I have an ASP.NET C# WebApi project in Visual Studio which I develop for some years now.
Suddenly, the Publish button is missing from the Build menu, so I cannot publish the changes I made.
I already uninstalled and installed again Visual Studio (with different options selected), updated to the last version, reset all settings in Tools > Import and Export Settings and applied General and Web development settings, nothing works.
I tried to install in another computer, and it is there. Tried to export the settings and import in the computer I need to use, and does not work.
Everything apart of this is working.
Do you have any clue what is causing this?
Thanks in advance.
I had the exact same problem. In my case it was self inflicted.
My project file (.csproj) was missing the <ProjectTypeGuids> setting. When I copied one over from another similar project (that had the publish option) the issue was resolved and I could once again Publish from the context menu.
I seem to remember removing the <ProjectTypeGuids> entry to get over another Visual Studio issue that I was experiencing at the time :(

This is happening with all new .Net Core projects (Console App, Class Library, Web Application etc), no matter the directory or drive I put them in.
The project is created and loads, but only the absolute bare minimum skeleton-of-a-skeleton is shown.
Quick screenshot:
If I tell it to show hidden files, I can see the whole project has been made:
Now if I select any file or folder, right click and choose 'Include in Project', nothing happens! I've tried closing and reopening Visual Studio, and have tried restarting my laptop, but still nothing happens.
Other projects work fine, e.g. WPF, Xamarin or anything that isn't done via .Net Core.
Is there a setting I may have missed or need to change somewhere? It's a strange issue indeed.
Thanks.
Turned out reinstalling Visual Studio was the only answer.
As in, full uninstall, delete the leftover folders in the old install location, then reinstall from scratch.
If I tried the update option, it failed at the start of the download. My guess is something messed up in Vistual Studio. It was fine before. The only thing I changed was that I recently installed AVG Antivirus, which seems way too strict on what processes it allows and disallows. AVG is now uninstalled.
This error started showing from yesterday, I remember installing Web development packages and updates windows. Before that if was working fine.
If I reload project same error shows up.
The application which this project type is based on was not found.

I tried uninstalling Xamarin packages and reinstalling.
It did not solve the issue.
Now I am doing complete uninstall of MS Visual Studio 2017
Please note that no changes have been made to csproj or solution file.
I get the "xamarin project type incompatible" frequently. (VS2015)
The solution for me:
Close down VS.
In the src project folder delete the .vs folder.
Restart VS.
Complete uninstall of Visual Studio along with C++ distributables from Control Panel > Programs and Features and then re-installing Visual Studio fixed the issue. Seems its caused by errors in installation
Microsoft should code properly and let programmers know if there were errors and 'repair' option is supposed to fix them. I don't know why these things are missed out in roll-outs.
I have Visual Studio 2013 Professional with Update 2 RC installed. I tried to add new projects using ASP.NET SPA Template, AngularStart and a few other SPA templates. None of them showing intellisense even the VS can't determine the user defined class types, as their font color is black, GoToDefinition option is disabled in context menu, and I can't see the suggestions drop-down while typing or while accessing class methods through instance.
I reset the settings files many times from Import Export option. I also tried "devenv /setup" but didn't work. At the end I uninstalled and re-installed the VS 2013, still having the same problem.
I tried adding a new Web API project with "Individual User Accounts", intellisense works. But when i added a new Web API project without authentication and later i installed nuget package Microsoft.AspNet.Identity.Owin, now intellisense stops working.
Edit:
I am getting this problem in almost every project. when I close the newly created project and reopen it, the problem arise. And when I unload and reload the project in solution, then everything starts working. So I have to unload and reload the projects each time I open a solution in visual studio.
Not sure if it's the same thing, but I recently had a project's Intellisense in VS 2013 stop working too. If I cleaned the solution and rebuilt it, it would work for a very short time but then stop again soon. Lots of wavy red underlines too where there shouldn't have been.
For me, I closed VS and deleted the the solution's .suo file (in the solution's root). (Keep in mind this will also delete your breakpoints, bookmarks, and other user-preferences. But nothing "code"-related.) You might also try deleting the csproj.user files as well. I guess it just got corrupted or who knows. But haven't had a problem with it since.
I hope this helps!
Every time I try to build my solution in VS2013, nothing builds, no errors - But in the status bar it says: "This item does not support previewing"
I googled around a bit but have come up empty.
But if I right click on each project and select build it works fine.
Any ideas?
Perhaps this message is totally unrelated... Post hoc ergo propter hoc
Steps to reproduce on my machine:
Right Click any project in solution: select build
Status bar displays Build successful
Right click solution select build
Status bar displays : "This item does not support previewing"
Perhaps it isnt related, but it sure does appear to be.
I was able to fix this... Somehow nothing was selected to build in the solution configuration. I right clicked on the solution, went to properties and then selected COnfiguration Properties and clicked the Build box for all the projects...
I have no idea how they became unchecked, only thing I can think of is a co-worker was trolling me.....
I've had this problem (i.e. debug not starting, and no error message) with Visual Studio 2015 in the following two cases:
after loading a solution that had previously been built with Visual Studio 2010
and also after using the "save as" function in Visual Studio 2015 to update a solution that had been started with Visual Studio 2010 (using Save as updates the solution file and sets the active Visual Studio version to 14 - i.e. VS 2015).
In both cases, deleting the bin and obj directories under the startup project fixed the problem. It's also worth closing visual studio and making sure that there are no {yourprojectname}.vshost.exe processes still running - if there are then kill them before running visual studio again. On that note, if you have multiple versions of visual studio on your machine, you should also check that you don't have the same solution open in the other version of visual studio at the same time (I've done that one myself).
One of the comments here suggests disabling the "enable visual studio hosted process" option. Don't do that if you can at all avoid it: you'll lose lots of debugging functionality (particularly in the area of being able to edit code while your solution is running).
Hope that helps someone out there.

I faced same issue with .aspx file. I just right click on the .aspx file and select open with (HTML Editor). You can choose any form the list.
I have come across the same issue for me, I have opened a project in VS 2010 and then when I open the same in VS 2015 then his error has occurred.
Solution:
By Closing the VS2010 project solution fixed the issue.
I installed Microsoft Visual Studio and during installation i think i somehow ticked the Team Project checkbox. Now i'm unable to create a normal ASP.NET website in any way. I would be very grateful if someone tells how to fix this thing. Also i have uninstalled and installed seven times. But no luck. Thank you.
If I have understood You right. You try to change default templates in IDE for Web developers.
In Visual studio you can easily change the profile of the IDE by going to Tools -> Import Export Settings. This brings up Import Export Windows Wizard. Follow the simple Wizard (which also allows to save you the current settings for future use) and select the new profile setting (based on the kind of project you are working on) and you are ready to work with new profile.
I assume You need to choose "Web development".
