mul eax with declared .data value in NASM assembly - xcode

I'm a total beginner at Assembly and i have been trying to get the basics in NASM. Im on a mac, using xcode and i have started dealing with data and i have a simple question.
I have had a hard time finding the answer and the manual for NASM is very overwhelming.
This must be super basic for you NASM guru's out there.

Is it so that i must move the memory into a register to perform operations on it, and i can't manipulate memory "in place"?

In NASM (unlike MASM) a bare symbol is an immediate value. For a memory reference enclose it in square brackets and indicate the required size.

Accessing global variables in ARM64 position independent assembly code

I'm writing some ARM64 assembly code for macOS, and it needs to access a global variable.
I tried to use the solution in this SO answer, and it works fine if I just call the function as is. However, my application needs to patch some instructions of this function, and the way I'm doing it, the function gets moved somewhere else in memory in the process. Note the adrp/ldr pair is untouched during patching.
However, if I try to run the function after moving it elsewhere in memory, it no longer returns correct results. This happens even if I just memcpy() the code as is, without patching. After tracing with a debugger, I isolated the issue to the address of the global valuable being incorrectly loaded by the adrp/ldr pair (and weirdly, the ldr is assembled as an add, as seen with objdump straight after compiling the binary -- not sure if it's somehow related to the issue here.)
What would be the correct way to load a global variable, so that it survives the function being copied somewhere else and run from there?
Note the adrp/ldr pair is untouched during patching.
There's the issue. If you rip code out of the binary it's in, then you effectively need to re-link it.
There's two ways of dealing with this:
If you have complete control over the segment layout, then you could have one executable segment with all of your assembly in it, and right next to it one segment with all addresses that code needs, and make sure the assembly ONLY has references to things on that page. Then wherever you copy your assembly, you'd also copy the data page next to it. This would enable you to make use of static addresses that get rebased by the dynamic linker at the time your binary is loaded. This might look something like:

Compile that with -Wl,-segprot,__ASM,rx,rx and you'll get an executable __ASM and a writeable __REF segment. Those two would have to maintain their relative position to each other when they get copied around.
(Note that on arm64 macOS you cannot put symbol references into executable segments for the dynamic linker to rebase, because it will fault and crash while trying to do so, and even if it were able to do that, it would invalidate the code signature.)
You act as a linker, scanning for PC-relative instructions and re-linking them as you go. The list of PC-relative instructions in arm64 is quite short, so it should be a feasible amount of work:
adr and adrp
b and bl
b.cond (and bc.cond with FEAT_HBC)
cbz and cbnz
tbz and tbnz
ldr and ldrsw (literal)
ldr (SIMD & FP literal)
prfm (literal)
(You can look for the string PC[] in the ARMv8 Reference Manual to find all uses.)
For each of those you'd have to check whether their target address lies within the range that's being copied or not. If it does, then you'd leave the instruction alone (unless you copy the code to a different offset within the 4K page than it was before, in which case you have to fix up adrp instructions). If it isn't then you'll have to recalculate the offset and emit a new instruction. Some of the instructions have a really low maximum offset (tbz/tbnz ±32KiB). But usually the only instructions that reference addresses across function boundaries are adr, adrp, b, bl and ldr. If all code on the page is written by you then you can do adrp+add instead of adr and adrp+ldr instead of just ldr, and if you have compiler-generated code on there, then all adr's and ldr's will have a nop before or after, which you can use to turn them into an adrp combo. That should get your maximum reference range up to ±128MiB.

How can I print numbers in my assembly program

I have a problem with my assembly program. My assembly compiler is NASM. The source and the outputs are in this picture:
The problem is that I can't print numbers from calculations with the extern C function printf(). How can I do it?
The output should be "Ergebnis: 8" but it isn't correct.
In NASM documentation it is pointed that NASM Requires Square Brackets For Memory References. When you write label name without bracket NASM gives its memory address (or offset as it is called sometimes). So, mov eax, val_1 it means that eax register gets val_1's offset. When you add eax, val_2, val_2 offset is added to val_1 offset and you get the result you see.
Write instead:
mov eax, [val_1]
add eax, [val_2]
And you shoul get 8 in eax.
P.S. It seems that you have just switched to NASM from MASM or TASM.

Using Assembly On Mac

I'm using a MacBook Pro with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor at 2.53 GHz, but I was told Mac users must follow AT&T syntax (which adds to my confusion since I am running Intel) and x86 (not sure what this means exactly).
So I need to get into assembly but am finding it very hard to even begin. Searches online show assembly code that varies greatly in syntax and I can't find any resources that explain basic assembly how-tos. I keep reading about registers and a stack but don't understand how to look at this. Can anyone explain/point me in the right direction? Take, for example, this code which is the only code I found to work:

And finally three small questions:
What is the difference between .s and .h file names (I have both a main.c and main.h, which one is for what)?
And why does assembly need a main.c to go with it/how does it call it?

