I have a couple command line apps (launch4j + java.exe) I use.
I'd like to run them on Windows Terminal instead of cmd.exe. But, even after installing Windows Terminal, when I execute the launch4j exe, it still runs on cmd.exe.
If I run wt myapp.exe -oneinput it works, but I'd like to run myapp.exe directly.
Is there any setting I must do so that Windows Terminal is used in place of cmd.exe?

I just did a fresh install of Postgres 9.3.5 onto my Windows 7 machine. My machine's locale is "Japanese (Japan)". When I run psql at the command prompt (or PowerShell), this happens:
If I run psql --help, the eldritchness increases:
I get normal output if I switch my locale back to "English (United States)", but this is a time-consuming process that involves restarting my computer.
Question: is there a way to make psql display normal output even when in a Japaese locale; OR, is there a way to switch locales (or make psql believe that I have switched locales) that is fast and does not involve restarting my computer?
Run in the unicode codepage - chcp 65001, or run cmd as cmd.exe /k chcp 65001.
For frustrating historical reasons Windows command prompts run in an ANSI codepage by default.
I have installed PostgreSQL, wanting to set up a new database, everything is going fine, until I am trying to use the € sign. And then I knew, that warning I get in the beginning is for a reason.
The warning I am getting at starting up my psql shell is:
WARNING: Console code page (850) differs from Windows code page (1252)
8-bit characters might not work correctly. See psql reference

So I am going to do as I am told (from PostgreSQL Documentation 9.2 - psql):
Notes for Windows Users
psql is built as a "console application". Since the Windows console windows use a different encoding than the rest of the system, you must take special care when using 8-bit characters within psql. If psql detects a problematic console code page, it will warn you at startup. To change the console code page, two things are necessary:
Set the code page by entering cmd.exe /c chcp 1252. (1252 is a code page that is appropriate for German; replace it with your value.) If you are using Cygwin, you can put this command in /etc/profile.
Set the console font to Lucida Console, because the raster font does not work with the ANSI code page.
When I type the cmd.exe /c chcp 1252 command I get a syntax error. So psql, doesn't recognize the command.
Out of desperation, I was trying to do something in cmd.exe itself, does not work either.
I work in Windows 7 - 64Bit.
What is your database Character Set? If it is UTF-8, then before running, what ever you want in psql, just tell the console to use the UTF-8 encoding:
cmd.exe /c chcp 65001
I had the same problem in Windows 10.
In psql type ! chcp
it revealed my setting as 850. This I changed to 1252 by doing the following.
! dir revealed a file runpsql.bat in C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\9.6\scripts
From windows after exiting psql I ran Notebook in Administrator mode and added above the REM Run psql statement the command chcp 1252
Now runs without the warnings
As far as I know, in SQL shell you just need to type \! chcp <codepage_you_need>.
Still, after that, you might encounter another issue:
In order to solve this problem you need to go to properties (left upper corner) -> Fonts -> choose Lucida Console.
Then type \! chcp 1251
After that, everything must be alright.
I was able to fix this by running SET CLIENT_ENCODING TO 'UTF-8'; in the sql bash
I had the same problem in Windows 8.
You have to set the chcp to 1252.
With the command cmd.exe /c chcp 1252, or, if you are using powershell: powershell /c chcp 1252.
You can also use powershell /c chcp 1252.
But you have to type it before enter in the psql console.
Edit runpsql.bat (folder ...\PostgreSQL\XX\scripts)
On the next line after #echo off write: cmd /c chcp 1252 and save (you need admin permissions).

I'm building a lightweight version of the ncurses library. So far, it works pretty well with VT100-compatible terminals, but win32 console fails to recognise the \033 code as the beginning of an escape sequence:

While for versions before Windows 10 Anniversary Update:
ANSI.SYS has a restriction that it can run only in the context of the MS-DOS sub-system under Windows 95-Vista.
Microsoft KB101875 explains how to enable ANSI.SYS in a command window, but it does not apply to Windows NT. According to the article: we all love colors, modern versions of Windows do not have this nice ANSI support.
Instead, Microsoft created a lot of functions, but this is far from your need to operate ANSI/VT100 escape sequence.

