I'm trying to automatically create a profile for a user when a user is created.
I'm using the created event and overriding the boot() method. But I when call the create() method on user->profile->create(), it says create was called on null. I checked and profile is null in this.
Here's the code:
static::created(function ($user) {
// it returns profile as null, thus create() can't be used on null.
$user->profile->create(['title' => $user->username,]);
});
Can anyone help me understand this? It's working in my tutor's code, and he is using Laravel 5.8 but I have version 7.1.
$user->profile returns the related model if any exists. You have to do $user->profile() which returns a query builder to query the relation. Try to do it like so:
$user->profile()->create(['title' => $user->username,]);

I am working on a Laravel 7 project. In my project, I am doing the route model binding. But it is not working and the model in the route is always returning null. This is what I have done so far.
I declare a route
Route::put('restaurant-category/{category}', 'RestaurantCategoryController#update')->name('restaurant-category.update');
As you can see, there is a placeholder for model binding, {category}.
This is my action in the controller.
public function update(RestaurantCategory $category, UpdateRestaurantCategoryRequest $request)
{
//here $category is always null even if I passed the valid category id.
}
In the action method, the $category is always null even if I passed the correct id for it. What is wrong with my code and how can I fix it?
First you have to order, the controller method is first Request $request and then the model injection:
public function update(UpdateRestaurantCategoryRequest $request, RestaurantCategory $category)
{
//here $category is always null even if I passed the valid category id.
}
I don't know if this can be of any help to anyone with a similar problem, but I had everything set up correctly and still didn't work.
My problem was that for some reason the grouped routes didn't use the "binding" middleware. When I added the "binding" middleware to my group is started working again. Bear in mind that I had that set up correctly in my Kernel.php but for some reason it wasn't used.
Leaving this here in case it happens to someone else
In AppServiceProvider, I called a function from a custom helper as follows:
public function boot()
{
View::share('tree', customhelper::generateSiteTree(0));
}
The custom helper file is calling the database function as below:
$children = UserPermission::getLeftNavByUserId($startAt);
In the custom helper function, I want to pass the current logged in user ID however, dd(Auth::user()) is returning null.
How can I pass the Auth::user()->id with the method
getLeftNavByUserId($startAt, Auth::user()->id);
The variable (or Facade) isn't available yet. One way to solve this is by using a view composer.
View::composer('my.view.with.children', function(View $view){
$view->with('children', UserPermission::getLeftNavByUserId($startAt, Auth::id()));
});
Ofcourse you need to add a check if the user is logged in or not etc.
Custom helper function will be initialized in application instance before the Auth middleware therfore it will always be null, if you want to use the auth user bind it from middlware instead.
I am working with laravel 4.2 and have table in db with property is_active.
When I try to access this model property:
$model->is_active
I am getting following error:
Relationship method must return an object of type Illuminate\Database\Eloquent\Relations\Relation
So question is how to access this property?
Please do not recommend to rename this field in the database if possible because this is already existing database in production.
Here is my model class:
class Position extends \Eloquent {
protected $table = "hr_positions";
protected $fillable = ['slug', 'info_small', 'info_full', 'is_active', 'start_date', 'end_date', 'tags', 'user_create_id', 'user_update_id'];
use \MyApp\Core\StartEndDateTrait;
public function postulations(){
return $this->hasMany('Postulation', 'position_id', 'id');
}
}
Latest notice:
All this error ocurrs on a page where I am creating my entity. In the controller before forwarding to the page I am doing:
$position = new \Position();
and then, for example, following code produce error as well:
dd(($position->getAttribute('is_active')));
but if I replace $position = new \Position(); with
$position = \Position::first();
error is gone?
What is going on here?????
Laravel does a lot of magic behind the scenes, as in, calls a lot of php magic methods.
If a called property is not defined, __call is invoked which in Eloquent calls getAttribute().
Steps taken by getAttribute($key) are
Is there a database field by this key? If so, return it.
Is there a loaded relationship by this key? If so, return it.
Is there a camelCase method of this key? If so, return it. (is_active looks for isActive method)
Returns null.
The only time that exception is thrown is in step 3.
When you create a new instance, eloquent has no idea what kind of fields it has, so if you have a method by the same name, it will always throw a relation error, this seems to be the case in both Laravel4 and Laravel5.
How to avoid it? Use the getAttributeValue($key) method. It has no relation checks and returns null by default.
Alternatively you can also add a get mutator for your field.
I have found a hack for this. Still not ideal but at least I have some solution. Better any than none.
So This code produce problem:
$position = new \Position();
if($position->is_active){
//
}
and this one works fine, this is solution even hacky but solution:
$position = new \Position(['is_active' => 0]);
if($position->is_active){
//
}
I will wait if someone give better, cleaner solution. If no one comes in next few days I will accept mine.
I have the following code in 'saved' model event:
Session::flash('info', 'Data has been saved.')`
so everytime the model is saved I can have a flash message to inform users. The problem is, sometimes I just need to update a field like 'status' or increment a 'counter' and I don't need a flash message for this. So, is it possible to temporarily disable triggering the model event? Or is there any Eloquent method like $model->save() that doesn't trigger 'saved' event?
Solution for Laravel 8.x and 9.x
With Laravel 8 it became even easier, just use saveQuietly method:
$user = User::find(1);
$user->name = 'John';
$user->saveQuietly();

