I can't change the layout of the assistant editor in Xcode 11.2.
So the matching code of the storyboard is always on the right which drives me crazy bc I'm working with 21" screen.
The phenomen appears when updating Xcode from 11.1 to 11.2.
The Layout can be seen, but its greyed out. I cannot choose the available options Editor on left , Editor on top.
I've tried to change editor orientation, but have no success.
Opening a second editor below shows the assistant editor of the new editor pane on the right too?!
Updated for Xcode 13.x.x
You might've accidentally enabled Focus Mode which I just realized was the reason I couldn't open additional Editors:
Turn Focus Mode off and you should be able to add Editors as expected.
View > Editor > Toggle Focus (Hide Focus)
Shortcut: control + shift + command + return
Switched back to Xcode 10.2.1 with symlinking 13.x devices by Xcode 11.2 installation.

Xcode 12 is annoying me. In the storyboard I want to display the assistant editor below the storyboard but Xcodes sometimes stucks the editor to the right side.
Changing the menu option "Change Editor Orientation" seems to reflect the whole editor position but not the position of the assistant editor itself.
Even the orientation is set to vertical, sometimes the assistant editor goes to the right side, sometimes below.
So as I mentioned above that's what I want, I want to force Xcode to show the assistant always on the bottom side. But it always stucks onn the vertical, right position.
Even if a new editor with horizontal oriantation is opened, the position of the assitant editor won't change.
Also the layout pane is always greyed out and stuck in automatic despite I don't use the focused editor:
You can change its orientation By shortcut key
Press Option Key and hover on the editor icon.
This will give the below output.
Okay, for all desperates Xcode beginners: The Layout Panel becomes active if the assistant editor is opened regardeless the orientation:
Choosing the right or bottom changes the position of the assistant editor immediality.
I have updated xcode to the latest version ( Version 12.0 (12A7209)) and I can't show the toggle icons that show/hide inspector, debug or navigator Area
How can I show them again?
For the navigator the button is now at the far left, or use Command 0.
For the inspector the button is now at the far right, or use Command Option 0.
Also, in full screen mode you can summon the inspectors as overlays by hovering at the side with the mouse. Very cool as it saves space.
For the debug area there is no button; use Shift Command Y.
Basically this is a good time to learn the keyboard shortcuts!
After a few months of not writing any iOS code I upgraded to XCode 8.1 and opened a project. Strangely I am seeing two windows (see pasted image below). Annoyingly these two screens move in sync, show the same file, etc, but one cannot be closed. There is no 'X' at the top to close the window. Has anyone run into this and how can I get rid of one of the screens?
Probably you activated the version editor without noticing it. To revert to the standard editor, hit the button on the top right corner of the window with a drawing showing lines justified to the left (right next to a button with two circles and another with arrows).
Alternatively go to the menu:
View -> Standard Editor -> Show Standard Editor
or hit the Command + Return keys.
That should do it.
Font selection window that prompt out from the built in interface builder is unable to select font collection. It is stuck at a particular collection. When resizing the Font selection window, the collection column will show and immediately disappear once release the resizing.
I do not have an extra Mac, so I wish someone could help me verify this bug using latest release OS X and Xcode from App Store.
Steps to Reproduce:
Create a new SpriteKit game from the built-in template.
Open the GameScene.sks file.
Drop a SKLabelNode into the scene from the Object Library
Select the SKLabelNode and change its font using the Attribute Inspector by clicking the "T" icon on the Font field.
The Font selection window should prompt and resizing this window will make the column appear.
Expected Results:
The "Font Collection" window should always appear, and able to select any font from any collection.
Actual Results:
The "Font Collection" window always disappear.

Update 1
I try to install a fresh copy of Xcode (7.2.1) with another fresh OS X Yosemite 10.10.5/14F27 (with no xcode installed previously), the font collection column is there.
This affects all NSFontPanel instances across Xcode. (For example, it can also happen when selecting source editor fonts in Preferences, in Interface Builder inspectors, etc.) The master bug is radar://22656458.
Note that someone on the forum suggests a possible workaround:

I haven't tried this, and can't say whether it's a good idea, so YMMV.
defaults write -app Xcode NSFontPanelAttributes -string "1,0"
try this command in terminal, then restart Xcode
Is there an Xcode keyboard shortcut to jump directly to main editor window?
Cmd+J seems to be the closest, but it displays a UI for selecting which editor to open, or to open a new assistant editor.
There is a command in Xcode > Preferences > Key Bindings that is called Move Focus To Next Editor (Navigate Menu).
With it you jump to the main Editor and if you are in the main Editor you jump to the next editor until you had focus on all editors then you jump back to the main one.
Take a look at the official and this blog about Xcode shortcuts.
Xcode also has a pretty complete "Key Bindings" section in its preferences.
No there is no XCode Keyboard shortcut to jump directly to main editor window. But yes ⌘+J allows you to move to editor window. I am attaching a picture of probably all the shortcuts for XCode 4. I found this on a blog... The picture is quite big so you will have to zoom.