ANSI.SYS also works in NT-derived systems for 16-bit legacy programs executing under the NTVDM.
The Win32 console does not natively support ANSI escape sequences at all. Software such as Ansicon can however act as a wrapper around the standard Win32 console and add support for ANSI escape sequences.
So I think ANSICON by Jason Hood is your solution. It is written in C, supports 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows, and the source is available.

Starting from Windows 10 TH2 (v1511), conhost.exe and cmd.exe support ANSI and VT100 Escape Sequences out of the box (although they have to be enabled).

Base on #BrainSlugs83 you can activate on the current Windows 10 version via register, with this command line:

Ansi.sys (in the system32 folder) is an "MSDOS driver" provided as part of Windows XP, 2000, and earlier versions of NT. In 2000 and XP, it is located in the system32 folder (I don't remember the structure of earlier versions of NT). Programs that run in the DOS subsystem and use standard output can use ANSI.SYS just as they could running over MSDOS.
To load ansi.sys, you must use the device= or devicehigh= command in config, just as you would in MSDOS. On Windows NT 5 (2K & XP), each copy of the DOS subsystem can be given a separate config file in the pif/shortcut (use the "advanced" button), and there is a default file called CONFIG.NT (also in the system32 folder), which is used if the pif/shortcut does not specify a special config file.
When ansi.sys is loaded correctly, mem /d will report that it is loaded. On earlier versions of NT, you can and must load a proper DOS environment to load ansi.sys, and ansi art will work at the prompt. On Win 2K and XP, loading ansi.sys will have no effect on your "CMD prompt" because CMD is not a DOS program: it is a 32 bit Windows console program. For some reason that I do not understand, on WinXP, even if you load a fixed copy of command.com using "command.com /p", the command prompt will not be ansi enabled: perhaps when you do it that way it only emulates loading command.com?
In any case, when you use an actual DOS version of command.com, ansi is enabled after being loaded: you can demonstrate it's use with a bit of ansi art like this:

CONFIG.NT (in the system32 folder) contains an example of the syntax for loading device drivers. You will need to be an Administrator to edit that default file, or you can make a copy of it.
On Win 2K and XP, the default "shortcut" for MSDOS is a .PIF file, not a .LNK file. If you create a .lnk file to CMD, you won't be able to set special config and autoexec files, it will use the default CONFIG.NT. If you want to use a special config file for just one DOS application, you can make a copy of the "MSDOS shortcut", or you can make a copy of "_default.pif", found in your Windows folder.

Go to the folder where you unzip the file in CMD.
Then execute this command "colortool -b scheme-name"
The scheme-name needs to be replaced with any of these options below:

In my case, the command would be like this "colortool -b solarized_dark.itermcolors"
Click right on the console window and select Properties.
You don't need to change any value just click "OK" to save the setting. (You will notice that your font already contains colors).

Then restart your cmd or powerShell.
The ANSI color should be enabled and working with the color scheme you chose before.
Had the same issue. I installed ConEmu and that one solved my problem.
Somehow in Windows you just need to call any shell command first, rather call the system function. Just in start of your main method put system("");, and don't forget to include stdlib.h.
I noticed this when I looked at some of my old programs that also used ANSI codes to understand why they work, but my new code is not
I have created a batch file to run an application automatically but it seems my CMD does not run it. I typed this (using notepad as an example):
CMD /C "C:\notepad2\notepad2.exe"
If I run this from Windows Vista it worked. But running this from Windows Server 2008 (64-bit) it just doesn't work. I even try using that line from the Run menu but no go.
What do I do? My aim is to run a scheduled task that runs the batch file every now and then.
Stupid question, but does the program you're trying to run actually exist on the Server 2k8 machine?
There are no differences in cmd between Vista and Server 2k8 whatsoever.
Besides, why do you need to execute it via cmd? Can't you just run the application directly? Using cmd /c is only necessary for shell built-ins, such as dir or start.
Also remember that there is no NTVDM on 64-bit Windows—you can't run 16-bit programs. I doubt one would still use them nowadays but it may be the only thing I can think of why it doesn't work in 64-bit.