Thanks to whomever answers (this is actually my first post on this site), I've been trying to figure this out for a few days and every resource I have read just doesn't explain the assembly logic to me. It says what .data or .text does but only someone who knows how to "think assembly" would understand what they mean?
Also, if anyone is around New York City and feels very comfortable with Assembly and C I would love some private lessons. I feel there is a lot of potential with this language and would love to learn it.
Assembly language is a category of programming languages which are closely tied to CPU architectures. Traditionally, there is a one-to-one correspondence between each assembly instruction and the resulting CPU instruction.
There are also assembly pseudo-instructions which do not correspond to CPU instruction, but instead affect the assembler or the generated code. .data and .text are pseudo-instructions.
Historically, each CPU manufacturer implemented an assembly language as defined by their assembler, a source code translation utility. There have been thousands of specific assembly languages defined.
In modern times, it has been recognized that each assembly language shares a lot of common features, particularly with respect to pseudo-instructions. The GNU compiler collection (GCC) supports essentially every CPU architecture, so it has evolved generic assembly features.
x86 refers to the Intel 8086 family (8088, 8086, 8087, 80186, 80286, 80386, 80486, 80586 aka Pentium, 80686 aka Pentium II, etc.)
AT&T syntax is a notation style used by many assembly language architectures. A major feature is that instruction operands are written in the order from, to as was common historically. Intel syntax uses to, from operands. There are other differences as well.

Ordinarily, an introductory assembly language programming class is a full semester with plenty of hands-on work. It assumes you are familiar with the basics of computer architecture. It is reasonable to expect that understanding the above material will take 300-500 hours. Good luck!

How to debug an assembled program?

I have a program written in assembly that crashes with a segmentation fault. (The code is irrelevant, but is here.)
My question is how to debug an assembly language program with GDB?
When I try running it in GDB and perform a backtrace, I get no meaningful information. (Just hex offsets.)
How can I debug the program?
(I'm using NASM on Ubuntu, by the way if that somehow helps.)
I would just load it directly into gdb and step through it instruction by instruction, monitoring all registers and memory contents as you go.
I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you don't know there but the program seems simple enough to warrant this sort of approach. I would leave fancy debugging tricks like backtracking (and even breakpoints) for more complex code.
As to the specific problem (code paraphrased below):

You appear to be just pushing 5 on to the stack followed by the address of that 5 in memory (v_0). I'm pretty certain you're going to need to push the address of the format string at some point if you want to call printf. It's not going to take to kindly to being given a rogue format string.
It's likely that your:
mov eax, v_0
should be:
mov eax, format
and I'm assuming that there's more code after that call to printf that you just left off as unimportant (otherwise you'll be going off to never-never land when it returns).
You should still be able to assemble with Stabs markers when linking code (with gcc).
I reccomend using YASM and assembling with -dstabs options:
$ yasm -felf64 -mamd64 -dstabs file.asm
This is how I assemble my assembly programs.
NASM and YASM code is interchangable for the most part (YASM has some extensions that aren't available in NASM, but every NASM code is well assembled with YASM).
I use gcc to link my assembled object files together or while compiling with C or C++ code. When using gcc, I use -gstabs+ to compile it with debug markers.

grdb not working variables

i know this is kinda retarded but I just can't figure it out. I'm debugging this:

the numbers that I find on addresses var1 and var2 are 0x0E and 0x07. I know it's not segmented, but that ain't reason for it to do such escapades, because the addition call works just fine. Could you please explain to me where is my mistake?
I see the problem, dunno how to fix it yet though. The thing is, for some reason the instruction pointer starts at 0x100 and all the segment registers at 0x1628. To address the instruction the used combination is i guess [cs:ip] (one of the segment registers and the instruction pointer for sure). The offset to var1 is 0x10 (probably because from the begining of the code it's the 0x10th byte in order), i tried to examine the memory and what i got was:

1628:110 <- wtf? (assume another 8 bytes)
1628:118 ...
whatever tricks are there in the memory [cs:var1] points somewhere else than in my code, which is probably where the label .data would usually address ds.... probably.. i don't know what is supposed to be at 1628:10
ok, i found out what caused the assness and wasted me whole fuckin day. the behaviour described above is just correct, the code is fully functional. what i didn't know is that grdb debugger for some reason sets the begining address to 0x100... the sollution is to insert the directive ORG 0x100 on the first line and that's the whole thing. the code was working because instruction pointer has the right address to first instruction and goes one by one, but your assembler doesn't know what effective address will be your program stored at so it pretty much remains relative to first line of the code which means all the variables (if not using label for data section) will remain pointing as if it started at 0x0. which of course wouldn't work with DOS. and grdb apparently emulates some DOS features... sry for the language, thx everyone for effort, hope this will spare someone's time if having the same problem...

Assuming that is x86 assembly, var1 and var2 must reside in the .data section.
Explanation: I'm not going to explain exactly how the executable file is structured (not to mention this is platform-specific), but here's a general idea as to why what you're doing is not working.
Assembly code must be divided into data sections due to the fact that each data section corresponds directly (or almost directly) to a specific part of the binary/executable file. All global variables must be defined in the .data sections since they have a corresponding location in the binary file which is where all global data resides.
Defining a global variable (or a globally accessed part of the memory) inside the code section will lead to undefined behavior. Some x86 assemblers might even throw an error on this.
