batch move file based on first few text on filename - windows

I was trying to move my files(books) based on it's author name.
For example:
[author] Title 1.pdf
[author2] Title A.pdf
I've found a batch script for this

It works but it made each folder for each files, what I want to do is create folder by author names and move it there.
Note: All author name have "[]" in it's file name but the folder created only has author name without "[]".
Please help, I have 4000+ files I need to sort.

The following script uses a for /F loop to split the file names which are gathered by the dir command:

The 2> nul portion suppresses error messages in case the directory to create already exists.
After having tested for the correct output, remove the upper-case ECHO commands from the md and move command lines. To avoid multiple 1 file(s) moved. messages, append SPACE + > nul to the move command line.
The trailing \ at the destination of the move command is intended to force it to point to a directory. Imagine the destination directory could not be created for some reason (for example, lack of access privileges), the destination without the \ is interpreted as a new file name in the working directory, leading to unintentional renaming; with the \ the move command expects an existing directory, and if not found an error arises.
Besides the fact that your code did not attempt to split the file names as needed, there is one additional problem: the && operator lets the following command execute only in case of success of the former one; so when md failed, move does not run. For example, you have got two files with the same author, so when iterating the second one, the destination directory already exists since it has been created in the previous iteration, so md fails and the respective file is not moved. Therefore you should have used the unconditional & operator.

Batch Create Several Folders Based on Multiple Filenames, and Move Multiple Related Files to The Created Folders

Every week, one of my co-workers has had to go through a folder with hundreds of demuxed video and audio files, rename each one individually for a specific city TV station and then sort them into folders based on the name of the city. I've created a .bat file to rename them all for him, and now I'd like to create a .bat file that creates new directories based on the filenames, and places the corresponding files into the new folders. I copied a few of the files to test with.
So the end result will be a "Houston" folder with all it's corresponding files, a "Compton" folder with it's files, a "Moline" folder, etc, etc... for every city, up to around 200 cities, and we're only getting more.
He's currently searching "Houston", cutting all the files that come up, creating a new folder manually, naming it "Houston" and pasting all the files into his new folder. FOR EVERY CITY. 200 TIMES. And it takes hours.
The files are ALWAYS named with this system: X### Random City, ST
With my little wee programming knowledge, I'm supposing that the script could detect all the characters after the first space, and before the comma, copy those characters (Random City), create a new folder, name it the copied characters (Random City) then move any files containing "Random City" in their filename into the newly created folder. The end result would be as such, just with a lot more folders.
Is there anyone more advanced than me who could explain the best way to to this?
I apologize in advance if I'm in the wrong place or not savvy enough. Cheers!
UPDATE: I messed around, learned about tokens and delimiters, variables etc. Here is what I have which works amazingly, except I'm not sure how to remove the comma at the end of the city name. I'm using space as the delimiter, which makes the text chunks the tokens if I understand correctly, including my comma, using tokens=2. Another problem that arises; Say there's a city with two text chunks (tokens) eg. San Fransisco, Baton Rouge. How could I grab both of them, using the comma as my stopping point? My code is below.

UPDATE 2: I found a meh workaround to get rid of the comma, by adding it as a delimiter, but I'm still trying to wrap my head around the 2 word cities. My Baton Rouge and San Fransisco folders are being named respectively, "Baton" and "San". Here is my code so far, I'll update if I find a better way.

If the number of characters in the prefix changes, which is likely, I'll either have to edit the batch file every time, or create a specific batch file for each circumstance. Not terrible, but not great either. So I went with Michael Heath's answer which works flawlessly. I'm not smart enough yet to know exactly why, but I'm gonna dissect it and find out. I have a lot of learning to do. Thanks, everyone!

1st will get the fullpath.
2nd to get the name before the comma.
3rd to get the name without the prefix.
In the nested for loops check if folder exists, create it if not. Then if folder exists, move file inside.

