Parse dynamic String input into LINQ query - linq

I need to build the query tree from the user input.
The query from the UI shall be like below and it will be dynamic.
for example:
(
(
(subject in ("facebook", "glassdoor"))
AND (date > "2020-01-01" AND date < "2020-05-31")
)
OR (from == "mike")
OR ((attachment == "pdf") OR ((attachment == "xls*"))
)
Need to convert this string into LINQ query.
If there is any other better approach there, please let me know.

How to create a dynamic where clause using a name value collection?

I have column search filter values sent to my web api and I can't figure how to make the where clause dynamic?
Look below (too much code)!!
Name Value Collection:
public DataTablePager<AccountDTO> Get([FromUri] DataTableParameter param)
{
NameValueCollection nvc = HttpUtility.ParseQueryString(Request.RequestUri.Query);
Casting the search values:
if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(nvc["sSearch_0"]) && !int.TryParse(nvc["sSearch_0"], out tmpInt) ||
!String.IsNullOrEmpty(nvc["sSearch_1"]) && !int.TryParse(nvc["sSearch_1"], out tmpInt) ||
!String.IsNullOrEmpty(nvc["sSearch_10"]) && !int.TryParse(nvc["sSearch_10"], out tmpInt)
Setup Where Clause:
filteredresults = filteredresults.Where(i => CorrectNumericTypes
&& (Lead_ID == null || i.Lead_ID == Lead_ID)
&& (Account_ID == null || i.Account_ID == Account_ID)
This is a classic case for the Pipes and Filters Architectural pattern.
You can construct a list of filters based on dynamic (runtime) conditions. Or keep a static list of filters, the ones where there is no criteria, the data just passes through. Apply this list of filters on the data set or the Query.
I don't think you can achieve that with LINQ. You can design a query builder (using the same Filters pattern)
Here's what I needed (predicate): http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/UploadFile/c42694/dynamic-query-in-linq-using-predicate-builder/

Linq DateTime comparison not working

I have the following code:
DateTime timeStamp = Convert.ToDateTime(Request.QueryString["TimeStamp"]);
var result = (from rs in db.VRec
where
rs.TimeStamp == timeStamp &&
rs.Fixure == wFixture
select rs).ToList();
The result shows 0 even though the correct timeStamp is passed.
If I remove the part where I do the TimeStamp comparison:
rs.TimeStamp == timeStamp
The code works fine.
Any idea on why the datetime comparison may not be working?
DateTime has a pretty fine resolution - likely you are comparing timestamps that only differ in milliseconds, which will fail. You probably want something like:
DateTime now = DateTime.Now;
DateTime then = now.Add(TimeSpan.FromMilliseconds(1));
const int EPSILON_MS = 10;
if(now.Subtract(then).TotalMilliseconds < EPSILON_MS)
{
Console.WriteLine("More or less equal!");
}
Linq converts DateTime arguments to DateTime2 in the sql query executed.
That is, when you do the comparison the actual sql executed will compare a DateTime to a DateTime2. This comparison will "cast" the DateTime to a DateTime2 and the millisecond part will be expanded to a greater resolution (in an odd way in my opinion, please enlighten me).
Try to execute the following sql:
declare #d1 datetime = '2016-08-24 06:53:01.383'
declare #d2 datetime2 = '2016-08-24 06:53:01.383'
declare #d3 datetime2 = #d1
select #d1 as 'd1', #d2 'd2', #d3 'converted'
select (case when (#d1 = #d2) then 'True' else 'False' end) as 'Equal',
(case when (#d1 > #d2) then 'True' else 'False' end) as 'd1 greatest'
From the question, I do not know if you want to compare the date with time or only the date part. If you only want to compare date then following would work
var result = (from rs in db.VRec
where
rs.TimeStamp.Date == timeStamp.Date &&
rs.Fixure == wFixture
select rs).ToList();
Since you are using some reference to db, it gives me a feeling that you are fetching your records from database (which ORM you are using is not obvious from the question or tags). Assuming that you are using Entity framework the above query will fail with exception that .Date has no direct translation to sql. If so you can rewrite the query as following to make it work.
var result = (from rs in db.VRec
where
rs.TimeStamp.Day == timeStamp.Day &&
rs.TimeStamp.Month == timeStamp.Month &&
rs.TimeStamp.Year == timeStamp.Year &&
rs.Fixure == wFixture
select rs).ToList();
The benefit of this approach is that you can compare properties to arbitrary deep level i.e you can compare Hours, Minutes,Seconds etc. in your query. The second query is tested in Entity framework 5.

