Description
Get this issue when trying to install ruby 1.8.7 on Bigsur.
Error running '__rvm_make -j8',
please read /Users/caio/.rvm/log/1635184861_ruby-1.8.7-p374/make.log
There has been an error while running make. Halting the installation.
To proceed rvm requires a ruby-1.8.7-p374 compatible ruby is installed.
We attempted to install it automatically but it failed with status 2.
Please install it manually (or a compatible alternative) to proceed.
Steps to reproduce
rvm install 1.8.7
rvm_info
make_log
If that first error is still showing:
xcode-select: error: tool 'xcodebuild' requires Xcode, but active developer directory '/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools' is a command line tools instance
You may need to install the command line tools, with something like this:
xcode-select --install
and then try again

Am trying to install Ruby on MacBook M1 but it failed every time,
Command used: rvm install ruby 2.7.2 (none of the version worked)
Error running '__rvm_make install',
please read /Users/myName/.rvm/log/1641910054_ruby-2.7.2/install.log
There has been an error while running make install. Halting the installation.
And after checking logs, I found
*** Following extensions are not compiled:
gdbm:
Could not be configured. It will not be installed.
Check ext/gdbm/mkmf.log for more details.
openssl:
Could not be configured. It will not be installed.
Check ext/openssl/mkmf.log for more details.
*** Fix the problems, then remove these directories and try again if you want.
I have also tried other version managers like asdf but no luck.
Background: HomeBrew installed successfully, paths also set, rvm also installed. Command line tools for Xcode also installed, using latest version of Xcode 13.2.1 and latest macOS Monterey 12.1.
I think maybe rvm just doesnt work properly on m1 yet? Try just using brew install ruby for now. It should work the same.
I'm trying to install a more recent version of Ruby on Snow Leopard so I can install Jekyll. When trying to install any version of Jekyll I get an error saying that it requires liquid, which requires ruby v2+.
If I try upgrade via rbenv I get the following when trying all versions:
error: failed to download ruby-2.1.1.tar.bz2
BUILD FAILED (OS X 10.6.8 using ruby-build 20181019)
I've also installed Ruby manually from source but this isn't recognised by the system and I can't switch versions.
If i run rbenv global it only recognises the System version of Ruby.
When I try brew upgrade ruby I get the following error:
ruby 2.5.3_1 already installed
If I try link to the new version with brew I get the following error:
brew link --force --overwrite ruby#2.5.3_1
Error: No such keg: /usr/local/Cellar/ruby#2.5.3_1
RVM doesn't install so I'm not sure what to do next. Below are the details of the packages I have installed.
Xcode 3.2.2 (I cant get an installer working for any higher versions of Xcode). The more recent versions hosted by Apple for Snow Leopard are corrupt when downloaded.
rbenv 1.1.1
brew 1.8.4
ruby 1.8.7 (System)
You have (or had) a path issue. Before you did your follow up steps, if you had run which ruby you'd probably see it pointing to /usr/bin/ruby which is system ruby, not your homebrew ruby in /usr/local/bin/ruby.
You still need to, if you haven't already, add your export command to your ~/.bash_profile file to ensure your PATH gets updated for every terminal window you open.
I'm not sure what actually fixed this but I ran the following commands after reading other posts and now have Jekyll 3.8.3 installed and ruby 2.5.3p105.
sudo chown -R "$USER":admin /usr/local
export PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH
brew link --overwrite ruby --force
gem install jekyll
I have tried installing Sass three times on Mac OS Sierra(10.12) from the terminal typing the following code:
sudo gem install sass
Then it asks for my password, I enter it and nothing happens (I even waited half an hour) it does not even gives any error or any other message, then when I try to close the terminal window a message appears saying that the processing will terminate if I close the window.
I already checked on if ruby is installed on my Mac and this is the version I have:
ruby 2.0.0p648 (2015-12-16 revision 53162) [universal.x86_64-darwin16]
What should I do?
NOTE: I'm a newbie and don't know about programming at all and this is the first time I use the terminal.
I had the exact same issue but found a solution for a similar thread on Compass.
You might need to install the developer tools first by entering the following on the command line:
xcode-select --install
Then try
sudo gem install sass
It worked for me and I am now running Sass 3.5.1 (Bleeding Edge)
Buddy,
I just now faced the same problem exactly same.
$ brew install ruby
make sure homebrew is installed on your PC then I did
$ sudo gem install sass
The installation took place
$ sass -v
Sass 3.5.1 (Bleeding Edge)
Hope it helps you too..
I used to have the same problem installing the Sass.
After installing Xcode with
xcode-select --install
I agree the license with
sudo xcodebuild -license
and finally run the app Xcode and finished installing.