I can give you some hints. If you have a more specific problem case, feel free to update your question again.
You can cut the last X characters of a String like this: %variablename:~0,-X%
If you know the variables with the city parts, e.g. %%D and %%E or something, you can concatenate them again like this md "%%D %%E". However, this works just for a fixed number of tokens, like the two here.
You can store this concatenations in an own variable, if you need the result outside of your for-loop. Use set myVariable=%%D %%E for example, and show it with %myVariable% or !myVariable! (when delayed expansion is needed), for example md "%myVariable%".
A nifty workaround: if there are only a small number of "special cities" to take into consideration, then you could just add some rename commands at the end of your script, like rename San "San Francisco", rename Baton "Baton Rouge", etc. Will not work well, if there are more "San" cities (e.g. "San Bernadino"), because this cannot be distinguished anymore. But in this case, the copying into separate folders would already fail as well.
In your script you make a check for an existing folder. I think you can omit that. md or mkdir either create that directory or do nothing if it exists. Well, they do print a message to the console, which can be ignored. If you do not want to see them, redirect the error message stream to nul like this md myFolder 2>nul. This will swallow any error messages, but it is unlikely that you get any other error message than that in your scenario.
You could simplify your approach like this: I reckon your file renaming works well. Your "copy" script could be just a list of commands which are stated explicitly (and also could be edited fairly quickly if new cities are to be considered).
Set the batch file up like this with entries for each city:

Side effect is, that the folders for each city will be created, not just those where files are copied into. May be it suits your needs anyhow.
Also, I would like to give you pointers to sources of help/documentation:
On the command line you can get extensive help by executing the commands used in your batch file and appending /?. For example set /? gives you a lot of useful things you can do with variables/String manipulations.
Try: for /?, if /? (regarding errorlevel for example), maybe call /?, goto /?, and others.
A very good source for all the command line commands is https://www.ss64.com. This site provides extensive help even for PowerShell and Linux Bash and others. Relevant to you in this case would be CMD, direct link: https://ss64.com/nt/
Edit/Update:
Check out symbol replacement on the set command to build something like

The first part "cuts" the first character and checks, if it is an M and if so, it keeps everything except the first character. With this you could make your filenames even out to process them inside your batch file.
You can also "remove" a letter or substring with %myVariable:, TX=% which would replace any ", TX" occurance with "nothing" for example.
Oh, this could also help to remove any spaces in the filename. Then you could extract the "SanFrancisco" without a spaces problem ;) The folder name would be without space though. This could be resolved with further rename commands at the end.

This method filters your files with the where command. It selects for moving, only file names which end with a comma, followed by a space, followed by two letters, followed by a three letter extension beginning with the character m. It moves the files, automatically creating the destination directories if they do not exist, using the robocopy command. It uses only two for loops, the second of which, isolates the string between the first space and the next comma.
I have made it so that the script can be located anywhere, not necessarily in the directory with the files. This location is set on line 3 of the script, If you wish to modify it, please ensure that your location remains between the = and the closing double-quote, ", and does not end with a trailing back-slash, \. It is currently set to a relative directory, (based upon that visible in your screen-shot), but you could obviously use an absolute path too, e.g. Set "SourceDir=C:\Users\UserName\Videos". If you wish to keep the script in the same directory as the files to be moved, change it to read Set "SourceDir=." and just double-click it to run.
When I had to develop a script for the task at hand I would probably implement a few safety features in order to not move wrong files. Your sample data show pairs of .m2v and .mpa files, but I would likely not consider that as granted. Also would I not rely on a fixed-length prefix. Finally, I would perhaps also account for lit's comment.
So here is my attempt (see all the explanatory rem-remarks in the code):

