I'm running the RC version of VS 2013 and Windows 8.1. If I go to visualstudio.com, my project and click on "Open new instance of Visual Studio", Visual Studio opens but I get a message box saying "Key not valid for use in specific state."
I've been able to work with this repository in Windows 7 just fine. So I'm assuming it has to do with the OS. Has anybody else seen this behavior?
Thanks!
This is working fine on my computer today in VS 2013 Premium RTM against the Service, I've tested with both TFVC and Git based team projects. I have the Git 1.8.4 installed and am running Windows 8.1 RTM.
What ever the problem is/was seems fixed if you install the latest everything (as I always do) :).

Last night, I downloaded Unity to start developing games with my brother. The installer also gave me Visual Studio 2015 and MonoDevelop, which I gather is basically a slightly modified Visual Studio.
This morning I discovered the problem: MonoDevelop will open, but Visual Studio won't. It always came up with a pop-up box saying "The program can't start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer."
According to this other StackOverflow question, I need to download the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015. But before doing that, I decided to check if I already had it, just in case.
I opened "Programs and Features" and beheld that I already had nine other Visual C++ Redistributables installed on my machine. This image shows the list.
Included are the 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2015 redistributables for both x86 and x64. I don't know if this is typical or not but it certainly seems excessive.
Despite all these, my Visual Studio still won't open. Do I need to install another one? I'm happy to do that if I need to; I just want to start coding.
(I also had this same problem with Microsoft Office 365 before I just gave up and downloaded Microsoft Office 2013 instead, which works fine. Perhaps it's a problem with my machine? I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, for what it's worth.)
You also need to install the Universal C Runtime
The Windows Update package on this page allows Windows desktop
applications that depend on the Windows 10 Universal CRT release to
run on Windows Vista SP2, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1
S14.
Extract the WindowsUCRT.zip and install the Windows6.1-KB3118401-x64.msu (note if you get a hang at "Searching for updates on this computer", cancel the install, stop the WU service and try again to install the update).
Coworker has VS 2015 installed and needs vb6 on his machine.
The popup "service pack setup has detected that the version of the system installed is newer than the update you are applying to it"
Is there a work around for this?
I have both installed on my machine (Windows 7) but I installed VB6 first and then VS 2015.
I am using windows 8.1 and visual studio 2013. I can only run VS2013 in safemode, otherwise it raises error at startup and close. It is same even I made a fresh install again. It is also same for the other versions as well (2012, 2010). How can I diagnoses the problem ,any idea?
Have you try:
Search for the service packs, I think for VS2013 there is the Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 Update 4.
Restart your pc after the installation.
Right clic, properties, Compatibility, Run as administrator or compatibility mode.

downMy gated checkin reconcile message has stopped working. To troubleshoot I opened up Build Notifications options and see that the "Build notifications to monitor" list is blank.I restarted Visual studio, connected to the project server again in the IDE, rebooted the machine but still Build notification options are blank.
I have also deleted the Team Foundation local cache from %localappdata%/Microsoft/Team Foundation/5.0/Cache but to no result.
From what i understand the Build notification desktop tray app gets the connection to the server from the Connect option in Visual Studio IDE. All the settings look right but the problem persists. Any suggestions?
P.S : I have recently downgraded from Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate to Visual studio 2013 Pro.
Each version of Visual Studio (2010, 2012, 2013, 2015 etc) installs its own newer version of this tool. Each under a different path that contains the Visual Studio version.
Make sure you're launching the correct one, or register your TFS version inside the latest version of Visual Studio installed and use that (since it will be able to connect to any and all versions of TFS).
I have been getting this strange error with VS2010 TFS client, whenever i try to do
any operation related to TFS.
Method not found: 'System.String
Microsoft.TeamFoundation.VersionControl.Client.ExtendedItem.get_LockOwnerDisplayName()'
More background : I was working with TFS build services on my machine and
later I uninstalled the TFS build services .. And after that i started getting this problem.
Also I repaired VS 2010 (Pro edition) and also re-installed VS 2010 SP1 .
Reinstalled TFS build services, reinstalled tfs power tools also
But still the problem persists.
Any clue how to repair/fix this?
Any way to fix the TFS client part of VS2010 ?
After installing the following hotfix, the problem was fixed.
FIX: A hotfix for Visual Studio 2010 SP1 is available to add compatibility support for Visual Studio Team Foundation Service Preview
Intresting point from the above site :
Note The following hotfix includes all the Team Foundation Client
hotfixes that were released after Visual Studio 2010 SP1 was released.
Hope this is helpful to others too.
(I guess this must have refreshed my VS2010 TFS client files)
Another solution :
Bind and rebind the project to the TFS server.
It has solved the problem in my case.
Good Luck.
This same issue happened to me after Windows Update installed update KB2813041 to Visual Studio 2010. After I uninstalled this individual update, it started working again.
Here's how to uninstall an individual update. Go to Control Panel > Windows Update > View Update History > Installed Updates (appears in a sentence at the top of the dialog). Then, scroll through the list of updates looking for Visual Studio and then right-click on the update you want to uninstall and click Uninstall.
Hopefully this helps somebody.
Thanks,
Andy
