Error while accessing variables in vars file in a role - ansible

As a follow up to this question How to read a particular part of file in ansible. I am trying to do the same but by using roles. The variables are stored in vars files
Here is the vars/main.yml file in the role
add:
commands: []
sub:
commands: []
multiply:
commands: []
div:
commands: []
Here's the code in tasks/main.yml file
- name: Getting the Add Commands
set_fact:
add.commands: "{{add.commands + [ item ]}}"
with_lines: "cat {{ {{playbook_dir}}/testing/files/data.txt }}"
when: item is search('^add')
- debug:
var: add.commands
- name: Getting the Sub Commands
set_fact:
sub.commands: "{{sub.commands + [ item ]}}"
with_lines: "cat {{ {{playbook_dir}}/testing/files/data.txt }}"
when: item is search('^sub')
- debug:
var: sub.commands
- name: Getting the Multiply Commands
set_fact:
multiply.commands: "{{multiply.commands + [ item ]}}"
with_lines: "cat {{ {{playbook_dir}}/testing/files/data.txt }}"
when: item is search('^multiply')
- debug:
var: multiply.commands
- name: Getting the Div Commands
set_fact:
div.commands: "{{div.commands + [ item ]}}"
with_lines: "cat {{ {{playbook_dir}}/testing/files/data.txt }}"
when: item is search('^div')
- debug:
var: div.commands
Code to execute the role
testing.yml
- name: Main Program
hosts: localhost
roles:
- testing
I thought that I would get the add commands for add.commands and similarly for others but I am getting the following error
"msg": "The variable name 'add.commands' is not valid. Variables must start with a letter or underscore character, and contain only letters, numbers and underscores."
Can anyone tell me how to troubleshoot this error and why it happened in the first place.

This is as expected and the error clearly states that.
Also as per ansible,
Variable names should be letters, numbers, and underscores. Variables
should always start with a letter.
So . can't be part of the variable name.

Ansible: Output of 'loop' with 'register' module

I'm trying to get the output of my Ansible script using register module but the loop I'm using is probably causing some issue.
Whats a default way of using register module with loop?
Code:
---
- name:
hosts:
gather_facts:
tasks:
- name: Execute file
ansible.builtin.shell:
environment:
"setting environment"
register: output
loop:
"value"
- debug:
vars: output.std_lines
Whats a default way of using register module with loop?
It is just registering the result.
The only difference will be, that a single task will provide you just with an dictionary result (or output in your example) and registering in a loop will provide with a list result.results (or output.results in your example). To access the .stdout_lines you will need to loop over the result set .results too.
You may have a look into the following example playbook which will show some aspects of Registering variables, Loops, data structures, dicts and lists and type debugging.
---
- hosts: localhost
become: false
gather_facts: false
tasks:
- name: Create STDOUT output (single)
command: 'echo "1"'
register: result
- name: Show full result (single)
debug:
var: result
- name: Show '.stdout' (single)
debug:
msg: "The result in '.stdout': {{ result.stdout }} is of type {{ result.stdout | type_debug }}"
- name: Create STDOUT output (loop)
command: 'echo "{{ item }}"'
register: result
loop: [1, 2, 3]
loop_control:
label: "{{ item }}"
- name: Show full result (loop)
debug:
var: result
- name: Show '.stdout' (loop)
debug:
msg: "The result in '.stdout': {{ item.stdout }} is of type {{ item.stdout | type_debug }}"
loop: "{{ result.results }}"
loop_control:
label: "{{ item.item }}"
By running it and going through the output you can get familiar with the differences in your tasks.