The values in the Define constants here: section at the top of the script are defined to suit your sample data, but they can easily be adapted there to configure the script at one place:
_ROOT: points to the directory where your input files are; %~dp0. points to the parent directory of the script, but you may of course specify any other absolute directory path here;
_MASK: is a file pattern that matches one file per pair (only .m2v files, others are covered by _EXTS); M??? matches the four-character prefix, but you can change it to M?*, for instance, to also match prefixes like M1 or M9999; if you do so, however, also edit _FILT accordingly;
_EXTS: defines a list of extensions that all must be present; that means for a certain base file name (like M372 Houston, TX, there must exist a file per each given extension, hence M372 Houston, TX.m2v and M372 Houston, TX.mpa in our situation, otherwise these files are not going to be moved; if you do not care if such a pair is complete or not, simply state set "_EXTS=" (so clear it) and change the extension of _MASK from .m2v to .m*, so all files with an extension beginning with .m are moved;
_FILT: constitutes an additional filter for file names in order to exclude wrong files; this currently also reflects a four-character prefix, but if this is not always the case, just change M[0-9][0-9][0-9] to M[0-9]*; if you do not want to filter, set this to .*, so it matches everything;
_SEPS: defines the character(s) to split the base file name in order to derive the respective sub-directory, so everything ending before that character and beginning after the first SPACE is the resulting sub-directory name; if you do not define a character here, the whole remaining base file name (so everything after the first SPACE until but not including the (last) .) is taken;

Parsing every file in submap recursively to output folder whilst maintaining relativity

I'm using the following batch code to convert all files in a certain directory if the target file doesn't already exist however I'm stuck at getting this to run through every submap and file within that (and keep the output relative with that submap)
So I currently use this:

This works perfectly for a single folder (as was intended), it takes all the files in that specific folder, and passes them as arguments to my executable, which then outputs the file on the path of the second argument.
However this also contains a flaw (this is an additional problem though..) as it does not work if the output -folder- does not exist, so if possible I'd also want it to create the folder if need be.
I've found some batch documentation (I really don't have much experience with Batch) showing me a command called FORFILES and the /R parameter, however I couldn't adjust this so it'd keep the relative paths for the output too, it'd require string manipulation and I have no clue on how to do that.
So the result I'm after is something like this, it takes any file deeper than "input/textures/ for example:
input/textures/some/very/deep/submap/why/does/it/go/on/myfile.anyExtension
it should then take that file (and relative path) and basically change "input" with "output" and replace the file extension with .dds like this:
ouput/textures/some/very/deep/submap/why/does/it/go/on/myfile.dds
and pass those two strings to my executable.

You would need to change the settings of sourcedir and destdir to suit your circumstances.
First, perform an xcopy with the /L option to list-only the individual fullnames of files that would be copied by the xcopy.
Assign each name found from %%a to destfile, then remove all characters before the source-directoryname from that filename, and replace that string with the destination directoryname.
This will yield the destination name for the file (with the original extension). The only exception will be the very last output line, which is a count-of-files report. Since this line will not contain the source directoryname, the replacement will not take place, so %%a will be the same as !destfile! - so we eliminate that.
Now assign the destination filename to a metavariable so we can select its various parts, and if the filename made from the destination drive and pathname, the name part of the original file and .dds does not exist, then make the destination directoryname and execute the imageparser, providing the desired output filename.
Note that these last two are ECHOed instead of being executed for testing purposes. Remove the ECHOes to actually perform the command.
Note that / is a switch-indicator, \ is a directory-separator.
Note that MD will report an error if the directory already exists. Append 2>nul to the end of the md command to suppress that error message.

How to execute an application existing in each specific folder of a directory tree on a file in same folder?

I have some folders with different names. Each folder has a specific structure as listed below:

Contents
x64
Folder1.aaxplugin
TransVST_Fixer.exe
Folder 2
Contents
x64
Folder 2.aaxplugin
TransVST_Fixer.exe
There are two files within each subfolder x64. One file has the same name as the folder two folder levels above. The other file is an .exe file whose name is the same in all folders.
Now I need to run file with file extension aaxplugin on each specific .exe file. It would be obviously very time consuming opening each and every single folder and drag & drop each file on .exe to run it on this file.
That's why I am trying to create a batch script to save some time.
I looked for solutions here on Stack Overflow. The only thing I have found so far was a user saying this: When I perform a drag & drop, the process 'fileprocessor.exe' is executed. When I try to launch this exe, though, CMD returns error ('not recognized or not batch file' stuff).
How can I do this?

