Why does Atom always unselect the regex option in the find-and-replace menu? I know I can use a shortcut to re-enable it but it only seems to stick for the current session. If I close and then reopen Atom, the find-and-replace menu once again defaults to having regex unselected. Who are these coders who don't search using regex?!? I assume there's an undocumented setting I can use in config.json but I didn't see anything in the GUI settings.
It will always start that way. What I do is to assign easy shortcuts that only apply in the search editor. This is in my .atom/keymap.cson (open by wenu, edit, keymap, or select "Application: Open your keymap" from the command palette:
'.platform-linux .find-and-replace':
'ctrl-/': 'find-and-replace:toggle-regex-option'
'ctrl-*': 'find-and-replace:toggle-selection-option'
'ctrl--': 'find-and-replace:toggle-case-option'
'ctrl-+': 'find-and-replace:toggle-whole-word-option'
Well after I accepted #netizen's answer I did some research and looked at the atom/find-and-replace package itself and specifically it's settings file: https://github.com/atom/find-and-replace/blob/master/lib/find-options.coffee
There's a setting find-and-replace.useRegex noted there which seemed to be a boolean, so I modified my Atom config.cson (Command Palette or Settings > Open Your Config > edit config.cson) like so:
"*":
"find-and-replace":
useRegex: true
This had the desired effect—regex is turned on by default when I use find/replace now. Note that, since find-and-replace is an additional package, settings changes to it don't go under "core" in your config.cson.
There are other boolean settings for caseSensitive, wholeWord, and inCurrentSelection, too.

By default, pressing Esc in TextMate cycles through possible completions (in addition to closing dialog boxes), which can put unwanted characters in your document, especially if you are used to Esc being a safe key to hit in most text editors. (In fact, in a lot of IDEs, pressing Esc a lot is necessary to close auto-completion popups so the up and down arrow keys work.)
How do I disable this behavior, so in normal text editing, the Esc key does nothing, but closing dialogs still works as expected?
What works
Based on a comment from #matt I found that I can do what I need by overriding the default key binding, as mentioned here, https://manual.macromates.com/en/key_bindings.html :
In addition TextMate has a /path/to/TextMate.app/Contents/Resources/KeyBindings.dict file with some extra key bindings which are specific to TextMate (and thus not appropriate to put in the per user global key bindings file). You can copy this file to ~/Library/Application Support/TextMate and edit it, this will then take precedence over the bundled file.
I edited the file and took out the line with nextCompletion, assigned to shift+Esc ($\033) and assigned both Esc and shift+Esc to call noop
"\033" = "noop:";
"$\033" = "noop:";
I learned about the existence of the noop selector here:
https://github.com/textmate/textmate/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=noop
After quitting and relaunching TextMate Esc now does nothing except close dialogs.
(Apparently to change this one setting, you need to know Objective-C to recognize selector strings, (and assembly which has 'nop') so you can guess that there should be a noop selector. And you need to know octal, so you recognize the Escape key as 033 = 27.)
Things I tried that failed
EDIT: for reference for people wondering how it can take 90 minutes to change one little setting.
I found this paragraph in the manual, at the end of section 4.2:
When you provide your own completion command (or list) you may want to
disable the default matches. This can be done by setting
disableDefaultCompletion to 1.
I tried setting disableDefaultCompletion to 1 in the Preferences > Variables pane and quitting and reopening the app. I found that Bundle menu > Select Bundle Item and clicking Settings shows a list of all the settings, including my disableDefaultCompletion = 1 at the bottom. Apparently this doesn't do anything? (Other settings overridden by different bundles show as crossed out, which my settings is not.)
I also searched the http://github.com/textmate/textmate repo for the string disableDefaultCompletion and it shows in the search results, so this is feature should exist there somewhere.
I tried quitting the app and then on the commandline:
defaults write com.macromates.TextMate disableDefaultCompletion true
Relaunching and trying again (hitting Esc to the right of a close } in JavaScript mode) and it is still not disabling completion.
is there any way to set word-wrap for all new/existing files should be in word-wrapping.
i need to set by default all the file in word-wrapping like notepadd++.
Thanks in advance.
Settings/Preferences | Editor | General | Use soft wraps in editor -- this setting affects all files.
You can disable or enable this option on per file basis (until it's closed) via View | Active Editor | Use Soft Wraps
More recent version (compared to the versions available when this question was answered) also have these options available in the Editor's gutter menu (right click in the area where the line numbers/breakpoints/etc are).
P.S.
Settings screen has very nice feature -- quick search box (top left corner) -- it does wonders. It allows you to quickly narrow the search scope of the specific setting by it's name (keyword).
You can also use "Search anywhere" (Shift two times) as well as "Find Action" (Help | Find Action... Ctrl + Shift + A) to search for individual settings.
Webstorm 9.0.3 Evaluation version on Windows 7:
I know I'm a bit late coming here, but if like me, you find that there's no "Use soft wraps in editor" option when you look in Settings>Editor>, i just discovered you can apply 'soft wrap' to individual files:
Open the file,
Left click the left margin (where the line numbers are),
You'll see "Use Soft Wraps" as an option you can turn on.
It's not quite what I wanted (change settings to apply to all files), but it's something.
Yes, it is possible. I have webstorm 2016. Follow these step.
Step 1:
This step may vary depending on OS used. Just search for preferences. I have screenshot for Mac.
Step 2:
Click on Editor twice. Note that arrow will change to downward position as shown.
Step 3 :
Click on general and see the option Use soft wraps in editor.
