DOCKER_BUILDKIT for Docker for Windows? - windows

We are trying to access some of the experimental features of Docker with DOCKER_BUILDKIT. We see that this works fine on Mac and Linux, just not Windows. Any idea how to get this to work on Windows?

The ability to build Windows images is a known limitation of buildkit. You can subscribe to and add your vote to this issues on the roadmap if you are interested in the feature:

Otherwise, for building Linux images, buildkit should work the same on Docker for Windows as it does on other environments, with either the DOCKER_BUILDKIT=1 environment variable for the feature flag set in the daemon.json file (configurable from the Docker preferences UI):

Note that the environment variable overrides the feature flag on the engine. You can also use buildx which is another method to access buildkit. This has the same limitations as accessing buildkit directly (mainly you cannot build Windows images).

It works for me using Docker Desktop for Windows
Try to add the following to your daemon.json:
"features": { "buildkit": true }

I use docker within powershell and this worked for me:

# for docker-compose build ... (additional!)
$env:COMPOSE_DOCKER_CLI_BUILD = 1
This worked for me without any changes in the settings (as described in some other answers).

I know it is pretty late for answer but....
better late then never.
First of all, in docker desktop, go to settings >> docker engine and make sure you have everything set as shown below

"buildkit": true } is set to true by default i believe.
But mark that debug is set to true, while by default it is set to false.
So you will probably have to change it.
And second of all. The most obvious thing that is realy hard to find in documentation.
Unlike on ubuntu, you DO NOT actualy add DOCKER_BUILDKIT=1 at the start of your build instruction.
Personaly, it was extremaly confusing for me, because im so used to adding this phrase from Linux systems. But in Windows, if you enable the options as shown above, buildkit option will always trigger by default.

How can I configure the 'staticcheck' linter in Visual Studio Code?

I installed staticcheck, but it doesn't tell me any problems in my Visual Studio Code.
I configured my linter to use staticcheck and I looked everywhere on the Internet. It still doesn't work.

I already tried to add "-check=all" on the go.lintFlags. I reloaded my Visual Studio Code, but it still doesn't work.
When I checked the official website they talk about staticcheck.conf, but I don't get it since there are multiple files named staticcheck.conf on my system.
You don't need "go.lintTool": "staticcheck", because, this is (staticcheck) default linting tool in vscode-go.
If you have language serve enabled, you need to turn staticcheck explicitly with
"gopls": { "ui.diagnostic.staticcheck": true }.
As alternative, you can set up golangci-lint as your linter and turn staticcheck in it.

How to Change Visual Studio Code Terminal Default Permanently [duplicate]

When I woke up this morning and launched VSCode my default terminal on launch, and when running tasks is now powershell, instead of Git Bash. I am on windows. I have tried changing the settings.json to no avail. Is there something I'm missing?

Update: Version v1.60.0 had a bug. Upgrade to v1.60.1 or higher for a fix.
The bug manifested in the following symptoms:
The Open in Integrated Terminal shortcut-menu command in the Explorer pane's shortcut always uses the built-in default shell (PowerShell on Windows), ignoring the configured one.
The same goes for running tasks (with or without a separate terminal.integrated.automationShell.* setting).
Also, if a given folder or workspace happened to have an integrated terminal open when quitting Visual Studio Code, the shell that is launched when the integrated terminal automatically reopens the next time is again the built-in default shell, not the configured one. By contrast, if reopening doesn't auto-open the integrated terminal, opening it manually does respect the configured default shell, and so does manually creating another shell instance later.

The following information turned out to be unrelated to the bug, but is hopefully still useful general information about Visual Studio Code's recent change in how shells for the integrated terminal are configured:
Migrating from the legacy default shell settings to shell profiles:
Recently, the "terminal.integrated.shell.*" and "terminal.integrated.shellArgs.*" settings were deprecated and replaced with a more flexible model that allows defining multiple shells to select from, via so-called shell profiles, optionally defined in setting "terminal.integrated.profiles.*", with an associated mandatory "terminal.integrated.defaultProfile.*" setting referencing the name of the profile to use by default - which may be an explicitly defined custom profile or one of the built-in, platform-appropriate default profiles.
Note: * in the setting names above represents the appropriate platform identifier, namely windows, linux, or osx (macOS).
As of v1.60.1, if legacy "terminal.integrated.shell.*" settings are also present, the new settings take precedence (even though the tooltip when editing "terminal.integrated.shell.*" in settings.json suggests that this change is yet to come).
In the absence of both settings, Visual Studio Code's built-in default shell is used, which on Windows is PowerShell,[1] and on Unix-like platforms the user's default shell, as specified in the SHELL environment variable.
Recent Visual Studio Code versions, starting before v1.60 - seemingly as one-time opportunity - displayed a prompt offering to migrate the deprecated settings to the new ones.
Accepting the migration results in the following:
Creation of setting "terminal.integrated.shell.*" containing a custom shell profile derived from the values of legacy settings "terminal.integrated.shell.*" and, if present, "terminal.integrated.shellArgs.*"; that custom profile's name has the suffix (migrated)