I used first a batch file with following line to copy the executable into x64 subfolder of Folder1.

The command FOR with option/R searches recursive in all directories of directory %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\test being expanded on your machine to C:\Users\Davide\Desktop for files with file extension aaxplugin. The loop variable F contains on each loop run the name of the found file with full path without surrounding double quotes.
The drive and path of each found file is assigned to environment variable FilePath.
Next a case-sensitive string comparison is done between file path with all occurrences of string \x64\ case-insensitive removed with unmodified file path.
Referencing value of environment variable FilePath must be done here using delayed expansion because being defined and evaluated within a block defined with ( ... ). Otherwise command processor would expand %FilePath% already on parsing the entire block resulting in a syntax error on execution because string substitution is not possible as no environment variable FilePath defined above body block of FOR loop.
The strings are not equal if path of file contains a folder with name x64. This means on provided folder structure that the file is in folder x64 and not somewhere else and therefore the application is executed next from its original location to fix the found *.aaxplugin file.
The line with IF is for the folder structure example:

There is one more difference in comparison to first code. Now the last 5 characters of path of file are compared case-insensitive with the string \x64\. Therefore the file must be really inside a folder with name x64 or X64. A folder with name x64 or X64 anywhere else in path of file does not result anymore in a true state for the condition as in first two batch codes.
But if for some unknown reason it is really necessary to run the application in same folder as the found *.aaxplugin and the directory of the file must be the current directory, the following batch code could be used:

The path of the file referenced with %%~dpF always ends with a backslash which is the reason why there is no backslash left of TransVST_Fixer.exe (although command processor could handle also file with with two backslashes in path).
In batch code above character # is used as loop variable because %%~dp#TransVST_Fixer.exe is easier to read in comparison to %%~dpFTransVST_Fixer.exe. It is more clear for a human with using # as loop variable where the reference to loop variable ends and where name of application begins. For the command processor it would not make a difference if loop variable is # or upper case F.
A lower case f would work here also as loop variable, but is in general problematic as explained on Modify variable within loop of batch script.
For understanding the used commands and how they work, open a command prompt window, execute there the following commands, and read entirely all help pages displayed for each command very carefully.

Assuming:
The Directory structure is fixed and the files are indeed in a subfolder contents\X64\.
MyExe.exe is the same (name) in every folder.
There is only one file *.ext in every folder.
I'll give you the script I created for doing so, hope it works for you

Please note that I placed the fixer inside the root folder so I just have to copy it once. You have to place it inside your root folder and execute it. What it does:
iterate over each folder
for each one it enters /Contents/x64, executes the fixer (wich is 3 levels above) and after that returns to the original folder.
If you have your plugins in a different folder, you just have to change this part replacing the path for the one you have your plugins in.
cd "/Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Avid\Audio\Plug-Ins"
REMEMBER to place the script on that folder. For this example I place my script on the folder "/Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Avid\Audio\Plug-Ins" and run it (as a .bat).
PS: the fixer will place the fixed plugins in "C:\Users\Public\modified" (just read the screen while executing, it gives you the new files path. If you want to move them to the right path, you can execute this from the new files path ("C:\Users\Public\modified")

with that, I iterate over every plugin and create a folder with the same name (I create _temp because of name colision, after moving the file I rename it to the correct one), also with the subfolder "/Contents/x64", and move the plugin inside. Once donde, you can just take the resulting folders and place them in their correct path.
Hope it works, for me it works like a charm.