Step 4:
Select it and click ok
Settings (Preferences on Mac) | Editor | General | Use soft wraps in editor
Although its an old thread but updating as someone may find it usefull. In version 9.0.1, you have to select General inside Editor and then Use soft wraps in editor
Settings(ctrl+alt+s)--->Editor--->general--->use soft wrap in editor
Recently switched to Textmate on Mac for coding. On PC when ever I want to tab in or out a block of code I just highlight and press tab or shift+tab to move it in our out. It's very useful when you are adding an extra loop or conditional statement to a block of code to keep everything tidy and neatly indented.
On Textmate however when I try this it just replaces my selected text with a tab. So is there a way to do tab and de-tab lines of code in textmate?
Indent: Alt+Tab
Un-Indent: Shift+Alt+Tab
the hotkey is command-left bracket to move left and command-right bracket to move right
(the buttons next to 'p')
heres a link to more hotkeys and such
http://projects.serenity.de/textmate/tutorials/basics/
You can use Shift+Tab to decrease indent; You just need to make and assign a macro. You can reuse this technique to accomplish a great many things.
Enter some text, and intend them, this is mostly for feedback.
Click the Record Macro Button
Use ⇧+⌥+⇥ (aka; Shift + Option + Tab) to decrease the indentation.
Click the record button to stop recording the macro.
Use the Edit menu or ⌃+⌘+M to save your macro;
Saving will prompt you to create a new bundle*, or add your macro to an existing bundle.
Add a Key Equivalent by clicking in the field and pressing ⇧+⇥
Your bundle-macro should look like the one below, simply Save and you're done! TextMate will now decrease indent on ⇧+⇥
*: (as noted by u/PatrickT) Sadly the create new bundle functionality has not yet been implemented, and you must choose to add to an existing bundle. You can still create a bundle via Bundles -> Edit Bundles then Command + N.
As an alternative, you can change the keybindings, see Link
Here is what I did:
Install Link
Go to File -> Open -> User Key Bindings, this will create/edit ~/Libary/KeyBindings/DefaultKeyBinding.dict
Add a binding, for the action enter shiftRight: (indent) manually (this is a TextMate specific action and not in the pre-populated actions list)
Choose a shortcut, I used cmd+alt+right
Do the same for the action shiftLeft: (un-indent, I used cmd+alt+left)
Save and then restart TextMate
I used a shortcut with arrow keys as my right hand is already on the arrow keys when I am selecting multiple lines, so this is a good fit.
The reason why I did it was because I have a german keyboard and alt+tab/alt+shift+tab don't work for me since I am using Witch for app-switching using these exact shortcuts.
EDIT: cmd+alt+left/right don't work when you have multiple tabs open, as they are used for navigate to next or previous tab in TextMate... seems this cannot be changed or overridden (I tried Setting Shortcut Keys in Textmate). Looking for an alternative shortcut now.
Noob xcoder here and for some reason i cannot get the text macros to expand within xcode. For example if i type ifelse and then hit ^. it doesnt automatically expand the macro?? Likewise if i type fo and then ^. it will complete it to either for, fori etc, and will also pop up those options if i hit escape however i cannot get it to expand the macros unless i am misunderstanding how this works?
Make sure the shortcut for menu item Edit->Next Completion is indeed ^. If it is not, go to Xcode preferences, Key Bindings and edit it.
Try rebuilding your code sense index from the Project Info panel.
I'm using Notepad++ as an editor to write programs in Python. It might sound daft but I looked around in the editor and could not find any means (not the manual way but something like in Emacs) to do a block comment in my code.
Since so many language settings are supported in Notepad++, I'm curious to find a way to block comment code.
CTRL+Q Block comment/uncomment.
See Keyboard And Mouse Shortcuts - Notepad++ Wiki.
Try the following shortcut:
Ctrl+K.
This link was exactly what I was searching for .
Let me summarize the answers for others' benefit (for python and notepad++)
1) Ctrl+K on multiple lines (i.e. selected region) allows you to block comment.
Also note that pressing the combination multiple times allows you to add multiple "#"s (sometimes I use that while testing to differentiate from other comments)
2) Ctrl+Shift+K (on the commented region) allows you to perform block uncomment
3) Ctrl+Shift+K on an uncommented selected region does not comment it
4) Ctrl+Q allows you to block comment/uncomment in a toggled mode (meaning, you cannot add multiple '#'s like in 1) )
Hope this helps another wandering soul.
Question - how would you develop a hack of keyboard combinations to comment/uncomment if there were no shortcuts? Just curious. I've no clue hence asking.
Yes in Notepad++ you can do that!
Some hotkeys regarding comments:
Ctrl+Q Toggle block comment
Ctrl+K Block comment
Ctrl+Shift+K Block uncomment
Ctrl+Shift+Q Stream comment
Source: shortcutworld.com from the Comment / uncomment section.
On the link you will find many other useful shortcuts too.
for .sql files Ctrl+K or Ctrl+Q does not work.
to insert comments in .sql files in Notepad++ try Ctrl+Shift+Q
(there is no shortcut to uncomment the code block though. I have tried that on v5.8.2 )
Use shortcut: Ctrl+Q.
You can customize in Settings
In your n++ editor, you can go to
Setting > Shortcut mapper
and find all shortcut information as well as you can edit them :)
Two ways for block commenting:
Ctrl+Shift+Q
or
Select the block
Alt + Right click
Choose block comment.
Without having selected a language type for your file there are no styles defined. Comment and block comment are language specific style preferences. If that's a PITA...
To select for multi-line editing you can use
shift + alt + down arrow
To add a comment under any code on NOTEPAD++ first we have to save and define the programming or scripting file type. Like, save the file as xml, html etc. Once the file is saved in proper format you will be able to add a comment directly using the shortcut ctrl+Q
Just select the desired line and click on Ctrl + Q
Ps: I am using Notepad++
