Unable to find docker image locally - macos

I was following this post - the reference code is on GitHub. I have cloned the repository on my local.
The project has got a react app inside it. I'm trying to run it on my local following step 7 on the same post:
docker run -p 8080:80 shakyshane/cra-docker
This returns:
Unable to find image 'shakyshane/cra-docker:latest' locally
docker: Error response from daemon: pull access denied for shakyshane/cra-docker, repository does not exist or may require 'docker login'.
See 'docker run --help'.
I tried login to docker again but looks like since it belongs to #shakyShane I cannot access it.
I idiotically tried npm start too but it's not a simple react app running on node - it's in the container and containers are not controlled by npm
Looks like docker pull shakyshane/cra-docker:latest throws this:
Error response from daemon: pull access denied for shakyshane/cra-docker, repository does not exist or may require 'docker login'
So the question is how do I run this docker image on my local mac machine?

Well this is illogical but still sharing so future people like me don't get stuck.
The problem was that I was trying to run a docker image which doesn't exist.
I needed to build the image:
docker build . -t xameeramir/cra-docker
And then run it:
docker run -p 8080:80 xameeramir/cra-docker

In my case, my image had TAG specified with it and I was not using it.
REPOSITORY TAG IMAGE ID CREATED SIZE
testimage testtag 189b7354c60a 13 hours ago 88.3MB
Unable to find image 'testimage:latest' locally for this command docker run testimage
So specifying tag like this - docker run testimage:testtag worked for me

Posting my solution since non of the above worked.
Working on macbook M1 pro.
The issue I had is that the image was built as arm/64. And I was running the command:
docker run --platform=linux/amd64 ...
So I had to build the image for amd/64 platform in order to run it.
Command below:
docker buildx build --platform=linux/amd64 ...
In conclusion your docker image platform and docker run platform needs to be the same from what I experienced.

In my case, the docker image did exist on the system and still I couldn't run the container locally, so I used the exact image ID instead of image name and tag, like this:
docker run myContainer c29150c8588e

I received this error message when I typed the name/character wrong. That is, "name1\name2" instead of "name1/name2" (wrong slash).

In my case, I saw this error when I had logged in to the dockerhub in my docker desktop. The repo I was pulling was local to my enterprise. Once i logged out of dockerhub, the pull worked.

This just happened to me because my local docker vm on macos ran out of disk space.
I just deleted some old images using docker image prune and it started working correctly again.

shakyshane/cra-docker Does not exist in that user's repo https://hub.docker.com/u/shakyshane/

The problem is you are trying to run an imagen that does not exists. If you are executing a Dockerfile, the image was not created until Dockerfile pass with no errors; so when Dockerfile tries to run the image, it can't find it. Be sure you have no errors in the execution of your scripts.

The simplest answer can be the correct one!.. make sure you have permissions to execute the command, use:
sudo docker run -p 8080:80 shakyshane/cra-docker

In my case, I didn't realise there was a difference between docker run and docker start, and I kept using the run command when I should've been using the start command.
FYI, run is for building and creating the docker container, start is to just start a stopped container

Use -d
sudo docker run -d -p 8000:8000 rasa/duckling
learn about -d here
sudo docker run --help

At first, i build image on mac-m1-pro with this command docker build -t hello_k8s_world:0.0.1 ., when is run this image the issue appear.
After read Master Yi's answer, i realize the crux of the matter and rebuild my images like this docker build --platform=arm64 -t hello_k8s_world:0.0.1 .
Finally,it worked.

Docker image error: The origin server did not find a current representation for the target resource or is not willing to disclose that one exists

I created a docker image using a script. The docker image got created successfully but when I am trying to run on the browser, I get the following message
I tried to resolve the error using webapps but it is popping up the same message.
It is happening probably because the directory /usr/local/tomcat/webapps is empty. as you can see in the description in the Docker Hub official image:
You can then go to http://localhost:8888 or http://host-ip:8888 in a browser (noting that it will return a 404 since there are no webapps loaded by default).
To solve that, you can just create a new image and copy and paste what you want inside of the folder /usr/local/tomcat/webapps.
For example, you can find inside of the folder /usr/local/tomcat/webapps.dist files of the tomcat webapp manager. If you try to see what is that you can run:
$ docker run -it tomcat:10 ls /usr/local/tomcat/webapps.dist
ROOT docs examples host-manager manager
Now that you know what is inside of the folder /usr/local/tomcat/webapps.dist, create your own Dockerfile and copy and paste this folder to /usr/local/tomcat/webapps:
FROM tomcat
RUN cp -R /usr/local/tomcat/webapps.dist/* /usr/local/tomcat/webapps
CMD ["catalina.sh", "run"]
Build the image:
$ docker build . -t custom-tomcat
Execute the image:
$ docker run -d -P custom-tomcat
Check the port opened:
$ docker ps
CONTAINER ID IMAGE COMMAND CREATED STATUS PORTS NAMES
58390eab3fec custom-tomcat "catalina.sh run" 9 minutes ago Up 9 minutes 0.0.0.0:49163->8080/tcp, :::49163->8080/tcp lucid_joliot
Open your browser and check if it works:

Running docker run command on windows

I am a beginner in docker and I am trying to run a Q&A website locally in my browser. I have found an open source container on the link https://hub.docker.com/r/zout84/askbot-docker. Here are the steps that I have done:
I have downloaded docker toolbox DockerToolbox-19.03.1.exe to be able to run docker using my Windows terminal.
Following the instructions on the above link I have run the command docker run -v /tmp/askbot:/data/ -p 8080:80 -d zout84/askbot-docker. Since I am on Windows I have replaced /tmp/askbot:/data/ by a folder I have created.
I have downloaded the container and put it a local folder that I called Docker_source. I have replaced zout84/askbot-docker by C:\Docker_source in the above docker run command
Now the error that I have is docker: invalid reference format: repository name must be lowercase.
Please, any suggestions on how to make it work?
Like the error said, The repository has to be lower case. It is called C:\Docker_source. You got a capital "D" over there. change it to a "d"

Jenkins tutorial maven project (with Docker) fails at Build stage

I'm using the current Jenkins Maven Project tutorial using Docker:
https://jenkins.io/doc/tutorials/build-a-java-app-with-maven/
I keep getting this error at the Build stage:
[simple-java-maven-app] Running shell script
sh: can't create
/var/jenkins_home/workspace/simple-java-maven-app#tmp/durable-bae402a9/jenkins-log.txt:
nonexistent directory
sh: can't create
/var/jenkins_home/workspace/simple-java-maven-app#tmp/durable-bae402a9/jenkins-result.txt:
nonexistent directory
I've tried setting least restrictive permissions with chmod -R 777, chown -R nobody and chown -R 1000 on the listed directories, but nothing seems to work.
This is happening with the jenkins image on Docker version 17.12.0-ce, build c97c6d6 on Windows 10 Professional.
As this is happening with the Maven project tutorial on the Jenkins site, I'm wondering how many others have run into this issue.
I had also the same problem on MacOSX.
After few hours of research, I have finally find the solution.
To solve the problem, it's important to understand that Jenkins is inside a container and when the docker agent inside this container talk to your docker engine, it give path to mount volume matching inner the container. But your docker engine is outer. So to allow to work correctly path inner the container must match the same path outer the container in your host.
To allow working correctly, you need to change 2 things.
docker run arguments
Jenkinsfile docker agent arguments
For my own usage, I used this
docker run -d \
--env "JENKINS_HOME=$HOME/Library/Jenkins" \
--restart always \
--name jenkins \
-u root \
-p 8080:8080 \
-v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock \
-v $HOME/Library/Jenkins:$HOME/Library/Jenkins \
-v "$HOME":/home \
jenkinsci/blueocean
In the Jenkinsfile
Replace the agent part
agent {
docker {
image 'maven:3-alpine'
args '-v /root/.m2:/root/.m2'
}
by
agent {
docker {
image 'maven:3-alpine'
args '-v <host_home_path>/.m2:/root/.m2'
}
It's quite likely that this issue resulted from a recent change in Docker behaviour, which was no longer being handled correctly by the Docker Pipeline plugin in Jenkins.
Without going into too much detail, the issue was causing Jenkins to no longer be able to identify the container it was running in, which results in the errors (above) that you encountered with these tutorials.
A new version (1.15) of the Docker Pipeline plugin was released yesterday (https://plugins.jenkins.io/docker-workflow).
If you upgrade this plugin on your Jenkins (in Docker) instance (via Manage Jenkins > Manage Plugins), you'll find that these tutorials should start working again (as documented).
The error message means that the directory durable-bae402a9 was not created.
Walk back through the tutorial to find the step that should have created that directory, and make whatever changes are needed to make sure it succeeds.

docker-compose up with volumes "no such file or directory"

I'm a beginner in working with docker especially docker compose. Currently, creation my initial easy docker environment, I run into the first error and I've no clue why.
I tried to search for a solution in stackoverflow but found nothing that could help me.
Starting my docker with "docker-compose up" I get the following error:
$ docker-compose up
Removing errorinstance_app_1
Recreating 8a358dfcb306_8a358dfcb306_8a358dfcb306_errorinstance_app_1 ...
Recreating 8a358dfcb306_8a358dfcb306_8a358dfcb306_errorinstance_app_1 ... error

