I'm using visual 2019, ASP.NET MVC core 2.2.0
My project debug ok, build no error but when I publish it give me an error like this
Detail file in AppData\Local\Temp\tmp76C2.tmp
System.AggregateException: One or more errors occurred. --->
Microsoft.WebTools.Shared.Exceptions.WebToolsException: Build failed.
Check the Output window for more details. --- End of inner
exception stack trace ---
---> (Inner Exception #0) Microsoft.WebTools.Shared.Exceptions.WebToolsException: Build failed.
Check the Output window for more details.<---
Microsoft.WebTools.Shared.Exceptions.WebToolsException: Build failed.
Check the Output window for more details.
How can I fix it?
Check out the output window of visual studio when publishing, read all lines to find any error, then fix it. For example it might be a problem for copying files to publish folder after building. So you won't get any error on build as well.
Look for something like this:
I ran into this error in VS 2019/Core 3.1. In my case, the Publish displayed a bunch of errors with the Bundler, which a regular build didn't show. Eventually found the Web Publish Activity window gave a clue: it shows line numbers for errors it finds, and the first error with the Bundler there was the problem, apparently. Turned out it didn't like an async function in the JS file. I removed that and it published OK.
For me the problem was that I updated de .net core version (2.2 to 5) of my project and forgot to change the .net version target on my publish profile.
Update Microsoft.Net.Compilers package.
I have also encountered this problem when I was going to publish my API.After that, I found my publishing folder does not exist in my local PC.
It could also be due to a problem with the signature in your deployment options. Make sure to select a valid certificate.
I encountered this problem in Visual Studio 2022 when try to publish Blazor project. I tried many things (Clean, Rebuild, clear Nuget Cache etc) but nothing worked. Finally I used this command on the solution folder with Powershell (run as Admin)
dotnet workload install wasm-tools
Then I reopened Visual Studio and publish worked
This may be helpful for someone else.
I got below error while publishing the code.
Microsoft.WebTools.Shared.Exceptions.WebToolsException: Build failed. Check the Output window for more details.
We upgraded .Net core 5.0 to 6.0 (VS 2022) and trying to provide new build to higher environments.
After spending little time around the error in output window and logs (published by Visual Studio) i found publish profile(FolderProfile.pubxml) of our project is targeting to .Net 5.0 where is our project now upgraded to .NET 6.0 hence the publish was unsuccessful.
Modified tag in FolderProfile.pubxml
<TargetFramework>net6.0</TargetFramework>

What to do to solve "The “GetDeploymentPathFromVsixManifest” task failed unexpectedly" when trying to debug a VS extension project??
Same question was already asked multiple times with different source reasons, all for VS2017 usually for upgrading VS extensions from VS2015, and it should have been solved with VS 2019. Yet, it just popped up.
The "GetDeploymentPathFromVsixManifest" task failed unexpectedly.
System.TypeLoadException: Method 'get_JoinableTaskFactory' in type 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Sdk.BuildTasks.ExtensionEngineHost' from assembly 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Sdk.BuildTasks.16.0, Version=16.9.2017.12405, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' does not have an implementation.

I have tried all the solution for the same error found on SO, so far to no avail. I am using VS 2019 Community 16.9.2, updated all packages, downgraded some to try, nothing really changes this error.
This is my first attempt on VSIX and I just downloaded an existing project from github and compiled it.
The github project is working (probably) since the extension is available on the marketplace.
Any other suggestions? Searches on this error in combination with the JoinableTaskFactory dont return exactly many results.
For me the solution was to do at least one of the following steps:
Delete the obj-folder in the project
Execute Reset the Visual Studio 2019 Experimental Instance. You can find this tool when you search it in the windows search bar.
Clean and Rebuild the project
Sometimes it helped if I did only one step and sometimes it only worked after doing all the steps.
I couldn't find out if there is a specific pattern behind, but doing all of the above steps always fixed the error for me.
Another issue where I got the same error was if there was the wrong external program selected under Project Properties -> Debug -> Start external Program. For VS2019 I need to select C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2019\Enterprise\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe
If I switched between Visual Studio Versions, then sometimes a different Visual Studio version was selected.
Uncheck: "Deploy VSIX content to experimental instance for debugging"
in solution properties->VSIX
Also Update installed NuGet packages.
I'm compiling a solution with many projects inside using VS2013's MSBuild. I want the build to stop if one of the projects fails to compile and that the error code of msbuild will be non-zero to indicate something has failed. Can it be done?
I am running this command to start compiling:
%MS_BUILD_PATH% "%workarea%\WindowsSolution.sln" /p:Configuration=Release /p:ContinueOnError=false /p:StopOnFirstFailure=true
but it doesn't work as I want it. Any suggestions?