Ansible trim string

I'm trying write role to install MySql 8, and get problem with this:
- name: Extract root password from logs into {{ mysql_root_old_password }} variable
ansible.builtin.slurp:
src: "{{ mysql_logfile_path }}"
register: mysql_root_old_password
#when: "'mysql' in ansible_facts.packages"
- name: Extract root password from logs into {{ mysql_root_old_password }} variable
set_fact:
mysql_root_old_password: "{{ mysql_root_old_password.content | b64decode | regex_findall('generated for root#localhost: (.*)$', 'multiline=true') }}"
#when: "'mysqld' in ansible_facts.packages"
- name: Get Server template
ansible.builtin.template:
src: "{{ item.name }}.j2"
dest: "{{ item.path }}"
loop:
- { name: "my.cnf", path: "/root/.my.cnf" }
notify:
- Restart mysqld
on the .my.cnf I get password with quotes and brackets:
[client]
user=root
password=['th6k(gZeJSt4']
How to trim that?
What I try:
- name: trim password
set_fact:
mysql_root_old_password2: "{{ mysql_root_old_password | regex_findall('[a-zA-Z0-9,()!##$%^&*]{12}')}}"
Thanks.
The result of regex_findall is a list because there might be more matches. Take the last item
- set_fact:
mysql_root_old_password: "{{ mysql_root_old_password.content|
b64decode|
regex_findall('generated for root#localhost: (.*)$', 'multiline=true')|
last }}"
From your description
on the .my.cnf I get password with quotes and brackets ... How to trim that
I understand that you like to read a INI file like my.cnf.ini
[client]
user=root
password=['A1234567890B']
where the value of the key password looks like a list with one element in YAML and the structure doesn't change, but you are interested in the value without leading and trailing square brackets and single quotes only.
To do so there are several possibilities.
Via Ansible Lookup plugins
---
- hosts: localhost
become: false
gather_facts: false
tasks:
- name: Extract root password from INI file
debug:
msg: "{{ lookup('ini', 'password section=client file=my.cnf.ini') }}"
register: result
- name: Show result with type
debug:
msg:
- "{{ result.msg }}"
- "result.msg is of type {{ result.msg | type_debug }}"
- "Show password only {{ result.msg[0] }}" # the first list element
Such approach will work on the Control Node.
Like all templating, lookups execute and are evaluated on the Ansible control machine.

Further Documentation
ini lookup – read data from an INI file
Via Ansible shell module, sed and cut.
---
- hosts: localhost
become: false
gather_facts: false
tasks:
- name: Extract root password from INI file
shell:
cmd: echo $(sed -n 's/^password=//p' my.cnf.ini | cut -d "'" -f 2)
register: result
- name: Show result
debug:
msg: "{{ result.stdout }}"
Please take note regarding "I get password with quotes and brackets ... ['<pass>'] ... How to trim that?" that from perspective of the SQL service, .cnf file, [' and '] are actually part of the password!
- name: Server template
template:
src: "my.cnf.ini"
dest: "/root/.my.cnf"
If that is correct they will be necessary for proper function of the service.

Ansible Registers - Dynamic naming

I am trying to use a register in Ansible playbook to store my output. Below is the code which i am using.
I have tried below code
- name: Check if Service Exists
stat: path=/etc/init.d/{{ item }}
register: {{ item }}_service_status
with_items:
- XXX
- YYY
- ZZZ
I need different outputs to be stored in different register variables based on the items as mentioned in the code. It is failing and not able to proceed. Any help would be appreciated.
Updated answer
I think you need to put quotes around it:
register: "{{ item }}_service_status"
Or you can use set_fact (1, 2, 3, 4)
register all the output to a single static variable output and then use a loop to iteratively build a new variable service_status (a list) by looping over each item in the static variable output
- name: Check if Service Exists
stat: path=/etc/init.d/{{ item }}
register: output
with_items:
- XXX
- YYY
- ZZZ
- name: Setting fact using output of loop
set_fact:
service_status:
- rc: "{{ item.rc }}"
stdout: "{{ item.stdout }}"
id: "{{ item.id }}"
with_items:
- "{{ output }}"
- debug:
msg: "ID and stdout: {{ item.id }} - {{ item.stdout }}"
with_items:
- "{{ service_status }}"
Initial Answer
IIUC, this link from the Ansible docs shows how to use register inside a loop (see another example in this SO post).
A couple of points
it may be more convenient to assign the list (XXX, YYY, ZZZ) to a separate variable (eg. 1, 2)
I don't know if this is part of the problem, but with_items is no longer the recommended approach to loop over a variable: instead use loop - see here for an example
vars:
items:
- XXX
- YYY
- ZZZ
- name: Check if Service Exists
stat: path=/etc/init.d/{{ item }}
register: service_status
loop: "{{ items|flatten(levels=1) }}"
- name: Show the return code and stdout
debug:
msg: "Cmd {{ item.cmd }}, return code {{ item.rc }}, stdout {{ item.stdout }}"
when: item.rc != 0
with_items: "{{ service_status.results }}"

