I haven't dabbled with animated gifs for a very long time. I'd like to create something similar to this:

I can't imageine whoever created this animated frame-by-frame to get that result. So i'd like to know what tools there are for doing something like that? Or perhaps i'm all wrong and the only way to do it is frame-by-frame?
Just some advice where to get started if anyone is able.
So what i did in the end was use Adobe Illustrator to create the paths.
I then changed the stroke to dashed. Modifying the dash i was able to make it appear as thought the line was growing along the path. I then created more paths.
I then created a js file to incrementally increase the dash and save a gif. This created me over 100 snapshots.
Imported these into Adobe Photoshop and export! Bingo!

I am working with an old system of palletes. When I export an image, it also creates an pallete with 15/16 colors. But when I try to replicate the same result, the program does not recognize the image which I just created. To analyse what happened, I opened some images with notepad and compared them with my "creation" and I noticed quite some differences.
But the most interesting thing was that at the beginning of my images' code was the type "BM6", while they should be "png" or "bmp". I think that is some thing of codification, but I cannot find anything about it.
If the image file is properly formed, then you can take your .bm6 file and simple change / rename the extension to .bmp. And it should suddenly be an image.
.bm6 can result from creating an image file using a text editor, as seen here.
I'm using the print function in MATLAB to write images of plots, something like that
print(figure(1),'-dpng','-r300',filename);
But apparently the images are not overwritten, and the original images stay. I was using saveas before, which seems to overwrite the images, but print gives me more output options. Any ideas?
UPDATE: I ended up deleting the files before the printing with a different function.
You can use this:
im = frame2im(getframe(gcf,rec)); %Grabs image of plot as an image
imsave(im, filename); %save image
That syntax may not be 100%, its a while since I've used it.
Also be aware that this isn't perfect - I remember having issues with it grabbing a grey border around the edge of the plot. Also, I think the image may be based on a matlab screenshot.... just something to be aware of
Saving figures in matlab is rather troublesome, especially if the saved image should look like the original figure.
For myself i found the solution in using export_fig.
It's one of the most downloaded fileexchange files - maybe you should give it a try:

When I use the following,
imshow(imread('image1.jpg'));
imshow(imread('image2.jpg'));
imshow(imread('image3.jpg'));
imshow(imread('image4.jpg'));
imshow(imread('image5.jpg'));
imshow(imread('image6.jpg'));
I got only image named image6.jpg in the output figure.
There is also an option figure,imshow(...); to view all the images each in new window.
But writing figure in each line where I need to view the image is a repeated and tedious process. Is there any other solution to get the same output as with figure,imshow(..);
without using figure function.
I mainly put on this question because while programming a lot somewhere we forget to use the figure function and so the image that we need to view wont be visible. It would have been overwritten by other image. So provide me some solution.
I ask this only for simplicity in writing the code. So if there is any solution, please mention.

I'm not sure, but I don't think that there's a workaround to that. MATLAB basically changes the current figure handle to that of a new image when you use imshow. One thing you can do however is to make a copy of imshow in your local directory and edit it accordingly to make your own UDF.
What I would recommend however (so as to preserve functionality across systems) is that you open your code is an editor and replace all imshows with figure, imshow. This should be easy enough and it'll be easy to revert back as well.
I have a set of really big images out of which I need to crop little snippets. These snippets are all exactly the same size but don't follow a strict pattern so I can't do this programatically.
Ideally I would like to open up one of the big files and be able to point and click on say, the top left corner of a snippet and have that automatically be saved to disk without even having to enter a file name, and then continue on with the rest. (Of course this would be the ideal way which I know is probably way off the real possible way!).
I started doing this in Photoshop CS4 but cropping a snippet, saving, undoing (to get to the full image), and starting over again takes way too long.
Maybe someone has a better way to do this in photoshop or in some other software.

Instead of cropping and undoing, you could:
make (or resize) a selection
copy the selection to a new image
save the image
close the image
You might need to split it into two actions, I don't know enough about programming Photoshop.

I ended up doing this with a suggestion a colleague of mine came up with. It consisted of creating a Photoshop "slice" over the first region I wanted to crop and then cloning that region over the rest of the other sections. After that, using Save For Web (and ofter hitting Continue when PS complained about how that image was way beyond Save For Web's capabilities) I could save all images at once.
This was the fastest and easiest method I could find. Until then I was going with Mark Ransom's method.
I need to import animations from Maple into my LaTeX/Beamer presentation. I save a file in GIF format. But later I have problems converting that file into PNG. All I get is a static PNG file and can't proceed ((( What's the full code to do that in LaTeX?
You can use the animate package to animate a series of PNGs. To get the series of PNGs from an animated GIF, use a tool like ImageMagick's convert.

Also, your OS will matter. I don't know that Linux (not saying you're using it) has any ability to play animated PDFs. I've tried embedding movies using LaTeX and while it "works," you can't actually view them in anything Linux offers yet. Okular is working on it, but last I checked (couple months?) it's not possible yet.
Anyway, just wanted to add that just in case you were doing everything completely right and by chance are not seeing the fruits of your labor since you're using a Linux viewer. Check your work with Acrobat on Windows to be sure.