Linq Where Clause Change based on Parameters

I have a linq statement that returns a list of records based on where clause
This where clause checks for two parameter values.
Out of which one parameter is optional.
so i need a suggestions if i can switch my where clause based on the optional Parameter
something like this
if(locid==0)
{
where (p.CustomerID == custid)
}
else{
where (p.CustomerID == custid) & (p.LocationID == locid )
}
can any one help me how can i get this work.
thanks
You could try writing it like this:
where (p.CustomerID == custid) && (locid == 0 || p.LocationID == locid )
Yes - queries can be composed (although you don't need this for this particular case as #rsbarro pointed out):
var query = p;
if(locid==0)
query = query.Where( p =>p.CustomerID == custid);
else
query = query.Where( p =>p.CustomerID == custid & p.LocationID == locid);
//any other conditions
As BrokenGlass mentioned, you should use composition:
IQueryable<Foo> query = unfiltered.Where(p => p.CustomerID == custId);
if (locid != 0)
{
query = query.Where(p => p.LocationID == locid);
}
Note that the query is not executed until you start reading data from it, so you needn't worry about this making multiple requests.
It looks like in your original post you were trying to use query syntax piecemeal - that won't work, but the "dot notation" is pretty simple here. You can always create your initial query using a query expression if you want - again, that query won't be executed immediately anyway.

In Operator in Linq

I tried to use the suggestion provided here for using In operator in linq but, i am not able to convert my requirement into LINQ statement.
Below is the SQL query which i need to convert to Linq
select *
from navigator_user_field_property
where user_id = 'albert'
and field_id in (
select field_id
from navigator_entity_field_master
where entity_id = 1
and use_type = 0)
order by field_id
I want this to be converted to a Efficient Linq.
Most of the answers deal with the predetermined list of string array which is not working in my case.
Thanks
Looks like a join to me:
var query = from navigator in db.NavigatorUserFieldProperties
where navigator.UserId == "albert"
join field in db.NavigatorEntityFieldMasters
.Where(f => f.EntityId == 1 && f.UseType == 0)
on navigator.FieldId equals field.FieldId
select navigator;
Note that this will return the same value multiple times if there are multiple fields with the same ID - but I suspect that's not the case.
You could do a more literal translation like this:
var query = from navigator in db.NavigatorUserFieldProperties
where navigator.UserId == "albert" &&
db.NavigatorEntityFieldMasters
.Where(f => f.EntityId == 1 && f.UseType == 0)
.select(f => f.FieldId)
.Contains(navigator.FieldId)
select navigator;
... and that may end up translating to the same SQL... but I'd personally go with the join.
Here is an efficient and readable LINQ query:
var fields =
from field in db.navigator_entity_field_masters
where field.entity_id == 1 && field.user_type == 0
select field;
var properties =
from property in db.navigator_user_field_properties
where property.user_id == "albert"
where fields.Contains(property.field)
select property;
Look mama!! Without joins ;-)

LINQ to dataset: CopyToDataTable()

I want to query a datatable (dt) and load a 2nd dt with the resultant collection of datarows. Fine - we have the CopyToDataTable() extn mthd for exactly that purpose. However it is constrained to enumerate only over DataRows, which means that I cannot return anything else e.g. a collection of anonymous types. So - how can I modify the values in the datarows?
Eg I have a dt with 3 columns: MyPK, VARCHAR01, VARCHAR02.
Foreach row, if VARCHAR01 or VARCHAR02 has the value "" (i.e. String.Empty) I want to replace that with NULL (which the underlying type allows).
I would do this as follows:
var MyCleanedDatarows =
from o in ds.Tables["dt"].AsEnumerable()
select new {
MyPK = o.Field<string>("MyPK"),
VARCHAR01 = (o.Field<string?>("VARCHAR01") == "" ? NULL : o.Field<string?>("VARCHAR01") ),
VARCHAR02 = (o.Field<string?>("VARCHAR02") == "" ? NULL : o.Field<string?>("VARCHAR02") )
};
...but then I cant use CopyToDataTable() to get back to a dt. I'm thinking I need to modify the datarows before invoking select operator, but I dont know how to achieve that. Any help/thoughts would be v.greatfully recieved.
Thanks in advance,
Tamim.
Take a look at this approach, in MSDN documentation.