If anyone is still looking for this feature in Visual Studio, there is a free extension called [VSColorOutput] (here), which has an option to stop the build on first build error. Once you have installed the extension, the options is located at: Tools.Options.VSColorOutput.Build Actions.Stop Build On First Error
The official documentation says StopOnFirstFailure: If true, when one of the projects fails to build, no more projects will be built. Currently this is not supported when building in parallel (with multiple processors).
Can you try setting BuildInParallel=false and see if that helps?
Edit: Found an old blog post that says this might be easy to do if you're building a single .sln with multiple projects http://blogs.msdn.com/b/manishagarwal/archive/2006/05/09/593392.aspx
I'm using StopOnFirstBuildError
https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=EinarEgilsson.StopOnFirstBuildError
It stops the build when the any project building fails. I'm using on 2015. The linked page says it works with Visual Studio 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017.
We are using Visual Studio 2012 and Team Foundation Server 2010 in our project. Since, we are using Microsoft Fakes, we could have not used the started Test functionality of our Team Build 2010, I have created a build activity which invokes VSTest.Console.exe passing the test assemblies. This approach has been working well for us. However, after a recent check-in we are getting the following error when executing Vstest.console.exe
Error: An exception occurred while invoking executor 'executor://mstestadapter/v1': Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
I copied the binary files to my local machine and was able to get the error again. Interestingly, we run a dev build before check-in which runs the same vstest.console.exe with the same parameters and that works correctly. I have got two folders on my machine, for one the call works fine and for other it doesn't. The compiled assemblies look same size and there aren't much differences to suggest.
I tried using Process Monitor but couldn't find anything obvious other than that the process returns with an exit code 1. Does anybody know much about this error? Is there any way I can find out more information from my test run?
Regards,
Hamid
We got to the bottom of the problem. We are using Entity Framework 5.0 and we also have a situation where some of our test assemblies are targeting .Net 4.0 and some are targeting .Net 4.5.
When we are trying to run the tests such that assemblies targeting different versions of .Net framework and using Entity Framework 5.0 are run in the same Test (vstest.console.exe) process, we get this error.
I think this has to do with the way Entity Framework 5.0 ships with two versions (net40 and net45). Once one version of the library is loaded in the process, the other version cannot be loaded and this caused the error.
I had the same error message just now with Visual Studio 2017 using the new MSTest.Framework and MSTest.TestAdapter (to be able to use Live Unit Testing). It turned out I was using multiple versions of those packages in my solution. Consolidating them to the latest version solved the problem.
This is what worked for me:
In Visual Studio, Test -> Test Settings -> Default Processor Architecture -> X64.
Though it might not solve everyone's issue, hope it helps some of you out there.
I have the same error specified in the subject when in the AssemblyInfo of the project is specified the AssemblyAttribute:
[assembly: AssemblyCulture("en")]
If this attribute is present, the run of the unit tests fails.
If I remove this line of code or I remove the en language, the run of the unit tests success.
An exception occurred while invoking executor 'executor://mstestadapter/v2'
I had multiple TestAdapter's and TestFramework's in my BuildAgents Folder, deleting the v1.1.11 versions fixed the issue:
This happened to me recently in VS 2019. Using NuGet to update to the latest versions of MSTest.TestAdapter and MSTest.TestFramework solved the problem for me.
I tried everything on the web to solve this exception. Finally I solved this issue by installing the Update v4 of Visual Studio 2013 (which is that I'm using currently). Hope it helps!
Deleting app.config and packages.config, if exists, and reinstalling Entity framework via nuGet packages works for me.
I recently create a couple of VSPackages for some Visual Studio extensions (menu bar/command). I compiled them correctly yesterday, checked into TFS (i'm the only one touching this project, FYI). I had already installed these extensions and were working fine. Today it doesn't compile! I get the following error:
Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.
This doesn't tell me anything, so i fired up Visual Studio with the following command:
devenv.exe /Rebuild > out.log
In my out.log, I see the following:
C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\VSSDK\Microsoft.VsSDK.targets(420,5): error : Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.
I have been stuck on this for hours and can no longer build these VSPackages. Anyone? This is really frustrating. I have already tried cleaning project/rebuilding/build using Visual Studio itself (not command line)
I've experienced this issue several times in both vs2010 and vs2012, and manually deleting the "bin" and "obj" folders from the project then doing a "rebuild" normally does the trick.
Further to the answer provided by the OP, I will provide it here for completeness instead of relying on the external link remaining live:
Quoted directly from the MSDN forum answer:
Do you happen to have these extensions installed to the AllUsers
location (i.e. %VSInstallDir%\Common7\IDE\Extensions)?
You mentioned in your initial post that "I had already installed these
extensions and were working fine."
