The perf-stat command in linux runs until crtl-c is pressed. I am trying to use this command in script to profile a loop. The recommended solution to simulate sending crtl-c is to issue a kill command with -2 or -SIGINT flag.
However this does not work for me. I am on RHEL.
The script more or less looks as follows:
for i in {1..12}
do
pid=$1
perf stat -e dTLB-loads -p $pid > perf.out&
perf_pid=$!
sleep 10
kill -SIGINT $perf_pid
done
Even after the kill the perf process is still active. All the ctrl-c's are executed at the end when the script gets over.
Reading the man page for perf, I came across the --control option which seems is the proper approach to profile a portion of running command.
However, this option is not available on RHEL .
I was able find workaround by using the -INT option for kill mentioned here. For some reason -2 or -SIGINT doesn't work on RHEL.

I have written a bash script to carry out some tests on my system. The tests run in the background and in parallel. The tests can take a long time and sometimes I may wish to abort the tests part way through.
If I Control+C then it aborts the parent script, but leaves the various children running. I wish to make it so that I can hit Control+C or otherwise to quit and then kill all child processes running in the background. I have a bit of code that does the job if I'm running running the background jobs directly from the terminal, but it doesn't work in my script.
I have a minimal working example.
I have tried using trap in combination with pgrep -P $$.

trap 'kill -n 2 $(pgrep -P $$)' 2
sleep 10 &
wait
I was hoping that on hitting control+c (SIGINT) would kill everything that the script started but it actually says:
./breakTest.sh: line 1: kill: (3220) - No such process
This number changes, but doesn't seem to apply to any running processes, so I don't know where it is coming from.
I guess if the contents of the trap command get evaluated where the trap command occurs then it might explain the outcome. The 3220 pid might be for pgrep itself.
I'd appreciate some insight here

I have found a solution using pkill. This example also deals with many child processes.

This appears to kill all the child processes elegantly. Though I don't properly understand what the issue was with my original code, apart from sending the correct signal.
in bash whenever you you use & after a command it places that command as a background job ( this background jobs are called job_spec ) which is incremented by one until you exit that terminal session. You can use the jobs command to get the list of the background jobs running. To work with this jobs you have to use the % with the job id. The jobs command also accept other options such as jobs -p to see the proces sids of all jobs , jobs -p %JOB_SPEC to see the process of id of that particular job.
#!/usr/bin/env bash
trap 'kill -9 %1' 2
sleep 10 &
wait
or
#!/usr/bin/env bash
trap 'kill -9 $(jobs -p %1)' 2
sleep 10 &

Note however that nohup is not reliable. When the invoking user logs out, chances are that nohup also quits immediately. In that case disown works better.

This is probably the simplest form using screen:
screen -S SOMENAME script.sh
Then, if you get disconnected, on reconnection simply run:
screen -r SOMENAME
Ctrl+C should continue to work as expected
Fact 1: When a terminal (xterm for example) gets closed, the shell is supposed to send a SIGHUP ("hangup") to any processes running in it. This harkens back to the days of analog modems, when a program needed to clean up after itself if mom happened to pick up the phone while you were online. The signal could be trapped, so that a special function could do the cleanup (close files, remove temporary junk, etc). The concept of "losing your connection" still exists even though we use sockets and SSH tunnels instead of analog modems. (Concepts don't change; all that changes is the technology we use to implement them.)
Fact 2: The effect of Ctrl-C depends on your terminal settings. Normally, it will send a SIGINT, but you can check by running stty -a in your shell and looking for "intr".
You can use these facts to your advantage, using bash's trap command. For example try running this in a window, then press Ctrl-C and check the contents of /tmp/trapped. Then run it again, close the window, and again check the contents of /tmp/trapped:

For information on signals, you should be able to man signal (FreeBSD or OSX) or man 7 signal (Linux).

So ... to your question. To "survive" disconnection, you want to specify behaviour that will be run when your script traps SIGHUP.
(Bonus question #2: Now do you understand where nohup gets its name?)
I would like to run n processes (in my case simulations) simultaneously, using bash.
Right now this is what I'm running:

Problem is, the loop only progresses to the next iteration after the simulation is done. Any suggestions? Thanks!
You should be able to run your command in the background by adding a & after it.
Should make them run in parallell, although in the background.
(Small side note: the processes will continue to run even if you abort the script, so you might want to add a trap to kill the processes if you hit for eg. ctrl-c when script is running. Look at bash manual.)

