The terminal prompt on my Mac currently looks something like this: hostname username %
As far as I understand, the % means I'm logged in as root.
However, I went into my mac system preferences and checked, and it looks like I have root user disabled.
Not sure what's going on here. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks
With the release of macOS Catalina Apple switched from bash to zsh as the default Shell.
The percent sign % is zsh's prompt.
You're not logged as root.

macOS 11.4 , Alacritty 0.8.0 installed from homebrew 3.2.5 , although this should not matter because the question is mostly related to macOS UI.
What I want to do is something equivalent to Terminal.app's right click on icon > New Window sort of thing; Alacritty does not support windows.
On Linux, I'm used to launching new instance of alacritty with background option in dmenu.
On a mac, what would a similar action look like ?
I think pressing command + N does the trick

Using chsh I can change my login shell. However, how do I change my non-login shell? I am using Linux Mint with Cinnamon desktop.
I found the answer on AskUbuntu:
Cinnamon uses gnome-terminal and one must edit their profile to run any other shell than the default (bash).

With W7x64, all commands ("mkdir", "ping", "ipconfig", or the installed "composer") grant an "access refused" error.
I shut down firewall (Comodo), disabled UAC, launched cmd as administrator, created a brand new administrator session, checked and altered owning permissions (setting them to my account), and, of course, restarted the damn machine.
Last piece of information, but I don't think it has any relevance : system is on SSD.
Edit : Here is a screen shot:
I can't figure what happened to my command line, but installing an alternative (I choose conemu) makes things returning to their old self again.

Above is my latest gripe with OSX 10.10. It just started today. I've already restarted and still cannot get past this. Has anyone experienced this or does anyone know how to solve it?
This is what it looks like on my dock ->
Are you sure that's not an older version of Terminal? Have you tried running it from the Utilities folder?
To see where the targets are for the items in your dock, hold command while clicking them.
