how to associate a goal to a specific phase in maven

I know maven's deploy meaning is "send the artifact to the repository" but what I want to do is associate the tomcat7-maven-plugin's deploy goal to the deploy phase or another one like install. I'm not able to associate it with the following configuration:

You're actually defining your tomcat7-maven-plugin only in pluginManagement but do not refer it anywhere outside in the build.plugins section.
A slightly altered version of your pom.xml showing only the relevant parts could be:
<project xmlns="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xsi:schemaLocation="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0 http://maven.apache.org/xsd/maven-4.0.0.xsd">

If all artifacts which inherit the parent pom.xml shall benefit from your pre-configured tomcat7-maven-plugin then pull the pluginManagement section out of your sub pom.xml and put it into the build section of your parent pom.xml.

The default sources directory would be src/main/java. In your case, it is just src in each module.
You can include following line in each module's pom file.
<sourceDirectory>${project.build.directory}/src</sourceDirectory>
Or you can try marking each src directory as Sources Root.

how to access variable in pom.xml from external properties file?

I need to get value through a key in pom.xml from external properties files. Location of properties file is in src/main/resources/dev.properties.
I have tried to solve this by using properties in maven. Please help me.

You have to use the properties plugin:
Plugin
<plugins>
<plugin>
<groupId>org.codehaus.mojo</groupId>
<artifactId>properties-maven-plugin</artifactId>
<version>1.0.0</version>
<executions>
<execution>
<phase>initialize</phase>
<goals>
<goal>read-project-properties</goal>
</goals>
<configuration>
<files>
<file>${basedir}/${propertiesFile}</file>
</files>
</configuration>
</execution>
</executions>
</plugin>
</plugins>
Mvn Command
mvn -DpropertiesFile=dev.properties properties:read-project-properties clean install
Alternatively
You can hardcode the file:
<file>${basedir}/dev.properties</file>

mvn clean install not able to resolve class

I have the following maven structure
parent POM.XML
- common/pom.xml
- search/pom.xml
Search module is not able to get common module classes when i do mvn clean install on search module
I get package de.test.common does not exists. I even ran mvn clean install on parent platform but no success. common module is building fine.

I think i have the same problem mentioned here
maven compilation failure
Found the problem but not the cause
I removed the following dependency and everything is okay
<plugin>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-maven-plugin</artifactId>
</plugin>
after removing the plugin the jar is build in a different structure. When spring boot plugin was there the whole content was inside BOOT-INF folder which i think was the cause, not sure though... need expert opinion here.
The easiest way to solve this is through a so called reactor project, where you build all dependent modules with the parent pom. To that end, add the following code to your parent POM:
<modules>
<module>common</module>
<module>search</module>
</modules>
Now, build the parent pPOM and your entire build should work.
Also, don't use explicit versions in the child projects, only inherit the version from the parent POM (I think you're good there). If you reference dependencies from the same project reactor, use the version ${project.version}.
Found the solution. May be somebody will find it useful.
<build>
<plugins>
<plugin>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-maven-plugin</artifactId>
<configuration>
<classifier>exec</classifier>

</plugins>