If you decline the migration, you can later effectively perform it by re-choosing the default shell, as described below.
Note: The new "terminal.integrated.defaultProfile.*" setting that is created in the process then effectively overrides the legacy "terminal.integrated.shell.*" and "terminal.integrated.shellArgs.*" settings, but the latter won't be removed automatically. To avoid confusion, it's best to remove them from settings.json manually.
Choose the default shell profile to use in order to (re)specify the default shell:
Click on the down-arrow part of the shell-selector icon () on the right side of the integrated terminal, select Select Default Profile, which presents a list of the defined profiles to select the default from - in the absence of explicitly defined profiles, standard profiles are offered (see below).
This translates into a terminal.integrated.defaultProfile.* setting in settings.json, whose value is the name of the chosen shell profile - which may be the name of a built-in profile or one of the ones explicitly defined in "terminal.integrated.profiles.*"
Note: This shell is by default also used for tasks (defined in tasks.json), but that can be overridden with a "terminal.integrated.automationShell.*" setting pointing to the executable of an alternative shell.
Optionally, in your settings.json file, you may create a platform-appropriate terminal.integrated.profiles.* setting with shell profiles of interest:
Note: Even if your settings.json contains no (platform-appropriate) "terminal.integrated.profiles.*" setting, Visual Studio code has built-in standard profiles it knows of and offers them for selection when choosing the default shell.
These standard profiles are a mix of shells that come with the host platform as well as some that Visual Studio detects dynamically on a given system, such as Git Bash on Windows.

Disable automatic updates

Add "update.mode": "none" to your settings.
Install older version
Afterwards you can just overwrite current version with the installation of downloaded version.
Note: Wait for next version to fix it, so remember you had automatic update disabled!

increase barrier for available profiles to be ready
Wait up to 20 seconds for profiles to be ready so it's assured that we know the actual default terminal before launching the first terminal.
This isn't expected to ever take this long.
For VSCode with synchronized user settings, the profile might take more time than expected to fully load, hence the advantage of that workaround.
Simply replaced the CMD by Git Bash :-) in the settings.json

Not able to change default download directory for chrome with selenium hub docker and ruby watir

After a few days of searching and experimenting with any of the solutions I could find online, I give up and want to get some help from the community.
Ruby gems (ruby 2.5.1):

Our set-up is:
Run a selenium/hub and a selenium/node-chrome-debug. Something that might be different is that we are mounting the /tmp of the base OS as /hosttmp/tmp in the node container
Make the selenium/node-chrome-debug talk to selenium/hub
Make the browser automation talk to the selenium/hub using the code provided above
The problem is that I was never able to set the default download directory. However, all other parts are working correctly. The VNC window shows the browser is working correctly despite the default download directory settings. It is always /home/seluser/Downloads
Things I have tried:
Other people's ideas such as different ways to specify the options and preferences. (e.g. using the Capabilities)
Docker security-related settings such as: --privileged --security-opt apparmor:unconfined --cap-add SYS_ADMIN
On the base OS, chmod 777 for the download_directory. The download_directory, for example, /tmp/tmp.123 on the base OS, which is mounted as /hosttmp/tmp/tmp.123 in the chrome node container, I could see it and make a few read/write operations in this folder inside the container or on the base OS
Tweaks about the interesting ruby symbol/string stuff when creating a Hash object.
Does anyone have more ideas about what could lead to this situation? What else I could try? And is there any log that I could refer to. There is no error or warning when running the code. Thanks in advance.
I'm using Java+Docker+Selenium+Chrome for automation test and also met similar issue with you. Please find my solutions below and try if it works for your case.
Don't set default download directory in the options, just leave "/home/seluser/Downloads" as it is.
When you start up the chrome node on docker, please add the parameter of volume that could transfer the downloaded files to the directory you want.
e.g. docker run -d -p 5900:5900 --link myhub:hub -v :/home/seluser/Downloads selenium/node-chrome-debug:3.14.0
In my case, the JDK environment and my test script is on Linux machine while the selenium webdriver & browser are all on docker, so once the file downloaded by browser it cannot saved directly on Linux machine, you have to mount the local directory with default directory on docker. Then you could find the file saved in the directory you want.

Did you define options = Selenium::WebDriver::Chrome::Options.new?
We use
options = Selenium::WebDriver::Chrome::Options.new
prefs = {
prompt_for_download: false,
default_directory: download_directory
}
options.add_preference(download: prefs)
and then you would want something like
browser = Watir::Browser.new(:chrome, url: selenium_hub_url, options: options)
But maybe the main problem is just that you are using
options: {prefs: prefs}
instead of
options: {download: prefs}
Okay, by digging into the source code of the Watir and Selenium-Webdriver, I think I know the 'root cause'.
I have created an issue since I am not sure if this is a bug or a 'feature' The issue
Also, I have a workaround for my case, in watir/capabilities.rb:
Change
#selenium_browser = browser == :remote || options[:url] ? :remote : browser
to
#selenium_browser = browser == :remote ? :remote : browser
This shouldn't be the final solution as it might not be a good idea. Will wait for what the Watir people say about this.

How to set vscode format golang code on save?

I'm using vscode with Go extensions to edit golang source code. Each time I want to format code, I have to press Ctrl-Shift-i on linux, Shift-Alt-F on Windows, or Ctrl-Shift-p and type format. Is it possible to set format on save, that is, when I press ctrl-s, it format the code automatically using go.fmt (or something alike)?
From my visual code version, i cannot use config go.formatOnSave": false.
Then I can turn them off in settings as below:
Build (Turn off using go.buildOnSave setting)
Lint (Turn off using go.lintOnSave setting)
Vet (Turn off using go.vetOnSave setting)
Format (Turn off by adding the below in your settings):

You should install this plugin: https://github.com/golang/vscode-go. One of the options is to set "auto format" on save: go.formatOnSave": false. It uses the Golang tooling for formatting.
For me, none of the answers worked. My Go version is 1.17.1, VSCode version is 1.60.1 and I'm using Linux Pop!_os.

Note: You need to install the required extensions for the go lang in VS code. Check the bottom left bar after opening a *.go file and you should see the go version. If you see an exclamation icon click on it and install the suggested extensions.
For me the followed settings worked. I disabled the annoying import refactoring.
