We're trying to build some Windows driver (on Windows 10 Enterprise) from within Jenkins. To do that, we were using the Visual Studio 2019 Build Tools, installed the SDK and the WDK as described here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/download-the-wdk
Doing that will always result in the following error message:
error MSB8020: The build tools for WindowsKerne
lModeDriver10.0 (Platform Toolset = 'WindowsKernelModeDriver10.0') cannot be found. To build using the WindowsKernelModeDriver10.0 build tools, please install WindowsKerne
lModeDriver10.0 build tools. Alternatively, you may upgrade to the current Visual Studio tools by selecting the Project menu or right-click the solution, and then selecti
ng "Retarget solution".
Doing the same on a PC where Visual Studio is installed will work.
The interesting part is:
Using the .iso image linked on the page, where Microsoft claims that it would include the VS2019 build tools + SDK + WDK, works as well.
Now I do not want to use that ISO file, as we already have the Visual Studio build tools installed on our Jenkins machines - for building other C++ software.
Is there any known solution available to just extend an existing build tools 2019 installation to allow building Windows drivers?
My windows version is Win 10 1803. I installed Visual studio professional 2017, and along with that I installed SDK 10.0.17134.1 and WDK 10.0.17134.1. I restarted the system, and the visual code, yet the option of creating a Windows driver project under Visual C++ is not showing.
Methods tried:
Re-installation of WDK,
Rebooting the system,
Using same version of WDK and SDK as mentioned in Microsoft site.
This solution worked.

Since the extension that works with Visual studio does not pop-up on its own, manually executing through cmd solves the purpose.
I have installed the Enterprise version of Visual Studio 2017 v 15.8.4 on Windows 7 Professional. I have downloaded the UWP Samples, when I attempt to load any of the C++ UWP sample solutions such as the Altimeter solution I get the error ..."This project is incompatible with the current version of Visual Studio." Online I found the suggestion that with a prior version of VS reloading the project worked, but in my case the project is greyed out. What is the problem?
From Visual Studio 2017 Product Family System Requirements:
Universal Windows app development, including designing, editing, and debugging, requires Windows 10. Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2012 R2 may be used to build Universal Windows apps from the command line.
You need Windows 10 to open UWP samples in Visual Studio 2017.
Have to ask this question once again here as none of the replies I found solve the issue.
So the goal is to set up the debugger for Qt Creator on Windows 8.1 x64. Visual Studio 2015 Update 3 (Community) and Qt 5.7 32-bit are installed on the system. As far as I understand I need Debugging Tools For Windows, which are a part of the Windows SDK. Visual Studio seems to install Windows SDK, but it doesn't have debugging tools. If I look into "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Debuggers" I see only one folder there, which is "x64" (and I suppose there must have been "x86" for 32-bit Qt). That folder contains three .dll files and no cdb.exe.
I tried to install Windows Debugging Tools manually as a part of Windows SDK, downloaded from here, but when I run the installer it gives me the error:
I guess that's because VS already has Windows SDK. Should I uninstall some component from Visual Studio? But I really don't want to break it.
Any help is appreciated
Is it possibility to create windows universal app for windows 10 in Visual Studio 2013? Should I install some kind of SDK, and after that everything will be ok or I have to use VS2015?
VS2013 won't work, you have to use VS2015.
You can run VS2015 on Windows 10, Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 to create Windows 10 apps.
Make sure to install the components for Windows Universal App Development during the installation of VS 2015. VS 2015 can be installed side by side with VS 2013.
More info can be found on MSDN
No need to have 2015. Not everyone is having this.
If you are using a different development environment than Visual Studio 2015, you can download a standalone Windows SDK for Windows 10 installer. Note that you don’t need to install this SDK if you’re using Visual Studio 2015 Update 3 – it's already included.