Solution for Laravel 7.x, 8.x and 9.x
On Laravel 7 (or 8 or 9) wrap your code that throws events as per below:
$user = User::withoutEvents(function () use () {
$user = User::find(1);
$user->name = 'John';
$user->save();
return $user;
});

Solution for Laravel versions from 5.7 to 6.x
The following solution works from the Laravel version 5.7 to 6.x, for older versions check the second part of the answer.
In your model add the following function:
public function saveWithoutEvents(array $options=[])
{
return static::withoutEvents(function() use ($options) {
return $this->save($options);
});
}
Then to save without events proceed as follow:
$user = User::find(1);
$user->name = 'John';
$user->saveWithoutEvents();
For more info check the Laravel 6.x documentation
Solution for Laravel 5.6 and older versions.
In Laravel 5.6 (and previous versions) you can disable and enable again the event observer:
// getting the dispatcher instance (needed to enable again the event observer later on)
$dispatcher = YourModel::getEventDispatcher();
// disabling the events
YourModel::unsetEventDispatcher();
// perform the operation you want
$yourInstance->save();
// enabling the event dispatcher
YourModel::setEventDispatcher($dispatcher);
For more info check the Laravel 5.5 documentation
There is a nice solution, from Taylor's Twitter page:
Add this method to your base model, or if you don't have one, create a trait, or add it to your current model
public function saveQuietly(array $options = [])
{
return static::withoutEvents(function () use ($options) {
return $this->save($options);
});
}
Then in you code, whenever you need to save your model without events get fired, just use this:
$model->foo = 'foo';
$model->bar = 'bar';
$model->saveQuietly();
Very elegant and simple :)
Call the model Object then call unsetEventDispatcher
after that you can do whatever you want without worrying about Event triggering
like this one:
$IncidentModel = new Incident;
$IncidentModel->unsetEventDispatcher();
$incident = $IncidentModel->create($data);
To answer the question for anyone who ends up here looking for the solution, you can disable model listeners on an instance with the unsetEventDispatcher() method:
$flight = App\Flight::create(['name' => 'Flight 10']);
$flight->unsetEventDispatcher();
$flight->save(); // Listeners won't be triggered
In laravel 8.x :
Saving A Single Model Without Events
Sometimes you may wish to "save" a given model without raising any events. You may accomplish this using the saveQuietly method:
$user = User::findOrFail(1);
$user->name = 'Victoria Faith';
$user->saveQuietly();
See Laravel docs
In laravel 7.x you can do that as easy as
use App\User;
$user = User::withoutEvents(function () {
User::findOrFail(1)->delete();
return User::find(2);
});
See more in Laravel 7.x Muting Events documentation
You shouldnt be mixing session flashing with model events - it is not the responsibility of the model to notify the session when something happens.
It would be better for your controller to call the session flash when it saves the model.
This way you have control over when to actually display the message - thus fixing your problem.
Although it's a long time since the question, I've found a way to turn off all events at once. In my case, I'm making a migration script, but I don't want any event to be fired (either from Eloquent or any other).
The thing is to get all the events from the Event class and remove them with the forget method.
Inside my command:
$events = Event::getRawListeners();
foreach ($events as $event_name => $closure) {
Event::forget($event_name);
}
The only thing that worked for me was using the trait WithoutEvents. This will be executed inside the setUp method and does prevent any dispatch you have added to the code.
Was trying to call orders made by a particular user
from my database but get error from my controller reporting from controller..
Public function getYourOrders {
$order = Order::where('user_id','=',Auth::user()->id)->get();
return View::make('orders.show')->with('order',$order);
}
This is where the errorexception is reporting from
If you don't have a logged in user, Auth::user()->id would give you that error.
If you work with framework version 4.1.26+ don't use Auth::user()->id to retrieve user's id.
Instead use id method:
Auth::id();
it will take care of returning null if there's no logged in user and it will not execute unnecessary DB query (when using DB driver)
