I installed Ubuntu 20.04 on my VirtualBox on my Windows 10 PC.
One of the tasks I wanted to do, was rename a bunch of files with the .txt extension to a .html extension. After searching online, I found that using the rename command would work.
But when attempting to run rename, I get the following error:
Command 'rename' not found. Did you mean:
Command 'hrename' from deb hsfutils (3.2.6-14)
Try: sudo apt install < deb name>
Upon trying
sudo apt install rename
I get the following error:
Unable to locate package rename
I also tried
sudo apt update
But it did not work.
Could someone tell me what to do?
Open your terminal and paste the following command
sudo apt-get install rename
Same issue.
E: Unable to locate package rename
I ended up just downloaded the .deb file.
https://ubuntu.pkgs.org/22.04/ubuntu-universe-amd64/rename_1.30-1_all.deb.html
Make sure you have perl installed.
sudo apt install perl-base --upgrade
Just for the record, rename on Linux is NOT the same as rename on windows. Rename is a powerful tool for doing batch file renames with complex patterns in one line that would otherwise take multiple lines with bash, find, mv, and other commands.

I am trying to install apertium-eng-ita package from source (available at https://github.com/apertium/apertium-eng-ita). The system is debian 11 (i tried also on fresh ubuntu, get the same error). So i downloaded all the files into my /root directory (/root/eng-ita contents all the files from provided link) and run:
./autogen.sh
This generated all the necessary files inside the "eng-ita" folder, including "Makefile". But then i run:
make
and see errors like:
apertium-validate-dictionary apertium-eng-ita.eng-ita.dix /bin/bash:
apertium-validate-dictionary: command not found make: ***
[Makefile:769: eng-ita.autobil.bin] Error 127
I began googling (for example, here is some info - https://wiki.apertium.org/wiki/Installation_troubleshooting) this 127 error and found some information about PATH, but where i can put this PATH to make it work?
If you're installing from source, you should first add the apt source and install apertium-all-dev which will give you make etc. Cf. https://wiki.apertium.org/wiki/Prerequisites_for_Debian you should
curl -sS https://apertium.projectjj.com/apt/install-nightly.sh | sudo bash
sudo apt-get -f install locales build-essential automake subversion git pkg-config \
gawk libtool apertium-all-dev
(But you don't need to install from source if you just want to use the pair and not develop for it. There are nightly debian packages of the latest git commit; after running the first command you can get that package with sudo apt install apertium-eng-ita)
I am getting the below error on running this query CREATE EXTENSION IF NOT EXISTS "uuid-ossp";
SQLSTATE[58P01]: Undefined file: 7 ERROR: could not open extension control file "C:/Program File
s/2ndQuadrant/PostgreSQL/9.6/share/extension/uuid-ossp.control": No such file or directory (SQL:
CREATE EXTENSION IF NOT EXISTS "uuid-ossp")
Old question but I found it when I had a similar problem.
To install the uuid-ossp extension, you need to have some extra modules installed on the server you're on.
You can get those modules by installing postgresql-contrib, for example, on a Red Hat server, you'd do
sudo yum install postgresql-contrib
Also, note that if you need specific Postgres versions of the modules, you can do something like:
sudo yum install postgresql13-contrib
I had this problem and the first answer solved it for me.
Probably you are missing modules.
sudo yum install postgresql-contrib and try again.
My mac is having MacOS 10.12.4 (Sierra). And I have installed homebrew using command line. This is what look like when I run "brew config" command.
Then I wanted to install class-dump using following command.
"brew install class-dump". But when it gives me following error. Can some one tell me the reason and what should I do?
I was able to solve the problem by installing class-dump manually without using home brew. I downloaded the class-dump in using this link. Then copy the class-dump file to the following location "/usr/local/bin". Then all works fine
Here is a one liner for the lazy people if you already have wget:
$ wget -qO- http://stevenygard.com/download/class-dump-3.5.tar.gz | tar xvz - -C /usr/local/bin
I am working on Windows 10. I want to run a "make build" in MINGW64 but following error comes up:
$ make build
bash: make: command not found
I want to build Glide for Golang
I tried following:
$ sudo yum install build-essential
bash: sudo: command not found
As well as:
$ yum install build-essential
bash: yum: command not found
And:
$ apt-cyg build-essential
bash: apt-cyg: command not found
How can I "work-around" this problem?
Go to ezwinports, https://sourceforge.net/projects/ezwinports/files/
Download make-4.2.1-without-guile-w32-bin.zip (get the version
without guile)
Extract zip
Copy the contents to C:\ProgramFiles\Git\mingw64\ merging the folders, but do NOT overwrite/replace any exisiting files.
You can also use Chocolatey.
Having it installed, just run:
choco install make
When it finishes, it is installed and available in Git for Bash / MinGW.
You have to install mingw-get and after that you can run mingw-get install msys-make to have the command make available.
Here is a link for what you want http://www.mingw.org/wiki/getting_started
We can't use the 'make' command on windows and we don't get it preinstalled with MINGW. So to use it, you need to download it first. The steps are as follows-
Go to https://sourceforge.net/projects/mingw/postdownload and download it.
After the installation is over, go and check if bin folder is present in the directory of MINGW .
If everything works well till now, change the environment variables- go to settings of your laptop and type Environment variables. Go to it's section and click on 'environment variables' at the end.
On the section where 'path' is written, add a new file - the location of the bin file and save.
Install make by typing the following on mingw command line :
mingw-get install mingw32-make
Now make is installed. To use it in command line just write "mingw32-make" in place of "make".
Try using cmake itself.
In the build directory, run:
cmake --build .
Go to downloads of jmeubank.github.io/tdm/gcc : https://jmeubank.github.io/tdm-gcc/download/
Download 64+32-bit MinGW-w64 edition.
Run the .exe file.
Click on Remove if you have tdm-gcc already.
Then Click on Create to install tdm-gcc.
Complete the installation.
Add path to environment variable if not added automatically.
Now run mingw32-make on your terminal / command prompt.
Hope this works
You have to install make first. Run any of the below commands and it will work.
pip install make
OR
conda install make
I am trying to upload my app on Cydia and it requires .deb package. I am unable to figure out how to make .deb packages on mac. I am using 10.6.3 when I write this command on terminal
dpkg-deb -b MyProgram
Terminal output is
-bash: dpkg-deb: command not found
I've install fink, Mac ports insert Mac DVD to find out but nothing helps.
It's available on Homebrew:
brew install dpkg
If you don't have Homebrew installed, go to brew.sh. It's a simple one-liner to install.
Homebrew is less invasive, less complicated, and more popular than Macports or similar.
I installed mac ports 1.7 through terminal as no package is available.
After that I installed Mac ports 1.9 through installer.
Then goto this path /opt/local/bin and run sudo port selfupdate
after that execute sudo port install dpkg
it will take some time and after that your dpkg is successfully configured.
Run this command sudo dpkg-deb -b MyProgram to make MyProgram.deb
Note MyProgram should contain DEBIAN folder and under that control file remove txt extention
Below is control file

dont forget to place a new line at the end of control file otherwise you will get an error.
You need Xcode installed on your system before using mac ports - you find it on the second mac DVD, I think. After that, you can install mac ports and then via the Terminal type "sudo port install dpkg", press return and enter your password. It may take some time to compile. You tried that?
Best option is to use FPM and you can create it in 50 secs:
fpm