For testing purposes I have this shell script
#!/bin/bash
echo $$
find / >/dev/null 2>&1
Running this from an interactive terminal, ctrl+c will terminate bash, and the find command.
$ ./test-k.sh
13227
<Ctrl+C>
$ ps -ef |grep find
$
Running it in the background, and killing the shell only will orphan the commands running in the script.
$ ./test-k.sh &
[1] 13231
13231
$ kill 13231
$ ps -ef |grep find
nos 13232 1 3 17:09 pts/5 00:00:00 find /
$
I want this shell script to terminate all its child processes when it exits regardless of how it's called. It'll eventually be started from a python and java application - and some form of cleanup is needed when the script exits - any options I should look into or any way to rewrite the script to clean itself up on exit?
I would do something like this:
#!/bin/bash
trap : SIGTERM SIGINT
echo $$
find / >/dev/null 2>&1 &
FIND_PID=$!
wait $FIND_PID
if [[ $? -gt 128 ]]
then
kill $FIND_PID

Some explanation is in order, I guess. Out the gate, we need to change some of the default signal handling. : is a no-op command, since passing an empty string causes the shell to ignore the signal instead of doing something about it (the opposite of what we want to do).
Then, the find command is run in the background (from the script's perspective) and we call the wait builtin for it to finish. Since we gave a real command to trap above, when a signal is handled, wait will exit with a status greater than 128. If the process waited for completes, wait will return the exit status of that process.
Last, if the wait returns that error status, we want to kill the child process. Luckily we saved its PID. The advantage of this approach is that you can log some error message or otherwise identify that a signal caused the script to exit.
As others have mentioned, putting kill -- -$$ as your argument to trap is another option if you don't care about leaving any information around post-exit.
For trap to work the way you want, you do need to pair it up with wait - the bash man page says "If bash is waiting for a command to complete and receives a signal for which a trap has been set, the trap will not be executed until the command completes." wait is the way around this hiccup.
You can extend it to more child processes if you want, as well. I didn't really exhaustively test this one out, but it seems to work here.
$ ./test-k.sh &
[1] 12810
12810
$ kill 12810
$ ps -ef | grep find
$
Was looking for an elegant solution to this issue and found the following solution elsewhere.
trap 'kill -HUP 0' EXIT
My own man pages say nothing about what 0 means, but from digging around, it seems to mean the current process group. Since the script get's it's own process group, this ends up sending SIGHUP to all the script's children, foreground and background.
Send a signal to the group.
So instead of kill 13231 do:
kill -- -13231

Just add a line like this to your script:
trap "kill $$" SIGINT
You might need to change 'SIGINT' to 'INT' on your setup, but this will basically kill your process and all child processes when you hit Ctrl-C.
The thing you would need to do is trap the kill signal, kill the find command and exit.
In a bash script I execute a command on a remote machine through ssh. If user breaks the script by pressing Ctrl+C it only stops the script - not even ssh client. Moreover even if I kill ssh client the remote command is still running...
How can make bash to kill local ssh client and remote command invocation on Crtl+c?
A simple script:

ssh -n -x root#db-host 'mysqldump db' -r file.sql
Eventual I found a solution like that:
#/bin/bash
ssh -t -x root#db-host 'mysqldump db' -r file.sql
So - I use '-t' instead of '-n'.
Removing '-n', or using different user than root does not help.
When your ssh session ends, your shell will get a SIGHUP. (hang-up signal). You need to make sure it sends that on to all processes started from it. For bash, try shopt -s huponexit; your_command. That may not work, because the man page says huponexit only works for interactive shells.
I remember running into this with users running jobs on my cluster, and whether they had to use nohup or not (to get the opposite behaviour of what you want) but I can't find anything in the bash man page about whether child processes ignore SIGHUP by default. Hopefully huponexit will do the trick. (You could put that shopt in your .bashrc, instead of on the command line, I think.)
Your ssh -t should work, though, since when the connection closes, reads from the terminal will get EOF or an error, and that makes most programs exit.
Do you know what the options you're passing to ssh do? I'm guessing not. The -n option redirects input from /dev/null, so the process you're running on the remote host probably isn't seeing SIGINT from Ctrl-C.
Now, let's talk about how bad an idea it is to allow remote root logins:
It's a really, really bad idea. Have a look at HOWTO: set up ssh keys for some suggestions how to securely manage remote process execution over ssh. If you need to run something with privileges remotely you'll probably want a solution that involves a ssh public key with embedded command and a script that runs as root courtesy of sudo.
trap "some_command" SIGINT
will execute some_command locally when you press Ctrl+C . help trap will tell you about its other options.
Regarding the ssh issue, i don't know much about ssh. Maybe you can make it call ssh -n -x root#db-host 'killall mysqldump' instead of some_command to kill the remote command?
What if you don't want to require using "ssh -t" (for those as forgetful as I am)?
I stumbled upon looking at the parent PID, because CTRL/C from the initiating session results in the ssh-launched process on the remote process exiting, although its child process continues. By way of example, here's my script that is on the remote server.

Index=0

"watch cat ~/NowTime.txt" on the remote server shows the timestamp in the file increasing and declaring that the parent process is alive; once I hit CTRL/C in the launching process, the script on the remote server notes that its parent process has died, and the script exits.
