I am wondering how to draw a NSTextFieldCell like the one in NetNewsWire.
I have already subclassed a NSTextFieldCell for the group cell and specified it in my PXSourceList's dataCellForItem.
The source list is cell based.
I just don't know how to draw the cells.
Check out the Apple sample "SourceView", that contains a subclass of NSTextFieldCell called ImageAndTextCell that does what you want.

Though if it were me, I'd change to using a view based OutlineView and use the built in NSTableCellView which already supports an imageView.

I have an NSTextView inside an NSTableView. I would like the NSTextView to be editable in such a way that when I add content to it, the NSTableView and NSTableCellView resizes to show the full content of the NSTextView.

What would be the best way to implement (using Cocoa) a DataView as presented in this example:

The image below is taken directly from Apple's Image Kit documentation and does exactly what you need.
2. NSCollectionView
NSCollectionView is more general because you are not restricted to just presenting images; you can present a collection of any NSView subclass you like. Try this if you need more customisation. For example, you could have a NSImageView, NSTextField and NSButton in your subclass if you needed to have a more complex user interface.
I've just created my first view-based NSTableView in Interface Builder and I've correctly set up the data source and the bindings to update the views in the tableview. Each view has two labels and a NSProgressIndicator. Updating the progress indicator through the bindings and the data source works perfectly, but I'd like to change its state from determinate to indeterminate at some time. As my NSTableCellView subclass has access to the progress indicator, how can I get access to the cell view at a given row index? I've tried calling viewAtColumn:row:makeIfNecessary: on the tableview with both NO and YES for the makeIfNecessary argument, but neither seems to work.
Solution 1: In your NSTableCellView subclass add a property (IBOutlet) for your NSProgressIndicator control. Wire it in IB to set the property when the view is loaded. You can then access the progress control in your cell view subclass by using the property.
Solution 2: In IB give your NSProgressIndicator a unique integer tag. In your cell view subclass use [self viewWithTag:] to get the object.
I am not sure about the answer to your main question but you can bind the indeterminate state as well. In IB Is Indeterminate is listed in the Parameters section.
I'm struggling with Cocoa for 2 hours now without success. I want to add a custom view to the toolbar. So, I added a NSToolbar to the window (with IB), and added my view (which works perfectly). IB automatically created a NSToolbarItem.

The problem is that I don't know what to do now, the view doesn't show although it's label is displayed in the window.

I solved the problem.
I put my custom view in the root of the nib. I added a classic NSToolbarItem and created two outlets: one for the custom view and one for the NSToolbarItem. On -(void)awakeFromNib, I called setView: on the NSToolbarItem with the custom view.
According to some ressources on the internet, it is a bug with Interface Builder.
According to an Apple engineer in the discussion at http://www.mail-archive.com/cocoa-dev#lists.apple.com/msg35673.html, there is a bug in Interface Builder whereby "Custom Views" (NSViews created in IB) are not decoded properly when used as the view for an NSToolbarItem, and so do not appear in the toolbar. Other kinds of NSViews, such as NSButtons and NSBoxes, will work just fine as toolbar items: you can create these in Interface Builder and then drag them into the toolbar to make them into toolbar items.
(The discussion in the link above implies that the bug is down to how "Custom Views" are created from the XIB at runtime: using initWithFrame: instead of initWithCoder:. The discussion dates from 2009 but this still hasn't been fixed as of XCode 4.5/OS X 10.8.)
In my case I was using a regular NSView to wrap a set of controls (a volume slider and min/max buttons), rather than implementing a custom NSView subclass. I was able to avoid the problem by using an NSBox as the container instead of an NSView: I made the NSBox transparent, title-less and borderless, so it otherwise acted exactly like a plain NSView wrapper. This was a little more work in IB, but saved me the trouble of wiring up the view to the toolbar item programmatically.
I made a Cocoa application that has an NSTableView, an NSTextField, and an NSButton. The user enters text into the text field and clicks the button. When the user does this, I want the text in the textfield to be placed in the NSTableView. I find that I can't even bind an IBOutlet to a cell in the NSTableView. What should be done?
The Model-View-Controller pattern, which is used extensively in Cocoa is your friend here.
What you need to do is to bind the NSTableView to an array (The model). Then configure the button so that a click tells the controller to add the content of the text field to the array and if the bindings are set up correctly the NSTableView (The View) will be updated.
What I think you need to do is make a class, AppController for instance which will be your data source and the delegate of the NSTableView. So you need the following.
Two IBOutlets (one for the NSTextField and one for the NSTableView)
An IBAction for the NSButton.
Make those connections in Interface Builder.
Remember to use the mandatory delegate methods (there are two of them) so you can add the data from your data source (usually a collection class..an array, dictionary...etc.
