How to test a Spring Data JPA project - spring

I have a Spring app, with these dependencies. the project contains only the services and repositories of another application, so there is no main class
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.data</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-data-jpa</artifactId>
<version>2.2.1.RELEASE</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.projectlombok</groupId>
<artifactId>lombok</artifactId>
<version>1.18.10</version>
<scope>provided</scope>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>junit</groupId>
<artifactId>junit</artifactId>
<version>4.12</version>
<scope>test</scope>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-test</artifactId>
<version>5.2.1.RELEASE</version>
<scope>test</scope>
</dependency>
</dependencies>
I want to test a service, so this is my service class:
I have this config file:
#EnableJpaRepositories(basePackages = "com.bonanza.backend.repository")
#EntityScan(basePackages = "com.bonanza.backend.service")
#EnableTransactionManagement
#EnableCaching
#Profile("dev")
#Configuration
#PropertySource("file:///${user.home}/.bonanza/backend-dev.properties")
public class DevBackendConfig {
}
and this one on the test package:
#Configuration
#Import({DevBackendConfig.class})
public class TestBackendConfig {
}
and this is my test class:
#ContextConfiguration(classes={TestBackendConfig.class})
#RunWith(SpringRunner.class)
public class CompanyServiceTests {
#Autowired
protected CompanyService companyService;
..
}
but when I run the test I have this error:

It seems that spring can't create bean for user JPA repo. It's ok, cause if you're doing unit test you should test only one layer of your application and mock the dependencies. This can be done with the help Mockito framework. Here is the nice introduction blog post. Resulting test code will look like this (we mocked all dependencies and created stubs where needed):
#RunWith(MockitoJUnitRunner.class)
public class TestUserResolver {
#Mock
private UserRepository userRepository;
#Mock
private RightsRequestRepository rightsRequestRepository;
#Mock
private NotifierService notifierService;
private UserResolver userResolver;
#Test
public void testListAllUsers() {
when(userRepository.findAll()).thenReturn(getFakeUserList());
userResolver = new UserResolver(userRepository, rightsRequestRepository, notifierService);
List<UserDTO> cs = userResolver.getAllUsers();
assertEquals(1, cs.size());
}
....}

I'm new in jee and spring boot and I'm struggling with this issue a few days ago, any advice or help will be appreciated. I tried the proposed solutions in similar issue, however it's not working for me.

Update:
Spring Boot Application
import app.dev.demo.model.User;
import repository.userRepository;
#SpringBootApplication
#ComponentScan({ "archi.dev.demo" })
public class DemoApplication {
public static void main(String[] args) {
SpringApplication.run(DemoApplication.class, args);
}
What I can do to fix this issue?
try adding something like this to your junit test
#TestConfiguration
static class testContextConfiguration {
#Bean
public userRepository userRepository() {
return new userRepository();
}
}
Or
you can try annotating your test class with #DataJpaTest if you're only going to test repository related actions
PS.: Maybe you already know that, but by convention, your classes should begin with a capital letter;
The variable names may not begin with the capital, but the subsequent words should;
So: UserRepository userRepository;

Error creating bean with name 'entityManager"

iv'e searched this question and tried adding the pom dependency (the jaxb 2.3.0) but it still hasn't fixed this error. Im new to Spring so please bear with me. I get this error when I try to run the test that comes with Spring boot as well as trying to run the run the package.

Like i said I have been searching and trying the posted answers but it seems to not work for me.
You need to configure spring data jpa using your application.properties file or custom configuration java class.
You can refer to this tutorial :
https://www.baeldung.com/the-persistence-layer-with-spring-and-jpa
Just add this dependency to your pom.xml:

I see from your POM file that you are using Java 10. The exception being raised is because the runtime cannot find the classes for JAXB on the classpath. These classes were included in the standard JDK until Java 9, but were then removed (slight oversimplification). As such you'll need to manually add the dependencies to your classpath via maven:
<dependency>
<groupId>javax.xml.bind</groupId>
<artifactId>jaxb-api</artifactId>
<version>2.3.0</version>
</dependency>
This is a duplicate of:
How to resolve java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/xml/bind/JAXBException in Java 9
Actually i have removed java 10 and bring back java 8 that resolved the problem. Now my test case successfully created. Well i have taken your idea that the problem is with java 10 that is causing the problem here. However i know i that there is no problem with java 10.
I wanted to upvote your comment but i can't due to my current reputation.

I can figure out that It is not scanning TestClass as bean.
Strange thing is that it is working with configuration.
//#ContextConfiguration(classes = { TestConfig.class })
package com.test;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Bean;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Configuration;
#Configuration
public class TestConfig {
#Bean
public TestClass testClass() {
return new TestClass();
}
}
I am not getting why it is not scanning class using xml file.
Please help me out.
Thanks in advance.
PS. This is a POC to replicate actual issue, that why having empty TestClass.
It's not working because of
profile="test"
in your test-app.xml.
You can remove it, run it with spring.profiles.active=test JVM parameter (-D) or add #ActiveProfiles(profiles = "test") to DummyTest.

Upgrade to Spring Boot 1.3 causes java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: org.springframework.beans.factory.config.ConfigurableBeanFactory.getSingletonMutex()

The test class is pretty simple:
package com.uss.identity.dao;
import com.uss.identity.TestApplication;
import org.junit.Test;
import org.junit.runner.RunWith;
import org.springframework.beans.factory.annotation.Autowired;
import org.springframework.boot.test.SpringApplicationConfiguration;
import org.springframework.test.context.ActiveProfiles;
import org.springframework.test.context.junit4.SpringJUnit4ClassRunner;
import org.springframework.transaction.annotation.EnableTransactionManagement;
import static org.junit.Assert.assertNull;
#SuppressWarnings("SpringJavaAutowiredMembersInspection")
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#SpringApplicationConfiguration(classes = {TestApplication.class})
#EnableTransactionManagement
#ActiveProfiles("test-flyway")
public class ClientRepoTest2 {
#Autowired
ClientRepository dao;
#Test
public void testFindNone() throws Exception {
assertNull(dao.findOne("nonesuch"));
}
}
And the referenced TestApplication class is just:
package com.uss.identity;
import org.springframework.boot.autoconfigure.SpringBootApplication;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Profile;
#SpringBootApplication
#Profile({"test", "test-flyway"})
public class TestApplication {
}
This worked fine when using Spring Boot 1.2.8.RELEASE. But trying to upgrade to 1.3.0.RELEASE causes the above exception.
You should use Spring Boot's dependency management to ensure that you get a consistent and correct version for all Spring Framework modules. You can do that either by using spring-boot-starter-parent as your pom's parent:
<parent>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-starter-parent</artifactId>
<version>1.3.0.RELEASE</version>
</parent>
or by importing it in your pom's <dependency-management> section:
<dependencyManagement>
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-dependencies</artifactId>
<version>1.3.0.RELEASE</version>
<type>pom</type>
<scope>import</scope>
</dependency>
</dependencies>
</dependencyManagement>
More information is available in the dependency management section of the Spring Boot documentation.
In my case the culprit was activemq-all.jar which was bundling old spring classes.
Found that out with -verbose:class flag.