How to append string after file extension via batch file

Checking the integrity of zip archives recursively how can i rename bad files in a folder by appending a string after the file extension via a batch file under Windows?
I tried this script and it gives me no errors but doesn't rename bad files either.

I have experience in PHP scripting and understand this code block in general (the meaning of the pipe and the logical OR operator). However, i have absolutely no experience in Batch-scripting and adopted the script from this source. From what i understand the check receives either an "OK" or adds an entry to the log file and renames the file. The log entry is added, however the renaming is not applied. I don't understand why. Can you tell me what is going wrong and how it would have to look to work as intended?

In help of 7-zip there is a page about Exit Codes. As it can be read on this help page any value greater 0 means something was wrong.
Therefore if errorlevel 1 can be used to check if the test on the ZIP file was positive (exit code is 0) or failed (value is greater or equal 1).
Look on help output in a command prompt window after entering if /? or help if for details about errorlevel. if errorlevel 1 means: if exit code of previous command was greater or equal 1 then ...
Further command ren requires just new file name without path as second parameter as otherwise it does not rename the file specified with or without path as first parameter. This is the reason why %%~nxA must be used as second parameter for command ren to reference just name and extension of the file to rename. Help of command for output after entering for /? or help for contains a list of those modifier letters for a file name.

Simple Batch Script for File Consolidation - Beginner Problems

I have identical files in four folders (named "1", "2", "3", "4") and would like to copy these files into a single folder, with the original folder name appended to the filename.
E.g. a file called "data.txt" in each folder should be copied to a new merged folder, with filenames such as "data 1.txt" "data 2.txt" etc.
Here is what I have so far, but I never formally learned batch scripting (and can't find any decent tutorials - recommendations please?) and can't seem to make it work. Hopefully this gives an idea of what I want to accomplish.

Your attempt to set dir appears to be a bash command - useful on *nix but no good on CMD.
Essentially, you can set the current directory using cd
cd "c:\your\desired directory"
Quirkishly, the quotes in that particular command are actually unnecessary (but do no harm, so I put them in.)
Another approach is

I've used the second approach in the above script to switch temporarily to my test directory U:\sourcedir
Note that cmd uses \ as a directory-separator and / as a switch-indicator.
The md command is as you had it. The directory is created relative to the current directory unless the path is specified (eg md "C:\somewhere new"). The2>nulsuppresses thedirectory already exists` message should the directory er, already exist.
in a for...do statement, either the target operation must be on the same line as the do or the do must be followed by Space( and then each statement until a matching ) is executed as a compound statement.
The for..%%i statement assigns the values "1".."4" (including the quotes) to %%i The quotes are actually not required in this case - they only need to be there if the required string includes a Space (or other separator.)
The next command is best understood from the middle. The dir command looks in ".\%%~i\" for files named *.txt. ~i means "remove quotes from %%i". The /b switch shows just filenames - no size, date or header/footer. The /a-d switch says 'no directories'.
This dir command is within single-quotes. FOR /f ...('single-quoted command')... processes the result of the command as if it was a file, line-by-line. The "delims=" suppresses the default tokenising of the strings found, so overall, the filenames found by the dir are assigned to %%m in their entirity.
The command then executed is the copy, copying from ".\%%~i\%%m" (ie. the current directory++the subdirectory(-quotes)++filename; all quoted in case of spaces) to ".\consolidated files\%%~nm %%~i%%~xm" (ie. the current directory+\consolidated files+the name part of the filename (%%~nm)+Space+the subdirectory(-quotes)+the extension part of the filename (%%~xm))
Note that + is a valid filename character (as is ') and that strings are built simply by being butted up one against the next.
Your original question stated that the source directoryname should be appended after a space, hence I've included the space.
Note that copy will report 1 file(s) copied after each copy. You can suppress this by adding >nul to the end of the copy statement.
For testing, I would change copy to echo copy which will show the command generated but not execute it. Unfortunately, if you have the >nul in place, the echo of the command will be suppressed...
