>
ul {
height: 100%;
list-style: none outside none;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
background-color: red;
}
li {
height: 25%;
text-align: right;
width: 100%;
}
a {
display: block;
position: relative;
height: 100%;
width: 100%;
background-color: blue;
}
span {
display: block;
position: absolute;
bottom: 0;
padding: 2%;
width: 96%;
background-color: green;
}
and the html
<ul>
<li><span>blabla</span></li>
</ul>
Fiddle here
Please note that for this to work you need to set html, body { height:100%; } or have a container with an explicit height set. i.e. ul { height: 200px; } or div.container { height: 200px; }
I would also recommend applying the styles via classes.
html code:
<div class="container">
<a class="ank">
<img src="http://www.w3schools.com/images/w3schoolslogoNEW310113.gif" />
</a>
</div>
css code:
.ank
{
display: block;
width: 500px;
height: 500px;
line-height: 100%;
}
img
{
vertical-align: middle;
}
.container
{
display:block;
width: 500px;
height: 500px;
border: 1px solid black;
font-size: 500px;
}
jsfiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/mfBZZ/5/
if i change the jsfiddle, so that anks line-height is 500px, and remove the font-size from container, it works.
but when i add the font-size to container of 500px, and then make the line-height in ank, 100% of that font-size, it doesn't work. it brings the image alittle lower than where it should be.
working jsfiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/eujFY/1/
UPDATE:
this solution works for me:
http://jsfiddle.net/eujFY/2/ <---- updated.
I've seen you found a solution, however it implies setting the height manually on both elements and it requires the usage of unnecessary tags.
So I suggest you to check the "display:table" (container) and "display:table-cell" (inner element) rules: http://jsfiddle.net/RxGS5/
HTML
<div class="container">
<a class="ank">
<img src="http://www.w3schools.com/images/w3schoolslogoNEW310113.gif" />
</a>
</div>
CSS
.container
{
display:table;
width: 500px;
height: 500px;
border: 1px solid black;
}
.ank
{
display: table-cell;
vertical-align: middle;
}
I think firefox's support to box model in CSS3 is soooooooooooooo poor...
I have encountered many problems involving box which works fine in Chrome and Safari..
Here is the latest problem:
it seems that FF does not support box with relative float..
here is the example, you can try it in jsFiddle:
HTML:
<div id="container">
<div id="test">
<div id="b1" class='item'></div>
<div id="b2" class='item'></div>
</div>
</div>
CSS:
#container{
width: 500px;
height: 500px;
background-color: red;
}
#test {
pisition: relative;
float:left;
width: 200px;
height: 200px;
background-color: green;
display: -webkit-box;
display: -moz-box;
display: box;
-moz-box-orient: $align;
-moz-box-pack: center;
-moz-box-align: center;
-webkit-box-orient: $align;
-webkit-box-pack: center;
-webkit-box-align: center;
box-orient: $align;
box-pack: center;
box-align: center;
}
.item {
width: 50px;
height: 50px;
}
#b1 {
background-color: yellow;
}
#b2 {
background-color: blue;
}
when I remove the
pisition: relative;
float:left;
in the #test, everything is OK
but with 'float', the box model doesn't work...
You're not using "CSS3". You're using a combination of invalid CSS (there is no plan for a display: box in CSS), an early WebKit draft implementation of CSS3 Flexbox, and XUL boxes (which are completely unrelated to CSS3 Flexbox and to what WebKit implements).
XUL boxes are not allowed to be floated; when you float them they become blocks, because floating changes display values in CSS.