The task that's failing (based on the line number in the targets file)
is the UninstallExtension task. The only reason I'm thinking this task
would execute and fail in your situation is if you're building an
extension that's already installed to the Common7\IDE\Extensions
directory.

I find myself on this question because of exactly the same build issue of a VSIX Installer Project for our project templates. This solved my issue.
Indeed, I uninstalled the prior version of our templates and the build occurs without issue.
Have you double checked that all of your projects are using compatible framework versions?
As in you can't use a .Net 4.0 assembly in a .Net 3.5 project.
Is the project linked with source control like TFS? If so then take latest from TFS and try again.
Are you running Visual Studio as Administrator?
Maybe you have insufficient rights for some file (copy/move/delete) especially in bin or obj folders.
I'm working on VS 2005 and something has gone wrong on my machine. Suddenly, out of the blue, I can no longer build deployment files.
The build message is:
ERROR: An error occurred generating a bootstrapper: Invalid syntax.
ERROR: General failure building bootstrapper
ERROR: Unrecoverable build error
A quick Google search brings up the last 2 lines, but nobody in cyberspace has ever reported the first message before. (Hooray! I'm first at SOMETHING on the 'net!)
Other machines in my office are able to do the build.
My machine has been able to do the build before. I have no idea what changed that upset the delicate balance of things on my box.
I have also tried all the traditional rituals i.e. closing Visual Studio, blowing away all the bin and obj folders, rebooting, etc. to no avail.
For simplicity's sake, I created a little "Hello World" app with a deployment file.
Herewith the build output:
------ Build started: Project: HelloWorld, Configuration: Debug Any CPU ------
HelloWorld -> C:\Vault\Multi Client\Tests\HelloWorld\HelloWorld\bin\Debug\HelloWorld.exe
------ Starting pre-build validation for project 'HelloWorldSetup' ------
------ Pre-build validation for project 'HelloWorldSetup' completed ------
------ Build started: Project: HelloWorldSetup, Configuration: Debug ------
Building file 'C:\Vault\Multi Client\Tests\HelloWorld\HelloWorldSetup\Debug\HelloWorldSetup.msi'...
ERROR: An error occurred generating a bootstrapper: Invalid syntax.
ERROR: General failure building bootstrapper
ERROR: Unrecoverable build error
========== Build: 1 succeeded or up-to-date, 1 failed, 0 skipped ==========
I am using:
MS Visual Studio 2005 Version 8.0.50727.762 (SP .050727-7600)
.NET Framework Version 2.0.50727
OS: Windows XP Pro
Again, I have no idea what changed. All I know is that one day everything was working fine; the next day I suddenly can't do any deployment builds at all (though all other projects still compile fine).
I posted this on MSDN about a month ago, and they don't seem to know what's going on, either.
Anyone have any idea what this is about?
#Brad Wilson: Thanks, but if you read my original post, you'll see that I already did start an entire solution from scratch, and that didn't help.
#deemer: I went through all the pain of uninstalling and reinstalling, even though I didn't have your recommended reading while waiting... and - Misery! - still the same error reappears. It seems that my computer has somehow been branded as unsuitable for doing deployment builds ever again.
Does anyone have any idea where this "secret switch" might be?
Disable bootstrapping
In Solution Explorer, select the deployment project.
On the Project menu, click Properties.
In the Property Pages dialog box, expand the Configuration Properties node, and then select the Build property page.
Click the Prerequisites button.
In the Prerequisites dialog box, clear the Create setup program to install prerequisite components check box, and then click OK.
If it doesn't build only on the one machine, then either you've managed to make that machine different, or the VS2005 install is corrupted. If you take the error message at face-value, then the problem is probably the latter. Try running the repair feature of the VS2005 installer, or failing that, reinstall VS2005. Ender's Game is a good book to read while you're waiting :-|.
Unfortunately, that error is the general catch-all error handler for setup projects. As a wild guess, I'd say that maybe the setup project got corrupted somehow, which is causing the "Invalid Syntax" error.
Try creating a new setup project and start by doing things one step at a time, and see if you can reproduce the problem (or, hopefully, avoid it altogether).
SOLUTION!
Thanks to Michael Bleifer of Microsoft support - I installed .NET 2.0 SP1, and the problem was solved!
I had a similar issue (An error occurred generating a bootstrapper: Unable to finish updating resource for [YourAssemblyPath] with error 80070005). This error occurred on subsequent builds of the a setup project (first build after setup project creation always worked for me). It turned out to be related to both my source control client(Sourcegear Vault) and MS Security Essentials. I added Sourcegear's VaultGUIClient.exe as an Excluded Process in Security Essentials.
Win 7 Ult x64
VS2010 Prem SP1
Sourcegear Vault 5.0.4 (18845)
Security Essentials Version: 2.1.1116.0