After that I write sudo gem install sass and it works.
I'm trying to install Jekyll, a simple, blog-aware, static site generator. When I attempted to run the terminal command gem install jekyll, I got this error:
I then tried to update my RubyGems, using the command sudo gem update --system. That didn't work. Also, I attempted to install using sudo -s (as admin).
Hopefully, I don't have to re-install Ruby. What a headache that would be!
What version of OS X are you using?
Try this from your shell to install xcode command line tools
xcode-select --install
Then launch xcode and agree to the license. Then try again.
I have been trying to get Ruby to run on my Mac for a few days and whatever I do does not seem to be successful. I have installed MacPorts and followed the post here: Installing Ruby on Mac OS X 10.8.2
I ran the following commands:
sudo port selfupdate
sudo port install apple-gcc42
They completed sucessfully then I ran the line below:
CC=/opt/local/bin/gcc-apple-4.2 rvm install ruby-1.9.3-p194 --enable-shared --without-tk --without-tcl
After I run that line it takes a couple minutes and I get the following:
enter code here MacPorts base is already the latest version
DEBUG: Setting MacPorts sources ownership to root
The ports tree has been updated. To upgrade your installed ports, you should run
port upgrade outdated
i686-apple-darwin12-gcc-apple-4.2.1: no input files
Missing required packages: autoconf, automake, libtool, pkgconfig, libiconv, libyaml, readline, libxml2, libxslt, libksba, openssl, curl-ca-bundle, sqlite3, zlib, ncurses, gdbm.
Cowardly refusing to continue, please read 'rvm autolibs'.
There were package installation errors, make sure to read the log.
Do I need to install the missing packages that it references? If so, how do I do this? I'm not very familiar with MacPorts and would appreciate the help to get this working.
Since I originally I went to install RVM through https://rvm.io/rvm/install/ I followed the first command to RVM with ruby:
$ \curl -#L https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable --autolibs=3 --ruby
After I ran the command it downloaded and compiled then when it went to install rubygems-2.0.3 for ruby-2.0.0-p0 it gave the following error message:
Error running 'env GEM_PATH=/usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-2.0.0-p0:/usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-2.0.0-p0#global:/usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-2.0.0-p0:/usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-2.0.0-p0#global GEM_HOME=/usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-2.0.0-p0 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-2.0.0-p0/bin/ruby -d /usr/local/rvm/src/rubygems-2.0.3/setup.rb --verbose',
please read /usr/local/rvm/log/ruby-2.0.0-p0/rubygems.install.log
I then went to open the log file and at the bottom it says
ERROR: While executing gem ... (NoMethodError) undefined method fu_stream_blksize for #<Gem::Commands::SetupCommand:0x007fa09b05d7a8>
Installing RubyGems
Installing gem executable
Any ideas what I can do next?
Thanks in advance.
I had similar problems with OS X 10.8.3 and XCode 4.6.1. After some googling, I tried the install with a similar RVM command, except using the XCode version of clang (which symlinks to /usr/bin/cc). Try this:
\curl -#L https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable #just get rvm
source ~/.rvm/scripts/rvm
rvm get head # update to latest rvm
CC=/usr/bin/cc rvm install ruby
It should have the same failure installing rubygems-2.0.3, but reinstalling just rubygems should work:
CC=/usr/bin/cc rvm install rubygems latest # substitute "2.0.3" for "latest" if you like.
It appears that this is a bug in rubygems which is scheduled for fixing in 2.0.4.
Hope that helps!
I think this bug provide from FileUtils.
To fix it you need change rubygems script from rvm: nano .rvm/scripts/rubygems
To find words in nano use ctrl+w setup.rb and remove --verbose option.
After this you need ctrl+o to save file and ctrl+x to close nano.
Now you may reinstall rubygems:
rvm rubygems remove
rvm rubygems latest
Sorry for my bad english.
Hope this help you.
In addition to Valery's answer, you might have to do the following before removing and reinstalling:
echo ${LANG:-empty}
export LANG=en_US.utf-8
Links to the problem and solution:
https://github.com/rubygems/rubygems/issues/516
https://github.com/wayneeseguin/rvm/issues/1689
This problem is harmless, rubygems is already installed and will work as expected, this is triggered by https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/7992 - with --verbose flag to rubygems installation - your ruby is fully usable if there was no other error during installation.
A side note, RVM detects all the options/flags you have passed and it is not required to pass them manually, it would be enough to run:
rvm install ruby-1.9.3-p194
The RVM installer ran with --autolibs=3 is equivalent to running it withoug and setting it manually with:
rvm autolibs 3
To get more information on autolibs and available modes run:
rvm help autolibs