Use awk with ansible to run command

I have a playbook below:
- hosts: localhost
vars:
folderpath:
folder1/des
folder2/sdf
tasks:
- name: Create a symlink
shell: "echo {{folderpath}} | awk -F'/' '{system(\"mkdir \" $1$2 );}'"
register: result
#- debug:
# msg: "{{ result.stdout }}"
with_items:
- " {{folderpath}} "
However when I run the playbook I get 2 folders made. The first one is :
1- folder1des (as expected)
2- folder2 (this should ideally be folder2sdf )
I have tried many combination and still it doesnt want to work. What do I need to have it work properly.
I do not have ansible environment at the moment. But following should work:
- hosts: localhost
tasks:
- name: Create a symlink
shell: "echo {{item}} | awk -F'/' '{system(\"mkdir \" $1$2 );}'"
register: result
#- debug:
# msg: "{{ result.stdout }}"
with_items:
- folder1/des
- folder2/sdf
Reference: Ansible Loops Example
Explanation:
You were adding a single list object to the with_items. so in your with_items it finds only one object (which is of type list) to iterate over. Hence it runs only once. So now what I have done is I have passed a list of items to with_items that way it can iterate over the multiple items present in with_items.
Hope this helps!
Maybe
- hosts: localhost
vars:
folderpath:
folder1/des
folder2/sdf
tasks:
- name: Create a symlink
file:
state : link
path : "{{ item | regex_replace('[0-9]/','_') }}"
src : "{{ item }}"
with_items: " {{ folderpath }} "
Nothing in your given code creates symlinks. Is that really what you meant to do?

Ansible recursive checks in playbooks

We need to go through this structure
Zone spec
https://gist.github.com/git001/9230f041aaa34d22ec82eb17d444550c
I was able to run the following snipplet but now I'm stucked at the error checking.
playbook
--
- hosts: all
gather_facts: no
vars_files:
- "../doc/application-zone-spec.yml"
roles:
- { role: ingress_add, customers: "{{ application_zone_spec }}" }
role
- name: check if router exists
shell: "oc get dc -n default {{ customers.zone_name }}-{{ item.type }}"
with_items: "{{ customers.ingress }}"
ignore_errors: True
register: check_router
- name: Print ingress hostnames
debug: var=check_router
- name: create new router
shell: "echo 'I will create a router'"
with_items: "{{ customers.ingress }}"
when: check_router.rc == 1
Output of a ansible run
https://gist.github.com/git001/dab97d7d12a53edfcf2a69647ad543b7
The problem is that I need to go through the ingress items and I need to map the error of the differnt types from the "check_router" register.
It would be nice to make something like.
Pseudo code.
Iterate through the "customers.ingress"
check in "check_router" if the rc is ! 0
execute command.
We use.
ansible-playbook --version
ansible-playbook 2.1.0.0
config file = /etc/ansible/ansible.cfg
configured module search path = Default w/o overrides
You can replace the second loop with:
- name: create new router
shell: "echo 'I will create a router with type {{ item.item }}'"
with_items: "{{ check_router.results }}"
when: item.rc == 1
This will iterate over every step of check_route loop and you can access original items via item.item.