ERROR: for app Cannot start service app: oci runtime error: container_linux.go:265: starting container process caused "exec: \"./run.sh\": stat ./run.sh: no such file or directory"

So. Following my folder structure:
Project
docker-compose.yml
Docker
Java
Dockerfile
src
run.sh
Following my docker-compose.yml:
version: '2'
services:
app:
build:
dockerfile: ./Docker/Java/Dockerfile
context: .
volumes:
- ./src:/usr/local/etc/
working_dir: /usr/local/etc/
command: ./run.sh
And following my docker file:
FROM java:7-jdk-alpine
# WORKDIR /usr/local/etc
run.sh
echo "Hello world."
Yes, I know that I could do that solution only in a docker-compose file. But in the future I need to extend the Dockerfile.
Can someone help me respectively does anyone see the issue?
The problem is with the base docker image you are using in dockerfile:
FROM java:7-jdk-alpine
You are trying to start container by running run.sh bash script. But the above image doesn't support bash itself
For reference, you can see the documentation of above image in docker hub page here. Quoting the necessary portion here:
java:alpine
...
To minimize image size, it's uncommon for additional related tools
(such as git or bash) to be included in Alpine-based images. Using
this image as a base, add the things you need in your own Dockerfile
(see the alpine image description for examples of how to install
packages if you are unfamiliar).
That's about the problem.
Now, I can think of 2 solutions:
Just use java:7-jdk as base image instead of java:7-jdk-alpine
Install bash on top of the base image java:7-jdk-alpine by changing dockerfile to:
FROM java:7-jdk-alpine
RUN apk update && apk upgrade && apk add bash
#WORKDIR /usr/local/etc
*source of steps to install bash in alpine linux is here
It looks like docker compose can't find your run.sh file. This file needs to be included in your docker image.
Change your Dockerfile to the following, then rebuild the image with docker build -t <YOUR_IMAGE_NAME> ..
FROM java:7-jdk-alpine
ADD run.sh /usr/local/etc/run.sh
Once your image is rebuilt, run docker-compose up again.
The easiest way to tackle the problem is to execute a bash session in the container, then inside the container, you have to check if the file exists in the
indicated path if the file is not in the path, it must be included when you create the image into the docker file or through a volume inside de docker-compose.
Another thing to check is the relative path you are using. It will be clear when you check the existence of the file inside de docker container
docker exec -it CONTAINER_NAME bash
I recommend you to create a volume in the docker compose file, as it is the easier way, and also the best way.
there is a question that I want to do you, why are you putting the Dockerfile file inside a Java path?
It is not a good idea o guideline to follow
The correct way is to put your dockerfile file into an environment folder, in such a way the dockerfile file is not related to the java source of your application
I got this Error quite a lot and after a lot of investigation, it looked like some images were corrupted.
Deleting those and rebuilding solve the problem. It was not docker installation or configuration itself.

Dockerfile for a newly committed docker image

I downloaded an image of ubuntu os in my system and after about committing 3 images from it(every image has an incremental change from before image), I now have my final image. Now I want the Dockerfile of this final image so that I can include commands like starting service at the start of container.
I have used this command,
sudo docker commit --change='CMD service apache2 start' 172d6dc34471 server_startup
to make the apache service start when the container is run. This starts the service in the container but doesn't go inside the container. It just starts the apache and exits to my local environment.
I would like to know how to get the Dockerfile for my final image so that I can include startup commands.
I have also tried this dockerfile from image, but its not working. It just throws error that .sock file is missing. I have tried this with both the new image and the parent image that I first downloaded.
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
you can use
docker history --no-trunc your_image
it will show you (in reverse order) what has been done
It is less user friendly than dockerfile from image, but it is basically the same thing.
I have somewhere a Python script that does that cleanly, I will check and post it.
Edit: Just this should show a lot
docker history your_image | docker inspect $(awk ' NR>1 {print $1}')
As CMD you need to provide a no-daemon program that keeps in foreground. That is not accomplished by service.
You should try:
sudo docker commit --change='CMD apache2 -DFOREGROUND' 172d6dc34471 server_startup
Sorry for the late reply, I used the --change argument while committing the image to point to the custom script(which I added within the container with the list of commands to be run at the start) that I want to run when the image is run for the first time.
sudo docker commit --change='ENTRYPOINT ["/test.sh"]' containerId autostart
I didn't know much about the dockerfile that everyone is suggesting but it is also a very good solution.
