Get value from JSON with grep - bash

I have this line to read a value from a JSON string
ID=$(echo $ACCOUNT_REQ | grep -Po '"id": *\K"[^"]*"')
TYPE=$(echo $ACCOUNT_REQ | grep -Po '"type": *\K"[^"]*"')
The problem is that from time to time I get too much information read out.
id: ".........." instead of .......... (I get the double quotes too)
type: "NATIVE",
"zoneTransferWhitelist" (I get the next part zoneTrans... too)
My shorted json

"type":"NATIVE",

How do I make it so that I only get the value between the quotation marks?

Not very elegant but you this works with your example and will get any single-line value from the json:
get_value() {
echo "$1" | grep "\"$2\":" | sed "s/.*$2\":\"\(.*\)\",/\1/"
}
Then you can run:
get_value "$ACCOUNT_REQ" id
get_value "$ACCOUNT_REQ" type
The quotes around $ACCOUNT_REQ are important for keeping it split across multiple lines (assuming your initial json is multi-line like you've pasted above).

jq How to pass key starting with numeral as argument [duplicate]

I am new to jq and facing an issue while parsing my json
I have a json stored in a variable like this
temp='{ "1": { "my_name": "one" }, "2": { "my_name": "two" } }'
Now I need to get the value of my_name for both other entries
I have tried something like this
echo $temp | jq '.1' //out put 0.1
I was assuming to get { "my_name": "one" }
And similarly to get my_name value I did
echo $temp | jq '.1.my_name' // Its output is giving me error
Can any one please help to identify what is wrong with my syntax and how can I correct it.
Just the number gets interpreted as a float. You need to use it in a context where it is unambiguously a key string.
echo "$temp" | jq '.["1"]["my_name"]'
and
echo "$temp" | jq '.["1"]'
to get the containing dict.
With a sufficiently new jq (I think >= 1.4) you can also say
echo "$temp" | jq '."1".my_name'
Whenever you are trying to reference a key that is not a valid identifier, you have to quote it. See the manual for more details.
To select the item under the key 1, you'd do this:
."1"
For your other question on how to obtain the my_name values, you could do this:
to_entries | map(.value.my_name)

conditional grep from a Json file

i have a query with this Json and grep :-

How can one extract name from this json where id matches say 1234 , can be random , using grep or sed?
I would suggest to use jq but if you want to use grep try
grep -B1 'id.*1234' < input_file | grep name
from man page
-B num, --before-context=num
Print num lines of leading context before each match. See also the -A and -C options.

jq -r '.[]|select(.id==1234).name' file
.[] - iterates the array elements
select(.id==1234) - filters element with desired id
.name - extracts name
The option -r causes the name to be written unquoted.

Extract json value on regex on bash script

How can i get the values inner depends in bash script?

The major problem is linebreak, i have already tried | grep depends but i can not get the sale_timesheet value.
Im trying to add this values comming from files into a var, like:

You can get the desired result using jq like this:
jq -r '.depends | join(" ")' YOURFILE.json
This uses .depends to extract the value from the depends field, pipes it to join(" ") to join the array with a single space in between, and uses -r for raw (unquoted) output.
If it is not a json file and only string then you can use below Regex to find the values. If it's json file then you can use other methods like Thomas suggested.

As #Thomas has pointed out in a comment, the OPs input data is not in JSON format:

One (quite verbose) awk solution based on the input looking exactly like what's in the question:

How to extract text between two patterns with sed/awk

I know this has been asked 1000 times here, but I read a lot of similar questions and still did not manage to find the right way to do this. I need to extract a number from a line that looks like this:
{"version":"4.9.123M","info":{"version":[2034.2],"description":""},"status":"OK"}
Expected output:
2034.2
This version number will not always be the same, but the rest of the line should.
I have tried working with sed but I am new to this and failed:
sed -e 's/version":[\(.*\),"description/\1/'
output:
sed: -e expression #1, char 35: unterminated `s' command
I think the issue is that there are too many special characters involved in the line and I did not write the command very well.
Since it's JSON, use should use JSON aware tools for processing it. If you prefer, for example, awk, the way is to use GNU awk's JSON extension. This is a small how-to.
First download and compile appropriate versions of GNU awk, Gawkextlib and gawk-json. That's pretty straightforward, actually, just ./configure and make. Then, write some code:

The JSON file structure can vary from one line to multiple lines, for example:
{"version":"4.9.123M","info":{"version":[2034.2],"description":""},"status":"OK"}
or:

}
so we need to buffer the JSON lines with lines=lines $0 until there is a whole valid object in variable lines. We use the extension function json_fromJSON() to determine that validity in if(json_fromJSON(lines,data)==1). While validated the object gets disentangled and stored to array data. For this particular object the structure of the array is:
data["version"]="4.9.123M"
data["info"]["version"][1]="2034.2"
data["info"]["description"]=""
data["status"]="OK"
We could examine the object and produce some output of it with this recursive array scanning function:

If the version is always enclosed in [] and no other [ or ] is present in a line ,you can try this logic

Try grep when want to extract simple texts
echo "{"version":"4.9.123M","info":{"version":[2034.2],"description":""},"status":"OK"}"| grep -o "\[.*\]" | sed -e 's/\[\|\]//g'
This should do:
STR='{"version":"4.9.123M","info":{"version":[2034.2],"description":""},"status":"OK"}'
echo "$STR" | awk -F'[][]' '{print $2}'
2034.2

Convert quoted string list to specific format

I'm using jq to read some data from a JSON file.
after=`cat somefile.json | jq '.after[]'`
returns something like this:
"some value" "another value" "something else"
Basically a list of quoted strings. I now need to convert these strings into one string formatted like
"some value; another value; something else;"
I've tried a lot of combinations of for loops to try and get this working and nothing quite works.
Anyone know how this can be done? Cheers!
use sed:
sed -e 's/" /; /g; s/ "/ /g; s/"$/;"/' <<< '"some value" "another value" "something else"'
OUTPUT:
"some value; another value; something else;"
use sed s command for replacing the desire value
Thanks all! I actually decided to dig deeper into the jq docs to see if I could simply leverage it to do what I want.
after=`cat somefile.json | jq -c -r '.after[] + "; "'` | tr -d '\n'
This ended up working very well. Thanks for the sed version though! Always good to see another working solution.
Assuming .after[] returns the list of strings you describe, you can do this entirely with jq using join to format them as follows:
[ .after[] ] | join("; ") + ";"
